The Cup is named after Julie and Spencer Penrose, who were tremendously successful in the business world and did much of it in Colorado Springs in the early 1900s. The couple made much of their money in the copper industry, which is why the trophy includes copper stars on it. The Penroses also set up the El Pomar Foundation, which still today helps pay for amateur sports and other non-profits, including the NCHC office located in the Copper Building next to the Penrose House on the grounds of the Penrose compound in Colorado Springs. The El Pomar Foundation has also issued grants for the Penrose Cup, medallions for each individual champion and the NCHC s annual Post-Graduate Scholarship. Denver won its first Penrose Cup last season, while North Dakota won back-to-back Penrose Cups in 2015 and 2016 after St. Cloud State won the inaugural season. NCHC Tournament/Frozen Faceoff The NCHC Tournament will consist of four quarterfinal series on the first weekend following regular-season play (March 9-11, 2018). The four higher seeds will host the four lower seeds in a best two-out-of-three format. Seed #1 will host Seed #8, Seed #2 will host Seed #7, Seed #3 will host Seed #6, and Seed #4 will host Seed #5. The winners of the four quarterfinal series will advance to the NCHC Frozen Faceoff at Xcel Energy Center in Saint Paul, Minn. for the two semifinal games on Friday, March 16. Semifinal games will be reseeded based on the final regularseason standings. The winners of the two semifinal games (4:08/7:38 p.m. CT) will then meet in the Championship Game (7:38 p.m. CT) on Saturday, March 17 for an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament, while the two losers from the semifinal games will face each other in the third-place game (3:38 p.m. CT) earlier in the day Final NCHC Standings Conference Overall Pts. 17 Previous Week Round-Up FRIDAY, NOV. 17 While three National Collegiate Hockey Conference (NCHC) teams limited their opponent to only one goal on Friday, the top-3 tilt between No. 1/1 Denver and No. 3/3 North Dakota lived up to the hype as the teams combined for nine goals. UND erased a 3-0 deficit and used a late third-period goal to stun top-ranked Denver, 5-4, at Magness Arena. Also earning a road win thanks to late goals was No. 14/15 Minnesota Duluth, which struck twice in the final six minutes Friday to break a 1-1 tie and top Miami, 3-1 in Oxford. No. 15/14 Western Michigan jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead and never looked back, while nearly pitching a second straight shutout in a 4-1 win over Omaha to remain in first place in the NCHC. Second-ranked St. Cloud State also cruised to a win, thumping Colorado College, 6-1, to remain perfect at home this season. In another thrilling battle between No. 1/1 Denver and No. 3/3 North Dakota, UND got the better of the Pioneers, erasing a three-goal deficit to pick up a 5-4 win Friday at Magness Arena. Denver (6-3-2, NCHC) jumped out to a 3-0 lead using a power play goal and a short-handed goal, before UND (8-2-3, NCHC) struck twice in less than two minutes late in the second period to bring the Fighting Hawks within one at 3-2. UND then grabbed the lead when sophomore defenseman Colton Poolman and junior blue liner Christian Wolanin, who set up Poolman s marker, scored within 1:10 of each other, the latter coming on the power play. Junior forward Troy Terry, who also had an assist in the loss, answered with a power play goal of his own for DU to tie the game again at 4-4. But with 2:31 remaining, senior forward Johnny Simonson redirected a shot from the point into the net for the game-winner. UND finished with a edge in shots on goal, including over the final 40 minutes. Nearly recording a second straight shutout, No. 15/14 Western Michigan had to settle for a 4-1 win over Omaha Friday night at Lawson Ice Arena. The Broncos (7-4-1, NCHC) stayed atop the NCHC standings with the win, striking twice in the first frame, the first on the power play and the eventual game-winner from junior forward Colt Conrad, who netted his team-leading eighth tally of the year. WMU then tacked on one more marker each frame to grab a 4-0 lead, including one from sophomore forward Hugh McGing, who also assisted on the first goal for a two-point night. The Mavericks (4-4-1, NCHC) broke up the shutout with 52 seconds remaining in the contest, after sophomore goalie Ben Blacker logged a shutout at Minnesota Duluth last Saturday. Blacker finished with 24 saves in the win as WMU outshot Omaha, After being swept last weekend, No. 2/2 St. Cloud State wasted little time bouncing back, jumping out to a 3-0 first-period lead and rolling to a 6-1 win over Colorado College Friday at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center. Six different Huskies scored a goal with freshman forward Easton Brodzinski opening the scoring 6:45 into the game. Junior defenseman Will Borgen doubled the lead with the eventual game-winning goal seven minutes later, while both added assists, as well, for two-point nights. Junior forward Robby Jackson made it 5-0 nothing in the first minute of the final frame, before the Tigers (7-6-0, NCHC) broke up the shutout on the power play. SCSU outshot CC, 46-22, in the win, while junior Jeff Smith made 21 saves in the win for the Huskies. Using a pair of late third-period goals, No. 14/15 Minnesota Duluth broke a tie and pulled away for a 3-1 win at Miami Friday at Steve Cady Arena. The Bulldogs (6-5-2, NCHC) struck twice in the final 5:09 of the third period, with senior forward Jared Thomas scoring the game-winner on the power play for his second goal of the night and first two goals of the season. His first goal opened the game s scoring in the first frame. Miami (4-6-1, NCHC) tied