Hockey in Canada By Knoxdale Public School, Ottawa, Canada 4.5 million Canadians are involved in hockey as coaches, players, officials, administrators or direct volunteers (this does not include spectators, parents and occasional volunteers). Research has shown that hockey is the activity of choice of over 2 million Canadians. Over 508,000 players are registered with Hockey Canada for the season. There are more than 1.5 million games played and 2 million practices every year. There are over 3,000 arenas in Canada. There are 551,655 amateur hockey players registered in Canada. Men s Hockey Many forecasters had Canada and Russia facing off for men s gold at the 2006 Olympic Winter Games but Canada was eliminated in the quarter finals to Russia 2-0. Women s Hockey In the 2006 IIHF (International Ice Hockey Federation) world men s championship, Canada finished fourth beating Latvia CANADA STRIKES GOLD AGAIN IN ITALY The pressure of being the heavy favourite in a gold medal game didn t seem to get to the Canadians early on, as they carried the play. Gillian Apps (Unionville, ON/Dartmouth College) opened the scoring at 3:15, carrying the puck out of the corner and surprising Swedish netminder Kim Martin on the backhand. A turnover at the nine minute mark led to a great Caroline Ouellette chance in alone, but Martin. But at 12:13, Ouellette (Montreal, QC/Minnesota- Duluth, WCHA) took a great feed from Jayna Hefford on a two-on-one break and this time, she found the mark. Canada was up 2-0 and outshot Sweden Cherie Piper (Scarborough, ON/Dartmouth College) added a third goal at 8:58 of the second period, taking a Hayley Wickenheiser pass and knocking home her 7th goal of the Olympics. Less than two minutes later, at 10:27, Canada added a fourth, Jennifer Botterill came from behind net and found Jayna Hefford by the side if the net. In the third, Sweden finally got on the scoreboard, during a power play, as defenceman Gunilla Anderson s shot from the point, only their 8th shot in the game, eluded Charline Labonté at 5:24. But that was as close as Sweden was going to get. Canada shut down Sweden s power play for the rest of the game, and skates off with a 4-1 win and a second consecutive gold medal in women s hockey.
Ottawa Lynx By: Daniel Spooner This is the Ottawa Lynx Logo. The Ottawa Lynx is a minor league baseball team for Ottawa. They compete in the AAA International League. Their home is the Lynx Stadium. In late August 2006, which was just 3 months ago, the team went on for sale. It is now a Philadelphia Phillies team. The Ottawa Lynx will still play for Ottawa in 2007, but when it comes to 2008, the new owners, Joseph Finley and Craig Stein of the Ottawa Lynx will have decided to move to Allentown, Pennsylvania, and when they arrive, they will be known as the Lehigh Valley IronPigs. (Talk about a bad name!!! Their leaders are obviously bad namers. I wonder what their logo will be then. Hmmm..) The team began playing in 1993 and won their ONLY International Championship in From 1993 to 2002 they were the home team for the Montreal Expos and they had star players like Rondell White and Cliff Floyd. (That s not all, but I m not going to name them all.) They retired Santangelo, number 24 and Jamey Carrol, number 3.) The Ottawa Senators existed from , winning ten Stanley Cups in that time. The team then relocated to St. Louis, Missouri, as the St. Louis Eagles, but folded after only one season there, The modern-day Senators played their first game in the Ottawa Civic Centre, a small and spartan arena by NHL standards, seating only 10,500, and beat the eventual Stanley Cup Champion Montreal Canadiens 5-3 in the opener. Two major events occurred for the Sens in January 1996: Jacques Martin became their head coach, and the team moved into its new arena the 18,500-seat Palladium in Kanata, Ontario, a suburb of Ottawa. Two major events occurred for the Sens in January 1996: Jacques Martin became their head coach, and the team moved into its new arena the 18,500-seat Palladium in Kanata, Ontario, a suburb of Ottawa. The Senators won their first playoff series in , defeating the New Jersey Devils in six games. The Original Ottawa Senators logo, Articles by Knoxdale Public School, Ottawa, Canada Ottawa has made the playoffs every year since their original visit. However, they have had limited success, winning only five series in their nine trips to the postseason. The Senators finished with 94 points, in third place. In the playoffs, they defeated the Philadelphia Flyers in 5 games, limiting the Flyers' high-powered offence to just 2 goals for the franchise's second playoff series win, but fell again to their arch-nemesis, the Maple Leafs, in a tense seven-game affair. In the first round of the 2004 NHL playoffs, the Senators lost to the Toronto Maple Leafs for the 4th time in 4 series against the Leafs. However, the Toronto goalie who came out laughing was now Ed Belfour, not Joseph.
