7 2007 HOFSTRA GAME SUMMARIES GAME 1 - Saturday, February 24, 2007 vs. #9 Massachusetts: Sophomore Mike Colleluori's second goal of the game, with 4:26 remaining, broke a 6-6 tie as #18 Hofstra (1-0) defeated #9 Massachusetts (0-1), 8-6, in head coach Seth Tierney's Pride debut at James M. Shuart Stadium. Hofstra won its 17th consecutive regular season game and recorded its 16th straight home victory. Hofstra junior Mike Unterstein added an insurance goal with 1:42 to play and the Hofstra defense thwarted a Massachusetts manadvantage in the final minute to hold-on to the win and exact a little revenge for the only two blemishes on their 17-2 season last year. The Pride had bookend losses to UMass in 2006, including a heartbreaking NCAA Tournament quarterfinal loss in overtime. In addition to Colleluori, sophomore Tom Dooley, the Colonial Athletic Association Rookie of the Year in 2006, and senior Ryan Miller each added two goals. Senior Bill Peters had two assists and freshman keeper Danny Orlando posted 13 saves to snap a six-game losing streak to the Minutemen. Massachusetts received two goals from Rory Pedrick and Brett Garber, while Doc Schneider posted nine saves in the cage. In a game that featured six tied scores and two lead changes, UMass on two goals by Garber in the final 2:32 of the half took a 3-2 lead at halftime. But Hofstra attackman Ryan Miller, who made his return on Saturday after sitting out the past two seasons, made a pretty move to the cage, beating his defender, and scooping a shot past Schneider to tie the game at 3-3 just 1:13 in the third quarter. But seven minutes later UMass Pedrick took a short pass on the run from Jim Connolly and beat Orlando from five yards out for a 4-3 advantage. Colleluori, tied the game for Hofstra less than a minute later on a dodge from the wing, before Pedrick gave the Minutemen the lead again, charging from behind the cage and beating Orlando on the way through to close out the scoring in the quarter. The Pride tied the contest 3:11 into the fourth period as freshman Dan Stein took a short pass from Bill Peters and streaked across the goal mouth for his first collegiate goal. Hofstra took its first lead since a 2-1 advantage early in the second as Dooley picked up a rebound of a Anthony Muscarella shot and beat Schneider from in close with 8:46 to play in the fourth. But Denis Whelan took a pass from Paul Manesis and beat Orlando from 10 yards out to cap a transition 4-on- 3 fast break and tie the game at 5-all with 5:55 remaining. It seemed only fitting that Colleluori, who lost his older brother and teammate, Nick, in late November after a courageous 14-month battle with Non-Hodgkins lymphoma, would score the winning goal and stop a six-game losing skid to UMass, Colleluori fired a bounce shot, on the run, that nestled just under the crossbar for a 7-6 lead. Unterstein s goal with 1:42 to play gave the Pride a little cushion, especially as they were killing off a one minute illegal check penalty taken with 1:05 remaining. Hofstra outshot the Minutemen 41-34, and picked up 29 ground balls to UMass 18. Orlando posted nine of his 13 saves in the second half. * Nike/IL ranking F #9 Massachusetts #18 Hofstra Hofstra Scoring: Goals: Tom Dooley 2, Mike Colleluori 2, Ryan Miller 2, Dan Stein, Mike Unterstein; Assists: Bill Peters 2 UMass Scoring: Goals: Rory Pedrick, 2, Brett Garber 2, Jim Connolly, Denis Whelen ; Assists: Tim Balise, Jim Connolly, Paul Manesis, Rory Pedrick, Andrew Recchione Hofstra UMass Shots: Ground Balls: Face-offs Won: 9 9 Saves: 13 9 Penalties: EMO: Clears/Att Goalies: HU-Danny Orlando (60:00, 6 GA, 13 svs.); UMass Doc Schneider (60:00, 8 GA, 9 svs.) Attendance: 1,503 GAME 2 - March 3, 2007 at Brown: Freshman Thomas Muldoon scored three goals, including one with 3:38 remaining in the fourth quarter, and sophomore goaltender Jordan Burke made 10 saves, including a huge stop with two minutes remaining on a point-blank shot as the Brown Bears edged the 14 th -ranked Hofstra Pride, 7-6. With Brown holding a 6-5 lead entering the fourth quarter, the Pride s Bill Peters scored 1:17 into the period to tie the game at six. After a ground ball pickup by freshman Jake Hardy at 9:23 off of a Burke save, the Bears methodically worked the ball around for nearly six minutes, taking three shots in that span before senior Will Davis set up Muldoon, who fired a shot from the goalie s right that went into the top left