Jammer scoring Based on the WFTDA ruleset as of Eligibility to score Only the Jammer from each team is able to score points. 7.0 In order to make a legal pass on another player, the Jammer must meet certain criteria. Wearing the Jammer helmet cover On their helmet, with the stars clearly visible Be upright Standing or skating with one or both skates touching the ground [1][2] No penalties Which are outstanding or unserved. No points can be earned until returning to the track after serving the penalty On a Scoring Pass Having completed their Initial Pass [3] (in order to earn points) Be in-bounds Neither skate is allowed to touch outside of the track boundary [1] Except if an un-passed Blocker skates clockwise past the downed Jammer [2] Passes while airborne are not counted unless the Jammer lands in-bounds on 1 or both skates [3] With the exception of Jammer lap points, which may be earned on the Initial Pass as well as any Scoring Pass 7.1.2
2. Passing another player To pass another player means the Jammer advances ahead of that player according to derby direction (counter-clockwise). Passive passes where a player travels clockwise past the Jammer are counted as passes The Jammer may choose to go back behind and re-pass a skater if they were not eligible to earn a pass on their first attempt Passes are measured At a 90 angle to the inside track boundary Not passed Jammer has not crossed the 90 line relative to the other skater Passed Jammer has crossed at a 90 angle relative to the other skater The Jammer s hips Must go beyond the hips of the other skater to be considered a pass 2.4.3
3. Initial Pass No points can be scored on a Jammer s Initial Pass through the pack [4][5] Passes are counted towards earning the Lead Jammer status Lead Jammer status Is awarded immediately to the first eligible Jammer [6] who passes the foremost in-play Blocker All in-play Blockers Initial Pass ends Must be passed legally in order to remain eligible to earn Lead Once the Jammer leaves the front of the Engagement Zone Pass Pass Pass Pass Pass Out-of-play Blockers ahead of the Engagement Zone do not need to be passed ft The Pack Engagement Zone 10.0 [4] However Jammer lap points may still be earned (see Jammer lap points ) [5] In the event of a score tie, one or more Overtime Jams may be played until a winner is determined. In an Overtime Jam, no Lead Jammer is allocated, and Jammers may score on the Initial Pass as well as subsequent passes [6] If both Jammers are eligible to earn Lead and simultaneously pass the foremost Blocker, Lead Jammer status is awarded to whichever Jammer is foremost or in-front
4. Scoring Pass Points may be earned on the Jammer s second pass through the pack, and then again for every subsequent pass for the remainder of that Jam Legal pass Points are scored for any legal pass on an opposing Blocker, including skaters who are: Down Out-of-bounds temporarily Out-of-play point per Blocker Can be earned on a single pass - up to a maximum of 4 points Each legal pass On an opposing Blocker scores 1 point No-pass, No-penalty Some passes are not punishable, but do not earn points: Cutting-track on a downed opponent Failed apex jumps Not wearing the Jammer helmet cover Passing an opponent whilst down The Jammer may opt to go back and re-pass legally in order to earn points in these instances.
