3 COLLEGE HOCKEY SHOWCASE RECAP MSU marked the Thanksgiving holiday by taking a pair of games from Western Collegiate Hockey Association rivals in the annual College Hockey Showcase. The wins mark the first Showcase sweep for the Spartans since On Sunday, Damon Whitten (Brighton, Mich.) and John Nail (Brampton, Ont.) each scored two goals and Sean Patchell (Moonstone, Ont.) and Brad Fast (Fort St. John, B.C.) each tallied three assists as Michigan State defeated Wisconsin, 6-2, at the Kohl Center in Madison. The Spartans extended their unbeaten streak to ten (9-0-1) while the Badgers lost for the eighth time in nine games. Whitten got the Spartans off to a quick start when he took a feed from Andrew Hutchinson (Rochester Hills, Mich.) in the near circle and tucked a wrist shot between Wisconsin netminder Graham Melanson and the near post 66 seconds into the game. The lead was short-lived, however, as the Badgers tallied a pair of goals 14 seconds apart and just 1:11 after Whitten s marker. Andy Wheeler evened the score after picking up a Kent Davyduke shot that hit traffic in front of the Spartan net and banging the rebound past MSU netminder Ryan Miller (East Lansing, Mich.) at 2:15. Erik Jensen gave Wisconsin the lead at 2:29 when he fired a shallow-angle shot past Miller and into the Spartan net. Whitten notched his second goal of the period during the Spartans first power-play opportunity of the afternoon. The senior wing appeared to be making a centering pass to Jeremy Jackson (Langley, B.C.), who was breaking toward the Badger net on the near side. Whitten s fluttering pass went on goal and snuck into a narrow opening between Melanson and the far post at 9:55. MSU regained the lead at 15:40 of the first period when Nail, breaking into the slot, was fed by Patchell, who was stationed on the near wall, and beat Melanson low for his third goal of the season. The Spartans scored the only goals of the second period. John-Michael Liles (Zionsville, Ind.) notched his third marker of the season when his blast from the far point on MSU s second power-play opportunity of the game eluded Melanson at 8:06. Adam Hall (Kalamazoo, Mich.) expanded the Spartan edge to 5-2 on a nifty play at 16:31. Jeremy Jackson, skating into the zone one-on-four on the near wall, broke to the net and hit Hall with a backhand pass. Hall, breaking in from the bench on the far side, poked the puck past Melanson before being hauled down by a Badger defender. Nail added the sixth MSU goal when he redirected a pass from Fast past Wisconsin goaltender Scott Kabatoff at 14:20. Miller, who has allowed two or fewer goals in each of his last 12 starts, made 32 saves en route to his 10th win of the year. Melanson stopped 21 shots in two periods of work. Kabatoff worked the third period and turned aside three MSU shots. On Friday, Brian Maloney (Bassano, Alta.) scored a power-play goal with 1:37 left in regulation as the Spartans edged Minnesota, 3-2, in a battle of top-ranked teams at Mariucci Arena Friday. The Spartans got a power-play chance with 2:33 left in the third period when Minnesota s Dylan Mills was whistled for slashing Jeremy Jackson. Maloney, stationed in the near faceoff circle, netted the game-winner off a pass from Fast, firing a wrist shot that beat Golden Gopher goaltender Adam Hauser on his short side. Minnesota opened the scoring with the lone first-period goal, taking advantage of a Spartan defensive breakdown. The Golden Gophers Matt Leimbek picked the puck up behind the MSU net and passed to teammate Stuart Senden, who skated into the near faceoff circle and fired a low shot past Miller for his first goal of the season at 13:36. Neither team could muster a goal in a tight-checking second stanza, but the Spartans evened the score 3:20 into the third period on a goal by Steve Clark (Missisauga, Ont.). The marker was made possible by MSU defenseman Jon Insana (New Baltimore, Mich.), who held the offensive zone at the near point on a Gopher clearing attempt. Hauser made the save on Insana s shot, but an uncontested Clark picked up the loose puck in the slot and easily scored his second goal of the year. Jackson extended his point streak to five games and gave MSU a 2-1 edge with a nifty one-on-one move at 4:06 of the third period. The freshman broke into the Minnesota zone on the far side, sliced toward the slot and wristed the puck past sprawling Golden Gopher goaltender Adam Hauser. The Spartans had a prime opportunity to add an insurance goal when Minnesota s Erik Westrum went into the penalty box at with 7:41 left in the third frame for high-sticking. The Golden Gophers capitalized, however, as Aaron Miskovich got behind the Spartan defense on a clearing attempt and beat Miller top-shelf 17 seconds into the MSU power play to even the score at two apiece. Miller made 25 saves en route to the victory. Hauser made 28 stops for Minnesota, which saw its seven-game unbeaten streak come to an end. Wins over Minnesota and Wisconsin not only gave MSU its first College Hockey Showcase sweep since 1997, but also marked the first time since that the Spartans won on the Gophers and Badgers home ice in the same season. Friday s MSU win at Minnesota snapped a 13-game losing streak against the Golden Gophers in Minneapolis that dated back to Feb. 7, The Spartans scored nine goals in their two Showcase games, the most markers by a team in the Showcase series since Michigan tallied 11 times in MSU s six goals against Wisconsin is the third-highest single-game total in Showcase play. Michigan scored eight against the Badgers in 1996 and lit the lamp seven times vs. Bucky in 1994 and The Spartan senior class closed Showcase play with a overall record, including series sweeps in 1997 and MSU completed November with a mark, posting its first undefeated record in the eleventh month since the season, when the Spartans were The Spartans are on the road so far this season. It s the team s longest road winning streak since MSU reeled off eight straight away from home between Oct. 2, 1995-Jan. 27, MSU has managed three or more goals in five of its last six games. The College Hockey Showcase games marked the first time this season that Spartan netminder Ryan Miller allowed two or more goals in back-to-back games. Miller, however, has not given up more than two markers in 11 straight games dating back to MSU s season-opening 5-4 win over Alaska Anchorage. Adam Hall notched his 75th career point with an assist on Brian Maloney s game-winning goal Friday at Minnesota.