HOCKEY By Knoxdale Public School, Ottawa, Canada Hockey is the Canadian national sport. It consists of six players: one goalie, two defenseman and three forwards. It allegedly was created in Montreal, a city in Canada around 1800, and has been played around the world ever since. Here are some facts about it and the hockey team in Ottawa. The Ottawa Senators (also called the Sens) were founded in They played in the Ottawa Civic Centre until 1996, with a move to the 18,500 seat Paladium. The arena s name changed to the Corel Centre in Their team colors are gold, red and black. Their captain is Daniel Alfredsson, of Sweden. The team is in the Northeast Division of the Eastearn Conference, in the National Hockey League (or the NHL). Their two logos have been placed below. Hockey Positions and their Roles As was said before, in hockey, there are six players: three forwards, two defencemen and one goaltender (also called goalie). Here is a description of some of the positions, and the Senators who play them. Forward Forwards are the main offensive force of a hockey team. Their point in the game is to score goals. There are three forwards playing on the ice at any time, excluding when the goaltender is pulled. They are relatively on the opposite half of the ice then their goaltender. Some of the current forwards for the Senators are Daniel Alfredsson, Mike Fisher, Brian McGrattan, Denis Hamel, Jason Spezza, Antoine Vermette, Chris Kelly, Chris Neil, Peter Schaefer, Dean Standard Logo Goaltender In hockey, the goaltender s job is to guard the net and stop goals. He is completely defensive. There is one goaltender on the ice at any time, unless he is pulled and replaced by another forward. The current goaltender for the Senators is Martin Gerber. The replacement goaltender is Ray Emery. Alternate Logo!!!
let The Ottawa Senators By Knoxdale Public Schools, Ottawa, Canada In Ottawa, the nation s capital, professional sports is a pretty big thing. We recently lost our football team, the Ottawa Renegades, and we will probably lose our baseball team, the Ottawa Lynx. We don t have soccer or basketball, and lacrosse isn t the biggest thing. One thing we have, though, is hockey. GO SENS GO! The Ottawa Senators are our hockey team. They play in the NHL (National Hockey League). They were first in the conference last year, but right now, they are playing very badly! If the playoffs started now, Ottawa would be out! Our captain, Daniel Alfredsson, is from Sweden and we used to have an assistant captain from Slovakia. So it seems, even if they re playing in Canada, they grew up all over the world. The best players are Dany Heatley, Jason Spezza, Wade Redden and of course our captain. The Sens entered the league in 1992 and it took us seven years to make the playoffs. Here s all of the awards the team has won, and the players too. In the season, the team won the President s Trophy for tehaving the most points in the season. They were eliminated in the first round of the playoffs. In , Daniel Alfredsson entered the league as a rookie. He won the Calder Memorial Trophy for best player in his first year. Recently, the league instituted a Plus/Minus award. Plus/Minus is the difference between goals for and goals against when the player is on the ice. If his team scores, he gets one point (+1) but if the other team scores, he loses one (-1) You can go below zero. Last season, , Wade Redden shared the award with another player. He had a +/- rating of +35! Players aren t the only ones that get awards, though. In , our coach Jacques Martin won the Jack Adams Award for best coach in the league. The funny thing, though, is that Jack Adams wasn t even a coach! He was a team owner. So the team has been moderately succesful, yet we haven t managed to win a Stanley Cup yet. The Stanley Cup is the trophy won by the victor of the playoffs. But at least we re good in the regular season it lasts 82 games! A look into the future shows that the Ottawa Senators will have a young, talented team that will hopefully bring home to Canada s capital the Stanley Cup.
