1 THE GOLDEN BEAR HOCKEY ALUMNI 25 th ANNUAL PEE WEE INVITATIONAL HOCKEY TOURNAMENT DECEMBER 27, 28, CLARE DRAKE ARENA UNIVERSITY OF ALBERTA 116 STREET 89 AVENUE EDMONTON, ALBERTA
2 2013 Golden Bears Hockey Alumni Pee Wee Invitational Hockey Tournament December & 29 th 2013 The Golden Bears Hockey Alumni will be hosting their 25 th annual Pee Wee Invitational Tournament at Clare Drake Arena, in Edmonton, on December 27 th, 28 th and 29 th, The tremendous success and the response to our previous tournaments have already established this event as one of the premier Pee Wee tournaments in Western Canada. The primary objective of the tournament is to draw attention to the University of Alberta Golden Bear Hockey Program and the great facilities at the U of A. All funds raised through this event go directly to the Golden Bears Hockey Program. To date the Golden Bears Hockey Alumni has been very active in fund raising for the hockey program. We have established the Clare Drake Awards, a $150,000 Endowment Fund, which provides up to ten $1, scholarships per year to Golden Bear hockey players who achieve the required academic standing. Recently, we have added the Bill Moores Awards, three - $1500 scholarships available to first year players and the Golden Bears Hockey Alumni $100,000 Endowment Fund. Our long term goal is to raise well over $2,000,000 in endowments to provide tuition and book costs for every Golden Bear hockey player. The Alumni also provides a skate fund to the University which allows all players to purchase one pair of skates per year and, as well, we subsidize the team travel costs by providing one team meal per day while the team is on the road. Obviously, we are very proud of the 101 year Golden Bear Hockey tradition, the 13 National Championships, and the 50 Western Canadian Championships. It has always been our hope that some of the top Pee Wees competing in this tournament would become Golden Bears. This hope became reality in 1994 when three players from our very first tournament, Kent Simpson,Cam Sherban and Bobby Niedzielski became Golden Bears. Since then, other Pee Wee participants who have become Golden Bears have been: Darcy Smith, Doug Strobl, Sean Day, Mike Hurley, Perry Johnson, Tyler Shybunka, Steve Shrum, Cam Kuzyk, Landon Boyko, Scott Henkleman, Brent Robertson, Jeff Feniak, David Boychuk, Richard Hamula, Brant Middleton, Josh Morrow, B.J. Boxma, Doug Auchenberg, Dylan Stanley, Aaron Sorochan and Blake Grenier. Kurtis Mucha, Thomas Carr, Jordan Rowley, Rhett Rachinski and Jesse Craige. We Hope this year s tournament will feature 3 or 4 of Edmonton s top Pee Wee Major Teams and 3 or 4 teams from outside the city. Tournament rules, regulations and entry forms are in the enclosed package. Interested teams should send in their application form as early as possible to the address noted on the roster application. Teams are encouraged to order their Tournament souvenir T-shirts ahead of time, and order forms will be faxed to the team managers. Additional information can be obtained by contacting Stan Marple on or or at stan.marple@ualberta.ca
