Those games are two of only four non-conference contests remaining for NCHC teams, with the other two also against a WCHA opponent in No. 8/6 Minnesota State. NCHC teams are a combined against WCHA foes this season. Overall, NCHC teams are a combined in non-conference play this season, with the.662 win percentage second among the six conferences behind only the Big Ten at.688. The NCHC is right on pace to match last year s non-conference record when teams finished a combined in the regular season. (page 9) Seven NCHC teams are ranked in the USCHO.com Poll this week with Miami entering for the first time this season. The seven ranked teams are the most from one conference and the most the NCHC has had ranked at one time. With St. Cloud State falling from the top spot to No. 2, it snapped a streak of 21 straight weeks with an NCHC team atop the poll, while it s only the third week since the start of the season that an NCHC team has not been No. 1 in the USCHO Poll. Half of the NCHC teams have held the No. 1 spot during that span (SCSU, DU, UND and UMD), while only three other NCAA teams have combined. In the Pairwise Ratings, all eight NCHC teams sit in the top 21, including seven in the top 16. (page 9) The NCHC is the only Division I men s conference in which all of its teams have at least nine wins this season and the NCHC is the only conference to have all of its teams with a.500 record or better. Every other conference has at least two teams with a below.500 overall record. The NCHC is home to some of the top-scoring junior classes in the country with five of the top nine residing in the NCHC. The top three scoring junior classes all hail from the NCHC with Denver s third-years leading the way with both 36 goals and 107 points. St. Cloud State is second with 103 points, while Colorado College is third nationally with 89. North Dakota (76 points, 6th) and Omaha (70, t-8th) also rank in the top nine. Four of the top nine offenses in the NCAA play in the NCHC, led by SCSU s 3.89 goals per game, which rank third in the country. Denver (3.55 gpg) and Western Michigan (3.50 gpg) are sixth and seventh, respectively, while Omaha sits ninth in scoring offense (3.40 gpg). The NCHC also has four of the top eight power play units nationally with Miami, Omaha, Denver and St. Cloud State all sitting fourth through eighth in the country, led by the RedHawks at 25.9 percent. (pages 29-30) According to the KRACH on USCHO.com, NCHC teams have played seven of the eight toughest schedules in the country. Minnesota has faced the toughest, but Miami, WMU and Omaha are second through fourth, respectively, while NCHC teams are also in spots five through eight. notes continued on page #NCHCHockey TheNCHC NCHC.tv

Sophomore forward Wade Allison has eight points (4g, 4a) in his last three games, while the Philadelphia Flyers draft pick has 28 points on the season, which tie for seventh in the NCAA. His 15 goals this year tie for the NCHC lead and tie for fourth in the country. Allison has already well surpassed his freshman goal total of 12 from last year. The Cup is named after Julie and Spencer Penrose, who were tremendously successful in the business world and did much of it in Colorado Springs in the early 1900s. The couple made much of their money in the copper industry, which is why the trophy includes copper stars on it. The Penroses also set up the El Pomar Foundation, which still today helps pay for amateur sports and other non-profits, including the NCHC office located in the Copper Building next to the Penrose House on the grounds of the Penrose compound in Colorado Springs. The El Pomar Foundation has also issued grants for the Penrose Cup, medallions for each individual champion and the NCHC s annual Post-Graduate Scholarship. Denver won its first Penrose Cup last season, while North Dakota won back-to-back Penrose Cups in 2015 and 2016 after St. Cloud State won the inaugural season. NCHC Tournament/Frozen Faceoff The NCHC Tournament will consist of four quarterfinal series on the first weekend following regular-season play (March 9-11, 2018). The four higher seeds will host the four lower seeds in a best two-out-of-three format. Seed #1 will host Seed #8, Seed #2 will host Seed #7, Seed #3 will host Seed #6, and Seed #4 will host Seed #5. The winners of the four quarterfinal series will advance to the NCHC Frozen Faceoff at Xcel Energy Center in Saint Paul, Minn. for the two semifinal games on Friday, March 16. 