4 St. Mary s County Recreation & Parks FY 2016 Youth Sports Participation and Facility Use SUMMARY Youth sports participation and facility use statistics are vital when addressing needs for park land acquisition, development, and facility usage. This information is necessary for both short and long term requirements. Included in the FY 2016 Youth Sports Participation and Facility Use Report are participation and facility use statistics for Recreation & Parks sponsored and volunteer youth sports leagues. Facility use needs and recommendations provided by Recreation & Parks staff are also included in the report. The Department sponsors a youth basketball league, which operates in various public schools, as well as indoor soccer, roller hockey, field hockey, and lacrosse leagues at the Leonard Hall Recreation Center. The Department also sponsors the Church Softball League at Chancellors Run Regional Park. These programs are funded through fees and charges and operate from the Departments Activity Fund Budget. Listed below are the leagues and the general areas of the county they operate in. Multiple seasons, camps, training sessions etc. now have them utilizing the field space throughout the year. Due to this increased playing time and the day of the week selection (M/F) for practices, we are experiencing field shortages and additional wear and tear on our fields.

8 BASEBALL AND SOFTBALL SUMMARY Number of Participants Number of Teams League Name St. Mary's Little League - Fall St. Mary's Little League - Spring Babe Ruth American Legion Middle School Boys Middle School Girls Independent/Travel SMYTBO Total GROWTH BABE RUTH This league has had a marked decrease in numbers in the previous years. Combining various travel teams to its roster boosted the numbers for FY16. ST. MARY S YOUTH T-BALL ORGANIZATION All fields are fully utilized with two or more teams on each. Fields are mostly private and public school fields. League needs more space mid-county. ST. MARYS LITTLE LEAGUE Formerly St. Mary s American and St. Mary s National Little Leagues, these two have now joined together as one league. Numbers remained steady with an increase in northern teams mainly due to the Northern Girls folding. AMERICAN LEGION BASEBALL Participated in the Junior Division and Senior Division as well as two High School Division teams in tournament play. NORTHERN GIRLS SLOWPITCH SOFTBALL League has folded TRAVEL AND INDEPENDENT TEAMS We have a substantial number of travel teams utilizing county field space and the number increases yearly. Additional 90ft fields will be needed. MIDDLE SCHOOL LEAGUES Babe Ruth began the middle school boys league in In 2015 they started a fall girls division which was taken over by the SOMD Ospreys for the 2016 season. Youth Total GROWTH Boys Lacrosse is able to hold all practices and games at Lancaster Park. Girls Lacrosse is spread through various practice areas in the county. Currently their younger age groups play on Saturdays at the CSM Leonardtown Campus. This location may soon become unavailable to them due to building expansion. We will need to work on a centralized location to hold their games when this location is lost. CHALLENGES/ISSUES Have park area but must be developed for usage. Lacrosse leagues are now having more off season events (clinics, travel teams etc.) which has lead to a lack of space as they are in competition with summer and fall leagues.

CHALLENGES/ISSUES The county s Land Preservation Park and Recreation Plan has identified the need for indoor facilities for roller hockey, basketball, volleyball etc.. The Nicolet Park master plan includes an outdoor Roller Hockey rink as a possible future facility. Practice Usage and Availbility Practice Site Leonard Hall Recreation Center Time Slots Available Monday 1 Wednesday 2 Friday 2 TOTAL 5 *Note: Teams practice from the middle of September through the first week of April. Practices are once a week for one hour. One time slot can accommodate two (2) teams and leagues have begun playing high school ice hockey at the new facility in Waldorf.
27 SOCCER
28 St. Mary's County Recreation & Parks Youth Sports Leagues Participation and Facility Use Summary SOCCER Number of Participants Number of Teams Practice Sites Available League Name St. Mary s Fall St. Marys Spring Total The two soccer leagues have officially joined together and are now know as St. Mary s Soccer. This has helped with distributing practice areas evenly throughout the county. In Spring FY16 they had to put a cap on registration due to lack of additional practice space. There is a need for additional prime field space in the mid-county and northern county area. Travel team participation has increased and the level of play has increased with it. Many of our current fields are not in the condition required for this level of play. Chancellors Run fields are currently the only prime soccer fields in the county.

An increase has been noted in the recent years due to growth of the county, loss of private fields and the inclusion of new sports. 42 St. Mary s County Recreation and Parks Recommendations BASEBALL: 1) Additional fields in the mid-county area are needed due to growth and loss of private field space. 2) Communication between leagues and maintenance division regarding field repairs needs to be streamlined. Having one point of contact for all of the leagues to contact would be beneficial. 3) Additional lit field space. 4) Additional 90ft field(s) a. Note: we are currently in the process to light Baggett Park 90ft. FOOTBALL: 1. Practice space is needed in all areas especially the mid county (Hollywood/Leonardtown area). 2. Field rotation to alleviate over use. SOCCER: 1. Additional premium game fields to accommodate the increased number of travel divisions. These divisions are at a higher skill level. 2. Additional practice space to lessen the use of game fields for practice. SPECIAL NOTE: Teams need to monitor player size, smaller teams do not mean more fields.
