Winnipeg Jets Jets coach looking to get Pardy, Halischuk, Peluso some game time By: Tim Campbell Posted: 11/12/2014 2:26 PM RALEIGH, N.C. Some lineup changes might be in the offing for the Winnipeg Jets and it s not because they lost a game Tuesday night, 3-0 in Montreal. The setback snapped the Jets eight-game streak with at least a point (6-0-2). "We re going to have a long conversation about what our lineup s going to look like in the next three games because at some point, I ve got to get these guys back in the lineup," Jets coach Paul Maurice said today at PNC Arena, where his club will meet the Carolina Hurricanes on Thursday night. "We re a 23-man roster and the three guys that have been out have been working hard, done what we ve asked." Defenceman Adam Pardy and forwards Matt Halischuk and Anthony Peluso have not seen a game in the past seven. "They need to get back into a game and we need them to get back into a game," Maurice said. "So that ll be a discussion, especially when you look at this stretch of hockey we re in. "We ve spent quite a bit of time here working on the team-ness of what we ve got going on here." Thursday s game kicks off a three-games-in-four-nights weekend for the Jets, who will be finishing up a stretch of nine road games out of 11. And by today s practice at PNC Arena, there were hints that Michael Hutchinson could play Thursday s game against the Canes. Maurice would not confirm that today but did suggest Hutchinson played too well in his last start (Nov. 2 at Chicago) to be sitting out this long. Today, defenceman Zach Bogosian and forward Dustin Byfuglien missed practice, but the coach said both players were just taking maintenance days.
Winnipeg Jets Happy with the chances, Naturally speaking By: Tim Campbell Posted: 11/13/2014 1:00 AM RALEIGH, N.C. -- If you're an NHL scorer making $6 million a season, goose eggs won't fit very well on your season's chart. But Winnipeg Jets' left-winger Evander Kane thinks he and his team would prevail more times than not if they had a do over of the opportunities they saw in Tuesday night's 3-0 loss in Montreal. "Geez, if you give me those chances tomorrow night, I'd be pretty happy," Kane said heading into tonight's game at PNC Arena against the Carolina Hurricanes. "I don't think there's too much to change to what we have to do as a team. "You can say, 'bear down,' but we hit some posts and crossbars. There was some good defensive play by them as well but if we continue to do those same things, if we get half those opportunities, we're going to win most nights." Kane has just one goal in his first eight games of the season, well off the pace he'd like to, and is being paid to, be on. But you can say this about the power forward: he didn't hold back in the defeat to the Habs. Kane had three shots on goal in the game, had another eight shots blocked and was credited with two missed shots. No player in the game took more cracks at the net. Among Kane's best chances Tuesday were a breakaway in the first period, a post in the third and a close-in attempt at a wide-open net in the final two minutes that was tipped over the glass. "You watch the video of the game and we had a lot of chances, more than enough offence to put three, four, five, six away," he said after Wednesday's 40-minute practice. "The bounces just didn't go our way last night. We're still positive and it's good when you're getting chances and sooner or later we're going to have those pucks going in for us." Kane said the big picture for the Jets, who are in 16 games, is positive. "It's probably just a phase throughout the year," he said about lack of goal scoring. "We're playing pretty well defensively. We're not giving up a whole lot of goals, either, which is why we've been winning a lot of games. So I think we have to look at that as a positive. We're just kind of realizing what makes our team successful. "We're not going to win every game. We realize that. We obviously went through a nice little stretch there where we didn't lose in regulation (6-0-2) and we lost the other night so we have to hit the restart button and start another streak of games we can put together. I've said it before -- that's what good teams do. You lose one, then you put another five, six, seven games of consistent points together. For us, that has to be our mindset and we're looking forward to the rest of this road trip." The Jets face the 'Canes tonight and then finish off a five-game road trip with back-to-back starts in Nashville and Minnesota on Saturday and Sunday.
