The fourth-ranked Navy lacrosse team battles intrastate rival and 12th-ranked Johns Hopkins Saturday on Senior Day in the regular-season home finale for 10 Navy seniors. The Mids are aiming at breaking a 31-game losing streak to the Blue Jays, the longest such streak in the country. Navy will also be attempting to break the NCAA single-game attendance record of 19,850, and have several promotions lined up for the contest. Face-off is slated for 12:00 p.m. (ET) and will be aired nationally on television on CSTV. The game will also be available via radio on WNAV (1430 AM) and as well as on SIRIUS Radio. Pete Medhurst will call all the action. A LOOK BACK... Navy surged out to a 4-0 lead, then hold off a strong Army charge in the second half to claim its 10th straight victory over Army last Saturday, The Mids received four goals from Billy Looney while sophomore Nick Mirabito netted his seventh career hat trick to lead Navy to the victory. Navy led 5-2 at halftime, but Army stormed back in the second half, scoring six goals in the third stanza and tying the contest at 9-9 early in the fourth quarter. However, Navy scored the next two goals of the game and held off three Army shots in the last 30 seconds to secure the victory. Matt Russell was the story of the game, stopping 11 shots, including several from point-blank range. The Mids also dominated the face-off X, winning 17-of-24 draws. Navy was outshot by the Black Knights, 40-35, but did win the ground ball battle, The Mids were 14-of-18 on clears, while Army was 13-of-16. UPON CLOSER REVIEW... The win over Army was Navy s 10th straight over the Black Knights, marking the first time a win streak in the storied rivalry has reached double figures. Navy won for the first time since March 27, 2004, when allowing a team to score at least 10 goals in a game. Ironically, the last time Navy won when allowing 10 or more goals came in an victory over Army. Navy is just under Richie Meade when allowing double-digit goals. Navy has won two straight one-goal games for the first time since the 2004 NCAA Tournament. Army became the first team since Bucknell (3/12/05) to record at least 40 shots in a game. Navy s starting midfield outscored the starting attack for the first time this season. The victory, coupled with the Navy women s outdoor track and field team s win over the Black Knights on Friday, enabled Navy to win the Star competition between the two schools for the 10th straight season. The last time Army won the Star series came in the season. NAVY S PROBABLE LINEUP... Attack Yr. Ht. / Wt. G-A-P Other Notes HISTORY HAPPENS... Billy Looney and Matt Russell earned Patriot League weekly citations after leading Navy past Army, With a win today, Navy s senior class will become the winningest class in school history. This year s class owns a mark, equaling the win totals of the classes of 1978 and Navy needs just one more win to record 10 wins in three straight years for the third time ever ( and ). Johns Hopkins leads the all-time series between the two teams, , including winning the last 31 games between the two teams, the longest streak in the country. Navy s last win came in the 1974 season, a triumph. The last four games in Annapolis have resulted in one-goal losses for the Mids, with two of the setbacks coming in overtime (10-9 (ot) in 2004; 9-8 in 2002; 7-6 (ot) in 2000; and in 1998). The 2004 game was played in front of 18,694 fans, while the 2002 game was witnessed by 15,271 patrons. Since its last win in 1974, Navy has lost 10 of the 31 games by two or fewer goals. The last two games have been determined in overtime with the Blue Jays winning last year s thriller, 9-8, in Baltimore. Today s game marks the first time since 1990 that Navy will enter the contest ranked higher than Johns Hopkins. In 1990, Navy was ranked 10th in the country, JHU was ranked 11th. The Blue Jays, however, won that game, 6-4. It will also mark the first time since the 2002 game that JHU won t be ranked No. 1 in the country entering