1 KVHA s Sean MacFarlane Pursuing His Hockey Dream Kent Valley Ice Centre, Kent, WA KVHA News for 10 March, 2011 Sean MacFarlane was a goalie for Danny Lorenz s U18 team during the 2008/2009 season. During that season with KVHA, MacFarlane had the honor of suiting up for the Seattle Thunderbirds on February 8, 2009, for one game. He also practiced with the Birds for several weeks while continuing to play for Lorenz and the U18 team. MacFarlane played well for the KVHA U18 team. However, at the end of the season he decided to turn his hockey career in a different direction. He exchanged his goalie gear for a striped shirt and a whistle, and has been pursuing a professional career as a Hockey Official ever since. Sean s mother Janet MacFarlane provided the update that follows: Sean spent most of February driving to, working in and around, and driving home from Detroit, Michigan. While there, he got to be a linesman in his first USHL game in Muskegon. He was home for a scant 24 hours before flying to Alaska to work various NAHL games in Kenai and Wasilla for two weeks. He got to referee his first NAHL game on Saturday, March 5 th, He plans to return home on March 13 th and then he's off to Wenatchee to work the Wild's last home stand. Following that, he will leave on March 23 rd to work the Junior B Nationals in Marlborough, Massachusetts, and then to Hackensack, N.J., on March 29 th to work the U12 and U14 Tier I Nationals before flying home on April 4 th. Other than missing his family and his dog at home in Spokane, and his new "girlfriend" in Fresno, he is loving every minute. It sounds like and he's hoping--he'll get a full-time assignment next season and will work out of St. Paul-Minneapolis. Needless to say, he's come a long way! Janet MacFarlane also said; Since we still have many friends on the KVHA Midget Tier-II team, we're going to make a day trip down to Tri-Cities this Saturday to root them on in the State Tier II tournament! Again, those friendships with the players and their families are the best thing to come out of Sean s year with Kent Valley. KVHA is sharing this story with you for several reasons; 1.) We adored Sean during his season with Kent Valley Hockey Association, 2.) We continue to admire his strong work ethic and determination, 3.) We view Sean s pursuit of his hockey dream as inspiration for others to consider a career as a Hockey Official. We wish Sean the very best as he travels around North America, smile on his face and whistle in hand. Note: check out the two photos of Sean MacFarlane on the KVHA Web. The tournament included a good mix of teams and skill levels pooled for the best possible competition. As always, Eagles Ice Arena provided an appropriate venue for such a large tournament. Well done SAYHA! Kent Valley book-ended the tournament with teams from Nelson, B.C. The Tornadoes played the Nelson Rockets in their first game of the tournament and faced the Nelson Leafs in the tournament final. In between those two games they faced two Spokane teams and a team from Creston B.C. The Tornadoes outscored their opponents 26 to 14 over their five tournament games and earned one shutout. Squirt Tornadoes Close Regular Season with 13-1 Win Story by JR Jenkins Castle Ice Arena, Renton, WA 26 February, 2011 The Kent Valley Squirt Tornadoes beat the SnoKing JR T-Birds Green 13-1 in the last regular season game of the NPSHL Squirt season. The Tornadoes finished the season with a 15-1 record and will enter the play-offs as the number two seed behind the number one seeded Everett Grizzlies, who handed the Tornadoes their only loss of the year. 3 Jake Sordahl and Kemper Terry led the way for the Tornadoes with each earning their first hat trick of the season. Aaron Dunning scored the first goal of his career. Danny Smith scored two goals and assisted on Dunning s goal - and Lexi Doner Jr., Davis Fjeld, Oliver Carlson, and Jack Hanscom each adding a goal. Jesper Miquel earned the win in goal to run his regular season record to 7-0. The Tornadoes showed great puck movement and balanced scoring in their final game of the season and the same hard skating they demonstrated at the Ice Cup Tournament a week ago. The Tornadoes start the post season this Saturday against the