the game early in the third period on the man advantage off the stick of sophomore forward Carson Meyer. Freshman defenseman Scott Perunovich capped the scoring with a blast from the point for the Bulldogs. The RedHawks out shot UMD, 29-19, but sophomore goalie Hunter Shepard made 28 saves to earn the win in net. SATURDAY, NOV. 18 Home-ice advantage certainly proved to be a deciding factor in the NCHC on Saturday as all four home teams won their series finales, including two teams that earned a sweep. No. 2/2 St. Cloud State used a strong power play and a big third period to pull away from Colorado College for a 5-1 win and a series sweep. No. 15/14 Western Michigan also picked up a sweep to remain in first place in the NCHC, downing Omaha, 5-2, at Lawson Ice Arena. In a top-three battle, No. 1/1 Denver earned a weekend split with a 4-1 win over No. 3/3 North Dakota, behind three power play goals. In Oxford, Miami used a late second-period surge to skate past No. 14/15 Minnesota Duluth, 3-2, and also salvage a series split. Continuing its strong play at home this season, No. 15/14 Western Michigan completed a sweep of Omaha and remained in first place in the NCHC standings with a 5-2 victory Saturday at Lawson Ice Arena. The Broncos (8-4-1, NCHC) jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first period with a pair of goals from sophomore forward Wade Allison in the span of 13 seconds. Senior forward David Pope put the Mavericks (4-5-1, NCHC) on the board with a power play marker early in the second stanza, but the Broncos answered less then two minutes later to regain a two-goal cushion at 3-1. Freshman forward Ethen Frank then made it 4-1 with a short-handed tally midway through the middle period, with sophomore forward Hugh McGing setting up WMU s third and fourth goals. Omaha closed within 4-2, but was unable to get within a goal as the Broncos moved to at home this season. Junior forward Colt Conrad added an empty-net goal and an assist giving him a team-best nine goals this season. The Broncos outshot Omaha, 34-29, with sophomore goalie Ben Blacker earning the win in net with 27 saves. Western Michigan hosts No. 19 Colgate for a pair of non-conference games next weekend, while Omaha welcomes No. 20 Northern Michigan for two games against the WCHA foe next Friday and Saturday. Three power play goals and a four-goal third period propelled No. 2/2 St. Cloud State to a 5-1 win over Colorado College Saturday at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center, completing a weekend sweep. Junior forward Jacob Benson opened the scoring on the man advantage midway through the first frame, Nov , 2017 NCHCHockey.com NCHC.tv 17

18 Previous Week Round-Up and neither team found the back of the net again until the third period. Freshman forward Easton Brodzinski struck for a second straight night, also on the power play, to double the Huskies lead early in the final frame, while 33 ticks later freshman defenseman Luke Jaycox scored his first career goal to make it 3-0. The Tigers (7-7-0, NCHC) broke up the shutout with a power play goal from junior forward Mason Bergh, his team-leading ninth, but two more special teams goals sealed the SCSU (9-2-0, NCHC) victory. SCSU outshot CC, 39-23, in the win, including 31-15, over the final 40 minutes. The Huskies were also 3-for-7 on the power play and 4-for-5 on the penalty kill. Both teams are off next weekend with SCSU back in action Dec. 1-2 at Omaha, while the Tigers don t play again until a home-and-home series with No. 1/1 Denver on Dec Behind three power play goals and a big third period, No. 1/1 Denver salvaged a weekend split against No. 3/3 North Dakota as the Pioneers topped the Fighting Hawks, 4-1, Saturday in a top-three clash at Magness Arena. Freshman defenseman Matt Kiersted opened the scoring for UND (8-3-3, NCHC) in the first half of the first frame, but DU sophomore forward Henrik Borgström scored the first of his two power play markers late in the opening period to tie the game. The game remained tied until the third period, when junior forward Colin Staub tallied the game-winner only 1:05 into the third period. Classmate Troy Terry and Borgström set up the goal, while they each scored power play goals later in the stanza to seal the victory. Borgström finished with four points on two goals and two assists, while Terry had three points, including two helpers. Denver (7-3-2, NCHC) outshot UND, 32-25, and went 3-for-8 on the power play. The Pioneers are off next weekend and play at No. 14/15 Minnesota Duluth Dec The Fighting Hawks, meanwhile, return home to host Union for two non-conference games in Grand Forks next weekend. Using two goals in the final seven minutes of the second period, Miami rallied past No. 14/15 Minnesota Duluth for a 3-2 win Saturday at Steve Cady Arena, picking up a weekend split in the process. The Bulldogs (6-6-2, NCHC) grabbed a 1-0 lead in the first period, before junior forward Ryan Siroky tied the game for the RedHawks (5-6-1, NCHC) with 6:37 remaining in the second stanza. Sophomore forward Carson Meyer then gave Miami its first lead of the series when he popped home the puck with less than two minutes to go in the middle period. Junior forward Josh Melnick doubled the Red- Hawks lead to 3-1 early in the final frame and an extra attacker goal from junior forward Parker Mackay late was not enough as UMD s comeback fell short. Despite the loss, the Bulldogs outshot Miami, 29-24, but sophomore goalie Ryan Larkin compiled 27 saves to earn the win in net. The RedHawks step out of conference play next weekend for two games at in-state rival Bowling Green, while UMD hosts WCHA foe No. 5/8 Minnesota State for a single game on Saturday. #NCHCHockey Nov , 2017