this contest. It s the first time since the 1990 season that the Blue Jays won t be ranked in the top eight nationally at the time of the contest. Since Navy s last win in 1974, at the time of the Navy game, Johns Hopkins has been ranked outside of the top five nationally just six times. Along with its NCAA-record 42-game losing streak to Notre Dame in football, two Navy sports teams are currently mired in the longest losing streaks against one opponent in the country. Johns Hopkins enters the game with a 5-4 record after dropping an 11-4 decision to Maryland last Saturday night in front of 9,778 fans at JHU s Homewood Field. The loss snapped a modest season-long two-game winning streak for the defending national champions. The Blue Jays, which have played just two games on the road losing both, have played seven of their nine games against teams ranked in the top 18. Their road losses have come to the teams currently ranked No. 1 (Virginia, 12-6) and No. 2 (Hofstra, 11-6) in the country. Johns Hopkins has been hurt by inconsistent play after graduating one of its most successful group of seniors in school history. As a team, the Blue Jays are outscoring and outshooting their foes, 9.56 to 8.33 goals per game and 35.6 to 31.1 shots per game. The Blue Jays have also won over 60.0 percent of their face-offs and have converted on over 40.0 percent of their extra-man opportunities. JHU has struggled in man-down situations, allowing foes to convert on 40.7 percent of their chances. Individually, three players have scored at least 20 points this year, led by Kevin Huntley s 27 points (21 g, 6 a). Paul Rabil and Jake Byrne have added 20 points each. In goal, Jesse Schwartzman has played the majority of time, posting a.561 save percentage and an 8.32 GAA. Senior Greg Peyser ranks fifth in the country in face-off win percentage, winning 63.4 percent of his draws. REMEMBERING SOUPY... The Navy lacrosse team will be wearing a sticker on its helmets for the remainder of the year, in rememberance of Jim Campbell ( 64). Campbell died of cancer on March 8. Campbell was a two-sport athlete at Navy, playing football and lacrosse and also excelled in the fleet. He was recognized with the Navy Cross, one of the highest military honors, just short of a Medal of Honor. The sticker will look like the top of a Campbell s soup can, with the word Soupy below it.

3 DOMINANT STRETCH... Navy is currently in the midst of one of its most dominant three-year runs in school history. Since the start of the 2004 season, Navy owns a 36-9 record. Just three teams have reached double digits on Navy s home field during that span, and the Mids have held nine of the 22 opponents to five or fewer goals. The Mids had owned the nation s third-longest home winning streak prior to the game to Georgetown, winning nine games in a row. However, the Hoyas ended Navy s longest home winning streak since the seasons (10 games). The Mids may be even better on the road since the 2004 season, owning a 13-3 record, defeating 10 ranked teams in the process. Ironically, two of Navy s three road losses have come to unranked Patriot League opponents. Since the start of the 2004 season, Navy owns a 6-3 record against teams ranked higher than the Mids in the USILA Coaches Poll. In the last two seasons, the Midshipmen have produced the top-two win totals in school history. Navy won 15 games in 2004 en route to its NCAA Championship game appearance, and last year the Mids produced 12 wins in earning their second-consecutive NCAA Tournament berth. With just one more win, this year s senior class will become the winningest Navy class in school history. Since the beginning of the 2003 season, Navy owns a record (.724 winning percentage). Navy may have had its most dominant weekend defensively in a long time in the two-game sweep of Lehigh and Holy Cross. Navy allowed just seven goals and 30 shots in the two-game sweep. Lehigh managed just 12 shots, the fewest since allowing 12 in the 2004 season opener against Lafayette. In