To put this in perspective: JHU has played an average of just over 15 games per season under head coach Dave Pietramala. Using a 15-game season as a reference, if the Blue Jays posted a 5-10 record for 120 straight seasons, they would still be 14 games over.500. Back-to-Back: The Blue Jays recently picked up wins against Virginia (Mar. 26) and North Carolina (Apr. 3), which entered those games ranked second and fourth, respectively. This is the first time since 2004 that JHU has beaten top-five teams in consecutive games. In 2004 the Blue Jays knocked off thirdranked Maryland (14-10) and second-ranked Navy (10-9) in back-to-back games. After 10: The win against Albany gave JHU an 8-2 record. This is the Blue Jays best record after 10 games since 2005, when they were Bassett Stands Tall: Sophomore goalie Pierce Bassett turned in an outstanding performance in the 5-4 loss at Syracuse and came back with another impressive showing against Virginia. The Arizona native posted 16 saves, including 14 in the second half, against Syracuse and came back with 14 saves in the win against Virginia. After battling a stomach flu for two days prior to the North Carolina game (he didn t practice on Friday or Saturday before the game vs. UNC), he posted seven saves, including one in the final 20 seconds to help secure the win over the Tar Heels. Bassett currently ranks fourth in the nation in goals against average (6.15) and third in save percentage (.622). Dolente Continues to Roll: Senior co-captain and faceoff specialist Matt Dolente continued his hot streak against North Carolina as he won a career-high 16 faceoffs (on 22 attempts) and grabbed a game-high six ground balls to fuel the victory. He matched those 16 faceoff wins against Albany (on 20 attempts) and grabbed a career-high 12 ground balls against the Great Danes. Dolente is now 113-of-161 (.702) on the year and leads the team with 63 ground balls. For his career he is now 361-of-675 (.535) and ranks fifth in JHU history in faceoff attempts and sixth in faceoff wins. He also grabbed the 200th ground ball of his career against Albany and he currently ranks first in the nation in faceoff winning percentage and eighth in ground balls per game (6.30). Coppersmith Stepping Up: Sophomore Lee Coppersmith has emerged over the last several weeks as a go-to player for the Blue Jays. He netted his first career hat trick in the win over Virginia on March 26 and then did himself even better against North Carolina as he fired home the game-winning goal with 1:52 remaining. He added another goal against Albany and is now tied for fifth on the team with eight goals on the year. Coppersmith s heroics against UNC came more than 1,300 miles from his home in Boca Raton, Florida, but that doesn t mean he didn t have some fans in the stands. The opening game of the Big City Classic featured Coppersmith s high school team, St. Andrew s, JHU s Tentative Lineup Attack 32 Chris Boland (Sr.) 19g, 10a 45 Zach Palmer (So.) 14g, 15a 42 Kyle Wharton (Sr.) 16g, 4a 1st Midfield 31 John Ranagan (So.) 13g, 9a 9 John Greeley (So.) 8g, 8a 27 Rob Guida (Fr.) 8g, 1a 2nd Midfield Defense Goalie 77 Mark Goodrich (Sr.) 5g, 2a 28 Marshall Burkhart (Jr.) 1g, 3a 16 Lee Coppersmith (So.) 8g, 0a 51 Tucker Durkin (So.) 0g, 1a, 24 GBs 19 Chris Lightner (So.) 1g, 0a, 11 GBs 43 Jack Reilly (Fr.) 0g, 0a, 12 GBs 33 Pierce Bassett (So.) 6.15 GAA,.622 save % Faceoff Specialist LSM SSDM 4 Matt Dolente (Sr.) 113-of-161 (.702) 31 John Ranagan (So.) 14-of-27 (.519) 17 Ben Smith (Gr.) 1g, 0a, 18 GBs 88 Orry Michael (Sr.) 0g, 0a, 10 GBs 25 Tim Donovan (Sr.) 1g, 0a, 7 GBs 22 Phil Castronova (Fr.) 2g, 2a, 26 GBs against New Jersey power Don Bosco Prep. Wharton bookended a game-opening 4-0 run and added JHU s fifth goal of the game after UNC had sliced the deficit to 4-3. He reached a pair of milestones in the victory as he recorded the 75th goal and 100th point of his career in the win. Wharton, who added two goals in the win over Albany, now has career totals of 78 goals and 24 assists for 102 points. The hat trick vs. UNC was the 12th of his career and the multi-point game against Albany was his 29th. Ranagan Nabs MVP Honors: Sophomore midfielder John Ranagan grabbed Big City Classic MVP honors with a three-goal, one-assist effort against North Carolina. The hat trick was the second of his career and the four points were one shy of his career high. Ranagan added two goals against Albany and now ranks third on the team in scoring with 13 goals and nine assists for 22 points. Quick Starts: Johns Hopkins has scored on its first shot of the game six times this season. Kyle Wharton did it against Towson, UMBC and North Carolina,

For Openers: Johns Hopkins opened the 2011 season with back-to-back road games at Towson and Delaware. Since the inception of the NCAA Tournament in 1971, JHU has opened a season with consecutive road games just twice before this season (1979, 1987). In each of those two years, the Blue Jays won the national championship. Streaking: Johns Hopkins is in its last 126 regular season games dating back to the end of the 2001 season and overall since the start of the 2002 season. Poll Position: The Blue Jays check in at number three in the USILA Coaches Poll and the Nike/ Inside Lacrosse Media Poll this week. The Johns Hopkins Sports Information Office uses the USILA Poll to represent JHU s official ranking at the time of a game. Prior to falling out of the top 20 of the USILA Poll on April 26 and May 3, 2010 (JHU was receiving votes in both polls), the Blue Jays had been ranked in the top 20 in 367 consecutive polls dating back to the first poll in More Poll Position: Including this week s USILA Poll, there have been 379 weekly polls since the inception of the poll in Amazingly, JHU has been ranked in the top 20 in 377 of those 379 polls. In addition, the Cordish Lacrosse Center will include a second-level patio area that will comfortably accommodate special guests for receptions and game viewing.

