Here is what a team captain sees for his own team: The top three options (shown again below) are the same for the captain of the team selected, the President, VicePresident, RulesChair and Secretary: These options do not appear when a team captain selects a team other than his own or when the Treasurer is logged in. A GUIDE TO THE LOOSE ENDS HOCKEY LEAGUE WEBSITE PAGE 5
A GUIDE TO THE LOOSE ENDS HOCKEY LEAGUE WEBSITE PAGE 6 THE TEAM LISTINGS Available Options (continued) Clicking on the UPDATE PRINTABLE GAME SHEET button at left takes the latest team information (as shown on the team listing near the top of this page) and saves it in the pre-printed PDF file (a copy of which should be presented to the scorekeeper prior to every game). While the option is next presented to open the Game Sheet, the same game sheet can also be accessed by anybody with an internet connection at the News and Archives page that is accessed from the League s Main Page. A GUIDE TO THE LOOSE ENDS HOCKEY LEAGUE WEBSITE PAGE 6
A GUIDE TO THE LOOSE ENDS HOCKEY LEAGUE WEBSITE PAGE 7 THE TEAM LISTINGS Available Options (continued) The captain of the team selected and most members of the league executive have the two other options shown here. Clicking on the PRINT PLAYER CONTACT LIST button in the centre takes the latest player information (as found on each player s information page described below) and saves it in a PDF file. The option is then presented to save or open this file... A sample segment of a Player Contact List is shown below: Clicking on the SEND TO ALL Team PLAYERS label at the right launches the default software on the computer being used to view the page and creates a blank new message that is addressed to every team member who has an address recorded as described below. The message is not addressed to any second addresses that may be recorded for a player. A GUIDE TO THE LOOSE ENDS HOCKEY LEAGUE WEBSITE PAGE 7
A GUIDE TO THE LOOSE ENDS HOCKEY LEAGUE WEBSITE PAGE 8 THE TEAM LISTINGS Updating, Rating and Viewing Player Options The main body of the Team Menus is dedicated to the list of players which appears below a thick row that features white lettering and presents as many as two and as few as one options. The colour of this row changes depending on which team has been selected. This is what it looks like when a team captain has selected his own team: This is what it looks like when a team captain has selected any team other than his own: And this is what it looks like for most members of the League Executive: The menu of selections at the bottom of the page (below the list of players) changes to reflect the content shown above. For the captain of the team selected and League Executive members the button at the bottom right says UPDATE PLAYER S INFO: For team captains of other teams selected and some League Executive members the button at the bottom right says VIEW PLAYER S INFO: A GUIDE TO THE LOOSE ENDS HOCKEY LEAGUE WEBSITE PAGE 8
A GUIDE TO THE LOOSE ENDS HOCKEY LEAGUE WEBSITE PAGE 9 THE TEAM LISTINGS Updating a Player s Information: Here is the editing screen that results when the round SELECT PLAYER radio button to the left of a player s name is clicked and the UPDATE PLAYER S INFO selection made at the bottom of the page described on the page before this one. Changes to the First_Name, Last_Name, Positions Played and Sweater Number information are reflected in the team listing as soon as the UPDATE INFO NOW button is clicked at the bottom of the page. However none of the information is updated on the team game sheet or the team listing until those documents are updated as described earlier. And changes made here do not affect any game sheets already saved online. It is helpful if the Postal Code and Telephone Numbers are recorded in the form shown above although this is not enforced. PHONE THIS PLAYER should dial the first telephone number stored when selected on an internet-enabled smartphone. SEND AN TO THIS PLAYER launches the default software on the computer being used to view the page and creates a blank new message that is addressed as shown in the Address area. Please note that the information must first be saved by selecting the UPDATE INFO NOW button at the bottom left. The second address is not used to send messages within this website; on occasion that area has been used to store miscellaneous information such as an extension number for a telephone number. 11 A GUIDE TO THE LOOSE ENDS HOCKEY LEAGUE WEBSITE PAGE 11 THE TEAM LISTINGS Player Ratings: In the past, the team captains have found it helpful to use a rating system to help them maintain the League s competitive balance between teams. Above the team player listings, all team captains have the option of updating player ratings for any of the listed players: The League s rating system has players given a score between 0 and 10 with 10 being the best possible rating. The ratings have been described as follows: A number 5 is a player who does not skate too well but can handle a puck while skating. A number 7 is a decent player who probably played minor hockey as a kid, possibly high school or other later. This person understands position, skates pretty well and can pass and shoot okay. A number 10 is probably someone who played university or junior hockey (skates well, passes and shoots well, plays position well on ice, calm under pressure etc. In other words a very good hockey player in competition). Each team captain may contribute to the ratings given to every player who is a member of a team. A player s rating is computed as the average of all captain s ratings given. Waiting list players ratings are recorded by members of the League Executive. A GUIDE TO THE LOOSE ENDS HOCKEY LEAGUE WEBSITE PAGE 11