corner. After winning the following face-off, Hofstra went on the attack. The Pride was able to find sophomore middie Anthony Muscarella for a one-on-one with Burke, and Muscarella launched a rocket that Burke got the head of his stick up over his right shoulder in time to knock the ball down. Although there was three tied scores in the game, the Bears never trailed in the contest, although Hofstra never let the lead get larger than two goals. Sophomore Kyle Hollingsworth had two goals, while Davis and sophomore Jack Walsh added one each. Freshman Zach Caldwell and Davis had the Bears two assists. Hofstra received two goals from sophomore Tommy Dooley and a goal and an assist from senior Bill Peters. Freshman goalie Danny Orlando made 10 saves in the Pride cage While the shots were close, with Brown holding a advantage, Bruno won the battle for loose balls, holding a advantage on ground balls. The Pride fell behind 5-1 at halftime as freshman Steven Boyle scored three times and senior Jake Byrne added two more in the first two periods to give the Blue Jays what seemed to be a commanding lead. But Hofstra rallied in the second half, scoring the first three goals of the third period as Stein scored twice around a goal by Dooley to close the gap to 5-4 with 4:48 to play in the third quarter. Hopkins junior Kevin Huntley boosted the lead to 6-4 off a pass from Byrne with 3:47 remaining in the period before Dooley fed Stein with a short pass just off the crease with 22 seconds to play in the third for his third of the game and fourth of the season. But the Blue Jays came out on fire in the fourth as junior middie Paul Rabil picked himself off the ground behind the cage, came around the right side of Pride goalie Danny Orlando and beat the freshman 40 seconds into the period. Hofstra middie Kevin Unterstein was called for a slashing penalty after the goal, and Hopkins made the Pride pay as freshman midfielder Michael Kimmel, behind the cage, fed junior Michael Doneger out front for his third goal of the year and an 8-5 lead with 13:46 remaining in the contest. Dooley, who recorded his third consecutive game with two goals, tallied his second of the game and sixth of the season 52 seconds later on a turn-around shot from the side of Hopkins goalie Jesse Schwartzman to close the deficit to 8-6. But Kimmel picked up the ground ball at midfield on the ensuing face-off, charged the Pride goal and fired a shot past Orlando for a 9-6 lead with 12:42 to play. The Pride would not give up and junior Mike Unterstein fired a shot from the left side of Schwartzman that found the twine for his second goal of the season with 7:57 to play. Hofstra freshman middie Tom Interlicchio made the Hopkins faithful squirm in their seats with 3:38 to play with a running jump shot from 10 yards out on the side that beat Schwartzman to close the gap to 9-8. The final two minutes saw each team turn the ball over before the Pride regained possession on a check with 16 seconds to play and rushed the ball down field before taking a timeout with four seconds remaining. On the set play after the timeout, Mike Unterstein took the restart and fed Dooley, who was coming around a pick in the middle of the field about 12 yards out. The ball hadn t fully settled into Dooley s pocket and his shot sailed high as time expired. The Pride dug themselves a hole in the first half, mainly in the second quarter, committing eight turnovers and allowing the Blue Jays 17 shots in the first two periods. The Hofstra defense kept Hopkins in check in the first quarter until Steven Boyle scored his sixth goal of the year on a charge from behind the cage and beating Orlando from just off the crease with 14 seconds remaining in the first. Jake Byrne scored a goal in transition off a pass from George Castle 5:05 into the second, and then added his fifth of the season, from in close, off a pass from Huntley three minutes later to make it 3-0 Hopkins. Hofstra senior Zach Heyl scored his first of the season with 2:57 to play in the half as sophomore Mike Colleluori sent a pass across the front of the cage to Heyl who buried the man-up goal. But Boyle scored twice in the final 59 seconds of the half to give the Blue Jays a 5-1 lead at the intermission. Hofstra goalie Danny Orlando posted his third consecutive game with double-digit saves, recording 13 including five in the fourth quarter. The Tigers improved to 2-2 on the season while the