The Cup is named after Julie and Spencer Penrose, who were tremendously successful in the business world and did much of it in Colorado Springs in the early 1900s. The couple made much of their money in the copper industry, which is why the trophy includes copper stars on it. The Penroses also set up the El Pomar Foundation, which still today helps pay for amateur sports and other non-profits, including the NCHC office located in the Copper Building next to the Penrose House on the grounds of the Penrose compound in Colorado Springs. The El Pomar Foundation has also issued grants for the Penrose Cup, medallions for each individual champion and the NCHC s annual Post-Graduate Scholarship. Denver won its first Penrose Cup last season, while North Dakota won back-to-back Penrose Cups in 2015 and 2016 after St. Cloud State won the inaugural season. NCHC Tournament/Frozen Faceoff The NCHC Tournament will consist of four quarterfinal series on the first weekend following regular-season play (March 9-11, 2018). The four higher seeds will host the four lower seeds in a best two-out-of-three format. Seed #1 will host Seed #8, Seed #2 will host Seed #7, Seed #3 will host Seed #6, and Seed #4 will host Seed #5. The winners of the four quarterfinal series will advance to the NCHC Frozen Faceoff at Xcel Energy Center in Saint Paul, Minn. for the two semifinal games on Friday, March 16. Semifinal games will be reseeded based on the final regularseason standings. The winners of the two semifinal games (4:08/7:38 p.m. CT) will then meet in the Championship Game (7:38 p.m. CT) on Saturday, March 17 for an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament, while the two losers from the semifinal games will face each other in the third-place game (3:38 p.m. CT) earlier in the day Final NCHC Standings Conference Overall Pts. 19 Previous Week Round-Up FRIDAY, OCT. 13 After only going.500 in non-conference play to start the season last weekend, National Collegiate Hockey Conference (NCHC) teams picked up the pace on Friday, posting a non-conference record, plus earning an exhibition win, as all eight NCHC teams were in action on the night. Omaha opened its regular season in strong fashion, downing No. 12/12 UMass Lowell in Lowell, 4-2, to give first-year head coach Mike Gabinet a win in his collegiate head coaching debut. No. 4/6 St. Cloud state overcame an early 3-0 deficit in its home opener to rally past Alaska, 6-3, and remain perfect on the season. Colorado College s offense exploded in its home opener, burying Alaska-Anchorage, 6-1, for its second straight win, while No. 8/8 North Dakota scored late in the third period to nab a 2-1 win over St. Lawrence in its home opener. In a top-five Frozen Four rematch, top-ranked Denver and No. 6/4 Notre Dame skated to an entertaining 2-2 overtime tie in DU s regular-season debut, while Western Michigan also finished in a 2-2 tie with No. 15/15 Clarkson to remain unbeaten at home this season. The lone NCHC team to lose Friday night was No. 9/5 Minnesota Duluth, which fell at Bemidji State, 5-2, in the first half of a home-and-home series. Miami was the only NCHC team not taking part in non-conference play Friday as the RedHawks earned a 7-5 exhibition win over the U.S. Under-18 National Team in Plymouth, Mich. Making his debut as head coach at his alma mater, the Mike Gabinet era started strong as Omaha opened the regular season with a 4-2 win at No. 12/12 UMass Lowell (0-3-0) in the Tsongas Center. The Mavericks (1-0-0) jumped out to a 4-0 lead midway through the second period before the River Hawks scored two power play goals to break up the shutout and cut the final deficit in half. Senior defenseman and captain Joel Messner tallied a career-high three points, including his first career multi-goal game, as he scored the game-winner in the second period. Senior forward Tyler Vesel chipped in two points, scoring the opening goal unassisted and setting up Messner s first tally. Shots finished even at 31 apiece. Despite falling behind 3-0 less than nine minutes into the game, No. 4/6 St. Cloud State slowly chipped away to score the final six goals of the game and earn a 6-3 comeback win over Alaska in its home opener at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center on Friday night. Trailing by three 8:29 into the game, the Huskies (2-0-0) got on the board with the first of two goals from sophomore forward Nick Poehling. A power play marker from junior defenseman Jimmy Schuldt in the second stanza cut the deficit to one and Poehling then tied the game five minutes into the final frame. Schuldt added his second tally on the power play three minutes later, which was the game-winner as he gave SCSU the lead for good. Schuldt also had an assist for a three-point outing, while junior forward Robby Jackson also had three points on a goal and two helpers. SCSU outshot the Nanooks (0-2-1), 42-25, in the victory. Scoring its most goals at home since February of 2013, Colorado College exploded in its home opener for a 6-1 win over former WCHA foe Alaska-Anchorage Friday at the Broadmoor World Arena. The Tigers (2-1-0) wasted little time jumping ahead as junior defenseman Ben Israel scored only 29 ticks