17 Previous Week Round-Up FRIDAY, JAN. 5 On the first night of conference play in 2018, the National Collegiate Hockey Conference (NCHC) certainly showed its depth as both Miami and Omaha began the new year with victories over top-10 NCHC foes, tightening the NCHC standings. The RedHawks used great goaltending and strong special teams play to hold off No. 4/5 Denver for a 4-3 victory in Oxford. In Grand Forks, No. 18 Omaha also received superb play in net and struck on the power play to down No. 6/6 North Dakota, 4-1. In a thrilling, back-and-forth affair, Miami got great goaltending and held on late for a 4-3 win over No. 4/5 Denver Friday night at Steve Cady Arena. The RedHawks (9-8-2, NCHC) grabbed the lead early and never relinquished it as freshman forward Casey Gilling, who had a career-high three points, put Miami on the board only 1:10 into the game on a rebound. The RedHawks doubled their lead early in the second stanza when fellow freshman forward Rourke Russell potted his first career goal, again finishing a rebound. Junior forward Dylan Gambrell put the Pioneers (11-6-4, /0 NCHC) on the board with the first of his two goals on the night later in the period, deflecting in a shot to make it 2-1 after 40 minutes. Gilling added his second goal of the night on the power play early in the third period to regain a two-goal lead. Sophomore forward Henrik Borgström closed the DU deficit to one midway through the third period, but senior defenseman Louie Belpedio answered 27 ticks later with a blast from the point on the power play. Gambrell scored again with an extra attacker but Denver was unable to get the equalizer. Sophomore goalie Ryan Larkin made a season-high 44 saves in the win as DU outshot Miami, The RedHawks went 2-for-4 on the power play and killed all five Pioneer power plays. In front of a national television audience, No. 18 Omaha rolled in to Ralph Engelstad Arena Friday night and left with a 4-1 win over No. 6/6 North Dakota. Junior forward Fredrik Olofsson put the Mavericks (10-8-1, NCHC) in front midway through the first frame, deflecting in a shot from sophomore forward Tristan Keck. In the closing minutes of the opening period, UND junior forward Shane Gersich was hauled down on a breakaway, leading to a penalty shot, which he converted, going five-hole to tie the game. Omaha added a pair of power play goals in the second stanza to grab the lead with senior forward Luke Nogard poking in a rebound, while classmate David Pope s one-timer a few minutes later made it 3-1. Sophomore forward Zach Jordan, who had a two-point night, then took advantage of a UND turnover in the third period, scoring unassisted with a top-shelf snipe to cap the victory. Despite the loss, North Dakota (10-6-5, /2 NCHC) outshot Omaha, 35-21, but junior goalie Evan Weninger made 34 saves to earn the victory in net. UNO went 2-for-4 on the power play and was 3-for-3 on the penalty kill. SATURDAY, JAN. 6 One night after a pair of top-10 teams fell short, all three top-10 National Collegiate Hockey Conference (NCHC) teams picked up convincing wins Saturday night, as both conference series ended in splits and top-ranked St. Cloud State earned an in-state non-conference victory. The Huskies got their head coach back from the World Juniors Championship and rolled to a 5-2 win over No. 10/10 Minnesota at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center, remaining unbeaten at home this year, in the opener of a home-and-home series. No. 6/6 North Dakota bounced back from Friday s loss in a big way Saturday, thumping No. 18 Omaha, 7-0, at Ralph Engelstad Arena to earn a split, as freshman Peter Thome collected his first shutout. In Oxford, No. 4/5 Denver also recovered from a Friday loss, downing Miami, 4-1, to secure a weekend split. Six different Fighting Hawks found the back of the net and freshman goaltender Peter Thome recorded his first career shutout as No. 6/6 North Dakota cruised to a 7-0 win over No. 18 Omaha Saturday night at Ralph Engelstad Arena. With the win, the Fighting Hawks (11-6-5, /2 NCHC) earned a series split and moved into a tie for first place in the NCHC