Conference games still tied after a five-minute 5-on-5 overtime advance to a five-minute 3-on-3 overtime (and sudden victory shootout if still tied) with the team that wins the second overtime/shootout receiving an extra point in the standings (3/SW in the standings), making all games worth three points. The 3-on-3 overtime and shootouts only affect conference standings while the game is officially a tie for NCAA purposes. NCHC teams are against TV: Altitude 2/TSN 2 ECAC teams so far this season and against ASU, as Omaha faced the Sun Devils back in October. Overall, NCHC teams are a combined 37- Saturday, Dec in non-conference play this season, with the.667 win percentage second among the six conferences behind only the Big Ten (.697). Arizona State at Colorado College, 6:07 p.m. MT Five NCHC teams are ranked in the USCHO.com Poll, tying the Big Ten TV: CET Sports (Xfinity ch. 900 in Colo.) for the most from one conference, while all eight NCHC teams are receiving Dartmouth at No. 2/2 Denver, 7:05 p.m. MT votes and would be ranked in the top 25. NCHC teams own the top two TV: Altitude 2 spots in the USCHO.com Poll for the eighth straight week, with St. Cloud Sunday, Dec. 17 Arizona State at Colorado College, 2:07 p.m. MT State switching places with Denver and taking over the top spot. With SCSU in the top spot, the NCHC has now held the No. 1 ranking in the USCHO Poll 35 of the last 37 weeks, with half of the NCHC teams earning the No. 1 spot during that span (SCSU, DU, UND and UMD). Since the USCHO Poll on Last Week s Results Nov. 17, 2014, the NCHC has had a team ranked in the top two 93 times. Hockey East is second during that span with only 28 top-two appearances. He is the only player in the NCAA with multiple hat tricks this year. 3 Team Notes/Match-Ups Colorado College Tigers Head Coach: Mike Haviland (4th year) Record at CC: Record: ( /0, 8th) Record: ( /0 NCHC, 5th) Lettermen Ret./Lost: 19/10 Colorado College snapped a 14-game losing streak to rival Denver with a pair of ties last weekend, drawing 4-4 in Denver on Friday and 1-1 in Colorado Springs Saturday. Both games ended in 3-on-3 overtime, with CC getting the extra NCHC point Friday and DU doing so on Saturday. With the two ties vs. Denver, the Battle for The Gold Pan will stretch to the second-half series for the first time since , the last time CC won the trophy. Sophomore forward Nick Halloran saw his career-long six-game point-scoring streak snapped on Saturday, after notching three points (2g, 1a) on Friday. It was his second career multi-goal game (10/22/16 at UNH). He finished with 10 points (3g, 7a) during the point streak and now has 22 points on the season, which ties for 12th nationally. Halloran s 15 assists this season already surpassed the most by a Tiger in each of the last two full seasons and tie for eighth in the NCAA. The Tigers continued their success on Saturday with the tie against DU. CC is now on Saturday this season, with its only losses coming at home to No. 3 North Dakota (Oct. 28) and at No. 2 St. Cloud State (Nov. 18). CC won five games on Saturday all of last season. Denver Pioneers Head Coach: Jim Montgomery (5th year) Record at DU: Record: ( /2, 1st) Record: ( /0 NCHC, t-3rd) Lettermen Ret./Lost: 15/7 Denver saw its 14-game winning streak over rival Colorado College snapped in a pair of ties last weekend. The sides finished even at 4-4 Friday in Denver, with CC scoring in 3-on-3 overtime for the extra standings point, while DU earned the extra point Saturday after a 1-1 overtime tie in Colorado Springs. Sophomore forward Henrik Borgström dished out an assist on DU s lone goal in Saturday s tie. He is now third nationally, averaging 1.53 points per game, while his 0.87 goals per game are tops in the country. Freshman defenseman Ian Mitchell scored his first career goal in Friday s tie with CC. He is tied for fourth among NCAA defensemen with 10 power play points and is second with 10 power play assists. The Pioneers have not allowed a power-play goal in their last four games, going 11-for-11 on the penalty kill during that stretch. Denver does not take many penalties though, averaging the fewest penalty minutes per game in the NCAA, being whistled for only 8.06 penalty minutes per game (tied with Bemidji State). 