The puck will drop at 7:35 p.m. on Friday (Nov. 4) and Saturday (Nov. 5). OPPONENT Notre Dame is ranked No. 6 this week by the USCHO and No. 4 by USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine Men s College Hockey Poll. The Fighting Irish are overall and in the CCHA and come to Marquette on a 3-game winning streak. The three conference wins came in a series split with Ohio State and a series sweep at Bowling Green. The Irish split a non-conference series with Minnesota-Duluth and defeated Rensselaer. SERIES HISTORY Northern Michigan and Notre Dame have met 50 times. The first meeting was Oct. 20, 1981 when NMU won 3-2. The two teams have an even alltime series record, The record in Marquette is tied WILDCATS AGAINST FIGHTING IRISH Justin Florek and Tyler Gron each have two goals in their careers against Notre Dame. Florek has played 10 games while Gron, nine. Andrew Cherniwchan has three assists in 11 games. LAST MEETINGS The Fighting Irish took 3-of-4 games last season. NMU won the first game against the two in South Bend in December before losing the second game and both games in Marquette in early January. PINK EXPERIENCE Saturday s game will be the Pink Experience. Northern Michigan is partnering with VAST and the Marquette General Foundation on a fundraiser to benefit the Marquette General Cancer Center. The Pink Experience is a day-long event that includes the volleyball match against Hillsdale and the hockey game against Notre Dame. Pink jerseys will be auctioned off after the game with a minimum bid of $100. Pink Terrible towels and pink wristbands will be available for $1. Special pink game tickets can be purchased for $20 and there will be a silent auction for a pink hockey stick. 2 This Week s Notes (10/31) WILDCATS RANKED NMU is ranked No. 17 in the latest USCHO Top 25 poll after receiving 197 points. The Cats were No. 14 last week. The Cats received 23 points in the USA Today/USA Magazine Men s College Hockey Poll. Notre Dame was ranked as high as No. 2 this season. LAST WEEKEND NMU was swept in its first CCHA road series at No. 7 Western Michigan. The Broncos won 4-2 on Friday (Oct. 28) night and 3-2 in overtime on Saturday (Oct. 29). Sophomore forward Stephan Vigier scored all four NMU goals on the weekend. Vigier scored the lone goal of the second period on Friday night and added a power-play goal in the third period. Saturday, Vigier scored two goals in the second period to tie the game at two. The Notre Dame de Lourdes native has five goals on the season for the Wildcats. In 46 career games, Vigier has eight goals and 10 assists. Senior goaltender Reid Ellingson saw action in both games. He made 29 saves in Friday s game and 23 saves in relief of sophomore Jared Coreau on Saturday. Ellingson is now 3-2 on the season. He a 2.24 goals against average and 92.2 saver percentage. NMU has lost four games in a row at Lawson Arena. The last Wildcat win in Kalamazoo was Jan. 31, COACH KYLE Walt Kyle is in his 10th season on the bench for the Wildcats. His alltime record is He has led NMU to six 20-win seasons and the NCAA Tournament in The Cats have been to the CCHA Tournament at Joe Louis Arena six times under Kyle By The Numbers Wins by NMU over Notre Dame all-time, dating back to NMU s ranking this week by the USCHO. Dave Danis brings you the play-by-play all season long. CAPTAINS Seniors Justin Florek and Andrew Cherniwchan and junior Scott Macaulay will serve as captains this season. Florek will wear the C at home while Macaulay wears it on the road. CATS ON TELEVISION NMU plays four other TV games this season. Fox Sports Detroit will broadcast form the Berry Events Center on Saturday (Nov. 19) against Michigan State. FSD will also broadcast the Saturday (Jan. 14) game at MSU. The Big Ten Network will carry the Friday (Feb. 17) game at Michigan while FSD will broadcast the Saturday (Feb. 18) game. 7 Walt Kyle NMU Head Coach Coaching Staff Office Phone: Career Record: Walt Kyle, who enters his tenth season, was named the second head hockey coach in Northern Michigan University history on June 13, He took over for Rick Comley, who left to become the head coach at Michigan State University. Kyle has led the Wildcats to six 20-wins seasons and is at NMU. Kyle guided the Cats to the NCAA Tournament during the season and to the Central Collegiate Hockey Association (CCHA) Championship Tournament at Joe Louis Arena in seven of his nine years. He was the head coach of the U.S. National Junior Team, which placed fourth at the 2006 International Ice Hockey Federation World Junior Championship in British Columbia, Canada. The Cats lost in the CCHA Tournament Champion and advanced to the NCAA Tournament in NMU finished and in the conference. NMU has won the third-place game at the CCHA Championship three times (02-03, 07-08, 08-09) under coach Kyle. NMU has three-22 win seasons (02-03, 04-05, 05-06), a 21-win season (03-04) and two 20-win seasons (07-08, 09-10) in the Walt Kyle era. Prior to his NMU return Kyle was an assistant coach with the National Hockey League s New York Rangers for two years under coach Ron Lowe. Glen Sather, the Rangers general manager who was the previous GM in Edmonton, brought Kyle to New York. Kyle was the coach of the American Hockey League s Hamilton Bulldogs, the Oilers top affiliate club. Kyle s other NHL experience came with the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim under Ron Wilson. He has coached NHL stars such as Mark Messier, Eric Lindros, Brian Leetch, Paul Kariya and Teemu Selanne. His other professional coaching positions were with the AHL s Baltimore Bandits, the International Hockey League s San Diego Gulls and the Western Hockey League s Seattle Thunderbirds ( ). Kyle was a two-time NMU letterman after transferring from Boston College. He captained the 1980 and 81 Wildcat squads that advanced to the NCAA Frozen Four. Kyle appeared in 85 games for the Cats and scored 31 goals and had 59 assists for 90 points. He became the first person in NCAA hockey history to score a goal in two tournaments for two separate teams. Following graduation, he became a graduate assistant coach under Comley and was promoted to assistant coach in 1982, a position he held until Kyle was the program s top assistant in 1991 when Northern won the NCAA Division I national title. He attended graduate school at Northern, where he studied exercise physiology. Kris Rowe Athletic Trainer An active participant in USA Hockey, Kyle was an assistant coach under Lou Vairo in 2001 for Team USA, which finished fourth at the World Championships in Germany, and under Wilson for the 1994 squad that competed in Milan, Italy. He also was a coach with the 1992 and 93 U.S. Junior National Teams, the former which won the bronze medal the highest finish ever by an American squad under the old format, and one of only three U.S. teams to medal at the World Championships at the time. He was the assistant coach of the national junior squad under Kevin Constantine in Kyle was named to the USA Hockey s International Council in June Kyle and his wife, Ann, have four children: two daughters, Erin and Quinn; and two sons, Evan and Walt.
