2013/14 PeeWee Tier 1,2 and 3 EVALUATION & TEAM FORMATION PROCESS 09/13/2013 MJMHA 2013/14 PeeWee Tier 1,2 and 3 Evaluation & Team Formation Process PURPOSE To establish guidelines and procedures for player evaluations and selection of PeeWee Tier 1, 2 and 3 teams OVERVIEW 1. To complete a successful evaluation of the players the following personnel will be required: Tier/division coordinator To co-ordinate all on and off ice procedures for the evaluation process. Evaluators There will be four independent MJMHA board approved evaluators selected for the PeeWee Tier 1 and 2 try outs. The division coordinator will select evaluators for Tier 3 evaluations (3 recommended) Evaluation data entry personnel- There will be one board approved evaluation data entry person for the PeeWee Tier 1 and 2 tryouts. The division coordinator will be the data entry person for Tier 3 Registration personnel One or two people to handle registration and handing out jerseys at initial ice session and collecting jerseys after final scrimmage session. All Player notification prior to ice sessions will be posted on the MJMHA website. 2. A meeting with Tier coordinator or division director and all evaluation personnel may be held prior to the first ice session to delegate the appropriate duties. PLAYER ELIGIBILITY

1. Tryouts for Tier 1 and 2 are open to all PeeWee aged hockey players (male and female) that are, registered with MJMHA and paid the appropriate tryout fee. 2. Evaluations for Tier 3 are part of the player registration fee. 3. Upon registration, a player will have the ability to register to try out for Tier 1 & 2. It is the understanding that registering for Tier does not guarantee a placement on a Tier team. Any player not successful in being placed on a tier 1 or 2 roster will be designated for tier 3 tryouts. Players not choosing to tryout for tier 1 or 2 will be placed on a tier 3 evaluation list. 4. Players trying out for Tier 1 or 2 must communicate their absence from any evaluation session to the Tier Coordinator. Failure to communicate their absence may make that player ineligible for the team selection. Players evaluating for tier 3 must communicate their absence to the Division Coordinator. 5. Injured players may be asked to supply a safe return to play medical report to the Tier/division Coordinator. 6. Once Tier 1 and 2 tryouts have started, late registrations may be accepted, no refunds will be given. 7. Once Tier 3 evaluations have started players will be accepted upon approval of the registrar. Late fees will apply. EVALUATION CRITERIA During the course of the evaluations, the evaluators will be evaluating and grading the players on criteria that include the following: Skating: Acceleration, speed, mobility, agility, balance, stride, crossovers, pivots, acceleration out of turns, quick feet, controlled skating, change of pace. Puck Control/Passing: giving/receiving pass, passing choices, unselfish with the puck, presents a good target, head ups, good hands, puck protection. Shooting: Power, accuracy, quick release, can shoot in motion, variety of shots. Compete Level: can the player follow instruction, overall attitude towards game, overall desire to compete, does the player shy away from other players? Hockey sense: Ability to see the play developing both offensively and defensively and moves to support, judgment, anticipation, disciplined. Goalies will be evaluated on the following skills: Balance-Retains ready position after blocking shots -Holds ready position in movement Mobility-Skating ability -Moves with speed & in control in ready position -Reacts well to puck movement in zone Quickness-Reacts well to quick shots -Effective in close Concentration/Consistency -Alert at all times -Follows puck at all times Page 1

-Able to make key saves Tier 1 and 2 Evaluation process 1. There will be 1 skill session, 3 scrimmage sessions, 1 Goalie skill session and a Black and White game for evaluations in PeeWee. 2. For all sessions, the players will be divided into equal groups based on numbers. 3. All players will be given a jersey/bib that they will use for the evaluations. At the conclusion of the final scrimmage session, the players will return the jersey to the registration person. 4. Players will be evaluated for their primary position as indicated on Tier tryout form. 5. All evaluators will be given a list of player numbers for the ice session. Each evaluator will give all players an overall grade in each category between 1 and 10. At the conclusion of every second ice session, the evaluators will hand in their completed forms from both sessions to the data entry person. 6. The data entry person will enter the evaluation scores after every second session into the Rate Right computer program, The Rate Right program can then generate an overall score/ranking for each player. 7. The Tier 1 and Tier 2 coaches will conduct their own personal evaluations separate from the Rate Right program. 8. Coaches will be able to view Rate Right rankings after every second ice session. 9. Player rankings/scores are to be kept confidential within MJMHA at all times and are not available for review. Failure to keep scores confidential will result in disciplinary action by MJMHA. 10. After the completion of the first 4 evaluation sessions a Black and White game will be played by the top ranking players as determined by the Rate Right program. The format of the Black and White game will be determined by the registration numbers for PeeWee tryouts. If registration numbers support, the format will be 3 teams of players. The three teams will play one game with each team playing two periods of hockey. If tryout numbers do not support this style of game a traditional two team format will be used. NOTE: Any parent interfering in the evaluation process may be subject to disciplinary action. Tier 1 and 2 Team Selection process OVERVIEW 1. After the completion of the Black and White game the Tier 1 coach will present his/her team selection to a committee consisting of the Tier Coordinator, Tier 2 coach and the independent evaluators. 2. If the coach s team selection is *supported by the evaluation scores the team roster will be announced within 12 hours of the Black and White game. Page 2