4 Team Notes/Match-Ups Miami RedHawks Head Coach: Enrico Blasi (19th year) Record at MU: Record: ( /1, 7th) Record: ( NCHC, 6th) Lettermen Ret./Lost: 17/4 For the second straight weekend, Miami split with a top-10 opponent, winning Friday s game at Western Michigan, 5-2, before falling in overtime on Saturday, 4-3. With the results, the RedHawks are now on Fridays this season, winning three straight on Friday, compared to just in Saturday games this season. Junior defenseman Grant Hutton scored a short-handed goal in Saturday s loss at WMU, becoming the first NCHC blue liner with a short-handed tally this season. He has eight goals on the season, which tie for the NCAA lead among defensemen, while his six power play goals are two better than any other NCAA blue liner. His 0.44 goals per game are first nationally by himself among NCAA defensemen. Sophomore forward Gordie Green logged four points against WMU with two goals and an assist on Friday, while adding another goal on Saturday. His two goals Friday tied a career high and marked his second multi-goal game this season. He leads Miami and is tied for 12th nationally with 22 points (9g, 13a) this season. RedHawk defensemen have combined for 15 goals this season, which ties for third in the NCAA among blue-line scoring. UMD put up 11 goals in the series after totaling 12 goals in their previous eight games combined, never scoring more than three in a game. Freshman defenseman Scott Perunovich notched four points in the split at Omaha, including a career-high three points (1g, 2a) in Saturday s victory. He now leads all rookie defensemen nationally with 16 points (4g, 12a) on the season. Sophomore forward Riley Tufte notched two goals in Saturday s win for his first multi-goal game this season and third of his career. He now has a team-best eight goals on the season, just one shy of the nine he tallied in 37 games as a rookie last year. UND has now played in both of the only NCHC games to go to a shootout this season, winning them both, with junior defenseman Christian Wolanin scoring the shootout-winning goal both times. Sophomore forward Cole Smith scored a goal in both games at SCSU and now has a goal in three straight games after notching one goal in his first 15 games this season. The seven goals Friday marked a season high for the Mavericks and their most since Dec. 3, 2016 in a 7-4 win at Wisconsin. Sophomore forward Zach Jordan recorded his first career hat trick in Friday s win. It was the first hat trick by a Maverick in the two-and-ahalf year history of Omaha s Baxter Arena and It was UNO s first hat trick since Dec. 3, 2016 when Austin Ortega had three at Wisconsin. Jordan, who scored only one goal in 23 games as a freshman last year, has six goals in his last six games and eight goals on the season. It was only WMU s second overtime game this season as the Broncos are now in OT. Sophomore forward Wade Allison recorded his second hat trick of the season and of his career in Saturday s 4-3 win over Miami. His hat trick was a natural one, scoring the game s final three goals to erase a 3-1 deficit, tallying the game-winner in overtime. The natural hat trick was the first natural hat trick by a WMU player since Brent Walton had one against Notre Dame on Dec. 2, Allison now has 14 goals on the season, which lead the NCHC and tie him for second nationally. His 25 points this year tie for third in the country. Allison has already topped his freshman goal total of 12 from last year. Junior forward Colt Conrad dished out three assists in the series against Miami, including on Allison s OT game-winner. In Friday s loss, he handed out the primary assist on WMU s first goal. The next night, the Flyers draft pick recorded a natural hat trick to erase a two-goal deficit and earn a 4-3 win in overtime. Allison set up the game s opening goal for a career-high four-point night. With WMU trailing 3-1, Allison started the comeback and tied the game with 4:02 left in regulation. He then scored in OT to cap the hat trick. He was named First Star of the Game Saturday and finished with a +2. In the series, Allison totaled three goals, two assists and put seven shots on goal. Perunovich chipped in four points in a split at Omaha. In the series opener Friday, he scored UMD s fourth goal in an eventual loss. Despite the loss, Perunovich still logged a +2. The next night, Perunovich earned First Star of the Game after tallying a career-high three points in a 6-2 victory. He had the primary helper on