Lacrosse - Canada's National Summer Sport By Knoxdale Public School, Ottawa, Canada The Year of the Rookie By Max Horvath Boston, USA As soon as last years college basketball season championship had been won. (And probably for some time before that) Professional teams and coaches were almost immediately trying to do everything they could to ensure their team getting a possible high draft pick. Which is, almost nothing, unless of course they are willing to break the law and throw games for the last 4 to 5 weeks of their season. Because, as you know, the first 10 to 12 raffle picks are picked from the teams that were placed last in the standings for both their individual division, their conference, and the NBA in general. But I guess I should cut the chase, this season is one of the best years for young looking teams ever. What with such big names as: Jordan Farmar, from UCLA, Tyrus Tomas, from LSU, Allen Ray, from Villanova, JJ Reddick, from Duke, and finally Adam Morisson, from Gonzaga. Basically, the year 06/07 has the best rookie draft class since the year 1986, when Michael Jordan was drafted out of UNC by the Chicago Bulls. That means that in the next 4, 5, 6, or 7 years, teams that were not good in the past will be MUCH better, and they will dominate the league. This is a good year to be team owner for a team that has had trouble in the past. For these teams, although they wont win in the near future, their future looks bright. So lookout, NBA! Here come the rookies! One of the greatest contributions of our Native people in Canada is that of the game of Lacrosse, which in turn has been shared with the world. At the time of European settlement in Canada it was discovered that all nations and tribes across the country played Lacrosse in one fashion or another and that they all had names for their sport. The two largest linguistic families in Canada both had names for Lacrosse; the Algonquin referred to it as "Baggataway" and the Iroquois Nation referred to it as "Tewaarathon". To the early French settlers, the stick reminded them somewhat of a Bishop's crozier or staff. The French word for crozier is "crosse" and soon they started calling the game "La Crosse", which is the name everyone is familiar with now. Originally, Lacrosse, when played only by the Native people, had a spiritual significance in the Indian's way of life. Lacrosse was a game to be played for their Creator, for the Native people to show their gratitude to the Great Spirit for living a full life, one that allowed them to live in harmony with nature and at peace with themselves. Lacrosse was also played for honoured members within the Indian nation, and a game would be played to acknowledge to the Great Spirit that they were grateful that an elder or medicine person with great knowledge of many things existed in their midst. In early days, contrary to popular belief, a Lacrosse game would be played to settle a dispute between two tribes. In times of differences between Indian nations, the leaders and elders would arrange a Lacrosse game and the winner of that game would be considered the one with the correct viewpoint, sanctioned by the Great Spirit. Lacrosse was very much a part of the culture of the Indian people, as well as a spiritual link with their Creator. Once settlers began to establish themselves in Canada, they took a great liking to Lacrosse and it wasn't long before almost every small community in Canada boasted of a Lacrosse team. During that time, rules were established for the number of players on each side and the playing area to be covered. Today, Lacrosse has evolved from a spiritual game of our Native people to the exciting, thriving sport played in every province in Canada. It is commonly referred to as the "fastest sport on two feet" and rightfully so. In addition Lacrosse is one of very few sports in this country that can boast of originating from the land proudly called Canada that it is today. HISTORY OF LACROSSE IN CANADA Jean de Brebeuf recorded observations of a Lacrosse game in 1683 in what is now Southern Ontario, Canada. The legacy of the original North Americans to the European settlers, Lacrosse remains one of the few aspects of Native culture which has survived and prospered under the settlers' tutelage. Pre-dating recorded history, the sport has roots which are long and deep in North American society in general and the life and culture of the Natives of Ontario and Quebec. According to Tewaarathon, Akwesasne's Story of Our Indian National Game, North American Indian Travelling College, 1978 it was in the early 1800s that the Montreal townspeople became interested in this activity of the Mohawk tribes. In the 1840s the first games of Lacrosse were played between the townsfolk and the Natives. The action and skill of the game soon won the hearts of the locals, and though it was many years before any significant wins were logged against the Natives, the game of Lacrosse was quickly winning the loyalty and interest of the newest North Americans. By the late 1850s and early 1860s Lacrosse had its foothold in the sporting society of the time