8 A Message from Your Executive Director Barbette I. Ishii, CAE Welcome to the 90th Anniversary edition of the BCEA Member Directory. In this issue we will celebrate our past while looking towards our future. We find ourselves constantly evolving to keep up with an ever-changing industry in an ever-changing world. Your board of directors work diligently to serve you and I am thankful to all those that have served in the past and continue to serve into the future. Without their efforts, we would not be the organization that we are today. One membership benefit that is important to the BCEA are the thousands of dollars in scholarships we offer every year to all our members in all aspects of the electrical industry. Our scholarship funds are supported through the revenue of our social events. Know that our networking events are fundamentally building you, building others, and most importantly, building success for everyone. We recognized that the tradeshow, once popular and well attended, was losing ground and needed to become something different, something more relevant. We envisioned a future where people came to our learning expo to be together, to discuss the issues impacting our industry and to learn. We created such a learning expo and will continue to deliver that to you this upcoming year. Our focus on education continues throughout the year as we strive to offer a variety of classes that help support the electrical industry and use the space that we created for this purpose. The classroom of the BCEA is your classroom. Learn how our education services can serve you and your business. We are excited to have launched our new mobile-friendly website that we believe will help us communicate more effectively with you, our members. We want to engage you in our conversations that address your concerns. We felt it was time to update our look and feel as we look to create participation with not only our valued long-time members, but our new Under 40 members as well. Technically savvy and plugged in, this demographic demands the connectivity of a well done website. Our goals for all our members over the upcoming years are simple: Connect, Learn, Engage. We believe you won t be disappointed with the results. The BCEA team of our staff and dedicated volunteers are here to serve you. Thank you for the opportunity to do so!v 8 BCEA 2014

10 A Message from Your Chair Kelly Hanson I am excited about my new appointment as chair of the board of directors of the BCEA. Our members have seen many changes over the years, and as we look to gain integrity to be the voice of the entire electrical industry, we will focus on you, our members, to ensure the participation we need in order to make this happen. Having been in the electrical industry for over 25 years now, I see the great opportunity for our young people to build a long and rewarding career in this important industry. It started off as an accident for me, as I found out about a job at an electrical wholesaler through my mother. I recognized the value of the electrical industry and knew I had found something good. It hasn t always been easy, yet the struggles are well worth the effort. We don t become executives overnight. We achieve success through discipline, integrity and service to others. It is a constant state of learning and growing, particularly as things change so quickly. The BCEA has provided me with friends and mentorship. It s exciting to see the next generation of leaders coming into the BCEA and I am delighted to serve as chair during the inaugural year of the U40 (Under 40) group. You will see us focus on education this year and in the years to come, as we are committed to creating excellence in the people involved in the electrical industry. One of my key goals this year is to continue the hard work of those that have served before me as chair, to be the voice of the electrical industry. We will continue to build relationships with internal and external stakeholders to gather and share the information you need to make good business decisions. We will continue to work with government legislators to advocate on your behalf on laws that impact your ability to conduct business well. I am indebted to those that have served before me. Thank you, all of you who have served as chair, for your dedication and commitment to the well-being of our industry. Thank you to Barbette Ishii, who has served faithfully for over 20 years. Thank you also to the team of people at the BCEA who make our work as volunteers possible. I look forward to an exciting year serving as your chair. v 10 BCEA 2014

12 A Message from Your Past-Chair Wade Emmons When I was originally asked to be part of the BCEA board I did not know what to expect, but these last five years on the board have been an honor and a privilege. This last year as chair has been the fastest and most rewarding year yet. We should all be proud of our industry, and this association. This year we saw many changes both within the electrical industry and the BCEA. A few members are now part of the alumni club due to some well-deserved retirements, and we wish them all the best. The new Anti-Spam legislation has come into effect, and I know that that the BCEA will continue to assist in educating our industry on this evolving topic to keep us all abreast of what is to come, just as it did for the Light Recycle program a few years ago. Thanks to the BCEA, we are focusing on our future, your future. With a big focus on the younger generation, we want to build long-lasting viability for generations to come. Our education modules and courses are developing, and we are creating new programs for the U40 (under 40) group. Now that the BCEA office has been renovated, we have a secure venue for future courses that may not have been able to run in the past. The BCEA is also offering training around the province, so look for a course near you! We hope that by working with the youth of today, they will see what a rewarding industry we have. I would like to say a special thank you to Barbette Ishii, and our newest executive assistant, Alicia Penny, for your hard work, professionalism, and dedication to making the BCEA what it is today. I would also like to thank all the board members and committee members for your hard work, and volunteering your time with the BCEA. Thank you for your support this past year. In closing, I would like to welcome our incoming chair, Kelly Hanson, and I am confident he will do an excellent job for v 12 BCEA 2014