the game s first goal to put UMD in front on the power play, while also assisting on the Bulldogs second goal. He then sealed the win, scoring UMD s fifth goal early in the third period. Perunovich finished the weekend with two goals, two assists, +3, three shots on goal and one blocked shot. Knies chipped in two points to help Miami earn a split at WMU last weekend after logging only one point in his previous 10 outings. In Friday s 5-2 victory, he scored the RedHawks fourth goal, his first since Oct. 28, to help put the game out of reach at 4-1 in the third period. He also fired two shots on goal and was +2 in the contest. The next night, Knies had the primary assist on Miami s third goal, which came on the power play, to make it 3-1 RedHawks, before WMU rallied for a 4-3 overtime win. Jon Lizotte, Jr., D, SCSU Dished out a pair of assists in Saturday s win over UND, including on the game-winning goal, while blocking six shots and posting a +3 in the weekend series NCHC Players of the Week (previous winners) Leclerc backstopped CC to a pair of overtime ties against then-no. 1 Denver last weekend. 8 Players of the Month/Awards NCHC Monthly Honors - November Player of the Month Borgström logged a point in all six games he played in November, including three games with at least three points. The Florida Panthers draft pick led all NCHC skaters and tied for the NCAA lead with 14 points in November, while his Henrik Borgström Denver Sophomore Forward Helsinki, Finland 1.33 goals per game and 2.33 points per game during the month were both best in the nation. Borgström scored eight goals in his six games, which tied for the NCHC lead and tied for third nationally in November. He also chipped in six assists, or one per game. Borgström opened November with a five-point weekend in a pair of losses at WMU Nov In the series opener, he tallied a career-high four points, including his first career hat trick, and posted a +3, while earning the game s Third Star. The next night he added another goal. The following weekend, Nov , Borgström compiled four points in a sweep of St. Cloud State. In the opener on Nov. 10, the Finn scored two goals to book-end the 4-2 victory, while assisting on the game-winning goal as well, and had an assist the next night. Borgström rounded out November with another five-point weekend in a split with UND Nov After an assist Friday, he matched his career high with four points, having a hand in each goal in Saturday s 4-1 victory, scoring two and adding two assists, including on the game-winner. He was named First Star of the Game and earned NCHC Offensive Player of the Week for his efforts. During the month, Borgström fired 27 shots on goal (4.50 per game) and was a +3. Rookie of the Month Scott Perunovich Minnesota Duluth Freshman Defenseman Hibbing, Minn. Perunovich paced the Bulldogs with six points in seven games in November, as UMD went during the month. His six points ranked second among NCHC rookies during the month, scoring a goal and adding five assists, while he posted a +3 plus-minus and blocked 10 shots in November, both of which also ranked second among NCHC freshmen. The draft-eligible free agent notched a point in five of his seven outings, with one multipoint game, as his only scoreless contests came when UMD was shut out. Perunovich opened his November with an assist in a loss at St. Cloud State Nov. 3. The following weekend the former Cedar Rapids Roughrider handed out another helper in UMD s series-opening shutout win over Western Michigan Nov. 10, when he was +2. Perunovich tallied three points in a split at Miami Nov and was +2 each night to earn NCHC Defenseman of the Week accolades. In Friday s 3-1 win, he set up UMD s first goal and capped the win with his second career goal to earn Second Star of the Game. The following night he added an assist in a 3-2 defeat. Perunovich then capped November with another assist on UMD s third goal in a 3-1 win over then-no. 8 Minnesota State on Nov. 25 to stretch his point streak to three games, while again logging a +2 plus-minus. St. Cloud State has the top offense in the NCAA, scoring 4.27 goals per game. Denver is fifth with 3.62 goals per game, while Western Michigan ranks eighth scoring 3.42 goals per game. Defensively, SCSU ranks fourth, allowing only 2.07 goals per game, while North Dakota is sixth in the country, giving up 2.20 goals per