4 2011 Johns Hopkins Men s Lacrosse Notes Game 11 #3 Johns Hopkins at #4 Maryland - 4 Dave Pietramala. JHU had won 23 straight games against teams from Maryland until the loss to Maryland last season. Below is a breakdown of JHU s record against teams from the state of Maryland under Pietramala. Loyola 10-0 Maryland 7-3 Mount St. Mary s 4-0 Navy 10-1 Towson 12-0 UMBC 7-0 Youth Shall Be Served: It s no secret that Johns Hopkins lost five players (Steven Boyle (A), Michael Kimmel (M), Matt Drenan (D), Sam DeVore (D), Michael Gvozden (G)) who were mainstays in the JHU lineup over the last four years. The group helped the Blue Jays to a national championship in 2007 and a runner-up finish in Collectively they combined for 238 starts during their career. Fast forward to 2011 and the makeup of the Johns Hopkins men s lacrosse team is much different, and much younger. How much younger? The entire 47-man roster for Johns Hopkins this season had a combined total of just 91 career starts to its credit entering the season. Youth Gone Wild: Johns Hopkins continues to display its youth throughout the lineup as the Blue Jays have featured the same starting lineup in all 10 games - a starting 10 that features six sophomores and two freshmen. Take a quick look at the JHU scoring charts and the class division is obvious. JHU seniors/grad. students have combined for 44 goals and 17 assists through 10 games, while the sophomores lead the way with 45 goals and 33 assists. Add in 19 goals and four assists for the JHU freshmen and 58.1% of the team s goals and 63.8% of the team s assists have been compiled by players with at least two years of eligibility remaining. Breaking It Down: Johns Hopkins has totaled 110 goals and 58 assists through 10 games and those 168 points have been spread pretty well throughout the lineup. There are several ways of looking at the production, including by class and by position. Below is a breakdown of JHU s offensive production by class through 10 games. G A P Seniors/Grad. Students Juniors Sophomores Freshmen Below is a breakdown of JHU s offensive production broken down by position. G A P Attackmen Midfielders Defensemen/LSM Offensive Notes of Interest: Below are several notes about the JHU offense to date: The Blue Jays have scored on their first shot of the game six times this season. Johns Hopkins ranks 11th in the nation in scoring offense (11.00), Johns Hopkins Scoring by Quarters Goals In a Qtr. # of Times third in scoring margin (+4.6), 20th in assists per game (5.8) and 13th in points per game (16.8). JHU has scored at least two goals in 32 of 40 quarters this season. In wins against Delaware (18) and Siena (16) JHU scored 16 or more goals in back-to-back games for the first time since 2005, when JHU totaled 22 vs. Marist and 19 vs. UMass in the first two rounds of the NCAA Tournament. JHU s 18 goals against 16th-ranked Delaware are the most for the Blue Jays against a nationally-ranked team since April 5, 2005, when they punched up 19 against 14th-ranked Albany. Johns Hopkins eight goals in the third quarter against Delaware are the most in a quarter by a JHU team since May 14, 2005, when JHU punched up eight in the second quarter of a 22-6 win against Marist in the first round of the NCAAs. Scouting the Terrapins The Team: Maryland welcomes Johns Hopkins to Byrd Stadium with an 8-2 overall record and riding a two-game winning streak. Experience vs. Youth: While Johns Hopkins will trot out a starting lineup that consists of eight freshmen and sophomores, the Terps will counter with a starting 10 that counts seven juniors and seniors. Maryland will start at least two and maybe three seniors on attack (Ryan Young & Grant Catalino for sure - the third spot will be either senior Travis Reed or sophomore Owen Blye) and three seniors on defense (Max Schmidt, Brett Schmidt and Ryder Bohlander). Young, Catalino Pace Balanced Offense: Maryland counts four players with 20 or more points and nine with 10 or more points through 10 games. The leaders offensively are seniors Ryan Young (13g, 15a) and Grant Catalino (19g, 8a), who rank first and second, respectively, on the team in scoring. The Terps feature a five-man rotation at midfield that is led by junior Joe Cummings, who has a team-high 20 goals to his credit. Three other middies - John Haus (10g, 9a), Jake Bernhardt (9g, 1a) and Drew Snider (7g, 3a) - have 10 or more points to their credit as well. Amato Among Nation s Finest: There are several talented young goalies playing key roles for highly-ranked teams this season and Maryland may have the best in redshirt-freshman Niko Amato. Amato anchors a Maryland defense that currently ranks fourth nationally in scoring defense (6.5) as he stands second in the nation in goals against average (6.12) and seventh in save percentage (.599). In their eight wins the Terps have allowed an average of just over 5.6 goals per game. Holmes Dominant at the X: Sophomore Curtis Holmes has taken 191 of Maryland s 217 faceoffs this season and currently ranks 11th in the nation in FO winning percentage (.618). He has won 119-of- 191 faceoffs and leads the team with 43 GBs. In the ACC: The Terps have completed the ACC portion of their schedule and posted a 1-2 record in those three games.
