NORTH DAKOTA RECAP: Friday, Nov The University of North Dakota got goals from Nick Mattson and Danny Kristo and junior goaltender Clarke Saunders stopped 34-of-35 shots as UND held off Notre Dame for a 2-1 win in front of a sellout crowd at the Compton Family Ice Arena on Friday. Anders Lee (Edina, Minn.) scored Notre Dame s lone goal in the game on a second-period powerplay chance. It looked like Lee had a goal late in the game that would have tied it but that was waved off when the referee said a puck had been frozen. Replays showed differently. North Dakota scored its first goal late in the first period as Mattson scored on a slap shot from the center point at 19:57 of the first period. Kristo made it 2-0 on the power play at 2:43 of the second with a backhander off a nice set up by Corban Knight who had two assists in the game. The Irish cut that lead in half at 5:25 of the second with Lee s power-play goal. Freshman Mario Lucia (Plymouth, Minn.) put a shot from the right point on goal that Lee was able to deflect and then jam the rebound past Saunders for his sixth goal of the season. The Irish would out shoot North Dakota, 36-17, in the game. Notre Dame s Steven Summerhays (Jr., Anchorage, Alaska) had 15 saves for the Irish. Notre Dame was 1-for-5 on the power play while North Dakota was 1-for-2. Saturday, Nov Anders Lee, Jeff Costello (Jr., Milwaukee, Wis.) and Kevin Lind (Jr., Homer Glen, Ill.) each had three-point games and goaltender Steven Summerhays stopped 30 shots as Notre Dame downed North Dakota, 5-2, in the second game of the series. Lee and Costello each had two goals and an assist while Lind scored a short-handed goal with a pair of assists in the win. Mark MacMillan and Rocco Grimaldi scored for North Dakota. Lee scored the first goal of the game at 7:23 of the first period with a backhander past goaltender Zane Gothberg. UND tied the game at 5:07 of the second as MacMillan cashed in on a 2-on-1 with Danny Kristo to make it 1-1. Lind put the Irish ahead to stay at 6:09 with a 4-on-3 shorthanded goal as his slapshot from the left point deflected over Gothberg s right shoulder for Lind s first of the season. Lee scored the game winner at 13:30 when Costello found him in the slot and he whipped a wrist shot past Gothberg for his eighth of the year and a 3-1 lead. The Notre Dame captain returned the favor late in the third when he set up a Costello goal on a wrist shot from the left circle at 18:34 to make it 4-1. Grimaldi beat Summerhays from the right face-off dot at 18:47 to make it 4-2 and Costello notched his second of the game, scoring into an empty net at 19:41 for the final of 5-2. The Irish out shot North Dakota, 41-32, with Gothberg making 36 saves in the game. Both teams were 0-for-5 on the power play. WEATHERING THE STORM: Last weekend s series with seventh-ranked North Dakota closed out a streak of 11 consecutive games for Notre Dame versus nationally ranked teams. 5 Notre Dame Fighting Irish Hockey Game Notes Page 5 RARE SWEEP: Notre Dame s back-to-back wins at Michigan on Nov marked just the fourth all-time sweep for the Irish at Yost Arena in the program s history. The last time that Notre Dame won a series at Michigan came on Feb. 3-4, 1978 when the two teams were members of the WCHA, 35 seasons ago. The previous sweeps came in , and This marked the 22nd, two-game series played between the two programs in the 45-year history of the program. SHARING THE WEALTH: Through the first 13 games of the season, 14 different Notre Dame players have scored the team s 37 goals with Anders Lee leading the way with eight. GOING ON THE OFFENSIVE: Two of Notre Dame s defensemen - sophomore Robbie Russo and junior Stephen Johns - are among the team s top five scorers this season. Due to the shift in the college hockey landscape last season, the conference saw its teams shift as Michigan, Michigan State and Ohio State will now play in the Big 10 hockey conference, beginning in along with Minnesota, Penn State and Wisconsin from the WCHA. When those teams pulled out of their respective conferences, the National Collegiate Hockey Conference (NCHC) was created, taking in teams from the WCHA and the CCHA. That conference includes: Colorado College, Denver, Miami, Minnesota Duluth, Nebraska-Omaha, North Dakota, St. Cloud State and Western Michigan. The remaining CCHA teams then joined the remaining WCHA teams in the WCHA that now includes: Alaska, Bowling Green, Ferris State, Lake Superior State and Northern Michigan. Notre Dame then made its conference choice and joined Hockey East. CONFERENCE CALL: Notre Dame begins its final season in the Central Collegiate Hockey Association (CCHA) in The Irish will begin play in the Hockey East Association beginning with the campaign. The change in conferences was announced on Oct. 5, 2011 with a press conference that was held at the Compton Family Ice Arena. In making the announcement, Hockey East commissioner Joe Bertagna said, It is not an overstatement to say that this is one of the most significant days in the history of our conference. The addition of new institutions is always exciting but Notre Dame brings a unique set of qualities and circumstances to the continued growth of our league. We are proud to welcome Notre Dame into the fold and we look forward to getting to the many details that come with this announcement. Notre Dame Vice President and Director of Athletics Jack Swarbrick said, We are excited to be joining Hockey East beginning in the season. Many factors played a role in our decision, but three were of special importance to us. The first two were the critical issues of the studentathlete experience and Notre Dame s fit with the other schools in the conference. But of special importance in this instance, was our goal of giving our hockey program an unprecedented level of national exposure through our expanded partnership with the NBC Sports Group. Athletics at Notre Dame has always served as a platform for promoting the University. Notre Dame head coach Jeff Jackson added, We are honored and pleased to join Hockey East for the season. The conference is an established league with a great tradition and outstanding programs that share Notre Dame s values. The exposure for our players and team in a major media and NHL market will be second to none. Hockey East s commitment to playing a smaller league schedule will allow us to enhance our home and non-conference schedule with traditional western and Big Ten rivals. This will allow us to bring great games to the Compton Family Ice Arena and create