game. (page 29) NCHC teams have done well to limit their opponents number of shots on goal this season, as three of the top five teams in the NCAA in shots on goal against per game hail from the conference. North Dakota is third in the country, surrendering only shots on goal per game, while Miami is fourth (25.06) and Minnesota Duluth is fifth (25.42). Denver sophomore forward Henrik Borgström leads the country averaging 0.87 goals per game, while his 1.53 points per game are third nationally. The Cup is named after Julie and Spencer Penrose, who were tremendously successful in the business world and did much of it in Colorado Springs in the early 1900s. The couple made much of their money in the copper industry, which is why the trophy includes copper stars on it. The Penroses also set up the El Pomar Foundation, which still today helps pay for amateur sports and other non-profits, including the NCHC office located in the Copper Building next to the Penrose House on the grounds of the Penrose compound in Colorado Springs. The El Pomar Foundation has also issued grants for the Penrose Cup, medallions for each individual champion and the NCHC s annual Post-Graduate Scholarship. Denver won its first Penrose Cup last season, while North Dakota won back-to-back Penrose Cups in 2015 and 2016 after St. Cloud State won the inaugural season. NCHC Tournament/Frozen Faceoff The NCHC Tournament will consist of four quarterfinal series on the first weekend following regular-season play (March 9-11, 2018). The four higher seeds will host the four lower seeds in a best two-out-of-three format. Seed #1 will host Seed #8, Seed #2 will host Seed #7, Seed #3 will host Seed #6, and Seed #4 will host Seed #5. The winners of the four quarterfinal series will advance to the NCHC Frozen Faceoff at Xcel Energy Center in Saint Paul, Minn. for the two semifinal games on Friday, March 16. Semifinal games will be reseeded based on the final regularseason standings. In a battle of top-five teams nationally and the top two teams in the NCHC standings, No. 5/5 North Dakota earned two points with a 2-2 overtime tie and a sudden-death shootout win at No. 2/2 St. Cloud State to move into a tie for first place in the NCHC with the Huskies. Omaha snapped a five-game losing streak in NCHC play with a 7-5 win over No. 17 Minnesota Duluth behind three power play goals and sophomore forward Zach Jordan s first career hat trick. In Kalamazoo, Miami also knocked off a top-20 foe, downing rival No. 11/10 Western Michigan, 5-2, at Lawson Ice Arena behind three points each from junior forward Josh Melnick and sophomore forward Gordie Green as the Broncos dropped their fourth straight game. And in the Gold Pan rivalry, Colorado College snapped a 14-game losing streak to top-ranked Denver, using a last-second goal in regulation to earn a 4-4 tie, before picking up the extra NCHC standings point with a 3-on-3 overtime goal. In a thrilling top-five clash Friday at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center, the game lived up to the hype as No. 5/5 North Dakota and No. 2/2 St. Cloud State skated to a 2-2 overtime tie, before the Fighting Hawks earned the extra point in the NCHC standings by winning a shootout. The Huskies (11-2-1, NCHC) grabbed one-goal leads twice, the first off the stick of freshman forward Easton Brodzinski midway through the second period and again when sophomore forward Ryan Poehling stole the puck and scored unassisted early in the third period. But UND (10-4-5, /2 NCHC) answered within four minutes each time, junior forward Rhett Gardner doing so first and then sophomore forward Cole Smith had the game-tying goal for good. After scoreless 5-on-5 and 3-on-3 overtimes, UND junior defenseman Christian Wolanin scored in the first round of the shootout for the extra standings point. SCSU outshot the Fighting Hawks, 33-32, though UND had a 5-1 edge in overtime. North Dakota also killed all six Husky power plays. Behind three points each from junior forward Josh Melnick and sophomore forward Gordie Green, Miami knocked off rival No. 11/10 Western Michigan, 5-2, Friday night at Lawson Ice Arena in their series opener. Green opened the scoring midway through the first frame with the first of his two goals, but a WMU power play goal from sophomore forward Hugh McGing, who had a two-point night, tied the game early in the second stanza. However, the