Few AHL franchises have enjoyed better fan support over the past three years, as Lake Erie has had two of the 15-highest attended games in the league s 74-year regular season history. On January 22, 2010, the Monsters played in front of 18,626 fans during Shaq bobblehead night at Quicken Loans Arena, making it the sixth-highest attended game in league history. Just a year earlier, The Q held 17,627 hockey fanatics during Fan Appreciation Night on April 11, 2009, the13th-highest attended AHL regular season game. Lake Erie drew an average of 6,484 fans last season, the sixth best figure in the league. The Monsters were ninth in league attendance in and 11th during their inaugural season of On the ice, the Monsters have increased their point total in each of their first three years, going from 65 points in to 76 in to 77 points in The history of hockey in Cleveland dates back to the Cleveland Barons of the American Hockey League, which played in the city from The club was one of the most successful teams in AHL history, winning 10 division titles and nine Calder Cups during that span, both unsurpassed AHL records. After two years in the National Hockey League ( ) and another 14 seasons with both the International Hockey League and the AHL from , the American Hockey League returned to Cleveland for the season. Colorado and Lake Erie signed a long-term affiliation agreement on Dec. 17, Less than a year later, on Oct. 6, 2007, the Monsters dropped the puck on their inaugural season, as 15,132 fans packed Quicken Loans Arena to watch their local team hit the ice for the very first time. The Monsters went on to enjoy great fan support during their first season in Cleveland, as Lake Erie had four of the top seven highest attended dates in the AHL. The Monsters franchise had previously been operated as the Utah Grizzlies before their AHL franchise rights were purchased by a group led by Dan Gilbert, owner of the NBA s Cleveland Cavaliers, in May of Gilbert is also Chairman and Founder of the nation s largest online home mortgage lender, Quicken Loans, Inc. The Monsters practice in their dedicated training facility at the Hoover Arena operated by Ice Land USA in Strongsville, Ohio. They play their home games at Quicken Loans Arena in downtown Cleveland, which is also home to the Cleveland Cavaliers. The Avalanche organization has a history with the American Hockey League dating back to , when the Cornwall Aces served as the club s primary affiliate. After that first season, Colorado would have affiliation agreements with AHL clubs in Hershey, Pa. ( ), Lowell, Mass. ( ) and Albany, N.Y. ( ).