17 Bursary Sponsorship Program The BC Electrical Association has been very active in promoting careers in the electrical industry. Since the inception of the Scholarship and Bursary program we have awarded over $400,000. Members take pride in the fact that we support the future generations of our business, and feedback indicated that members wanted to support students directly furthering their education within the electrical industry. The BCEA Bursary Program supports students pursuing a career in electrical, marketing, electrical engineering and business. 19 90 Years BCEA Celebrating of Powerful Service By Sue Pekonen Electricity was first introduced into B.C. in 1883 by Robert McMicking incorporating the Victoria Electric Illuminating Company. In 1898, financiers Robert Horne-Payne and Frank Barnard raised money from investors in England to build the West Coast s first hydro-electric plant near Victoria. 1 And so it all began. The BCEA is celebrating 90 years of serving the electrical services industry and we thought it would be great to celebrate our past as we look forward to an exciting future. From where we came: Roaring Twenties In 1924, a group of visionary leaders that provided electrical services to the province of British Columbia came together to form the Electrical Services League (ESL), a move that intended to promote the use of electricity throughout the province and ensure industry standards were practiced. The specific uses that the league promoted in the home were the electric range and the use of outlets. For commercial uses they created a campaign that promoted electric- ELECTRIC PRODUCTS LTD Office: Toll free CODE WESTERN CANADA S SOURCE FOR ELECTRICAL ENCLOSURES & CABLE TRAY CABLE TRAY CUSTOM FABRICATION ENCLOSURES New 43,000 sq foot manufacturing facility Expanded Kiosk manufacturing capabilities Peaked Tray Cover (made to fit any existing tray) B.C. s fastest Cable Tray deliveries 548 NICOLA PLACE, PORT COQUITLAM, BC V3B 0K4 OFFICE: TOLL FREE CODE SALES@CODEELECTRIC.COM 90 th Anniversary Directory 19

They also worked to have the Narrows Bridge (1925) and Lawn Bowling Green in Stanley Park lit. 2 On the education front, the league promoted Red Seal certification for electricians. Dirty thirties Even in the depression years, the ESL stayed the course; they stuck together and pulled through some very lean years. In 1934, the first PNE Show Home ever featured an Electric Range supplied by Eaton s department store. 3 PATTON & COOKE has 50+ years experience designing and manufacturing such industry staples as our full range of substation connectors, multi-point combination junctions, and cable accessories. Toll Free: info@pattonandcooke.com Post-war growth: 1940s and 50s Recognizing that much had changed, in the face of the war and to support the efforts of Canada to normalize itself after such a traumatic and disruptive event, the league put together a committee to study post-war plans. In an effort to create better programs and services, the league needed money and conducted its first membership drive in order to raise the funds and implement its programs. It began to look at raising the standards of electrical services by putting contractor registration and licensing on the table for discussion. In the 1940s the league also opened offices on Vancouver Island. 4 Generating the future: 1960s & 70s Along with the post-war economic and baby booms, large energy projects were announced across North America to supply the increasing needs of factories, businesses and the newly formed suburbs filled with single-family homes. 21 Among the major projects announced in B.C. were the W.A.C. Bennett Dam, G.M. Shrum Generating Station and the Peace Canyon Dam. A new Crown corporation, now known as BC Hydro, was created through the consolidation of BC Electric and the BC Power Commission in order to build and sustain these ambitious projects. 5 In order to promote the use of electric heating in houses, the ESL created the Medallion Certified Homes Program. The league also worked to promote the use of electric heating in commercial, industrial and academic buildings. With these promotions being highly successful, the league ensured that health and safety standards were met with the introduction of the Electrical Heat Certification program. This caused the Electrical Heating Association to amalgamate with the Electrical Services League and membership numbers increased as a result. Trade shows were a popular and effective way of conducting business during this time and the ESL introduced their tradeshows to generate revenue and further support the work of the league and to create success for the members through networking opportunities. In June 1970, we saw the official opening of the Seven Mile Project. Hands-on computer training was offered and the league promoted all levels of Gold Seal certification. Along with more robust education programs, the league started conducting regional trade shows to increase their reach of business to business opportunities for members. One of the key activities for the league was to intervene in the natural gas pipeline project that was being proposed during the 1980s. With influential leaders within the league, the voice of the industry was heard loud and clear, thus establishing the advocacy efforts of the league on members behalf. The league moved its offices out of BC Hydro and into Gough Electric. 6 What s in a name? The 1990s In 1990 the league made a big change for itself and took on a new name and logo; the Electrical Services League thus became known as the BC Electrical Association (BCEA). An executive director was hired and the promotion of the programs and services of the association became the key to success. Education continued to be a focus and the course offerings were expanded to include Basic Electricity and Sales and Marketing. BCEA also partnered with the Power Smart program to hold Product Knowledge Days around the province. In 1997 they moved to their current location in Burnaby. At the beginning of the new millennium, the BCEA saw the corporate membership grow to over 150 members, from 87, in the early 90s. In its education portfolio, the BCEA continued to offer its programs throughout the province and a bursary program was introduced to develop and enhance the scholarship and endowment programs. At that time, it was decided that all revenue raised through the networking events would go towards supporting the bursary, scholarship and endowment funds. In the words of John Baron, past chair (2007) and current treasurer, Shifting emphasis to education has been a big driver through our programs and scholarships and bursaries. After all, who can live without electricity? And the people you meet and become friends with are terrific.... and beyond! As the BCEA moves ahead into its next 90 years of service, it looks forward to becoming the voice of advocacy for the members of the BCEA. We are working hard to move our advocacy position to becoming a stronger voice in the electrical and related construction sectors of our market, said Baron. With the effectiveness of trade shows dwindling and the increased need to build relationships differently, the BCEA continues to adjust its ways of being to suit the members. Giving back to the industry is a critical byproduct recognized by our colleagues throughout the industry. Sharing best practices with these outstanding individuals on our board and in the industry has helped everyone s businesses and relationships, noted Baron. Jang added, BCEA is a wonderful association and they ve done a good job of bringing all the people involved in the electrical services industry together. THANK YOU TO OUR DEDICATED VOLUNTEERS The BCEA would not be the long-standing organization that it is without the contributions of all the people who have served faithfully and loyally for the past 90 years. There are hundreds of dedicated volunteers who have attended many meetings, drove many miles and set up and took down more tables than they could count. They contributed their leadership and knowledge for the success of the organization. Without them, there would not be 90 years to celebrate. Thank you, everyone.