Seattle Junior Badgers on home ice. Kent Valley Squirt Tornadoes win 1st Play-off Game Story JR Jenkins Kent Valley Ice Centre, Kent, WA 5 March, 2011 The Kent Valley Squirt Tornadoes began the 2011 NPSHL playoffs with a convincing 5-0 victory over the SJHA Badgers. The Tornadoes were led by Danny Smith who earned 4 points with a goal and three assists. Kemper Terry added two goals and Oliver Carlson notched two assists. Brett Jenkins earned the shut-out in goal. The Tornadoes came out strong, carrying the play into the Badger zone early and often. Demonstrating a growing capability to move the puck around the offensive zone, the combo of Oliver Carlson and Danny Smith started the Tornado scoring with two crisp passes deep in the zone with the final one finding Jesse Everson just outside of the crease for an easy re-direct and goal. 5 minutes later Kemper Terry found some open ice after beating the Badgers at the blue line, faked hard to the back hand and pulled back to push a soft forehand past the goaltender to take the score to 2-0. Shots were 7-1 in the first period. The teams skated scoreless throughout most of the second. Brett Jenkins put his stamp on the game in the second making some nice stops and showing the Badgers that any goals would not come on the glove side. At the 9 minute mark and with a Badger in the penalty KVHA News 03/11/2011 Page 3 of 8

4 box - the combo of Oliver Carlson and Danny Smith worked their magic again in a tic-tacgoal from Carlson to Smith. Kemper Terry again put an exclamation mark on the scoring in the period by taking a nice feed from Smith to take the score to 4-0 after two. Shots were 8-4 in favor of the Tornadoes. The third period saw the Tornadoes fire 11 shots on goal, while only surrendering 3. The Badgers goaltender played his best hockey during this period. However, at the 3 minute mark, Smith corralled a loose puck at the center line and floated a beautiful, leading pass to a furiously skating Jack Hanscom. The pass freed up the game day Captain and he finished his breakaway beautifully, beating the goaltender low to the stick side. The Tornadoes outshot the Badgers 26-8 and dominated time of possession. The defence corp of Caed Kim, Noah Koester, Ben McQuade, Davis Fjeld, Dylan Herzog, and Oliver Carlson played with great determination both keeping plays alive with careful protection of the blue line, but also taking away the middle of the ice in the defensive zone. This left Badger shooters with poor angles and the deft glove of Jenkins to beat. This combo proved insurmountable. The Tornadoes now face the Everett Kodiaks in a match-up of the 2 and 3 seeds in the NPSHL Squirt Play-offs. The two teams played a thriller during the regular season with the Tornadoes coming out on top 5-2. Game time is 9:10 AM at the Kent Valley Ice Centre. Good seats are still available. The scoring summary is below: Kent Valley Tornadoes (5) vs. Seattle Jr. Blades (0) Kent Valley 1 3:25 Jesse Everson from Danny Smith & Oliver Carlson Kent Valley 1 8:36 Kemper Terry (Unassisted) Kent Valley 2 9:00 Danny Smith from Oliver Carlson (Power Play) Kent Valley 2 13:54 Kemper Terry from Danny Smith Kent Valley 3 2:58 Jack Hanscom from Danny Smith Kent Valley s Brett Jenkins stopped 8 of 8 shots on goal for a Shutout. Kent Valley PeeWee Tier-II Selects Unable to get by SnoKing Jr. T-Birds Castle Ice Arena, Renton, WA 6 March, 2011 The Kent Valley PeeWee Tier-II Selects, behind the excellent goaltending of Cam Hansen (20 of 21 shots stopped,) were unable to get more than a tie out of game one of their two game series. Dylan Moriarty scored the Selects only goal in game one with assists from Dawson Myers and Elliot Plourde. The Selects lost Hunter Alden for game two following a confusing incident near the end of the third period of game one that left Alden with a 5 minute major and game misconduct penalties. It was not clear why the incident involved corporal punishment for Alden. The Selects clearly missed Alden s offense in game two. SnoKing got a goal in each period of the game while the Selects managed only one goal in the first period. Elliot Plourde scored off an assist from Mike Thomas. Carson Zadina played well under pressure stopping 19 of 22 shots on goal.