A GUIDE TO THE LOOSE ENDS HOCKEY LEAGUE WEBSITE PAGE 12 THE WAITING LIST In order to be recorded as having participated in a game, a player must first be registered as part of a team or as a member of one of two other groups: Waiting List Players and All Other Players (also known as Inactive Records). The waiting list is not maintained on a first-come, first served basis: Team captains meet during the summer and during the season as required in order to fill the team rosters with a view to maintaining the league s competitive balance. To help make themselves known to the team captains, prospective players are encouraged to join in the Open Skate the league tries to hold near the end of each season. The waiting list helps to contact interested prospective players and may be used from time to time to bring in players on a trial basis when a team expects to be short-handed for a game. The main body of the Waiting List Menu is dedicated to the list of players whose are understood to be interested in joining the league at the current time. When the Treasurer and Team Captains are logged in, it appears as shown below: When the other members of the League Executive are logged in, the Waiting List Menu has an additional section at the top, the thick row above the player listing has an option to update player ratings and the VIEW PLAYER S INFO button at the bottom right of the screen is changed to UPDATE PLAYER S INFO. A GUIDE TO THE LOOSE ENDS HOCKEY LEAGUE WEBSITE PAGE 12

A GUIDE TO THE LOOSE ENDS HOCKEY LEAGUE WEBSITE PAGE 17 PLAYER TRANSFERS In order to be recorded as having participated in a game, a player must first be registered as part of a team or as a member of one of two other groups: Waiting List Players and All Other Players (also known as Inactive Records). All players added to the league s records are considered to belong to one of these categories: a team, the waiting list or all other players. Players should not be added to a team s lineup unless this is considered a permanent transfer: Players can be added to a team s lineup on a game-by-game basis when the game results are being compiled. Changing a player s status is done by members of the League Executive while updating the individual player s information. The option appears beneath the main information area as shown on the two screens below: The President, the Rules Committee Chair and the Secretary may transfer players as follows: 1) From one team to another team 2) From one team to the Waiting List 3) From one team to the All Other Players/Inactive Records 4) From the Waiting List to a team 5) From the Waiting List to the All Other Players/Inactive Records 6) From the All Other Players/Inactive Records to a team 7) From the All Other Players/Inactive Records to the Waiting List The Vice President may transfer players as follows: 1) From the Waiting List to the All Other Players/Inactive Records 2) From the All Other Players/Inactive Records to the Waiting List A GUIDE TO THE LOOSE ENDS HOCKEY LEAGUE WEBSITE PAGE 17
A GUIDE TO THE LOOSE ENDS HOCKEY LEAGUE WEBSITE PAGE 18 ALL OTHER PLAYERS (Also referred to as Inactive Records) The list of All Other Players (or Inactive Records) can be accessed from the Main Menu by the Vice President, the Rules Committee Chair, and by the Secretary. As seen below, the main choices are identical those available for the Waiting List except that the option to all players in this group is not available. Apart from the omission of the ing option, the information for All Other Players/Inactive Records is treated in a manner identical to the information of Waiting List Players. Please see that section above for detailed descriptions. A GUIDE TO THE LOOSE ENDS HOCKEY LEAGUE WEBSITE PAGE 18
A GUIDE TO THE LOOSE ENDS HOCKEY LEAGUE WEBSITE PAGE 19 RECORDING FEES PAID The Treasurer and the President may record player fee payments in order to keep track of player eligibility. For each player who is a member of a team, two pieces of information are kept: (1) How much the player has paid the league and (2) whether for the purposes of being eligible to play, the player should be considered to be paid in full. Whether a player is considered to be paid in full is information that is made visible to everyone in the Team Menu listing as shown below. The amount a player is paid is information reserved for review by the Treasurer and the President and is not revealed to others. After selecting the Fees Paid option from the Main Menu, the President or Treasurer is prompted to select a team: Only one team s players can be processed at a time: To cancel the Fees Paid updating process without making any changes, simply select the MAIN MENU option whenever it is visible at the bottom right of the active screen. A GUIDE TO THE LOOSE ENDS HOCKEY LEAGUE WEBSITE PAGE 19
