Season): 4th The Team: Johns Hopkins ended the regular season ranked fourth in the nation, earned the number five seed in the 2008 NCAA Tournament and made a stunning run to the national championship game before falling to Syracuse, 13-10, in the title game. The Blue Jays finished the season with an 11-6 record and won eight straight before the loss to the Orange in the championship game. These are the Facts: Johns Hopkins concluded the 2008 season with an all-time record of (.757). The Blue Jays own nine NCAA titles, 29 USILA titles and six ILA titles for a total of 44 national championships. That s 604 Games Over.500: With the 11-6 record, the Blue Jays all-time record is now (.757)... that s 604 games over.500. To put this in perspective: JHU has played an average of just under 15 games per season under head coach Dave Pietramala. Using a 15-game season as a reference, if the Blue Jays posted a 5-10 record for 120 straight seasons, they would still be four games over th Anniversary: The 2008 season marked the 125th anniversary of the Johns Hopkins men s lacrosse program. The Blue Jays wore commemorative patches on their uniforms for the 125th anniversary of the program (it was NOT the 125th season). Title-Game Appearances: Johns Hopkins made its record 18th appearance in the national championship game this season. The Blue Jays are now 9-9 in title games since making their first trip to the finals under Hall of Fame coach Bob Scott in More Title Games: The trip to the title game this season was JHU s second straight, third in the last four years and fourth in the last six years. A Regular at the Final Four: The Blue Jays advanced to the final four for the sixth time in eight seasons under head coach Dave Pietramala. JHU s six appearances in the final four since 2002 are the most of any team in the nation. Johns Hopkins has advanced to the semifinals 28 times in 37 appearances in the tournament (since 1972). To put that in persepective, only three other teams (Virginia, Maryland and Syracuse) have even qualified for the tournament 28 times. The 37 consecutive appearances is the longest active streak of qualifying for the NCAA Tournament in any NCAA Division I Team sport (the University of Miami baseball team earned its 36th straight bid to the NCAA Division I Baseball tournament in 2008). The Blue Jays missed the inaugural NCAA Men s Lacrosse Tournament in 1971, but have qualified for every tournament since. A list of the longest active streaks of qualifying for the men s lacrosse tournament can be found to the right. In addition, a list of the longest active streaks of qualifying for each Division I team sport can also be found here. Blue Jays Earn Number Five Seed: Johns Hopkins earned a number five seed in the 2008 NCAA Men s Lacrosse Tournament. This is the 12th consecutive year the Blue Jays have been seeded in the top five. To put this in perspective, no other team in the nation has even qualified for the NCAA Tournament for 12 straight years. In fact, JHU s streak of 12 straight top-five seeds is twice as long as any other team s streak of qualifying for the tournament at all (Maryland - 6 straight bids). Poll Position: Johns Hopkins concluded the season ranked fourth in the USILA Coaches Poll (final regular season poll - no poll conducted after NCAA Tournament) and second in the Nike/Inside Lacrosse Media Poll (poll conducted after NCAA Tournament). To clarify, the Johns Hopkins Sports Information Office uses the USILA Coaches Poll to reflect JHU s official ranking. Thus JHU s official final ranking for the 2008 season is fourth. Playing to the Crowd: Despite the loss to Syracuse in the national championship game, the Blue Jays have enjoyed a great deal of success in recent years when playing in front of crowds of 10,000 or more. In fact, since the beginning of the 2005 season, Johns Hopkins fashions a remarkable 11-1 record in front of five-figure crowds with the only loss coming to SU in this year s title game. Amazingly, JHU has won more games in front of 10,000 or more fans since the start of the 2005 season than any other team in the nation has even played in front of 10,000 or more. Below is a look at JHU s results in front of 10,000 or more fans since the start