The collection documents Cashman's life and activities in Nevada; among the materials compiled after his death are a biography of Cashman and a family history of his wife, Leah Barker. Biographical Note Nevada pioneer James "Big Jim" Cashman was born in 1884 in Jameson, Missouri. In 1904 Cashman joined the wave of young pioneer men coming to Las Vegas. He first worked as a waiter for the railroad "chow tent," but soon left to start his own businesses in Searchlight, Nevada. While in Searchlight Cashman established an auto garage and ferry company for those people crossing the Colorado River. When he returned to Las Vegas he established an automobile dealership and an airline company franchise that enabled Las Vegas to have airmail service. In 1923 James Cashman married Leah Barker, a Reno, Nevada native. Barker was a home extension agent and a traveling teacher for school children in rural areas. Together the couple had two children, Tona born in 1924 and James Jr. born in Cashman was a County Commissioner and encouraged the building new roads, including what is now the I15 interstate. He advocated for the building of Hoover Dam as a delegate to the League of the Southwest. - Page 3-

4 Cashman volunteered in many community organizations in Las Vegas. He was active in the Elks Lodge and in 1948 spearheaded the Lodge's efforts to build a stadium for rodeos and other sports activities. When completed the field was named the Elks Stadium and Cashman Field. Cashman opposed the unionization of the automotive workers in the early 1950s and supported the "right to work" law in Nevada. James Cashman Sr. died December 30, 1962 at the age of 77. Clark County commemorated Cashman's contributions to the region by naming a local middle school in his honor. In 2007 the Cashman Family was inducted into the Nevada Business Hall of Fame. In 2015, as part of a legacy finding aid conversion project, Hana Gutierrez created the collection description and brought it into compliance with current professional standards and entered the data into ArchivesSpace.