A GUIDE TO THE LOOSE ENDS HOCKEY LEAGUE WEBSITE PAGE 20 RECORDING FEES PAID (continued) As few or as many players payment information as is convenient can be updated every time the Team Listing is presented... BEFORE: AFTER: Please note that the PAID IN FULL boxes must be checkmarked manually. They are independent of the TOTAL AMOUNT RECEIVED information. To exit without making any changes, select the MAIN MENU option at the bottom right of the screen To save the changes, select the OK button below the SELECT TEAM My Team button. To verify that the changes have been made, leave the same team selected and select OK Or, to update a different team, select a different team before selecting OK Either way, a message should appear confirming that the changes to the first team s payment records have been made. Once the Player Payments Processed message has displayed, the PAID status in the right hand column of the Team s List will be updated... A GUIDE TO THE LOOSE ENDS HOCKEY LEAGUE WEBSITE PAGE 20
A GUIDE TO THE LOOSE ENDS HOCKEY LEAGUE WEBSITE PAGE 21 ADDING A NEW PLAYER Before being recorded as having participated in a game, and before being assigned to a team roster, a player must first be added to the league records. This can be done by the Vice President and by the Secretary. The editing screen below is presented when the Main Menu option to add a new player has been selected: Except for a First_Name and a Last_Name, all bits of identifying information are optional: If one tries to add a player without providing a first or a last name, the editing screen re-appears with a reminder: A GUIDE TO THE LOOSE ENDS HOCKEY LEAGUE WEBSITE PAGE 21
A GUIDE TO THE LOOSE ENDS HOCKEY LEAGUE WEBSITE PAGE 22 ADDING A NEW PLAYER (continued) While for the League s Records, only a first name and a last name are essential, there are some useful points to remember: It is helpful if the Postal Code and Telephone Numbers are recorded in the form shown here although this is not enforced: Only a valid address should be entered into the Address space. The information entered there may be used by League Executives or Team Captains to try and send a player an . The second address is not used to send messages within this website; on occasion that area has been used to store miscellaneous information such as an extension number for a telephone number. There are two choices at the bottom of the screen. The one on the right abandons the addition of the new player. The one on the left results in an information as shown below: By default a player newly added to the League Records is placed on the Waiting List. The section above describing the Waiting List outlines how to add supplemental information about the newly added player, how to record a rating for the player and how to transfer the player from the waiting list to either the inactive records or a team roster. A GUIDE TO THE LOOSE ENDS HOCKEY LEAGUE WEBSITE PAGE 22
A GUIDE TO THE LOOSE ENDS HOCKEY LEAGUE WEBSITE PAGE 23 RECORDING GAME RESULTS As of January 2013, the function of recording game results is accessible to the League Secretary only. This can be changed as the League Executive wishes. Game information is hand-recorded on copies of the preprinted game sheets by the scorekeepers and then added to an online database using the following menu-driven process. A GUIDE TO THE LOOSE ENDS HOCKEY LEAGUE WEBSITE PAGE 23
A GUIDE TO THE LOOSE ENDS HOCKEY LEAGUE WEBSITE PAGE 24 RECORDING GAME RESULTS STEP ONE: PICK A GAME TO RECORD After selecting the RECORD GAME RESULTS option from the Main Menu, the Select Gamesheet screen appears. This is a listing of the 111 scheduled games. The top of the screen is shown below: Where a game result has been recorded in the database, the team scores appear in the -H- (Home) and -V- (Visitor) columns beside the team names. Game results that have already been saved may be edited using this menu system. Clicking on the GO TO NEXT GAME label near the top will jump to the first game for which no game result has been recorded in the database: In this instance, the first game visible on the screen would be Game 65 on 18 Jan :00 between the Hawks and Leafs. In theory there is no reason why the games need be recorded in the sequence in which they appear; however this theory has not been tested. To select the game sheet, click in the round box to the left of the game number and then scroll down to the bottom of the screen... Clicking on the grey GAME SHEET BOX in the bottom middle menu will begin the recording of the team rosters. A GUIDE TO THE LOOSE ENDS HOCKEY LEAGUE WEBSITE PAGE 24
