Meet the Head Coach Head Coach John Mello John Mello enters his fifth season as the head men s soccer coach at Rhode Island College.

The Anchormen posted a 10-6-1 overall record and were 4-2-1 (third place) in the Little East Conference in 2006.

He led the Anchormen to a 12-5-5 overall record and a 4-1-2 (second place) mark in the Little East Conference in 2005.

College Athletic Conference (ECAC) New England Men's Soccer Championship, the first in the program's history.

3 Meet the Head Coach Head Coach John Mello John Mello enters his fifth season as the head men s soccer coach at Rhode Island College. RIC was overall and (third place tie) in the Little East Conference in The Anchormen posted a overall record and were (third place) in the Little East Conference in Mello helped the RIC men's soccer program reach the 10-win plateau for the fifth consecutive season. He led the Anchormen to a overall record and a (second place) mark in the Little East Conference in After a heartbreaking loss to fourth-seeded Western Connecticut on penalty kicks in the Little East Conference Men's Soccer Tournament Championship Game, the Anchormen went on to win the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) New England Men's Soccer Championship, the first in the program's history. RIC's 12 wins were the most in a season since the 1973 squad won 13 and the Anchormen recorded a program-record 11 shutouts. In his first season in 2004, Mello led RIC to an overall record and a (second place) mark in the Little East Conference. RIC s second place regular season record in the LEC was the highest finish in the program s history. The Anchormen made it to the Championship Game of the 2004 Little East Conference Men s Soccer Tournament, falling, 3-1, to Keene State. The Anchormen also were selected to participate in the 2004 Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Men s Soccer Tournament. Mello was an assistant coach at RIC under Len Mercurio from Mello had coached the Northern Lightning Premier Soccer Club and won the State Championship twice. He was previously the head varsity boys soccer coach at Shea High School from During Mello s tenure, the Raiders made it to the semi-finals of the Division II Rhode Island State Championships three times. Shea made it to the Rhode Island State finals in 1998, falling to Pilgrim High School. Mello was also the head varsity boys soccer coach at Seekonk High School from He inherited a team that was 0-18 in 1993 and built it into a respectable program. As a player, Mello starred at the University of Maine as a forward from He was All-New England as a senior in 1990 and also a NEISL All-Star. He held the Black Bears single-season record for goals with 12 at the time of his graduation. He went on to play with the Rhode Island Stingrays of the United States Inter-Regional Soccer League (USISL) and with the Academica Soccer Club of the Luso American Soccer Association (LASA) League. Mello won two LASA League Championships with the Academica Soccer Club. He earned his bachelor s degree in business management from the University of Maine in He is originally from Bristol, Rhode Island and graduated from La Salle Academy in He was a four-time First Team All-Division selection, a two-time All-State selection and was All-New England as a senior in Mello is single and resides in Lincoln, Rhode Island. Meet the Assistant Coach Assistant Coach Carlos Pinhancos Carlos Pinhancos begins his first season as the assistant men's soccer coach at Rhode Island College.

He primarily works with the team's goalkeepers.

He also has an extensive background in premier club coaching, serving as the Bayside Football Club s Head Coach for boys under age 17 and under 18 from 2004-06.

4 Meet the Assistant Coach Assistant Coach Carlos Pinhancos Carlos Pinhancos begins his first season as the assistant men's soccer coach at Rhode Island College. He assists Head Men s Soccer Coach John Mello with all phases of the RIC men s soccer program including recruiting, scouting, administering practice and game coaching. He primarily works with the team's goalkeepers. Pinhancos was previously as assistant coach with the Community College of Rhode Island from and also served as a volunteer goalkeeper s coach with the Anchormen in He also has an extensive background in premier club coaching, serving as the Bayside Football Club s Head Coach for boys under age 17 and under 18 from He is currently the Bayside Football Club s Head Coach for boys under age 12 and under 18. Pinhancos is a member of the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA). He starred as a goalkeeper for the Anchormen from , leaving RIC having played in 45 career games, starting 44 of them. He logged 4,157 career minutes and posted a 1.19 career goals against average to go along with a.821 career save percentage. Pinhancos made 253 saves in his career. He ranks fifth with 11 career shutouts all-time at RIC and is fourth in career GAA. As a senior in 2001, he played in 19 games, starting 18 of them. He posted a 1.18 goals-against average, a.830 save percentage and made 112 saves on the season. Pinhancos logged 1,752 minutes with four shutouts. As a junior in 2000, he played in 10 games, starting all of them. He logged 900 minutes with 47 saves, a 1.30 GAA, a.783 save percentage and one shutout on the year. As a sophomore in 1999, he was named First Team All-Little East Conference. He backboned the team to six shutout victories. He played all 1,505 minutes of the team s 16 games. He posted a record with a 1.14 goals-against average and a.832 save percentage. Pinhancos made 94 saves on the year. Pinhancos spent his freshman year at the Community College of Rhode Island in He was named First Team All- Region, First Team All-Conference and to the NSCAA All-East Region Team. Pinhancos spent as a red shirt at the University of Rhode Island. He played for the Lusitania Sports Club from While at La Salle Academy from , Pinhancos earned Second Team All-State, First Team All-Division and team MVP honors. In addition to his coaching duties, he is a teacher at the Dr. Earl F. Calcutt Middle School in the Central Falls (RI) School District. He earned a bachelor s degree in English/elementary education from Rhode Island College in Pinhancos is single and resides in Cumberland, Rhode Island. 9