RedHawks (8-7-2, NCHC) answered less than a minute later with a power play goal of their own off the stick of sophomore forward Karch Bachman to regain the lead. Melnick and Green picked up the assists. Melnick then doubled Miami s lead later in the middle period when he stole the puck and wristed it into the net to make it 3-1 for the eventual game-winner. The lead ballooned to 4-1 before the Broncos (9-8-1, NCHC) struck on the power play for a second time to make it 4-2, but Green sealed the victory with an empty-netter for his second goal of the night. WMU outshot Miami, 34-25, in the loss, but sophomore goalie Ryan Larkin made 32 saves to earn the win in net for the RedHawks. The Broncos finished 2-for-5 on the power play while MU was 1-for-4. In a high-scoring, wild affair, Omaha received a hat trick from sophomore forward Zach Jordan and tallied three times on the power play to outlast No. 17 Minnesota Duluth, 7-5, Friday at Baxter Arena. The teams wasted little time getting on the board as senior forward Avery Peterson put the Bulldogs (7-9- 2, NCHC) in front only 23 ticks into the game, while Jordan answered to tie it minutes later. The sides then traded four more goals to finish the first frame knotted at 3-3. Freshman defenseman Scott Perunovich gave UMD the lead again 37 seconds into the second, but the Mavericks (7-7-1, NCHC) rattled off three straight goals to close the period. Jordan completed his first career hat trick with two of the goals, including the game-winner to make it 6-4, while senior forward David Pope added his second power play goal of the night during the middle period as well. UMD got within one early in the third period but would get no closer as Omaha snapped a five-game losing streak in NCHC play. Omaha held a slight, 36-34, edge in shots, while going 3-for-7 on the power play and 6-for-6 on the penalty kill. Snapping a 14-game losing streak to top-ranked Denver, Colorado College earned two points against their long-time rivals, using late-game heroics to earn a 4-4 overtime tie Friday at Magness Arena, while scoring in 3-on-3 overtime to get the extra point in the NCHC standings. With the Tigers (7-7-1, /0 NCHC) trailing 4-3, junior forward Mason Bergh capped a three-point night by scoring his 10th goal of the season with an extra attacker with only 7 ticks left in regulation to force the tie and overtime. After neither team scored in 5-on-5 overtime, freshman forward Christiano Versich tallied in 3-on-3 overtime to get the extra standings point for CC. Colorado College took a 1-0 lead in the closing seconds of the first period, but the Pioneers (9-3-3, NCHC) answered early in the second stanza. Sophomore forward Nick Halloran scored two goals and had three points with his first tally putting CC back in front and the second tying the game at 3-3 in the third period. Denver grabbed a 3-2 lead after two goals in two minutes to close the middle frame with junior forward Dylan Gambrell scoring one and assisting the other. After Halloran s second tally, DU regained the lead with a snipe with 2:28 left in regulation, setting the stage for Bergh. Denver outshot CC, 38-31, in the tie. SATURDAY, DEC. 9 On the final night of National Collegiate Hockey Conference (NCHC) play in 2017, Saturday turned out to be somewhat of déjà vu from Friday as once again two games needed overtime and a hat trick was recorded. In the marquee series of the weekend, No. 2/2 St. Cloud State picked up a 3-1 win over No. 5/5 North Dakota thanks to two goals from junior forward Mikey Eyssimont and reclaimed sole possession of first place in the NCHC heading into the new year. In another thrilling game, sophomore forward Wade Allison recorded a natural hat trick, his second hat trick of the season, to lead No. 11/10 Western Michigan to a 4-3 comeback win over Miami with Allison capping the hat trick in overtime. For the second straight night, Gold Pan rivals Colorado College and top-ranked Denver played to a stalemate, tying 1-1 after overtime, while DU picked up the extra point in the standings with a 3-on-3 overtime goal. In a battle for first place, No. 2/2 St. Cloud State used a second-period outburst and strong goaltending to down No. 5/5 North Dakota, 3-1, Saturday night at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center to take back sole possession of first place. After a scoreless first frame, junior forward Robby Jackson broke the deadlock early in the middle period to put the Huskies (12-2-1, NCHC) in front. Classmate Mikey Eyssimont then tacked on two goals a minute apart, the latter on the power play, to make it 3-0 midway through the second stanza. UND sophomore forward Cole Smith brought the Fighting Hawks within two, potting a rebound with a second left in the second period, but the Fighting Hawks (10-5-5, /2 NCHC) were unable to find the back of the net in the third period as SCSU freshman netminder Dávid Hrenák totaled 34 saves, including 11 in the final frame. Despite the loss, UND outshot the Huskies heavily, 35-18, but was 0-for-3 on the power play. Both teams are idle until just before the new year as SCSU travels to Princeton Dec , while UND hosts the U.S. U-18 Team in an exhibition on Dec. 30. In perhaps the most thrilling game of the night, sophomore forward Wade Allison recorded a natural hat trick to lead No. 11/10 Western Michigan to a 4-3 comeback win over Miami in overtime Saturday at Lawson Ice Arena. The Broncos (10-8-1, NCHC) actually jumped out to an early 1-0 lead as Allison set up sophomore forward Dawson DiPietro less than a minute into the game. But the RedHawks (8-8-2, NCHC) rattled off three straight goals, with a short-handed tally from junior defenseman Grant Hutton tying the game and senior blue liner Louie Belpedio putting Miami in front in the final minute of the first frame. Sophomore forward Gordie Green then made it 3-1 with a power play goal midway through the middle period. That s when Allison took over, notching his first goal a few minutes later, before tying the game with 4:02 remaining in regulation. He then capped his second hat trick of the season and a career-high four-point night 3:53 into overtime when he took a feed from junior forward Colt Conrad, who had two assists in the game, and skated in on a breakaway for the game-winner and his NCHC-leading 14th goal of the season. WMU outshot Miami, 34-23, in the win, despite going 0-for-5 on the man advantage. WMU is back in action on Thursday, Dec. 28 at Bowling Green, while Miami is off until Dec. 30 when they host an exhibition game against Windsor. totaling 37 saves and DU senior Tanner Jaillet stopping 23 shots, as Denver (9-3-4, /0 NCHC) outshot the Tigers, 38-24, in the game. Both teams step out of conference play next weekend with DU hosting Dartmouth Friday and Saturday, and CC entertaining Arizona State on Saturday and Sunday. Behind three points each from sophomore forward Joey Anderson, freshman defenseman Scott Perunovich and junior forward Peter Krieger, No. 17 Minnesota Duluth earned a 6-2 win at Omaha Saturday night at Baxter Arena to salvage a series split. Anderson put the Bulldogs (8-9-2, NCHC) in front early with a power play goal, but the Mavericks (7-8-1, NCHC) answered later in the first frame with a power play goal of their own. Senior forward Karson Kuhlman made it 2-1 UMD in the first minute of the second stanza, while Krieger used one of his three assists to set up fellow senior Blake Young for the eventual game-winner midway through the middle period. Omaha cut the deficit in half less than two minutes later, but sophomore forward Riley Tufte scored the first of his two goals on the night 32 seconds after UNO to make it 4-2 UMD after 40 minutes. Perunovich and Tufte then tallied again in the final frame to seal the victory as Perunovich and Anderson both had a goal and two helpers in the win. Despite the loss, Omaha outshot the Bulldogs, 34-26, but sophomore goalie Hunter Shepard made 32 saves to collect the win in net for UMD. The Bulldogs return to the ice Dec at the Ledyard Classic, where they ll face Yale and tournament-host Dartmouth, while the Mavericks host No. 19 Union for two games those same days. For the second straight night, Gold Pan rivals Colorado College and top-ranked Denver were unable to decide a winner, as the teams battled to a 1-1 overtime tie Saturday night at the Broadmoor World Arena, while the Pioneers picked up the extra point in the NCHC standings with a 3-on-3 overtime win. The Tigers (7-7-2, /0 NCHC) pounced on a 1-0 lead when junior forward Trevor Gooch knocked in the puck with only 1:57 left in the first frame. The game remained a one-goal game until DU sophomore forward Liam Finlay struck only 17 ticks into the third period to tie the contest and force overtime.