of the 2005 season: Maryland W/ , Virginia (OT) W/9-8 45, Duke W/9-8 44, Navy W/9-8 13, Princeton (2OT) W/7-6 20, Delaware W/8-3 52, Duke W/ , Princeton W/ , Navy W/ , Navy W/ , Duke W/ , Syracuse L/ ,970 Consecutive Appearances (Active) NCAA Men s Lacrosse Tournament 1. Maryland / Virginia Syracuse Navy North Carolina Cornell 21 May Day: Johns Hopkins has posted a 36-4 (.900) record in the month of April under head coach Dave Pietramala and that success has carried over into the month of May. JHU is 27-6 (.818) in the month of May under Pietramala, including a perfect 13-0 at Homewood Field. Overall the Blue Jays have won 21 consecutive games at Homewood Field in the month of May. JHU s last loss at home in May came on May 2, 1992, when Towson dropped the Blue Jays, 14-13, in overtime. Prepping For May: Head coach Dave Pietramala and the Blue Jays continue to play one of the most difficult schedules in the nation, a fact that was further solidified with the announcement of the 2008 NCAA Division I Men s Lacrosse bracket. Johns Hopkins played nine of its 13 regular season games against teams that qualified for the NCAA Tournament and the cumulative regular season record of JHU s 13 opponents was (.626). The nine games against NCAA Tournament teams were the second most in the nation. Only North Carolina (10) played more games against teams that qualified for the NCAAs. A complete breakdown of the number of games each team in the tournament played against teams that qualifed for the tournament can be found on the next page. NCAA Champions:

JHU won all seven of its games this season against in-state rivals (UMBC, Maryland, Navy-twice, Towson, Mount St. Mary s, Loyola) and the Blue Jays are 39-2 (.951) against teams from Maryland under head coach Dave Pietramala. Extra-Man Unit Among Nation s Best: Johns Hopkins converted on 17-of-41 (.415) extra man chances this season and finished the year ranked eighth in the nation in extra man offense. This is the third straight year and the sixth time in the last seven years the Blue Jays have finished in the top 10 in the nation. Senior Paul Rabil led the team with six extraman goals, while freshman Kyle Wharton (3), seniors Michael Doneger (3) and Kevin Huntley (2) and sophomore Steven Boyle (2) also cashed in on these chanes. One-Goal Turnarounds: With a 10-9 win over Duke in the NCAA Semifinals, Johns Hopkins is now 31-9 in one-goal games since Dave Pietramala took over in The Blue Jays have won 18 of their last 23 and 22 of their last 28 one-goal games. In the five seasons prior to Pietramala arriving ( ) the Blue Jays were 5-8 in one-goal games. More One-Goal Notes: The Blue Jays have come from behind to win 15 times during their last 18 one-goal wins. In 10 of those 15 come-from-behind one-goal wins the Blue Jays came back from a deficit of two goals or more. The latest of these come-frombehind one-goal wins came against Duke in the 2008 NCAA Tournament, when the Blue Jays erased a 2-1 second-quarter deficit. NCAA Tournament Victories All-Time Leaders Johns Hopkins Syracuse Maryland Virginia Princeton North Carolina Cornell Navy Duke Georgetown Extra, Extra: JHU is 13-5 all-time in overtime under head coach Dave Pietramala s guidance, including an impressive 6-3 on the road. Players on the 2008 team who scored game-winning goals in overtime during their career: Senior Kevin Huntley punched home the game-winner in the second OT against Duke in Junior Brian Christopher scored 1:22 into OT against Loyola on May 6, Senior Paul Rabil fired home the game-winner 56 seconds into the 2nd OT against Princeton on March 3, 2007 and tallied the game-winner 43 seconds into overtime at Maryland ( ). He is the only player in school history who has scored two overtime game-winners in the same season. Sophomore Michael Kimmel became the first freshman in school history to score an overtime goal in an NCAA Tournament game when he netted the game-winner one-minute into overtime against Notre Dame last season. More Overtime: The three consecutive overtime games for the Blue Jays against Hofstra, Syracuse and Virginia early this season mark the first time Johns Hopkins has ever played three straight overtime games. Twice previously the Blue Jays had