Winnipeg Jets Tonight: HURRICANES Posted: 11/13/2014 1:00 AM Tim Campbell On the Air: TSN3, TSN1290 About the Hurricanes After an awful start, the Hurricanes have found a track forward, winning five of their last six (5-0-1) including Monday's home 4-1 bouncing of the Calgary Flames. Prior to last Saturday's overtime loss in Washington, the Canes had won four straight to start reversing their eight straight losses to start the year. Carolina had a power-play goal from defenceman Justin Faulk on Monday, giving them advantage goals in three straight games. Faulk is off to an excellent start to the season, now with two goals and 10 points this season after his three-point game on Monday. Sniper Jeff Skinner had his third goal of the season on Monday. He has three goals so far this season in 10 games. Jiri Tlusty leads Carolina with six goals so far. 5 Winnipeg Jets DROUGHT before the storm? By: Tim Campbell Posted: 11/13/2014 1:00 AM RALEIGH, N.C. -- They are steadfastly resolute what they're doing with a focus on defence to start the season is the right way to do things, that they're not going to change it. So don't dwell too long with any of the Winnipeg Jets that they've been shut out four times in the first 16 games of the season. The latest came Tuesday night in Montreal when the Jets failed to score and watched the Canadiens dance away with a 3-0 victory. The Jets have scored just 15 goals in their last nine games but because they've been so much sharper than past Winnipeg teams defensively, the loss stopped an eight-game points streak (6-0-2). "Obviously you're not happy coming out of there with nothing," Jets captain Andrew Ladd said after Wednesday's practice at PNC Arena, where the team will try to get back on track tonight (6 p.m., TSN3, TSN 1290) against the Carolina Hurricanes. "For me, I like the way we're playing and I like the confidence we have out there in terms of our routes and the way we're playing. 'When we do start filling the net, it's going to be trouble' -- Jets captain Andrew Ladd "The other stuff, the scoring, is going to come. We've been in this drought here and we were still winning hockey games. "When we do start filling the net, it's going to be trouble." Jets coach Paul Maurice has the results of the team's recent points streak with which to drive home his plan. He said at no time while he was formulating the way to get these Jets to play better defence -- so far, it's 33 goals against (35 if you count shootout losses) in 16 games -- did he foresee an offensive drought as a byproduct. "So the answer is no, almost emphatically no," Maurice said Wednesday. "But there's an exception to this. So most of your offence that you're generating comes from that defence. You spend less time in your own end when you're defending well. "The only part of your game where you wonder if you give up offence is leaving the zone. We call it cheating, but it's pressing for that offence first. Yeah, there's a chance you're giving up a few goals but you absolutely cannot win on that. You cannot win living on the cheat goals, leaving the zone early because you just give up so much and what's worse, you'll have nights where you think you're flying because that one day every six games you beat a team 5-1, you think that's the way we should play, we can play that way every night if we're on our game. "Nobody plays like that. And nobody certainly wins like that. "There's no negative correlation between offence and good defence. And to be honest with you, we're not playing that well defensively that we're taking anything off the table offensively. We've still got lots of room to improve the defensive part of our game." It's insightful to hear the coach say there's more room to improve defensively than offensively. But the illustration from Tuesday was that the two key Montreal goals (excluding the late empty-netter) were from rebounds and came as a result of Jets defenders not being able to sort out quickly enough who to cover or check in front of goalie Ondrej Pavelec. "My complaint, and it's not much of a complaint, in the Montreal game, is that I didn't think we defended quite as well as we could have on certain situations, some of the battles around the net and the pucks coming off the wall in the defensive zone," Maurice said. Ladd listed some of Tuesday's great opportunities -- posts by Mark Scheifele and Evander Kane among them -- and said his teammates have seen the value of staying focused on defence. "There's no reason to (cheat) and that's something we talked about here today," Ladd said. "You can go through every opportunity we had yesterday and see we could easily have had four or five goals. So the defensive part of our game is the backbone of what we do and that's really how we create a lot of our chances. You catch teams trying to take chances and then you're going the other way and getting the opportunities. We'll stick with that. "We need to relax a little bit and be confident in those situations. We're doing the right things."