5. Ending a pass Each Scoring Pass ends when the Jammer leaves the front of the Engagement zone As soon as one Pass ends, the next Pass begins. Upon leaving the Engagement zone From the front, the pass is ended and the next pass begins No more points can be earned for a pass once it has ended In a no-pack scenario There is no defined Engagement zone, therefore the pass is ended when foremost Blocker is passed When the Jam ends The pass ends with the Jam. The Jam ends exactly on the fourth note of the first set of whistles When a pass has ended Points are automatically awarded for any out-of-play Blockers ahead of the Engagement Zone, who had not already been scored upon in that pass
6. Returning to a previous pass After beginning the next pass, a Jammer can be returned to the previous pass if the pack catches up or overtakes them The Jammer is not able to score while in the previous pass, and must leave the Engagement zone at the front of the pack to resume their next Scoring Pass If the pack overtakes the Jammer The Jammer is returned to the previous pass The Jammer can only be returned by 1 pass, no matter how many times they are lapped by the pack Upon leaving the Enagement zone From the front, the Jammer resumes their next Scoring Pass and is eligible to earn points again No points can be scored On any Blockers while the Jammer is back on their previous pass. Including any Blockers who had not been scored upon originallty during that pass
7. Jammer lap points Each time a Jammer completely laps the opposing Jammer while both are on the track, 1 point is scored Jammer lap points are counted separately from Scoring Passes [7] point is awarded Immediately upon passing the opposing Jammer, having lapped the Jammer completely Jam refs communicate Lap points by tapping their helmet to indicate that their Jammer has been lapped. The sound of the tap is to alert the opposing Jam ref and ensure the point is counted. 1 further point is awarded WFTDA Official Hand Signals For each subsequent time that the opposing Jammer is lapped completely [7] Scoring a lap point on the opposing Jammer prevents a NOTT point from being scored against that Jammer within the same Scoring Pass. Equally, scoring a NOTT point on an opposing Jammer prevents the first lap point being scored on that Jammer within the same Scoring Pass (however subsequent lap points may still be awarded)
8. Apex jumps Jammers can earn points for opposing players they pass while jumping However, points are not awarded unless the jump is completed legally. Upon starting the jump The skater must take off while still in-bounds Upon landing the jump The skater must land on 1 or both skates, in-bounds, and before the Jam ends If the skater lands out-of-bounds, or on anything other than a skate, any passes or points are voided Passes whilst airbourne Are counted, however no points are awarded until the jump has been legally completed Contact whilst airbourne Which forces an opponent out of their established position is illegal and may earn a penalty for misconduct If any penalty is assessed to the Jammer during the jump, any points or passes are not awarded.
9. Penalties As soon as a Jammer is assessed [8] for a penalty, they can no longer score points until that penalty is served When a Jammer is assessed For a penalty, the current pass is paused points are retained, but no more points can be earned until the penalty is served point Upon receiving a penalty Lead Jammer status, or eligibility to earn Lead, is forfeited Upon returning to the track Immediately the Jammer scores a point for every un-passed Blocker in the penalty box, if they entered while the Jammer was serving their own penalty Points are also awarded for any un-passed skaters who are behind the Engagement Zone when the Jammer re-enters the track [9] After serving the penalty The Jammer resumes the pass they were on prior to the penalty The current pass is unpaused upon re-entering the track, the Jammer can once again earn points for this pass Blockers who had been scored upon cannot be scored upon again Blockers who had NOT been scored upon can be scored upon as normal [8] Skaters are considered to have been Assessed a penalty (and are therefore In the box ) as soon as the action warranting a penalty is performed [9] With the exception of a no-pack scenario, when there is no Engagement Zone. Therefore the Jammer is obliged to re-enter the track behind ALL Blockers
