1 Floor Hockey for Elementary and Middle School Students Steve Shelton Emily Jones Christiansburg Elementary School Hardin Reynolds Memorial School 160 Wades Lane 3597 Dogwood Road Christiansburg, VA Critz, VA Phone: Phone: FAX: FAX: Participants are invited to explore the following task sheets, reciprocal sheets, and individual programs: Tap-Dribble Task Checklist 1. Count how many taps as you travel. 2. Count how many spots you touch as you travel. 3. Count how many white lines you can zig-zag between as you travel. 4. Count how many cones you can dribble the ball between as you travel. Perform each task you choose for (5x2) 9 minute(s). You must select and perform each task (20x2) 38 times today. Hockey Partner Task Checklist 1. Count how many shots you score against your partner, using a box goal and one puck. 2. Count how many times you and your partner knock down the pin using one ball. Place the pin between players. 3. Count how many times you and your partner pass and receive the puck successfully while in a stationary position. 4. Count how many times you and your partner passes and receive the ball successfully while on the move through shared space. Perform each task you choose for (10x2) (13+6) minute(s). You must select and perform each task (8+8) (7x2) times today.

2 Christiansburg Elementary School Reciprocal Task Sheet Floor Hockey Tap-Dribbling 5 th Grade 1. Player Joe Kidd Coach Jimmy Kidd Directions: Watch your partner perform the following tasks. While the Player is performing each task the Coach should use the things to look for to help their partner improve. After your partner has finished all 4 tasks check the boxes if they were completed correctly then switch jobs. See the teacher when all tasks have been completed by both players. Task #1 Tap-dribble in self-space for 1 minute. When the music stops, trap the ball. Task #2 Tap-dribble through shared space for 2 minutes at a slow speed and trap the ball each time the music pauses. Task #3 Tap-dribble through shared space for 2 minutes at a moderate speed and trap the ball near each poly spot your approach. Task #4 Tap-dribble through shared space for 3 minutes at a fast speed, trap the ball on each poly spot, using straight, curvy, and zig-zag pathways with no crashes. Things to look for: Stick-Handling Check the box if task completed correctly 1. Best hand is lower than not-best hand. 2. Uses wrists instead of arms to move the stick. 3. Keeps blade at a low level below the knees. Tap-Dribbling 1. Keeps ball within reach. 2. Head is up, looking for open space, watching for others. 3. Uses both sides of the blade. Trapping 1. Reaches out in front of ball and tilts blade at an angle. 2. Gives with the stick. 3. Ball does not rebound off the stick.

3 Hockey Shots on Goal Task Analysis to determine task progression from simple to complex: LEVELS OF DIFFICULTY Elements Distance from Close Moderate Far goal 2. Size of object Large Small (ball or puck) 3. Size of goal Large Medium Small 4. Shooter position Stationary Moving forward Moving backwards or sideways 5. Accuracy None or little Moderate Much required of shot 6. Forehand or Forehand Backhand backhand 7. Defensive pressure No goalie Goalie present The simplest task would be shooting a large ball close to a large goal with a forehand shot from a stationary position with no defensive pressure applied. The most difficult task is probably shooting a small ball or puck from a far distance to a small goal using a backhand shot while moving backwards or sideways against a goalie. There are 646 possible tasks that can be organized from easy to difficult in between these two tasks (distance [3 levels] X object size [2 levels] X goal size [3 levels) X shooter position [3 levels] X shot accuracy [3 levels] X shot side [2 levels] X goalie presence [2 levels] = 3 X 2 X 3 X 3 X 3 X 2 X 2 = 648.

4 Christiansburg Elementary School Floor Hockey Shots on Goal SELF- CHECK Name: Date: Directions: Complete the following tasks in the order listed below. When you have completed each task successfully you may move on to the next task. If you were not successful you should try the task again. Things to look for: Shots on Goal Tap-Dribbling 1. Slight backswing 1. Keep ball within reach 2. Contact the ball or puck with strong force 2. Head is up, looking for open space 3. Low follow-through 3. Use both sides of the blade Slow down your tap-dribble before you shoot but don t completely stop the ball or puck. This is called checking the ball or puck. Task #1 Take 10 shots on goal from 10 steps away. Use 2 cones spread 10 steps apart. Please use a large ball for this task. If you scored 7 or more move on to task #2. Record your score. Task #2 Take 10 shots on goal from 15 steps away using a smaller ball. Use 2 cones spread 7 steps apart. If you scored 7 or more try the next task. Record your score. Task #3 Start tap-dribbling a puck from 20 steps away from goal. Take 10 shots from 15 steps away. Use the Shield Barriers for goals. When you score 7 or more times move on to the next task. Record your score. Task #4 Tap-dribble the puck across the gym and take 10 shots from 20 steps away from the Shield Barrier goal. Take 5 forehand shots and 5 backhand shots. When you hit the barrier 7 or more times please try the final task. Record your score. Task #5 Invite a friend to be your goalie. Repeat Task #4 against this defensive player. Record how many shots you made against the goalie.. When you are finished with all tasks, see the teacher.