Winnipeg Jets Maurice trying to get Halischuk, Pardy, Peluso back in lineup Posted: 11/13/2014 1:00 AM Tim Campbell RALEIGH, N.C. -- Some lineup changes might be in the offing for the Winnipeg Jets and it's not because they lost a game Tuesday night, 3-0 in Montreal. The setback snapped the Jets' eight-game streak with at least a point (6-0-2). "We're going to have a long conversation about what our lineup's going to look like in the next three games because at some point, I've got to get these guys back in the lineup," Jets coach Paul Maurice said Wednesday at PNC Arena, where his club will meet the Carolina Hurricanes tonight. "We're a 23-man roster and the three guys that have been out have been working hard, done what we've asked." Defenceman Adam Pardy and forwards Matt Halischuk and Anthony Peluso have not seen a game in the past seven. "They need to get back into a game and we need them to get back into a game," Maurice said. "So that'll be a discussion, especially when you look at this stretch of hockey we're in. "We've spent quite a bit of time here working on the team-ness of what we've got going on here." Tonight's game kicks off a three-games-in-four-nights weekend for the Jets, who will be finishing up a stretch of nine road games out of 11. Based on the look of Wednesday's practice, there were hints that Michael Hutchinson could play against the 'Canes. Maurice would not confirm that but did suggest Hutchinson played too well in his last start (Nov. 2 at Chicago) to be sitting out this long. Defenceman Zach Bogosian and forward Dustin Byfuglien missed practice, but the coach said both players were just taking maintenance days. IF the Jets are looking at tonight's game as a chance to jump-start their offence prior to resuming divisional games Saturday and Sunday against Nashville and Minnesota, they'd better be careful. Carolina has points in six straight games (5-0-1). "I know they had some injury troubles at the beginning of the season and they have some players on their team that are definitely threats," said Jets winger Evander Kane. "We just have to continue to play our game and be a hard team to play against." Jets captain Andrew Ladd, who won a Stanley Cup with Carolina in 2006, always likes playing in PNC Arena but is wary about tonight's opponent. "These guys are playing really well right now and they have a goalie (Cam Ward) who's standing on his head and we know from last year he can steal games all on his own," he said. "So we'll just focus on running those routes properly and winning those battles and creating those opportunities and we've got guys in here who know how to score goals, lots of guys who have scored over 20 and one guy's scored 30. We'll be alright."
Winnipeg Jets Jets at Hurricanes gameday: Visitors have had the edge By Ken Wiebe, Winnipeg Sun First posted: Wednesday, November 12, :50 PM CST Updated: Wednesday, November 12, :15 PM CST Mark Scheifele Mark Scheifele has hit goal posts on many occasions this season and is one of many Jets players struggling to put the puck in the net. The battle of former Southeast Division rivals has favoured the visiting team recently, winning 18 of the past 25 meetings. The Jets, who have won six of the past eight head-to-head meetings, defeated the Hurricanes 3-1 at MTS Centre last month in the only other meeting that will take place this season. Jets centre Mark Scheifele is the unofficial leader in shots off the iron this season, racking up either five or six through 16 games. Welcome to my world, quipped linemate Evander Kane, who knows a thing or two about ringing shots off the iron. Jets defenceman Zach Bogosian and forward Dustin Byfuglien missed Wednesday's session for maintenance purposes but are fine for the game against the Hurricanes. While having lineup continuity is a good thing, Jets head coach Paul Maurice knows he needs to find a way to get Matt Halischuk, Adam Pardy and Anthony Peluso back into the lineup before long. We're a 23-man roster, said Maurice. They've worked hard. We need them to get back in a game. Maurice said that backup goalie Michael Hutchinson will get back in the crease during this road trip for sure, but he wouldn't narrow down when. When a guy has a performance like he did in Chicago, you don't want to leave it too many days before he gets back in, said Maurice, referring to the 1-0 shutout Hutchinson posted against the Blackhawks in his last start on Nov. 2. He's earned the right to get back into a game. Speaking of goalies, one of the reasons for the Hurricanes resurgence is the return to form in the crease by Cam Ward, who has posted a 1.39 goals against average during a personal five-game winning streak. We've seen that before, said Maurice, who coached Ward during his time with the Hurricanes. To me, Cam is at his best when he's running a bunch