3 All Female Crew Set to Officiate PJHL Game This Weekend It was the vision of the late Jason Mercer years ago to have the first all female officiating crew work a game in the Prairie Junior Hockey League (PJHL). That vision is now becoming a reality under the direction of the current Referee-In-Chief - Dallas Davison and President of the league - Mike Zambon. Mercer served as the Referee-In-Chief of the PJHL for several seasons and was a leader in the province s Referee Division. He saw the potential of the female officials in Saskatchewan and new that one day this could happen. That time is now! The game will take place Sunday, December 3 at 5pm at the Rod Hamm Arena in Saskatoon between the Saskatoon Quakers and Regina Silver Foxes. The four-official crew will include Cianna Lieffers of Cudworth, Michelle Stapleton of Moose Jaw, Jessica Coleman of Brandtford, Ont. and Alex Clarke of Drake. The officials have all since relocated in Saskatchewan and have proved to be among the top elite female officials within the province. I am proud to be a part of the Saskatchewan Officials Development Model as the Director of Officials of the Prairie Junior Hockey League, stated Davison. These officials working this weekend and many others are a just a snapshot of our increasing development standards and rising National and International assignments for SHA officials. I am very proud to have these officials associated with the PJHL as they work in various high level leagues including our Prairie Junior Hockey League. Lieffers, who currently resides in Humboldt, after moving from Saskatoon has been an official for nine seasons. She is a current level 4 official, who recently attended the Hockey Canada Level 5/6 Camp in Moncton, NB last weekend. Lieffers has earned several provincial, national and international championship assignments during her career as a referee including the IIHF Olympic Pre-Qualifying Tournament Group J in Mexico City last year. 4 Stapleton, who now lives in Saskatoon, has a similar resume, as she is a Level 5 official, the highest level a female official can achieve in the Hockey Canada structure. Stapleton has been officiating for 15 seasons and has also earned provincial, national and international assignments as a referee, which featured trips to Almaty, Kazakhston and Budapest, Hungary for the 2017 Winter Universiade Game and 2017 IIHF U18 Women s World Championship Div. I Group A Tournament. Coleman, who will serve as one of the two linesmen for Sunday s game, moved from Ontario to the Battlefords and has been officiating for 17 seasons. She recently attended the SHA s Level 4/5 camp this season and has worked provincial and national championships. Last season, was her first taste at a national championship, as she worked the 2016 Hockey Canada National Women s U18 Championship in Regina along with Clarke and Lieffers. Clarke, the other linesman on the crew residence in Weyburn. She returning to officiating after playing hockey in the states and has progressed quickly through the officiating ranks. Clarke, like Coleman attended the Level 4/5 camp this season and has worked provincial and national championships and will have her first taste of international hockey later this season at the 2018 IIHF Women s World Div. I Group B Championship in Mexico City. She also worked the 2017 National Women s U18 Championship the last two season and earned the gold medal game as a linesman in 2016 and as ref in All four officials are active supervisors and instructors within the SHA s Referee Division and all four can regularly be found working games in the SJHL, PJHL, SMAAAHL and Female USports and SFMAAAHL. These four officials highlight a small sample size of the potential of the female officiating program in Saskatchewan. The number have been steadily increasing in the past five years with the number of female officials in the province and this also sows the number of high level female officials is moving in the right direction. 5 Female Team Saskatchewan with Series of Firsts at U18 Nationals This National Women s Under-18 Championship was decided in Quebec City this past month. A series of firsts were accomplished for Team Saskatchewan, both during the preliminaries and the medal round. From the outset, Team Saskatchewan found themselves in Group B which was comprised of Team Manitoba, Team B.C. and the hosts, Team Quebec. On day one of the tournament, Team Saskatchewan took on Team B.C. It would be Team B.C. prevailing by a score of 2-0 in a tightly defended contest. Goaltender Jordan Ivanco (Saskatoon) would be credited with (30) thirty saves in the losing cause. The following day, Team Saskatchewan would play the hosts, Team Quebec. This game was kicked off with Taylor Kirwan (Gull Lake) scoring the opening goal 4:37 into the first period of play. Goals from Joelle Fiala (Clavet) and Jordyn Holmes (Saskatoon) would solidify a 3-2 victory for the prairie province. The victory also was the first for the team against Team Quebec at this tournament. FORWARD JORDYN HOLMES AFTER SCORING AGAINST TEAM QUEBEC The final preliminary game was a border battle versus Team Manitoba. A win would increase Team Saskatchewan s chances of a semi-final matchup and the opportunity to play for a medal. The two teams played a scoreless first period before Kennedy Bobyck (Regina) would get the green and white on the board at the 1:49 mark of the 2nd period. Another goal by Bobyck, also Miranda Hatt (Regina) and Allison Hayhurst (Wapella) would finish the scoring as Team Saskatchewan blanked Team Manitoba, score 4-0. At the conclusion of the round-robin, Team Saskatchewan finished 2-0-1, which was strong enough for 2nd in Group B and a berth in the semi-finals. 