standings with SCSU playing out of conference this weekend. Late in the first period, junior forward Rhett Gardner buried a wrister to get UND rolling, while the Fighting Hawks added three goals in the second stanza, including a power play goal from sophomore defenseman Colton Poolman to start the frame. Senior forward Austin Poganski tacked on two goals in the third period, sandwiched around sophomore defenseman Andrew Peski s first collegiate goal. Poganski (2g, 1a) and Gardner (1g, 2a) both finished with three points, while Thome made 15 saves to earn the whitewash. UND outshot the Mavericks (10-9-1, NCHC), 32-15, in the win. North Dakota steps out of conference next weekend for a home-and-home series with Bemidji State, while Omaha returns home to host Miami. One night after Miami scored early in the game and never trailed again, No. 4/5 Denver returned the favor Saturday, striking in the first minute and not letting the RedHawks back in the contest in a 4-1 win at Steve Cady Arena to pick up a series split. Junior forward Jarid Lukosevicius put the Pioneers (12-6-4, /0 NCHC) in front only 50 seconds into the game and made it 2-0 with a power play tally later in the period, with classmate Dylan Gambrell assisting on both markers. Gambrell then made it ticks into the final frame to cap a three-point night for him. Miami junior forward Kiefer Sherwood got the RedHawks (9-9-2, NCHC) on the board on a delayed penalty, but an empty netter from sophomore forward Henrik Borgström, who also had a three-point game, sealed any hope of a Miami comeback. Denver outshot Miami, 33-25, including 28-5 over the first 40 minutes, while the RedHawks had a 20-5 shot edge in the final frame. Senior goalie Tanner Jaillet earned the win in net with 24 saves, while MU sophomore goalie Ryan Larkin made 29 stops in defeat. The Pioneers are idle until hosting No. 18 Omaha on Jan , while the RedHawks play at Omaha next weekend. After a disappointing pair of ties last weekend at Princeton, top-ranked St. Cloud State got its head coach back behind the bench and roared to a 5-2 victory over No. 10/10 Minnesota Saturday at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center. The Gophers ( ) struck first less than three minutes into the game, but senior forward Blake Winiecki pulled SCSU (13-2-3) even on the power play, deflecting a shot from junior forward Robby Jackson. The Huskies then took control with a pair of second-period markers from junior forward Mikey Eyssimont and freshman forward Easton Brodzinski, with Eyssimont s coming 50 ticks into the stanza. Eyssimont then added his second tally of the night early in the third period to make it 4-1, while he finished with three points. Minnesota made it a two-goal game Jan. 8-14, 2018 NCHCHockey.com NCHC.tv 17

18 Previous Week Round-Up midway through the final frame, but sophomore defenseman Jack Ahcan, who had two points in the win, finished a rebound a few minutes later to close out the victory. The Huskies outshot the Gophers, 34-23, with junior Jeff Smith making 21 saves to earn the win in net. SUNDAY, JAN. 7 One night after rolling to a 5-2 win on home ice, No. 1/2 St. Cloud State couldn t carry its offense down the road, falling at No. 10/10 Minnesota Sunday night, 2-0, at 3M Arena at Mariucci as the rivals split their non-conference home-and-home series. Despite the Huskies (13-3-3) outshooting the Gophers ( ), 34-21, Minnesota was able to snap its five-game losing streak against SCSU. St. Cloud State appeared to score late in the second period on a snipe by junior forward Mikey Eyssimont, but the goal was overturned after review and waved off for too many men on the ice. Entering the third period scoreless, Darian Romanko intercepted a pass in the Huskies zone and buried a snipe off the turnover for the unassisted game-winner 3:10 into the final frame. SCSU continued to push, outshooting Minnesota, 15-5, over the final 20 minutes, but the Huskies couldn t beat Mat Robson, who totaled 34 saves to earn the shutout in net. Freshman David Hrenak made 19 saves in defeat. The Gophers sealed the game with an empty-net goal in the final minute. The teams went a combined 0-for-5 on the power play. St. Cloud State returns to NCHC play next weekend, hosting No. 12/12 Western Michigan. #NCHCHockey Jan. 8-14, 2018