the first half of both games combined, Navy allowed just eight shots total and one goal. In three of the four quarters against Lehigh, the Navy defense held the Mountain Hawks to two or fewer shots. Holy Cross had four or fewer shots in three of the four quarters. The 32 goals allowed in eight games are the fewest since the 1964 team allowed 28 goals in the first eight games. In the 68 years that Navy has played at least eight games in a season, the Mids have allowed 32 or fewer goals in the first eight games just seven times (2006, 1964, 1954, 1945, 1928 and 1920). Navy has limited 18 of its last 45 opponents to five or fewer goals, and only five foes (Ohio State 2004, Army 2004, Syracuse 2004, Georgetown 2005 and Virginia 2005) have managed to reach double figures. Since 2004, Navy has held 23 of its 45 opponents to 25 or fewer shots. During that time frame, Navy is 21-2 (Ohio State 2004, Colgate 2006) when holding its foes to under 25 shots. Navy has lost just four games when holding foes to nine or fewer goals since 2004, posting a 32-4 mark. Two of the losses came in overtime during the 2005 campaign (Bucknell and Johns Hopkins), and the losses this year to Colgate and Georgetown. Since the start of the 2004 season, Navy has held its foes under their scoring average in 39 of a possible 43 games entering that contest. Ohio State and Syracuse in 2004, Georgetown in 2005 and Army last weekend have reached their averages. Just one team, Army, has reached its pre-game scoring average in The Black Knights are also the first team to reach double-digit goals this year. Navy is tops in the country in scoring defense (5.18), first in shots allowed per game (24.5) and senior goalie Matt Russell is 11th in save percentage (.592). Russell s 5.11 GAA is also tops in the country. UNLUCKY LOONEY... Navy s all-everything midfielder Steve Looney will miss 2-4 weeks after suffering broken collarbone in the first quarter against Army. Looney missed last year s NCAA Tournament after suffering a broken ankle in practice leading up to the NCAA Tournament. Looney could return in time for the NCAA Tournament. He has nine points and 43 ground balls this season. He needs just 10 more grounders to become the all-time ground ball leader at Navy. TRIUMPHANT RETURN... Junior Ian Dingman has made his presence felt in Navy s first 11 games of the season, ranking second on the team in points with 33. Dingman had scored at least three points in every game this year, except the Colgate, Georgetown and Army games. He scored four points in three straight games (Saint Joseph s to North Carolina) marking the first time he had scored four points in three straight games. Dingman had a strong game against Maryland, netting his 14th career hat trick (in just 42 career games) with three goals, including two man-up tallies. His goal with just eight seconds left against the Terps gave Navy a much-needed 7-6 victory. After being shut out against Colgate (which snapped a 26-game scoring streak), Dingman responded with his fifth and sixth four-point games of the year against Lehigh and Holy Cross. He tallied three goals and an assist in both contests. He netted two goals in the fourth quarter, a man-up and man-down tally each, against Georgetown. Dingman returns following a year off after scoring 62 points as a sophomore and garnering Second-Team All-America honors while helping Navy to the 2004 national title game. His 62 points in 2004 were the sixth most in school history and the second most by a Navy sophomore in school history, behind only Brendan Schneck s 78 points in He is one of four players in school history to score 100 points in his first two seasons at the Academy, joining Mike Herger ( ; 109 points), Jimmy Lewis ( ; 110 points) and Brendan Schneck ( ; 121 points). With a goal against Army, he has moved into the Navy career goals top 10 list with 84 career netters, ranking tied for ninth. He also ranks 13th on the career assist list with 51 and 11th on the career points list with 135.