6 Female Team Saskatchewan with Series of Firsts at U18 Nationals (Cont.) The matchup for the semi-final put Team Saskatchewan up against the first place Team Ontario Blue from Group A. The offensive fire power for Team Ontario Blue would serve to be a difficult task to manage, as Team Sask. dropped a 6-2 decision. Grace Shirley (Saskatoon) would pick up the two markers for Team Sask. during the game. In the other semi-final, Team Ontario Red GOALTENDER JORDAN IVANCO MAKES THE would prevail over Team B.C. setting up an all-ontario final. With SAVE AGAINST TEAM B.C. IN THE BRONZE Team B.C. s loss, it would then be a rematch of Team MEDAL GAME Saskatchewan s opening game versus Team B.C. with Bronze Medal on the line. A classic game would ensue as Team B.C. opened the scoring nine minutes into the 2nd frame. Just before the period ended, Team Saskatchewan s Miranda Hatt (Regina) would answer with only eighteen seconds remaining in the period. A scoreless third period would ultimately lead to 4-on-4 overtime to decide third place in the tournament. With teams trading chances early, Team Saskatchewan would find themselves shorthanded in the extra frame which lead to the eventual overtime goal by Team. B.C. and the west coast province being awarded the Bronze Medal. Team Saskatchewan s Jordan Ivanco (Saskatoon) would stop (48) forty-eight shots and was awarded the games top player for Team Sask. With the overtime loss, Team Saskatchewan would place 4th in the tournament resulting in the team s best finish at the National Women s Under 18 Championship, dating back to TEAM SASKATCHEWAN CAPTAIN TAYLOR KIRWAN RECEIVES MOST SPORTSMANLIKE PLAYER AT U-18 NATIONALS Following the Gold Medal game, Team Saskatchewan s captain Taylor Kirwan (Gull Lake) was awarded the Most Sportsmanlike player for the tournament. Congratulations to Kirwan and the rest of Team Saskatchewan s players, coaches and staff for representing the Saskatchewan Hockey Association and the province of Saskatchewan with the outmost class and respect for the game. 7 THE CALL with TRENT CEY The Officiating Clinic season wraps up December 4 and with a handful of clinics left to be confirmed the number of officials looks to be close to the 3,150 who were registered last season. The number of officials registered in the province has been on an upward trend for the last five seasons. The SHA s Referee Division would like to thank the 86 clinic instructors who helped to cover the 86 clinics hosted this season. With the end of the clinic season comes the cut off date for officials who were registered last season, but have not recertified this season. Those officials can work up until December 7 and then will not be certified to continue officiating for the remainder of the season. December signals a busy month for the Referee s Division as we have 47 officials registered for the Bantam SaskFirst Regional Camps. Of those 47 officials, 24 will be selected to work the SaskFirst Development Camp in April in Regina, as well several will be selected from that group to work the Saskatchewan Winter Games in the Battlefords in February. December 7-10 is the Notre Dame Mandi Schwartz Female Showcase, which will feature 20 females from across the province officiating 40 games in the four-official system. Four of the officials who will be working games in that tournament include Michelle Stapleton, Alex Clarke, Cianna Lieffers and Jessica Coleman. Those four officials will also be part of the first female only officiating crew working a Prairie Junior Hockey League game. This was something that the late Jason Mercer had envisioned when he was the Referee-In-Chief of the PJHL. The game will be played December 3 in Saskatoon at the Rod Hamm Arena. Saskatchewan is extremely excited about the progress of the Female Officiating Program, which is viewed as one of the top female programs within the Hockey Canada structure. The quality the program was on display once again in November when Alex Clarke was at the National U18 Female Championship in Quebec and was selected to work the gold medal game. Clarke worked the gold medal game as a linesman last season when the championship was held in Regina. On the male side, Tannum Wyonzek also earned a championship game assignment last month while he was in British Columbia for the World U17 Challenge. He worked the gold medal game as a linesman. Officials; keep working hard, put in your best effort in each and every game and continue strive to continue your development as officials. Get out there and Earn Your Stripes.
