4 SCOUTING THE DOLPHINS Jacksonville head coach John Galloway guided the Dolphins to a 3-11 record a year ago, including a 3-4 mark in SoCon action, in what was his first season as head coach. The Dolphins hit their stride at the end of the season, winning three (VMI, Mercer, Bellarmine) of their final five games. Jacksonville was picked to finish fourth in the 2018 SoCon Preseason Coaches Poll behind reigning SoCon Champion Air Force (47 points, 6 first-place votes), Richmond (43 points, 2 first-place votes), and Furman (37 points). Galloway will rely upon senior Preseason All-SoCon selections to lead the way for the Dolphins this spring. Ryan Beville finished third on the team with 36 ground balls and caused four turnovers a year ago. The shortstick midfielder also recorded a pair of goals and three assists. Beville picked up at least one ground ball in each of his 12 appearances in 2017, and posted a season-high five at Duke (March 13) and against Air Force in the SoCon Tournament semifinals (May 4). A Second Team All-SoCon selection a year ago, midfielder McLean Chicquen led the team in goals scored (23) and points (35). He finished the season tied for fourth in the league averaging 2.50 points per game and seventh with 1.64 goals per game. He recorded at least one point in 12 of the Dolphins 14 games, including a pair of six-point performances against Mercer and Bellarmine. NAVY VS. Kenary scored four goals and added an assist, while Donovan Lang added two goals and two assists as Jacksonville defeated Navy, 13-7, in the Moe s Southwest Grill Classic at EverBank Field in Jacksonville. Goalie Peter DeLuca was strong in the cage for the Dolphins with 17 saves. Navy dominated the game statistically as the Mids outshot the Dolphins 42-24, had 36 ground balls to Jacksonville s 18, won 15 of the 24 face-offs, committed just 12 turnovers while forcing 20 turnovers and converted all 15 clear attempts. Statistics, however, can be deceiving at times as only 24 of Navy s 42 shots were on goal and the majority of the shots that were on goal ended up being easy saves for DeLuca. The Mids were also 0-4 on extra-man opportunities. On the defensive end of the field, Navy goalkeepers RJ Wickham (30 minutes, 4 saves, 8 goals allowed) and Nolan Hickey (30 min, 2 svs, 5 GA) combined for just six saves while giving up 13 goals. The Navy defense was also hampered by the absence of long stick defensive midfielder Pat Kiernan, who was out with a broken hand. Navy trailed 10-4 late in the third quarter before scoring three quick goals, one at the end of the third quarter by junior middie Bryce Dabbs and two to start the fourth quarter by sophomores Tucker Hull and Pat Durkin, to cut the Jacksonville lead in half at The Mids had several opportunities to get closer, but poor shot selection doomed the comeback bid. Hull led the Mids with three goals, while Durkin scored twice. Second-year attackman Sam Jones and Dabbs each had a single tally. All seven of Navy s goals were unassisted. Midfielder Joe Lennon scored four goals for the Mids, including the last three. It marked the Mids first OT win in postseason action, as Navy previously lost NCAA Tournament decisions to Cortland State (2OT) in 1972 and Washington & Lee (3OT) in The Navy win also went down in the record books as the longest Patriot League Tournament contest. The Mids 8-7 loss against Cornell in 2008 marked the first time in program history that Navy had played an overtime game at a neutral site. SOWELL AMONG ELITE COMPANY Seventh-year Navy head coach Rick Sowell is just the third lacrosse coach overall in the sport s history and the only active coach to lead three different D-I programs to the NCAA Tournament. Sowell guided Dartmouth to the 2003 NCAA Tourney, Stony Brook to the 2010 NCAA Quarterfinals and Navy in Joining him on that list are Jack Emmer and Tony Seaman. Denver s Bill Tierney (RIT, Princeton, Denver), Cornell s Matt Kerwick (Alfred, Hobart, Cornell) and Stony Brook s Jim Nagle (SUNY Oneonta, Colgate, Stony Brook) have also led three teams to the NCAA Championship, however, not all three were D-I programs. Navy HEAD COACH RICK SOWELL On June 9, 2011, Naval Academy Director of Athletics Chet Gladchuk introduced Rick Sowell, a man who has been involved with rebuilding programs at Georgetown, Dartmouth, St. John s and Stony Brook, as the Naval Academy s eighth head men s lacrosse coach in its 100-plus year storied history. In his first season at Navy, Sowell directed the Mids to a 6-6 record, including a 3-3 mark in Patriot League action. It marked Navy s first.500-win season since Navy capped off its season with an 8-2 rout over No. 6 Johns Hopkins. The six-goal victory marked the Mids largest margin of victory in the series since 1965 when Navy scored a 15-6 win over the Blue Jays. Meanwhile, the Class of 2012 became the first class since 1974 to graduate having twice beaten Hopkins. In 2014, the Mids earned their first trip back to the conference postseason tournament since Sowell guided Navy to a share of the Patriot League regularseason title in 2015 and the No. 1 seed in the league tournament. He was named the 2015 Patriot League Coach of the Year. Sowell garnered Patriot League Coach of the Year honors for a second straight year in 2016, led the Mids to the league s regular-season crown and the program s first NCAA Tournament bid since Additionally, Navy s opening-round win over Yale was the program s first NCAA Tournament win since Sowell compiled a (.644) record in five seasons at Stony Brook and was named the America East Coach of the Year in each of the last two seasons as he guided the Seawolves to back-to-back America East regular-season titles ( ). In 2010, Sowell led Stony Brook to the program s first America East regular-season title, a school-record 13 wins, a No. 6 national ranking and a 9-7 victory over Denver in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. The Seawolves were just a game away from advancing to the school s first final four, losing in to Virginia in the quarterfinals, Stony Brook had four players earn All-America honors, including Kevin Crowley who was the school s first First-Team All-American and was named the USILA Player of the Year. Sowell, who was an assistant coach for the gold-medal winning Team USA at the 2010 World Championships in England, led Stony Brook to a 9-6 record in 2009 and a final ranking of No. 20. It marked the school s first end-of-theseason national ranking. Stony Brook finished 4-1 in America East and stood as the regular season co-champions. Prior to Stony Brook, Sowell was tapped to head the rebirth of the St. John s lacrosse program that had been dormant since Sowell had just one season to recruit before the Red Storm took the field in Sowell was the head coach at Dartmouth from and revived the Big Green program, taking the team from last place in the Ivy League to first. In his final season at Dartmouth in 2003, Sowell s squad posted an 11-3 record and won the Ivy League with a 5-1 record. It was Dartmouth s first Ivy League title since 1965 and just the third Ivy League title in school history. During the title run, the Big Green upset No. 2 Princeton marking the first time that Dartmouth had won at Princeton since Sowell was also named the NEILA Coach of the Year that season. Sowell s coaching career began at Washington College in Chestertown, Md., where he helped guide the Shoremen to the NCAA D-III national title game in 1986 and the semifinal round in Sowell was named the 1985 D-III National Midfielder of the Year and was also a two-time All-American. He helped lead Washington College to the D-III national championship game twice. His 45 goals and 14 assists earned him D-III First-Team All- America honors and an invitation to participate in the annual North-South All-Star Game. Sowell graduated from Washington College in 1986 with a bachelor s degree in history. 12