into the game with an assist from sophomore forward Nick Halloran. CC led 3-0 after 20 minutes with Halloran having a hand in all three, including scoring the third. He also dished out his third primary assist in the second period to cap a career-high four-point night and stake CC to an insurmountable 4-0 lead. Junior forward Trey Bradley had three assists himself, while classmate Mason Bergh and fellow junior defenseman Cole McCaskill each had a goal and an assist. The Tigers outshot the Seawolves (0-2-1), 39-26, in the victory. Continuing its trend from last weekend, No. 8/8 North Dakota was once again in a tight game late, but managed to avoid overtime on Friday night by scoring a late goal to pick up a 2-1 win over St. Lawrence at Ralph Engelstad Arena in its home opener. Sophomore forward Ludvig Hoff put the Fighting Hawks (2-0-1) in front in the closing seconds of the first period, but the Saints (0-3- 0) used a power play goal in the second stanza to pull even. With the game still tied late, freshman forward Collin Adams scored his second goal of the season on the power play with 3:49 remaining to keep UND unbeaten on the season. North Dakota finished with a edge in shots on goal. In a highly anticipated Frozen Four rematch, No. 1/1 Denver and No. 6/4 Notre Dame skated to an entertaining 2-2 overtime tie Friday at the Compton Family Ice Arena in DU s regular-season debut. Sophomore forward Henrik Borgström picked up where he left off last season, scoring both goals for the Pioneers (0-0-1), the first tying the game 15 seconds after Notre Dame (2-0-1) took the lead and the second briefly putting DU in front while on the power play. Denver outshot the Irish, 48-29, including 21-7 in the third period. In overtime, Notre Dame put seven shots on goal but senior goalie Tanner Jaillet stopped them all as the teams settled for a tie and Jaillet finished with 27 saves. Also ending in a 2-2 overtime tie Friday night was Western Michigan, which remained unbeaten at home this season after the draw with No. 15/15 Clarkson (2-0-1) at Lawson Ice Arena. Freshman forward Dawson DiPietro scored the first two goals of his collegiate career for the Broncos (2-1-1), the first only 1:33 into the game and the second on the power play midway through the second stanza to tie the game. Sophomore goalie Ben Blacker made 32 saves in net to earn the tie for WMU as the Broncos were outshot, 34-31, and went only 1-for-8 on the power play. Allowing four goals in the third period, No. 9/5 Minnesota Duluth fell at Bemidji State, 5-2, Friday at the Sanford Center. The Bulldogs (1-2-0) outshot the Beavers (1-0-0), 29-17, but Michael Bitzer made 27 saves for BSU. Senior forward Blake Young put UMD in front midway through the first frame, but Gerry Fitzgerald scored on the power play in the second period to tie the game for the first of his three points for the Beavers. BSU then tacked on three goals in the first 7:30 of the third period to pull away for the victory. Senior forward Karson Kuhlman added UMD s other goal with an extra attacker late in the final frame. In the lone exhibition game Friday night, Miami outlasted the U.S. Under-18 Team for an exciting, 7-5 victory at USA Hockey Arena in Plymouth, Mich. Junior defenseman Grant Hutton and sophomore forward Gordie Green each chipped in two goals while junior forward Josh Melnick dished out a trio of assists. After Miami (0-2-0) fell behind in the first period, Hutton scored back-to-back goals to put the RedHawks in front and they would not trail again, building the lead to 4-1 in the second period. The U-18s fought back to tie the game at 4-4, but 30 seconds after that goal, Miami regained the lead. Green eventually tallied the game-winner in the third period with the game knotted at 5-5. 20 Previous Week Round-Up SATURDAY, OCT. 14 After four National Collegiate Hockey Conference (NCHC) teams picked up non-conference victories on Friday night, the NCHC again earned four non-conference wins on Saturday with three of those teams earning home sweeps. For the second straight night, No. 4/6 St. Cloud State rallied to earn a win over Alaska, this time needing overtime for a 5-4 win to cap a sweep and remain undefeated. No. 8/8 North Dakota s offense finally came to life in a 6-1 win over St. Lawrence to complete a home sweep, while junior forward Mason Bergh recorded his first career hat trick to power Colorado College to a 3-2 win over Alaska-Anchorage and its first weekend sweep since Dec. 4-5, Top-ranked Denver picked up its first win of the season with a 4-2 victory at No. 6/4 Notre Dame after tying on Friday. No. 9/5 Minnesota Duluth skated to a scoreless overtime tie with Bemidji State after falling Friday in Bemidji in the first half of the home-and-home series. The two NCHC teams to fall short Saturday were Omaha, which settled for a weekend split after a 5-2 loss at No. 12/12 UMass Lowell, and Western Michigan, which was edge by No. 15/15 Clarkson, 4-2, for its first home loss of the year. Scoring the game s first two goals and last two goals, No. 1/1 Denver picked up its first win of the season by overcoming a rally from No. 6/4 Notre Dame for a 4-2 victory Saturday at the Compton Family Ice Arena.