10. Scoring NOTT points On each pass, after scoring the 1st point on a Blocker, the Jammer automatically picks up extra points for any opponents [10] who are unavailable for normal scoring NOTT stands for Not-on-the-track and is applicable in the following scenarios: Skaters on-track but considered in the penalty box - which is as soon as they perform the action being penalised Skaters who did not participate in the Jam [12], or were directed to Return to the bench due to a Jam-start infraction Skaters travelling to or from the penalty box Expelled skaters, or fielded skaters who have quit the game during the Jam Skaters seated or standing in the penalty box Skaters addressing an equipment failure, if they are obliged to leave the Jam in progress, or if it is determined they have removed themselves from play Skaters returning to the track from the penalty box behind the Jammer, and who are still behind the Jammer [11] Injured skaters, if they are obliged to leave the Jam in progress, or if it is determined they have removed themselves from play [10] Including the opposing Jammer. However, NOTT points scored on the Jammer are mutually exclusive with Jammer lap points. If a NOTT point is scored on a Jammer, the first lap point is not counted (subsequent lap points within the same pass may still count) [11] If the re-entering skater skates ahead of the Jammer before the 1st point is scored, then they are no longer included as a NOTT point [12] Return to the bench instruction may be issued on a skater due to, for example, being positioned out-of-bounds on the Jam-start whistle
11. Not a NOTT point Despite being referred to as Not-on-the-track, not all opponents who are off-track are included as a NOTT point. Opponents who are temporarily out-of-bounds or straddling are not counted as NOTT points and must be passed normally in order to receive a point. This includes skaters who are legally [13] off-track, for example due to: Avoiding a downed skater or obstacle An injury or ailment [14] Addressing a minor equipment malfunction [14] Retrieving a helmet cover which has fallen out-ofbounds [15] Receiving or executing a block Straddling the track boundary [13] Leaving the track intentionally and without a legal reason may constitute a skating out-of-bounds penalty - for which a penalty should be assessed and the perpetrating skater scored upon as a NOTT point [14] However, once it has been determined that the skater has removed themselves from the play, they are included as a NOTT point until they return to play [15] If they are permitted to do so; the Jammer and the pivot are the only players permitted to retrieve a fallen helmet cover 2.6.5
12. Scoring after a Star Pass During a Jam, a Jammer may choose to remove their helmet cover with the intention of hiding their status as Jammer (a Star Stash ), or passing the helmet cover and Jammer status to their team s Pivot (a Star Pass ) Jammer is eligible to score When they are wearing the helmet cover with both stars visible. The Jammer is considered to be Active while in this state Jammer cannot score If the Jammer helmet cover is removed for any reason during a jam. The Jammer becomes Inactive until the helmet cover is replaced and visible [16] Jammer status is transferred From the Jammer to the Pivot, by handing them the helmet cover. This is known as a Star Pass Following a Star Pass The original Jammer becomes a Blocker; the Pivot becomes the new Jammer for the rest of the Jam [17][18] The new Jammer Continues the same Pass [19] as the original Jammer, and can score points as soon as they are eligible and Active [16] If Jammer intentionally removes the helmet cover, they instantly lose Lead Jammer status (or eligibility to earn Lead) for the remainder of the Jam - even if they put the helmet cover back on. If, however, the helmet cover is accidentally removed, or removed by an opponent, it can be replaced in order to regain Lead/eligibility to earn Lead [17] Jammer status is transferred only if the Star Pass was performed legally. If a Star Pass is not completed legally (for example the helmet cover is thrown instead of passed handto-hand) the skaters retain their original Jammer and Pivot roles until a legal Star Pass is performed [18] Jammer status cannot be transferred from the new Jammer back to the original Jammer once a Star Pass is complete. This is because only the Pivot may receive the Star - the original Jammer does not become Pivot after a Star Pass, but becomes a normal Blocker [19] Meaning that any players who have been scored upon by the original Jammer cannot be scored upon again by the new Jammer. Any un-passed players are eligible to be scored upon by the new Jammer, assuming all usual eligibility criteria are met.
13. Recording the score Keeping a record of the Jammer s scores is the responsibility of several officials, including the Jammer Referees, the Scorekeepers, and the Scoreboard Operator. Each team is assigned A Jammer Referee and a Scorekeeper, who track the score for that team s Jammer. Referees switch teams at the end a period During each Pass The Jammer Referee keeps a note of how many points have been earned WFTDA Officiating Standardized Practices When the Pass ends The Jammer Referee signals the number of points to the Scorekeeper The Scorekeeper records The number of points on the official paperwork, and verbally communicates this to the Scoreboard Operator WFTDA Officiating Standardized Practices Black White Period 1 Jam 9 17:09 00:49 The Scoreboard Operator Updates the official scoreboard every pass, or at the end of each Jam WFTDA Officiating Standardized Practices In-between Jams Scorekeeper and Scoreboard Operator confirm that the recorded score is accurate. Any changes to the recorded score must be corrected before the end of the next Jam