5 NO SOPHOMORE SLUMP... Nick Mirabito was one of the nation s top-scoring freshmen last year. Now a year older, he is looking for the same type of sophomore season he enjoyed a year ago. The sophomore attack tied for the team lead with four points in the season-opening win over Saint Joseph s. He connected on his fifthcareer hat trick and the four points were a career best. He equaled a career high with four points (2 g, 2 a) in the victory over Lafayette. The two assists were a career high. Had a huge game against Army, netting his seventh career hat trick, helping Navy to an win over the Black Knights. He has scored at least two points in all but three games (Colgate, Lehigh and Maryland) this year. Broke out of a mini-slump with a hat trick against Holy Cross. The hat trick was the second of the season and sixth of his career. He has scored in all 27 career games and has netted at least two points in 18 of them. ON THE ATTACK... Navy s starting attack, Jon Birsner, Nick Mirabito and Ian Dingman, has had a strong start to the season and is a big reason that Navy is off to a 9-2 start. Combined, they have scored 54 goals and 42 assists for 96 points. The 96 points is almost 60 percent of Navy s scoring this year, the 54 goals are 51.9 percent of the goals and the 42 assists are 65.6 percent of all of Navy s assists. Ironically, one of Navy s top offensive games came in the win over Army when the Navy starting attack combined for just four points (3 g, 1 a), the second-fewest amount all season. Taylor Harris earned the start in place of Dingman. Dingman did come off the bench to score a goal. In the win over Maryland, the trio scored eight points (4 g, 4 a), highlighted by Birsner s four points and Dingman s hat trick. The threesome combined for 25 points (13 g, 12 a) in the two-game sweep of Lehigh and Holy Cross. They scored 11 points (6 g, 5 a) against Lehigh, then added a season-best 14 points (7 g, 7 a) against Holy Cross. The trio combined for 12 points (6 g, 6 a) in the season-opening win over Saint Joseph s. Against North Carolina, the trio tallied 11 points, including a combined nine from Birsner and Dingman to lead the Mids to their third victory of the year. Birsner, Dingman and Mirabito combined for 11 points in the victory over Lafayette. STARTING POSITION PRODUCTION... Opponent Attack Midfielders Saint Joseph s Ohio State North Carolina Bucknell Lafayette Colgate Lehigh Holy Cross Georgetown Maryland Army Johns Hopkins TOTALS BALANCING ACT... Last spring Navy was one of the most balanced teams in the country with six players tallying at least 20 points. The Mids were one-of-10 teams nationally with six players recording at least 20 points. Navy was also one-of-seven teams around the country with five players netting at least 17 goals. Navy, Delaware and Mount St. Mary s were the only schools last season to have five players score at least 17 goals, four players produce at least 30 points and six players record at least 20 points. Already this season, 16 players have scored goals and 21 players have scored points. For the entire 2005 season, 17 players scored goals and 19 players netted points. Three players scored their first career goals against Holy Cross and five players tallied their first career points against the Crusaders. MIDFIELD STEPS UP WHEN NEEDED... Navy s midfield unit had a strong game against Army, on a day when the Navy attack was bottled up. Billy Looney, Tommy Wallin and Terence Higgins combined for nine points (6 g, 3 a) to lead Navy to the victory. The entire midfield unit scored 10 points (7 g, 3 a) and scooped up 23 ground balls. Besides Billy Looney s four goals, Wallin s three points and Higgins two assists, William Wallace added a goal for the Mids, BILLY THE KID SPARKS NAVY... When brother Steve went down in the first quarter with a broken collarbone against Army, junior Billy Looney stepped up his game. The result was leading Navy to its 10th win in a row over Army. Looney scored four goals, with three coming in the second half, to lead Navy to the victory. Two of his goals stopped Army runs of 2-0 and 3-0 to halt the Black Knights momentum. He was named Patriot League Player of the Week for his efforts and is one of 23 semi-finalists for the Tewaaraton Award. YOUNG DEFENSEMEN GROW UP FAST... Navy s starting close defensemen, Jordan DiNola, Brendan Teague and Andrew Dow, entered the season with 12 career starts and just 48 career appearances between them, with Dow accounting for all 12 starts and 30 of the appearances. The three, however, have found the groove, allowing just 57 goals in the first 11 games. As a whole, the defense has allowed 269 shots and only 148 on goal. Just three teams (Georgetown, Maryland and Army) have recorded more than 30 shots for a game. The Mids have won the ground ball battle in nine of the 11 games so far this season, including a season-high 57 grounders against Holy Cross. COMING OUT IN DROVES... Not only has Navy had major success on the field, but also at the turnstiles. The Mids averaged 5,332 fans per game at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium in 2005, the most in the country. Navy was the only school in the Patriot League to average at least 1,000 fans per game last