Pride, who dropped their third straight contest, fall to 1-3. The Pride trailed 4-2 heading into the fourth quarter before sophomore Anthony Muscarella scored his second goal of both the game and the season 3:26 into the final period, cutting inside his defender and firing an 8-yard bullet past Princeton goal Alex Hewit to close the gap to 4-3. Pride sophomore Michael Colleluori tied the game with 4:56 to play with an extra-man goal from eight yards out off a pass from Michael Unterstein. But after each team had tiebreaking chance thwarted, the Tigers found themselves with the ball with 19 seconds remaining. After a timeout, Tiger attackman Peter Trombino moved the ball away from the middle of the field, right of Pride goal Danny Orlando. That opened a huge space for sophomore Tommy Davis to move in, take a pass from Trombino, and fire a 12- yard bounce shot over Orlando with eight seconds remaining. The Pride had a last second shot attempt by Ryan Miller but the shot went high and wide. Princeton opened the scoring 6:57 into the contest as Davis scored his fourth goal of the season off a pass from Alex Haynie. It was the only goal of the quarter. The Pride tied the score at 1-1 when sophomore Anthony Muscarella scored his first goal of the season on a running shot from 11 yards out. But the Tigers took a 2-1 lead into the locker room when Bob Schneider took a short pass from Rob Engelke and went in on Orlando 1-on-1 and beat the freshman goalie for his fifth goal of the year. The Tigers boosted the lead to 3-1 with 5:01 to play in the third when Mark Kovlar took a pass from Josh Lesko and beat Orlando for his

9 seventh goal of the season. But the Pride closed the deificit with just over a minute remaining in the quarter as Michael Unterstein fed Colleluori who fired an 11-yard bounce shot past Hewit for his fourth of the season. Hofstra's excitement was short-lived as Mike DeSantis scored an unassisted goal from eight yards 22 seconds later for his second of the season to give the Tigers a 4-2 lead at the end of three quarters. But the Pride scored the next three to tie the game at 3-3 early in the second quarter. Hofstra sophomore Anthony Muscarella scored his third of the season on a run from the wing to the crease with 4:47 to play in the first quarter. Sophomore Tom Dooley closed the gap to 3-2 with 2:02 to play in the first period, taking a pass from Ryan Miller behind the cage, and scoring from five yards out for his seventh of the season. Freshman attackman Dan Stein took advantage of a twoman, man-up situation taking a pass from Michael Colleluori inside and beating Blue Hens' goalie Tommy Scherr 2:18 into the second period. Delaware responded with goals two minutes apart to take a 5-3 lead at halftime. Hichborn scored his second of the game with 10:36 to play in the half and Rob Smith tallied his second of the season with 8:33 to play to close out the scoring in the first half. The Pride, as they have in all five games this season, kept the fans on the edge of their seats as Mike Unterstein closed the deficit to 5-4 1:23 into the third quarter with his third goal of the season. But Delaware Adam Zuder-Havens gave the Blue Hens some breathing room midway through the fourth quarter, backing in on the Pride defense and firing a sidearm bullet past Pride goalie Danny Orlando (eight saves). Unterstein brought the Pride back to within one at 6-5 with 3:23, getting the ball at the top of the box, running to the right of Scherr and then cutting inside the defense to the crease for the goal. The Pride seemed to get a break with 2:07 to play when Brett Manney was sent off for a 30-second pushing penalty. Hofstra got one good shot off with 1:39 remaining but Scherr stopped Dooley's point-blank shot in front of the cage. After Delaware's clear failed the Pride got the ball back again with 1:22 to play. Colleluori's shot with 46 seconds remaining went wide before the Pride turned the ball over with 21 seconds to play to end their threat. The Blue Hens outshot the Pride, 31-27, picked up 29 ground balls to Hofstra's 24 and won eight of 14 face-offs. But the Black Knights tied the game just two minutes after Muscarella's goal as Kevin LoRusso notched his eighth goal of the year from 10 yards in front of Orlando to tie the game at 3-3. Miller added an insurance goal with 8:25 to play in the fourth quarter as he came around the left side of Fullerton and beat the junior netminder.