5 Rustyn Dolyny failed to score a point in Friday s game at Minnesota, bringing and end to his career-high eight-game scoring streak. Dolyny recovered to tally a pair of assists vs. Wisconsin on Sunday. Damon Whitten scored a goal 66 seconds into the first period of Sunday s game at Wisconsin, marking the fourth time in five games the Spartans have got on the scoreboard in the first three minutes of the third period. TUESDAY S MSU-LAKE SUPERIOR STATE RECAP Brian Maloney scored a goal and added two assists and Adam Hall and Jeremy Jackson each notched a goal and an assist as Michigan State eased past Lake Superior State, 5-0, at Munn Ice Arena on Tuesday. For the third time in as many games, the Spartans scored a goal in the first three minutes of the first period. On Tuesday, it was Andrew Bogle s (Calgary, Alta.) turn to get MSU out of the gate early. Bogle dumped the puck into the Laker zone, intending for linemate Steve Jackson (Bloomfield Hills, Mich.) to chase it down. The puck took a strange bounce in the far corner, however, and caromed back into the slot where Bogle picked it up and fired it past LSSU netminder Jayme Platt at 1:39. The rest of the first period and most of the second frame was a tight-checking affair, but MSU broke the game open with a pair of goals in the last five-plus minutes of the middle stanza. Brad Fast doubled the Spartan advantage at 14:39 when he walked in from his position on the point and made a nifty deke on Platt in the low slot to score his first goal of the year. Maloney extended the MSU edge a little more than two minutes later when, on a Spartan five-on-three power play, he corralled a Rustyn Dolyny (Fort Frances, Ont.) blast that glanced off Hall. Maloney calmly flipped the puck into a near-empty net for his fourth goal of the season at 16:51. Jeremy Jackson gave the Spartans a four-goal edge when he spun away from his defender in the slot and took a pass from Maloney, who was stationed behind the Laker net, and put the puck low to Platt s stick side and into the net for his fifth goal of the season 48 seconds into the third period. Maloney notched his second helper of the night at 9:05, when he won a battle for a loose puck in the near corner of the MSU offensive zone and found Hall for his seventh tally of the year. Ryan Miller stopped all 19 shots he faced en route to his 10th career shutout. Platt made 38 saves on 43 shots for Lake Superior State. SENIOR SALUTE Sunday was a banner day for MSU seniors. Four of the team s five veteran skaters notched two or more points against Wisconsin Sean Patchell (0-3--3), John Nail (2-0--2), Damon Whitten (2-0--2) and Rustyn Dolyny (0-2--2). Andrew Bogle did not score but had a +2 plus-minus rating on the afternoon. J.J. IS DYN-O-MITE Freshman center Jeremy Jackson extended his point streak to six games with a goal and an assist in Tuesday s win over Lake Superior State, a tally in Friday s game at Minnesota and a pair of helpers against Wisconsin Sunday. The Langley, B.C., product has in his last six contests and, with through 13 games, leads the team in scoring and is second among CCHA rookies in points. Jackson did see his four-game goal streak come to an end vs. Wisconsin. FAST BREAK MSU sophomore defenseman Brad Fast is in the midst of a career-best three-game point streak. The Fort St. John, B.C., native, scored his first goal of the season vs. Lake Superior State on Nov. 21, set up Brian Maloney s game-winning goal at Minnesota on Friday and recorded three assists for the second time this season in Sunday s game against Wisconsin. Fast was over the last three games and earned CCHA Defensive Player of the Week honors for his efforts. Fast leads Spartan rearguards in scoring with He had one assist through MSU s first eight games and is in the Spartans last five contests. HUTCH IS MUCH Junior defenseman Andrew Hutchinson, normally a slow starter, has through 13 games this season. He is during that span. The team s leading goal scorer has also found the back of the net in three of his last four outings. KILLING ME SOFTLY MSU has killed 17 straight opponent power plays and 35 of 36 opponent man advantages. On Friday, the Spartans successfully held Minnesota scoreless on two power plays. The Golden Gophers entered the game with a.348 success rate with the man advantage. Incidentally, MSU has allowed power-play goals in four games this season and were victorious in all four of those contests. CLUSTER BUSTER With victories over Michigan and Lake Superior State and a series sweep of Northern Michigan, MSU s record in the so-called CCHA super cluster stands at a perfect with eight games remaining. The cluster scheduling format puts CCHA teams together in groups of four. Teams play each member of their cluster four times during the regular season and face non-cluster teams twice during the year. The super cluster features the top four teams in last year s CCHA regular-season standings, including the conference s regular-season and playoff champions (Michigan and Michigan State, respectively.) SPARTANS REMAIN ATOP USCHO POLL For the second time in three weeks, there is a split decision regarding the nation s top college hockey team. Michigan State, the top team in both the USA Today/American Hockey Magazine and U.S. College Hockey Online polls last week, maintained its position in this week s USCHO rankings, released Nov. 20. In this week s USA Today poll, however, Minnesota jumped from sixth to assume the top spot, bumping the Spartans down to second. MSU held onto first place in USCHO rankings over Minnesota by a mere four points, North Dakota, Boston College and New Hampshire round out the top five in that poll. The Golden Gophers have a 19-vote edge in the USA Today rankings with Boston College, North Dakota and New Hampshire holding down the three-through-five spots. SPARTANS IN THE SHOW 15 Michigan State alums are listed on National Hockey League rosters as of today.