spring, and only one school in the league, Army, drew what Navy averages. Last April, the third-largest documented home crowd in school history (14,124) watched Navy defeat Maryland, 9-8. It was the largest crowd to watch a regular-season Division I lacrosse game last season. In the following home game, a crowd of 12,117 watched Navy beat arch rival Army, 12-9, in the Star Game. It was the fourth largest in school history and it marked the first time in school history that Navy drew over 10,000 fans in back-to-back games. Additionally, it was the largest documented crowd to see an Army-Navy lacrosse game. More than 2,000 fans braved bitterly cold wind chills in Navy s home opener on Feb. 24 against Ohio State, and over 1,000 fans turned out for a Wednesday afternoon battle against Lafayette. Against Georgetown, the Mids turned in a season-high crowd of 5,102. Navy is attempting to break the NCAA single-game attendance record during its game against Johns Hopkins. Two years ago, 18,694 fans turned out to see the top two teams, Navy and Johns Hopkins, in the country battle it out. BIG RUNS... He has saved at least 50 percent of the shots he has faced in 36-of-45 career games. When Russell stops at least 50 percent of his shots, Navy is 32-4, with the lone losses coming to Johns Hopkins (4/19/03 and 4/24/04), Bucknell (3/12/05) and Georgetown (4/1/06). Russell had an outstanding game against Maryland, limiting the Terps to just six goals, while making nine saves. Several of his saves came from point-blank range. He allowed just four even-strength goals and directed a Navy defense to one of its best outings of the season. Russell continued his remarkable senior season with 11 saves against Army. Despite allowing a season-high 10 goals, Russell was brilliant, saving several Army shots from point-blank range and thwarting several scoring attempts. Despite suffering the loss, Russell had a strong game against Georgetown, stopping 12 shots and picking up a season-high seven ground balls against the Hoyas. Russell made 10 saves, including spectacular back-to-back saves after OSU had crawled to within 6-3, against Ohio State. He allowed just three goals for a save percentage of.769, a new career high. Russell earned First-Team All-America honors as a sophomore and was the Kelly Award recipient as the nation s top goalie in He followed up that performance by garnering second-team recognition as a junior. He was named the preseason First-Team All-America goalie by Face-off Magazine and earned a spot on the Tewaaraton Award watch list for He earned the first Patriot League Defensive Player-of-the-Week honors in 2006 following his performance against Ohio State, and has won the honor a total of six times. Russell has crawled to 9th on the Navy career saves list and ranks 10th on the Navy career ground ball list with 148. JUST IN CASE... Colin Finnegan has played well when needed and has given the Mids a solid back-up to All-American Matt Russell. Finnegan, a junior, has played in five games so far, making 14 saves while allowing just four goals. He made a career-best seven saves, all coming in the fourth quarter, of Navy s 12-2 win over Saint Joseph s in the season opener. Navy appeared on national television six times in 2005 and in 2006, six regular-season contests will be aired, including five by CSTV. Home games against Georgetown (4/1) and Johns Hopkins (4/22) will be carried by CSTV, while the network also carried the Mids Patriot League battle against Bucknell in San Diego (3/11). ESPNU picked up the Army-Navy Star Game at West Point s Michie Stadium. The Maryland game was slated to be carried by CSTV on Friday, April 7, but lightning forced the postponement for one night. In turn, CSTV did not end up carrying the game Saturday night. Time-Warner Sports carried the Mids battle at Colgate on March 18, and CSTV then aired the game on a tape-delayed basis. Since the start of the 2004, Navy has been on television 16 times, posting a 9-7 record. Navy is 5-2 on CSTV all-time and 4-4 on the ESPN family of networks. The Mids are also 0-1 on Time-Warner sports. In games that Navy does not appear on television since the start of the 2004 season, the Mids are NAVY S TRIPLE-OPTION WEEKEND... The weekend of April is a must-see event for every single Navy athletics fan, as the Naval Academy hosts three major sporting events. Fans wishing to attend all three events can buy a Triple Option Weekend ticket package for just $10 per person at (click twice on the icon that says buy tickets online) or by calling US4-NAVY. Festivities will get underway on Friday, April 21 with the annual Blue- Gold Football Game, which will be played at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium at 7 p.m. Admission for the football game is $5 and there will be a $5 fee for parking. On Saturday, the Navy lacrosse team will play host to Johns Hopkins in a nationally- televised contest starting at 12 noon. Navy will attempt to set the NCAA single-game regular-season attendance record of 19,850. Two years ago, Navy drew 18,694 for the Hopkins game, which is the second-largest recorded regular-season lacrosse crowd in NCAA history. Tickets are $7 for adults and $3 for students. There will be a $5 parking fee.