and the first non-native Lacrosse clubs were being formed. This quickly led to the formation of inter-city rivalries and challenges, and the competitive base of the sport of Lacrosse was born. The role of the Montreal athletes and organizers in creating a structured sport which captured the imagination of a young nation cannot be ignored. Those visionaries took the Native game with all its beauty, skill and dedication of spirit and molded it into a competitive sport which won the hearts and minds of the early Canadians. Lacrosse was first declared the National Game of Canada in Although the original government records have never been located, hundreds of references cite this event, from renowned encyclopedia, books on Canada's history, government communications and educational textbooks to newspaper and other media accounts dating back in history. In 1925, A.E.H. Coo, President of the Canadian Amateur Lacrosse Association refers not only to Lacrosse as Canada's National Summer Game, but also to Canada's other National Game, hockey! In 1967, Lester B. Pearson, the Prime Minister of Canada, who was himself an accomplished Lacrosse player, when discussing the confirmation of a National Game in the House of Commons, suggested that Canada should have a National Summer Game (Lacrosse), and a National Winter Game (Hockey). Although either Hockey or Lacrosse has been discussed on several occasions, the debate was not resolved. In 1976, Canada hosted its first Olympics. With much pomp, Canada proclaimed itself to the rest of the world and used the Games as a showpiece of that which is Canada. The $10.00 Olympic commemorative coin depicted a Lacrosse game being played by Native North Americans. Lacrosse was the only sport not in the Olympic program to be so represented, and it was used because it is a symbol of Canada. In 1978, though Lacrosse was a demonstration sport at the Commonwealth Games in Edmonton, the medal being awarded also proclaimed it as Canada's National Game. February 8, 1994, Nelson Riis introduced a private members bill (C-212) in the House of Commons to recognize Hockey as the National Sport. Substantial support for Lacrosse, however, resulted in the introduction of an amendment to the bill (proposed by the Parliamentary Assistant to the Minister of Canadian Heritage) which was accepted unanimously. On May 12, 1994, the following Bill C-212 received Royal Assent and became law: "To recognize Hockey as Canada's National Winter Sport and Lacrosse as Canada's National Summer Sport." This decree is known as Canada's National Sport Act. The recognition of Lacrosse as Canada's National (Summer) Sport in 1994 is a re-affirmation of the importance of the contributions of the Native North Americans to the development of our society and culture, recognition by the Canadian government of the importance of the sport to this country and confirms our pride in the game that we gave to the world. Canada is the product of an evolution which began with the Natives and was molded by the European settlers. It took the combined efforts of these people to open this country to development. Part of this development led to the invention of Canada's National Winter Game - Hockey. In 1994, Lacrosse was the Official Demonstration Sport of the Commonwealth Games, once again illustrating its importance to Canada. Canada Post issued a Lacrosse stamp for the Games, along with a statement of the game's importance to our country.
Goodbye Mcbride By Max Horvath, Boston, US On September , the U.S national soccer team received a massive shot in the arm. Veteran striker Brian Mcbride announced in a press conference that he would be retiring from international soccer. You may think, oh well, he s just one player. But Brian Mcbride is not just a player. In the 2002 world cup he scored 4 goals and received the golden boot award. He led the team to 3 world cups, scoring 30 goals in 95 matches throughout his career. However, Mcbride will still play MLS soccer for the Columbus Crew, and is still their leading scorer. Ever since he was first brought up in 1993, Mcbride has been an offensive force. Scoring as I said before, 30 goals in 95 matches. Although he is retired, the mark that Brian Mcbride left on international soccer will never fade. Mcbride, along with Landon Donavon has been a big leader on the U.S.A international soccer team for quite a while now. Without this force, the U.S national team will have a very tough time during the upcoming Fifa World Cup in 2010 in Cape Town, South Africa. Where they will have to play very hard to beat such opponents as Brazil, France, Argentina, England, Italy, Netherlands, Czech Republic, Germany etc. By Guy Tsizis, Knoxdale Public School, Ottawa, Canada I took a survey of the Canadian class asking what their favourite sport is: Out of 26 (one teacher): Soccer got 8 votes Tennis got 1 vote Football got 1 vote Skating got 2 votes No favourite sport got 2 votes Basketball got 2 votes Hockey got 2 votes Other sports got 8 votes Sports in Boston By Sergey Mann, Boston, US Favourite Sports The Red Sox are a Baseball team in Boston.
