1 ANNUAL R VIEW OF GLOBAL SPORTS $ALARIES 2010 AVERAGE FIRST-TEAM PAY, TEAM-BY-TEAM, IN THE WORLD S MOST POPULAR SPORTS LEAGUES

2 Introduction Welcome to Sporting Intelligence's first Annual Review of Global Sports Salaries, which compares earnings in the world's richest sports leagues on a like-for-like basis for the first time, by players' average pay per week and per year. The figures considered are "on field" earnings only, not endorsements. The report includes wage and performance data from the world's richest leagues in football (the English Premier League), in gridiron (the NFL), in basketball (the NBA), in baseball (MLB), in cricket (the IPL) and in ice hockey (the NHL). These are also the world's six richest leagues in terms of average pay per player per week, although not in that order. This review also includes Japan's NPB baseball league as the highest-paying sports league in Asia (and the highest paying overall in Asia aside from the newcomer IPL, played over six weeks but included for its high weekly pay), as well as Italy's Serie A, the world's second-highest paying football league. We include a pair of Spanish teams, Real Madrid and Barcelona, as the only two teams from outside our "core" six richest leagues that do or would make the top 30 payers by average pay. Football leagues from the USA (MLS) and Scotland (SPL) are included as representatives of "small" leagues from the world's most popular game. Details about our methodology can be found at All figures were extracted from official club accounts, or sourced from unions and other reliable administrative bodies, directly or indirectly. The uniqueness of this study lies in looking beyond total payrolls or club wage bills to what the players make per head. the 2009 season in MLB, the MLS, the NPB and the IPL; from the season in the NBA, the NHL and the NFL (ending with the 2009 Super Bowl), and from the season in the English Premier League, the SPL, Serie A and for the Spanish clubs. The latest figures as we process them are available on a companion database at This review found the New York Yankees to be the highest-earning sports team in the world by average first-team pay, followed by Real Madrid, Barcelona and Chelsea, then the NBA's Dallas Mavericks. NBA and MLB teams dominate the top 30; our full list includes 211 clubs. The NFL is the richest and most popular sports league on the planet when judged solely on its massive TV income and average crowds per game, by far the highest of any domestic league. But the NFL is only at No6 in our best-paying leagues by average earnings. Its pay distribution within the league, with a ratio of 1.86 to 1 in average pay between the best paid and worst paid teams, is more equal than any other league. This report does not draw conclusions on what is the "fairest" league, or the "best". It simply provides a snapshot of wages that is, by definition, already historic, plus some basic analysis between pay and performance. We hope it prompts debate on the underlying themes, and further investigation, including by ourselves in future reports. Thank you for reading. Nick Harris Editor Sporting Intelligence April 2010 All figures are from the most recent completed seasons for each league where there was a full set of data available for all the clubs in that league at our cut-off point - the end of That means numbers from ANNUAL REVIEW OF GLOBAL SPORTS SALARIES 2010