7 On Sunday, the baseball team will be in the spotlight as Navy and Army will tangle in a doubleheader at Baltimore's Camden Yards. First pitch is 12 noon. Tickets are $7 for adults and $3 for children, and can be purchased online through by phone at US4-NAVY ( ) and through the Orioles by phone at BIRD ( ). LOONEY, RUSSELL GARNER LEAGUE RECOGNITION... After complementing one another on both ends of the field in Navy's victory over arch rival Army last Saturday at West Point, All-Americans Billy Looney and Matt Russell have been named the Patriot League Offensive and Defensive Players of the Week, respectively. It's the first time Looney has received league recognition this season, and it's the second-consecutive week Navy has been awarded the offensive player of the week. For Russell, Monday's honor marked the second time this season in which he has been named the Patriot League's Defensive Player of the Week. Navy's top-scoring midfielder with 19 points on 15 goals and four assists, Looney is coming off a career-high tying four goals against Army and led the Mids to their 10th-straight win over their rival. Three of Looney's four goals came in the second half, including a strike in the fourth quarter which put Mids up for good. A Preseason Third-Team All-American, Looney has scored a goal in seven of the 11 games this season, including five multi-goal performances. A Preseason First-Team All-American, Russell has been on target all season. He is coming off an 11- save effort against the Black Knights in which he made several impressive saves and led the Midshipmen to their ninth-straight N-Star. He stuffed a shot from point-blank range by Jon Burton on man-down defense late in the second quarter, and in the fourth quarter when Kevin LoRusso was on the doorstep, Russell robbed him of a goal. Russell is pacing the country in goals-against averaging, allowing just 5.11 goals per game, while stopping 59.2 percent of the shots he has faced. He is also currently on track to become the NCAA's all-time leader in goals-against average. He heads into the weekend owning a 6.28-career GAA, while the record holder is Johns Hopkins' Rob Scheer who posted a 7.73 GAA from LOONEY, RUSSELL AMONG FINAL 23 ON TEWAARATON AWARD LIST... Navy lacrosse standouts Billy Looney and Matt Russell are among the 23 players to make the initial cut for the 2006 Tewaaraton Trophy, awarded to the nation's top lacrosse player, after the list was narrowed from 53 to 23 finalists. The list will be cut to five finalists and the winner will be chosen on June 1. Looney, Navy's top-scoring midfielder with 19 points on 15 goals and four assists, is coming off a career-high tying four-goal performance in Navy's Star Game win over arch rival Army. A Preseason Third-Team All-American, Looney has scored a goal in seven of the 11 games this season, including five multi-goal performances. Russell, who was named a Preseason First-Team All-American, has lived up to that billing this season. He is pacing the country in goals-against averaging, allowing just 5.11 goals per game, while stopping 59.2 percent of the shots he has faced. Russell is on track to become the NCAA's all-time leader in goals-against average. Navy will once again play one of the toughest schedules in the nation. According to the preseason Face-Off Yearbook national poll, Navy will face seven of the top 25 teams in the country and two more that are receiving votes. Included in that tally are three of the top six and five of the top 15. Last season, nine of Navy s 16 games came against teams ranked in the top 25 at the time of the game, including seven teams ranked in the top nine. Seven of Navy s last eight games last year were against teams ranked in the top 16. Since the start of the 2004 season, Navy has played 25 of its 45 games against teams ranked in the top 25, posting a stellar 18-7 record. Two of the six losses have come to the No. 1-ranked team in the country