played two consecutive overtime games (1982 and 1988). Comeback Kids: The Blue Jays came from behind to win six times this season (Albany, UMBC, Towson, Loyola, Navy (NCAA), Duke (NCAA)) and erased a two-goal deficit in the third quarter at Loyola. Johns Hopkins came from behind to win eight times last season, including six times during the season-ending nine-game winning streak. Streaking: Johns Hopkins is in its last 89 regular season games dating back to the end of the 2001 season and is overall since the start of the 2002 season. Defensive Turnaround: Johns Hopkins allowed 57 goals in consecutive losses to Syracuse, Virginia, North Carolina and Duke. However, the Blue Jay defense rebounded nicely over the last six weeks of the season with standout showings in wins over Maryland (10-4), Navy (12-5), Towson (16-7), Mount St. Mary s (12-1), Loyola (9-6), Hofstra (10-4) and Navy (10-4). Hopkins then held high-scoring Duke more than six goals below its scoring average in the 10-9 win the NCAA Semifinals. Johns Hopkins finished 19th in the nation in scoring defense (8.24). How remarkable was the defensive turnaround for the Blue Jays? After losing to Duke (17-6) in early April, JHU ranked 49th in the nation in scoring defense. NCAA Champions:

4 2008 Season Review Defensive Notes of Interest: The four goals the Blue Jays allowed against Navy (NCAA QF) marked the fourth time in six playoff games (dating back to 2007) that JHU held the opposition to six goals or less (Georgetown-6, Delaware-3 last season & Hofstra-4, Navy-4 this year). During the eight-game winning streak that turned a 3-5 record into an appearance in the NCAA Championship game, the opposition scored 40 goals on 263 shots for a shooting percentage of.152. The one goal allowed in the 12-1 win over Mount St. Mary s is the fewest JHU has allowed since April 24, 1999 when the Blue Jays beat Navy The Blue Jays held Mount St. Mary s scoreless for the final 49:11. This is the longest Johns Hopkins has held an opponent scoreless since March 11, 1989, when JHU held Washington College off the board for the first 50:20 in a 12-1 win. Johns Hopkins held the opposition scoreless for a streak of 14 minutes or longer 21 times in 17 games this season. Since the start of the 2007 season the Blue Jays have held the opposition scoreless for a streak of 14 minutes or longer 37 times. Hopkins has held the opposition scoreless for 25 minutes or longer 13 times since the start of the 2007 season, including seven times this season. The Blue Jays have held 18 of their last 23 opponents - including 13 of 17 this season - scoreless for a stretch of at least 18 minutes. The four goals the Blue Jays allowed against Maryland are the fewest Hopkins has allowed against a team ranked in the top 10 under head coach Dave Pietramala. The last time JHU held a top-10 opponent to four goals or less was on April 16, 1999, when JHU beat then seventh-ranked Maryland, Prior to the Maryland game the Blue Jays had allowed 13 or more goals in four straight games. Erwin More Defensive Notes of Interest: Albany scored its first goal just 36 seconds into the game against JHU. The Great Danes scored exactly one more goal in the next 41:21. Princeton scored exactly one goal in the first 35:18 against JHU. Hofstra scored six goals in the first 13:02 against the Blue Jays during the regular season meeting. The Pride didn t score again until just 9:02 remained in the fourth quarter. Maryland scored exactly two goals in the first 40:24 against JHU. Navy scored three goals in the opening 56:46 before scoring twice in the final 3:14. JHU held Towson scoreless for stretches of 23:33 and 16:27 in the win over the Tigers. Mount St. Mary s scored with 4:48 remaining in the first quarter and then didn t score again. Loyola scored three goals in a span of 3:19 in the third quarter. Just prior to that the Hounds had been held scoreless for 25:45 and were then held scoreless for 23:44 after the three-goal spurt. Hofstra was held scoreless for the first 16:06, scored twice in a four-minute span and then was held scoreless for the next 25:33 in the first round of the NCAAs. In the NCAA Quarterfinals, Navy scored three goals in the opening 14:06, then was held scoreless for 33:11. The