A GUIDE TO THE LOOSE ENDS HOCKEY LEAGUE WEBSITE PAGE 25 RECORDING GAME RESULTS STEP TWO: RECORDING THE TEAM ROSTERS When a results for a game are being recorded for the first time, the screen that appears shows same listing of team members that is to be found on the preprinted game sheets for the two teams: The process of recording the team rosters for a game requires the following: A) Indicate who the goalie was. B) Remove from the list for that game any team members who were not present for that game. C) Add to the list for that game any non-team members who played for the team in that game. D) Update the list so that the sweater numbers reflect the sweater numbers worn by participants in that game. A GUIDE TO THE LOOSE ENDS HOCKEY LEAGUE WEBSITE PAGE 25
A GUIDE TO THE LOOSE ENDS HOCKEY LEAGUE WEBSITE PAGE 26 RECORDING GAME RESULTS STEP TWO: RECORDING THE TEAM ROSTERS (continued) A) To indicate who the goalie was, place a checkmark beside the goalie s name in the column immediately to the right of the player s name... B) To show that a player was not present for a game, remove the checkmark under the label Include two columns to the left of the player s name... When the grey UPDATE ROSTERS button near the bottom of the screen is pressed, the lineup gets updated with players who were not present removed from the listing. The goalies names are moved so that they are shown at the bottom of the team listings as is shown on the following page. A GUIDE TO THE LOOSE ENDS HOCKEY LEAGUE WEBSITE PAGE 26
A GUIDE TO THE LOOSE ENDS HOCKEY LEAGUE WEBSITE PAGE 27 RECORDING GAME RESULTS STEP TWO: RECORDING THE TEAM ROSTERS (continued) If a team member has been mistakenly recorded as not being present for a game, they can be added back on to the game lineup list by clicking on the grey button to the right of the label Player to add from team roster at the bottom of their team s listing, highlighting the missing team member s name and then clicking on the grey UPDATE ROSTERS BUTTON near the bottom of the screen... A GUIDE TO THE LOOSE ENDS HOCKEY LEAGUE WEBSITE PAGE 27
A GUIDE TO THE LOOSE ENDS HOCKEY LEAGUE WEBSITE PAGE 28 RECORDING GAME RESULTS STEP TWO: RECORDING THE TEAM ROSTERS (continued) C) To add to the list for that game a non-team member who played for the team in that game. click on the grey button to the right of the label Non-Roster Player to be added at the bottom of the team s listing and highlight the name of the player before clicking on the grey UPDATE ROSTERS BUTTON near the bottom of the screen... The scrollable list that shows up under the Non-Roster Player to be added is made up of all the players who are members of other teams plus all players who are on the Waiting List plus all players who are in the All Other Players (or Inactive Players) category. This scrollable list is sorted by last name, so it can take a while to scroll down to highlight the name Zenon Zakrowski. A GUIDE TO THE LOOSE ENDS HOCKEY LEAGUE WEBSITE PAGE 28
A GUIDE TO THE LOOSE ENDS HOCKEY LEAGUE WEBSITE PAGE 29 RECORDING GAME RESULTS STEP TWO: RECORDING THE TEAM ROSTERS (continued) D) Non-team members added to the lineup for a game need also to be assigned a sweater number. This is done by clicking in the circle immediately to the left of the player s name under the column heading No. and before clicking on the grey UPDATE ROSTERS BUTTON near the bottom of the screen... Type in the new sweater number for the player before pressing the grey UPDATE ROSTERS BUTTON near the bottom of the screen... In the same way, this list should be updated so that the sweater numbers reflect the sweater numbers worn by participants in that game in cases, for example, where a player is wearing a sweater number other than the one which appears on his team s preprinted game sheet. You can only edit one member of each team s lineup s number at a time. After the teams lineups have been accurately recorded, press the grey GAME SHEET BUTTON below the UPDATE ROSTERS BUTTON near the bottom of the screen... A GUIDE TO THE LOOSE ENDS HOCKEY LEAGUE WEBSITE PAGE 29
A GUIDE TO THE LOOSE ENDS HOCKEY LEAGUE WEBSITE PAGE 30 RECORDING GAME RESULTS STEP THREE: RECORDING THE GAME EVENTS Two pre-printed Game Sheets are updated by hand for each game, one for each team. These sheets have three sections. The top shows the team lineups listing the sweater number worn by each player, the player names, and indicating who the team s goalie was. The bottom two sections show the game events for that team. Game events are goals and penalties. On the pre-printed Game Sheets, the bottom left is a listing of goals scored by the team and the bottom right is a listing of penalties awarded to members of the team. In adding game events to the online Game Sheet, players are identified by the sweater numbers recorded in Step Two, Recording The Team Rosters (see previous pages). The online game sheet shows the two teams listed side-by-side in three sections. The top section is the team lineups for that game, the middle section lists the goals scored by members of the two teams, and the bottom section shows the list of penalties awarded to members of the teams. Only one game event can be added to the online game sheet at a time. To add each game event after entering the details as described later, the grey UPDATE GAME SHEET button must be pressed. There are two UPDATE GAME SHEET buttons on the screen. One is below the Goals Listings and one is below the Penalties listings: Each time a game event has been added to the online game sheet by pressing a grey UPDATE button, the online game sheet screen is updated and the totals beside each player s name in the top listing show new totals. Goal and assist totals are not currently shown for the goaltenders. All that shows up in the two goalies rows are the number of goals scored by the other team. To speed the process, near the top of the online game sheet there is a navigation section designed to reduce the amount of scrolling required. Pressing the A GOAL label takes you to the top of the middle section (listing the goals scored), pressing the A PENALTY label takes you to the top of the bottom section (listing the penalties awarded) and pressing the GO TO THE SAVE GAME SHEET BUTTON takes you to the bottom of the online game sheet. UNTIL THE GREY SAVE CHANGES SAVE GAME SHEET BUTTON HAS BEEN PRESSED, NO ONLINE GAME SHEET INFORMATION IS STORED IN THE LEAGUE DATABASE. A GUIDE TO THE LOOSE ENDS HOCKEY LEAGUE WEBSITE PAGE 30
A GUIDE TO THE LOOSE ENDS HOCKEY LEAGUE WEBSITE PAGE 31 RECORDING GAME RESULTS STEP THREE: RECORDING THE GAME EVENTS (continued) To record a game event, the round button beside the label new in the left-most column underneath the team s name should be selected. For example, to begin recording a goal for the home team: only one of the four new buttons on the online game sheet screen can be selected at any given time. After selecting one of these four, one of the two grey UPDATE GAME SHEET buttons must be pressed in order to begin recording the event details. Recording game event details is done by selecting a series of four to five numbers in the appropriate columns: The period the event occurred in, the goal scorer, one or two assisting players (if any), and the time left in the period are all assigned by clicking on the grey triangle in each column, scolling to highlight the appropriate number, and then releasing the mouse button... The next one of the new buttons can be selected in preparation for adding another goal or penalty before pressing one of the two UPDATE GAME SHEET buttons adds the event to the game record A GUIDE TO THE LOOSE ENDS HOCKEY LEAGUE WEBSITE PAGE 31
A GUIDE TO THE LOOSE ENDS HOCKEY LEAGUE WEBSITE PAGE 32 RECORDING GAME RESULTS STEP THREE: RECORDING THE GAME EVENTS (continued) As the UPDATE GAME SHEET buttons are pressed, the totals listed beside each player s name are incremented appropriately prior to adding the next game event. As noted previously, goal and assist totals are not currently shown for the goaltenders. All that shows up in the two goalies rows are the number of goals scored by the other team. As shown below, instead of selecting one of the four new buttons one may select the round button beside any of the game events that has already been recorded in order to correct the information stored. A GUIDE TO THE LOOSE ENDS HOCKEY LEAGUE WEBSITE PAGE 32
A GUIDE TO THE LOOSE ENDS HOCKEY LEAGUE WEBSITE PAGE 33 RECORDING GAME RESULTS STEP THREE: RECORDING THE GAME EVENTS (continued) Recording penalties awarded is the same as recording goals scored with slightly different data elements as the type of penalty and the number of minutes to be served must be specified in addition to the Period, Player and Time Left: When all game events have been recorded, the grey SAVE CHANGES SAVE GAME SHEET button at the bottom of the screen should be selected. When pressed, a message will appear advising that the game sheet has been added to league records. Pressing the grey GAME SHEET button at this point will allow you to select another game to add to the league records. A GUIDE TO THE LOOSE ENDS HOCKEY LEAGUE WEBSITE PAGE 33
A GUIDE TO THE LOOSE ENDS HOCKEY LEAGUE WEBSITE PAGE 34 UPDATING STATISTICS AND THE PUBLICLY AVAILABLE WEB PAGE After adding game results to the league database, the statistics for the current season should be updated prior to posting a new web page. One of three options should be selected... After the grey UPDATE SELECTED STATISTICS button has been pressed, the appropriate message appears... To update the web page visible to the public at the URL, the BUILD WEB PAGE option should be selected from the Main Menu. A new version of the Main Web page will then appear. Scroll to the very bottom and press the grey SAVE THIS PAGE FOR UPLOAD button at the bottom right. Once this is done, the updated page on screen is now available for all to access on the world wide web. A GUIDE TO THE LOOSE ENDS HOCKEY LEAGUE WEBSITE PAGE 34