3. If the coach s team selection is not *supported by the evaluation scores the committee will bring the case to the MJMHA executive for review and the team will be announced within 24 hours of the Black and White game. 4. The Coach may select players for the team based on their secondary position as per try out registration form, as long as it is *supported by the evaluation scores. 5. The coach may select an injured player as long as the player can return before Dec 1 st of the upcoming hockey season. The player selection needs to be approved by the MJMHA executive and will be based on the player s recent history within MJMHA. 6. Once the Tier 1 team has been selected the Tier 2 coach will select his/her team using the same protocol as in steps 1 through 5, in front of a committee consisting of the Tier Coordinator, Tier 1 coach and the independent evaluators. 7. In the case that no Tier 2 coach has been selected in advance, the committee as above will select the Tier 2 team using the evaluation scores of the remaining players. 8. As per MJMH policy the PeeWee teams must be formed as follows: PeeWee Tier I & II- a minimum of 9 forwards, 6 defence, and 2 goaltenders NOTE: *Supported means that the team has been selected WITHIN REASON of the evaluation scores. In the bottom third of a lineup a coach may use his discretion to fill his/her roster. Evaluation scores are in place to protect MJMHA players from any GROSS injustices in team selection. Any player selections that appear to be a GROSS injustice will be brought forward to the MJMHA executive by the committee for a final ruling. Committee guidelines used to approve coach s selections Tier 1 Are forewards ranked 1-6 named to Tier 1 Coach selection for final 3forewards within reason Are defencemen ranked 1-4 named to Tier 1 Coach selection for final 2 defencemen within reason Goaltender ranked 1 named to team Coach selection for final goaltender spot within reason Tier 2 *Based on the tier selections for the Tier 1 roster, remaining players and goaltenders will be re-ranked 1-n using the same evaluations Are forewards ranked 1-6 named to Tier 2 Coach selection for final 3 forewards within reason Are defencemen ranked 1-4 named to Tier 2 Coach selection for final 2 defencemen within reason Goaltender ranked 1 named to Tier 2 Coach selection for final goaltender spot within reason Page 3

Once Coaches have indicated that they have completed the selection process and all agree that the roster is fair, the rosters will be deemed to be FINAL. This will only occur at the selection table. Furthermore, any discussion that takes place at the selection table is done so in the strictest of confidence. Anyone that partakes in the selection process shall not under any circumstances communicate to any player including goalies or the parent of any player, any information related to selection process. Tier 3 - Evaluation Process The Tier 3 evaluations will be for all players not placed on a Tier 1 or 2 team and the players that choose to go directly to Tier 3. The evaluation process will consist of the following: 1 skills session and 3 controlled scrimmage sessions For all sessions, the players will be divided into equal groups based on numbers. All players will be given a jersey/bib that they will use the entire evaluations. At the conclusion of the scrimmage session, the players will return the jersey/bib to the registration person. All evaluators will be given a list of player numbers for the ice session. Each evaluator will give all players one overall grade between 1-10 for each category. At the conclusion of each ice session, the evaluators will hand in their completed forms to the division coordinator. The division coordinator will enter all the grades for all the players into the Rate Right program At the conclusion of the scrimmages, the players will be ranked from 1 to n based on their total score in the Rate Right program.. Tier 3 Team formation Each player will be assigned a final ranking of 1 to n. Players will automatically be placed on a team based on a snake type draft. Example: Team 1 Team 2 Team 3 Team 4 Ranked 1 Ranked 2 Ranked 3 Ranke 4 Ranked 8 Ranked 7 Ranked 6 Ranked 5 Ranked 9 Ranked 10 Ranked 11 Ranked 12 Ranked 16 Ranked 15 Ranked 14 Ranked 13 Goaltenders will be placed starting with top goalie on team 4 and working back. Coaches in attendance and coordinators will review the team lists as posted and make any adjustments necessary based on position, possible suspicion of evaluation error, players missing ice times and unevaluated players. Page 4

Coaches will then draw a number to select which team they will have Trades can be made for their own child and one(1) assistant coach. No trades for additional assistant coaches, trainers and or managers. Coordinators may need to make some adjustments based on special requests or other reasons of a private nature. Once all Head Coaches have indicated that they have completed the drafting process and the agree that all the roster are fair and even the rosters will be deemed to be FINAL. This will only occur at the drafting table. Furthermore, any discussion that takes place at the drafting table is done so in the strictest of confidence. Anyone that partakes in the drafting process shall not under any circumstances communicate to any player including goalies or the parent of any player, any information related to trades, final ranking, score and grouping of any player and/or goalie.