Midshipmen also didn t score in the final 12:41 of the game. Duke led the nation in scoring this season at 15.2 goals per game. However, the Blue Jays held the Blue Devils to just nine goals in the NCAA Semfinals. Don t Forget the Offense: While the focus of any Dave Pietramala-coached team will always be defense, the Blue Jay offense was effective as well this season. Consider: As a team the Blue Jays scored on 31.2% of their shots this season (179-of-573). JHU connected on 28.8% of its shots en route to winning the national championship a year ago. The Blue Jays highest shooting percentage in the Pietramala era came in 2003 when they connected on 31.7% (224-of-706) of their shots. Although not the highest scoring team in the nation, the Blue Jays may have been one of the most balanced teams on the offensive end of the field in JHU had seven or more different goal-scorers in seven different games this season with a season-high nine different players scoring against Syracuse (regular season), Navy (regular season) and Mount St. Mary s. Eight different players scored against Virginia and Towson and seven hit the back of the net against Princeton and UMBC. Dating back to the end of last season, JHU has scored in double figures 18 times in its last 22 games and is averaging goals per game during that time (251 goals in 23 games). The 16 goals the Blue Jays scored against Towson are the most for JHU since a 17-goal outburst at Syracuse last season. Johns Hopkins scored in all 36 quarters during the final nine games of the season and the Blue Jays scored three or more goals in 21 of those 36 quarters. A Game of Runs: Johns Hopkins had at least one significant scoring run in 16 of its 17 games this season. Below is a quick look at JHU s runs of note this season: Albany 6-1 Turns 1-0 deficit into 6-2 lead... Albany never closer than two again Princeton 8-0 Game-opening run covers first 23:03... In their biggest win of the season, the Blue Jays dominated the ground ball battle (38-24) in the NCAA Semfinals against Duke. JHU vs. Top Seed: For the seventh time since the formation of the NCAA Tournament, Johns Hopkins knocked off the top-seeded team in the tournament as the Blue Jays 10-9 win over Duke in the semifinals sent the top-seeded Devils home. Johns Hopkins is now 7-7 all-time against the top-seeded team in the tournament and JHU s seven all-time wins against the top seed are the most of any team in the nation (Syracuse-4, Princeton-3, Virginia-2, Maryland-2, North Carolina-2, Cornell-1, Navy-1). The Blue Jays have avenged that regular season loss 10 times, including 4-of-5 times under head coach Dave Pietramala. Two of those four wins came in 2008 when the Blue Jays knocked off Hofstra and Duke in the NCAAs after dropping regular season games to the Pride and Blue Devils. In addition to their ranking among the all-time scoring leaders, the duo is just the second set of classmates to score 100+ goals at JHU (Terry Riordan and Brian Piccola) and they are two of just 11 players in school history to score 20 or more goals four times in their career. Below is a list of the 11 players who have scored 20 or more goals four times at Johns Hopkins. Johns Hopkins Players with 20+ goals 4X Paul Rabil (M) Kevin Huntley (A) Bobby Benson (A) Dan Denihan (A) , Terry Riordan (A) Brian Piccola (A) * Mike Morrill (A) Brian Wood (A) Del Dressel (M) Mike O Neill (A) Franz Wittlesberger (A) * Piccola received a medical redshirt as a freshman in 1991 and played from Kevin and Dave Huntley Make History, Again: When Kevin Huntley scored the 100th goal of his career in the win over Towson few knew that he and his dad, Dave Huntley, had joined such a select group. Research indicates that Kevin (101 career goals through the Hofstra game) and Dave Huntley (100 goals at Johns Hopkins from ) join Bill Morrill (107 goals at Johns Hopkins from ) and Mike Morrill (102 goals at Johns Hopkins from ) as the only father-son combinations in Division I lacrosse history to score 100 or more goals during their careers. Well documented of course is the fact that Dave and Kevin Huntley are the only father-son combination in the history of Division I lacrosse to have both won two NCAA Championships. NCAA Champions:
