3 President s Message... On behalf of the Directors and Officers of the Ohio State Trapshooting Association as well as the staff of the Cardinal Shooting Center, it is my pleasure to invite you and your family to the 2014 Ohio State Trapshooting Tournament. This year marks the 128th Ohio State Shoot, a testament to the rich tradition and history of trapshooting in Ohio. The O.S.T.A. Board of Directors has been hard at work to make this year s state shoot full of fun, cash, prizes and trophies. I would like to thank our returning sponsors: Blaser, Bottom Dollar Gun & Archery, Brittain Motors, DownRange Manufacturing, E Z Go, John Deere, Kolar and Rio for their continued support and I would like to thank our new sponsors: Arkoe Outdoors, Co-Alliance and Stock Lock II for coming on board. Together, all these sponsors add something special to all the events at the State Shoot. I would also like to thank our many vendors for their support of our shoot. They offer all of the goods and services that you could want or need. We greatly appreciate the support of our resident and non-resident shooters who attend our shoot. We have a lot of great things going on for this year s state shoot. Back by popular demand is the Foundation s E-Z Go Golf Cart and Trailer Raffle. Tickets are available from Directors and the drawing will take place on Saturday prior to the shoot offs. The proceeds go towards the many scholarships that we award to students. On Monday, while the SCTP teams are competing, we have a Fun Day planned that includes a miss and out. There is $500 in added money to the winners and proceeds are being donated to the Shriners and St. Jude Children s Hospital. Some other highlights of this year s shoot is the $1000 added money to the top 3 shooters from Brittain Motors on Event 7, $2000 added money from Blaser on event 9 s special Lewis Class option, a Stock Lock II shoot off in event 5 courtesy of Pat McCarthy, $5000 added money shoot off on Event 13 from Kolar Arms and our annual Saturday Shoot Off which is for a John Deere Gator. Please make sure you read through the program so you do not miss out on any of these fantastic cash give away and prizes. On Thursday evening, I would like to invite everyone to our annual Hall of Fame Banquet which is held outside of the OSTA Hall of Fame Building. We will be honoring 2 very deserving shooters that are being inducted into the Hall of Fame this year: Merle Decker, Jr and the late Kathleen Cherubini Laurisky. Following their induction, we will then recognize this year s All Ohio Team which is sponsored by Cabela s. In closing, I want to thank the Board of Directors and Officers of the OSTA for allowing me the honor and privilege of serving as President for our great association. It is through their time and effort that we are able to have a premier shoot. Sara Dean

13 Dear Fellow Shooters, The Ohio Hall of Fame Museum is entering its fourth year! This year, I am very excited to announce that we are featuring 1993 HOF inductee Helen Urban Cone, the Urbandale Gun Club, and the Northwest SCTP shooters. For something new, I have put together a large 1955 Ohio map that shows the locations of many of the gun clubs from the late 1950 s. If you have anything of quality that pertains to gun clubs from that era, please let me know! We are constantly changing the exhibits to keep the museum new and interesting from year to year. All contributions are greatly appreciated, but we cannot exhibit all the items at once due to limited space. The displays are rotated and we are in constant need of new items. I am still working on a complete collection of Sportsmen s Review and Trap and Field and would appreciate donations of these magazines for our library. Our newest acquisition belonged to the legendary Joe Hiestand- his Remington 32, custom made doubles and live bird gun. It has the serial number of It was generously donated by Gerald Russo of New Jersey. Now Joe s gun is where it belongs as eloquently stated by Mr. Russo when he shipped the gun. We have reworked our custom display case to house both of Joe s guns side by side. Ralph McKee has again made a generous donation for the purchase of another custom made display case. The Foundation has received notice from the estate of 2010 HOF inductee Emerson Hoblit, that will allow the Foundation to enhance many aspects of the Hall of Fame Museum in the near future. I am so excited with the many items that are constantly flowing into the museum. Please be a part of this excitement and our growth by donating items and or money - large and small! The money collected from the donation box located in the museum, helped to purchase our laptop computer and the museum program. Many of the museum expenses are paid through the success of our shot raffle, so keep buying those Ton-of-Shot tickets! This year, we are conducting a SCTP Scavenger Hunt in the Museum. All SCTP youth shooters are invited to stop by the museum and fill out the hunting sheet and receive a free chocolate shot gun. Shooters are also invited to stop by the Hall of Fame Museum on Thursday of the State Shoot to congratulate the 2014 Hall of Fame inductees and visit with some of the members. The reception is 6:00p.m. 8:00 p.m. We will have refreshments and music. Please come and be a part of this historical event. Everything is appreciated! Stop by and see what s new! We thank you for your support, Betty Peterson Museum Director Ohio State Trapshooting Foundation 2324 Hussey Rd. Xenia, Ohio rpbjpeterson@gmail.com

14 2014 HALL OF FAME INDUCTEES MERLE V. DECKER JR. Findlay, Ohio Merle began shooting registered targets in 1968 at the Winchester Gun Club in Findlay, now known as Jaqua s. He has won numerous awards and tournaments and achieved his Grand Slam in 1993 at Great Eastern Gun Club when he broke 100 straight from the 27 yard-line. Merle has shot on three 5OOx5OO squads- one at the 1992 Ohio State Shoot, one at the 1993 Grand American, and one at Jaqua s. In the past few years, Merle has enjoyed being an instructor in the proper techniques of trapshooting. He has worked with young shooters at the Rogers Lake Trap Club in Sycamore and the Malinta Trap Club in Malinta. TOTAL LIFETIME TARGETS 92,400 Singles 81,250 Handicap 42,900 Doubles KATHLEEN CHERUBINI LAURISKY Lancaster, Ohio In the mid 70 s, Kathy was keeping busy as a partner in a clothing store in Zanesville. She became interested in trapshooting when her first husband (Dan Cherubini) introduced her to the sport. She was a fast learner! Soon she was joining him for weekend shoots at Airport Gun Club and Marietta Gun Club. She realized she loved the sport, and she loved the competition. With her Remington 1100 (and later a Beretta) she went on to win trophies in Ohio, Indiana, Michigan, Kentucky and Tennessee. She was a member of the All-Ohio Team four times and served as Captain in Kathy earned her place on the All-American Team in Her second marriage to Eugene Laurisky, kept her involved in the sport and she enjoyed winning husband-wife competitions as well as individual honors. Kathy had a particularly good year in 1994 and by 1995, her son Dante, decided to try his hand at registered shooting as well. That year, his mom won the Vandalia Handicap at the Grand American and the singles Championship at the Middletown Fall Festival along with many other honors. Dante was glad he took that year to do some shooting with his mother as it will always give him fond memories of their time together. Kathy developed macular degeneration but was determined to continue trapshooting. She had her stock modified so she could switch her dominant eye. However, shooting became even more difficult when Kathy developed lung cancer, so she retired from the competition. She passed away on St. Patrick s Day three years ago, leaving behind many friends, her family, and a very impressive trapshooting career.