at the time (Johns Hopkins twice). Other losses to ranked teams in that span were against No. 20 Ohio State (2004), No. 4 Syracuse (2004), No. 7 Georgetown (2005), No. 6 Virginia (2005) and No. 5 Georgetown (2006). In fact, in the new decade beginning in 2000, 55 of Navy s 97 games (.567) have been against ranked teams. In those games, Navy is (.545 winning percentage). Six of those losses have come to Johns Hopkins. In games against unranked foes since 2000, Navy is 35-5 (.875 winning percentage). The losses have come to UMBC (2001), Air Force and Penn State (2003), Bucknell (2005) and Colgate (2006). SOME PRESEASON PUBLICITY... Navy finds itself in familiar position entering the 2006 lacrosse season. The Mids are ranked seventh in both the Face-off Magazine Preseason Poll as well as the Lacrosse Magazine Poll. It marks the 24th consecutive poll Navy has been ranked and the 23rd consecutive poll Navy has been ranked in the top 10. Navy started last year fourth in the Face-off Magazine preseason poll, and were 14th in In addition to the high team ranking, several Mids were named on preseason All-America lists. Senior goalkeeper Matt Russell headlines this year s list of Preseason All-Americans. Russell, a Second-Team All-American last spring, was named to the preseason first team. The Looney brothers were named to the third team, while senior Jon Birsner and junior Ian Dingman were honorable mention selections. For the first time in nearly a quarter of a century, Navy had two players named First-Team All- Americans. Graham Gill and Mitch Hendler were named first-team members after leading the Mids to their second-straight Patriot League title and a second-consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance. The last time two Navy players were named to the first team was in 1981 when Syd Abernethy and Michael MacLaughlin garnered first-team kudos. Since the 1981 campaign, only seven players have earned First-Team All-America status. In addition to Gill and Hendler, Matt Russell (Second Team), Billy Looney (Third Team), Steve Looney (Third Team) and Jon Birsner (Honorable Mention) gained All-America kudos. Nine Mids earned All-Patriot League recognition last season. Graham Gill, Billy Looney, Chris Pieczonka, Mitch Hendler and Matt Russell earned spots on the first team, while Jon Birsner, Steve Looney, Clipper Lennon and Mike Felber were on the second team. Four of the seven players honored return to the field for the Mids this season. Eight players earned invites to the 2006 U.S. Men s Lacrosse Team tryouts. Jon Birsner, Ian Dingman, Graham Gill, Mitch Hendler, Billy Looney, Steve Looney, Chris Pieczonka and Matt Russell were all invited to the tryouts. BIRSNER, RUSSELL NAMED CO-CAPTAINS... All-Americans Jon Birsner and Matt Russell have been selected by their teammates to serve as cocaptains of the Navy lacrosse team this spring. An Honorable Mention All-American a year ago, Birsner is the point man in Navy's offensive scheme. Arguably one of the most underrated players in the country, Birsner paced the Mids in scoring last spring with 42 points on 11 goals and a team-best 31 assists. Along with Russell, Birsner was the recipient of the 2005 Lt. Robert T. Bianchi Award presented to Navy's most valuable player. One of Navy's most decorated players in the history of Navy lacrosse, Russell was named a Second- Team All-American, a First-Team All-Patriot League selection and the Patriot League Goalkeeper of the Year last season. The co-recipient of the Lt. Robert T. Bianchi Award, Russell owned the nation's second-best goals-against average (6.69), allowing 106 goals in nearly 952 minutes of play. He has led Navy to a 26-5 record when he is the goalkeeper of record. Birsner and Russell are the first Navy lacrosse co-captains since Tom Calabrese and Neil Duffy captained the 1984 squad, leading the Mids to a 6-6 record, a win over fourth-ranked Virginia and a No. 13 final ranking.