of games (in a row) and gets into that good zone. When Cam Ward is on top of his game, he's an elite goalie. For a team that is looking to score goals, it will be a challenge for us. The Hurricanes have secured at least one point in six consecutive games (5-0-1), helping them improve in the Metropolitan Division standings. Being disciplined has been a key as the Hurricanes are seventh in the NHL in penalty minutes per game (9.2). By contrast, the Jets are 29th (14.9). THE BIG MATCHUP Eric Staal vs Andrew Ladd The captains often drive the bus for their respective teams and Ladd always seems to be up for games against his former club. Meanwhile, having Eric Staal back in the lineup has helped the 'Canes get on a roll after a slow start. 9 Winnipeg Jets Winnipeg Jets just need to stick with the plan and they'll start scoring By Ken Wiebe, Winnipeg Sun First posted: Wednesday, November 12, :44 PM CST Updated: Wednesday, November 12, :48 PM CST RALEIGH, N.C. If you re expecting the Winnipeg Jets to be expressing a whole lot of stress and agony over the lack of goals they ve been scoring of late, you ve come to the wrong place. Just one day after being blanked for the fourth time this season in a 3-0 loss to the Montreal Canadiens, the Jets were an upbeat bunch and continue to be encouraged by the quality of chances they ve been getting, even though they ve been limited to two goals or fewer in 11 of 16 games and are averaging 1.75 goals per game, which leaves them second-last in the NHL in that category. If you watch the video of the game (against the Canadiens), we (generated) enough offence to put three, four, five or six away, said Jets left-winger Evander Kane. The bounces just didn t go our way. We re still positive and it s good when you re getting chances. Sooner or later, we re going to have those pucks start going in for us. The Jets (8-6-2) face the improved Carolina Hurricanes (5-6-3) on Thursday at RBC Center as they continue a five-game road trip that wraps up with games against Central Division foes on consecutive days. If you give me those chances again (on Thursday) night, I d be pretty happy, said Kane. I don t think there s too much that needs to change to what we have to do as a team. If we get half of those opportunities, we re going to win most nights. Of course, the Jets want to score more goals, 30 in 16 games simply isn t enough. They realize that s a necessity, but getting down on themselves or squeezing the stick tighter when those chances come around doesn t help them either. Neither is starting to cheat on the offensive side when it could ultimately lead to breakdowns on the defensive side. We re playing pretty well defensively and we re not giving up a whole lot of goals either, which is why we ve been winning a lot of games. said Kane. We have to look at that as a positive. We re not going to win every game, we realize that. Obviously, we went through a nice little stretch there, where we didn t lose (in eight games) in regulation. We lost the other night, so we have to hit the restart button and start another streak of games together. In discussing the offensive woes, Jets head coach Paul Maurice is taking the glass half full approach and believes his players remain confident when they get the puck in prime scoring areas. I don t feel like we re passing up too many offensive opportunities because we re not scoring. And you really watch for that, when you re not shooting the puck, said Maurice. We ve talked about that in the past. It s not a lack of offensive opportunities. We re working on creating more and getting more off the cycle game, because we have zone time. We have the skill level to do it. There s no negative correlation between offence and good defence. To be honest with you, we re not playing that well defensively that we re taking anything off the table offensively. Running into bad puck luck is one thing, but the Jets seem to be taking that to the extreme of late. On the same shift late in Tuesday s loss to the Canadiens, both Kane and Bryan Little appeared to miss a wide open net. But upon further review, Kane s shot went over the glass after being deflected by a Canadiens defenceman and Little s chance actually hit the stick of teammate Blake Wheeeler. That s a perfect example of things not going your way, said Little. You see it a lot. There s times when it s going the other way and you feel like everything you re putting on net is finding a way to go in. Right now, it s one of those times when pucks are finding a way to stay out for us. It s only a matter of time before they start going in. It s tough to argue with the logic, but eventually the Jets are going to need to enhance their offensive production. Otherwise, winning games is going to become increasingly more difficult as the season wears on. Winnipeg Sun LOADED
