1 @SGS_PE Follow us on Twitter and Instagram SGS SPORTS NEWS We ve had an amazing fourth term here at SGS with different success stories to share! We ve seen our students win the DRET Hockey Cup with our U13 Hockey Team being Spring Cup champions and our U15 Hockey Team being runners up! We ve seen an All Star attend NJIRC in London, athletes being selected for Team GB and England Camps! VIP Visits and DRET Cross Country Cup rounded off a great term! Well done to everyone on a great Term 4 here at Skegness Grammar School! VIP Visit On the 26 th February, we were lucky enough to welcome Olympian Sally Walton to SGS! Sally is a Bronze Medal Winning Athlete for Hockey and had a packed day helping our pupils and Richmond Primary School.

2 During the morning Sally worked with Richmond Primary School and the 20 students they brought in a Skills session followed by a Q&A where she allowed the children to hold and wear her Bronze Olympic Medal. The children had a great time watching Sally show off her skills and hopefully were inspired to pursue Hockey! The rest of the day saw Sally assist in the preparation of our Hockey teams for the Spring Cup. This started off with working with our U13 Hockey Team focusing on strong runs on the wing and accurate penalty shots. Next up were out U15 s who wanted advice on reverse hits. For this exercise, we used video technology to allow the girls to watch their reverse hits and try to improve based on advice Sally provided. All of our girls were challenged to the best of their ability and provided with 1-1 coaching and feedback which definitely proved beneficial for all of our players. During lunch, a rewards Q&A session took place for our students to gain an insight into what it takes to become an Olympian. The sacrifices you need to make, highlights of competing in the Olympics, and the pathway to become an Olympian. Following lunch Sally ran an advanced masterclass for our more elite hockey players, providing them with extra practice with our guest and allowing them to ask for any advice they required for their sport. Sally s final session of the day saw her assist in the running of our Squad Hockey training session after school where we had over 30 students attend, mixed ages, mixed genders and mixed abilities. This allowed for any autographs, photos and for Sally to run a mini tournament to round off the day.

3 One of our students, Sophie Lewis, has the aim to become a Hockey Olympian and was able to speak to Sally and find out how she made this journey to London After trying on that medal, this has pushed Sophie to aim to achieve her goal and continue to throw everything into her training. We d like to thank Sally for all of her work during the day with all our students! All of our students loved the experience and were inspired to continue to participate in sports! DRET Spring Cup 6 th March was finally here meaning it was time for our much anticipated Spring Cup! Would we be able to regain our title for the 3 rd year in a row? Due to waterlogged pictures, the Rugby Cup has been postponed to the 19 th April, but on the 6 th March it was the turn of our Hockey Teams to give us the best possible start! Our U13 Hockey Team had an excellent day being undefeated through all their games and only conceded one goal in the final. The U13 Final took place against our Varsity rivals KEVI! The game started

4 dramatically with KEVI taking the early lead. However, after an excellent short corner provided by Holly Smith, our captain Isabelle Coleman levelled over the score taking us into extra time! Within the first 30 seconds we had taken the lead with exactly the same format. An amazing short corner by Holly, finished off by Isabelle! We were crowned U13 Hockey Champions! Well done to all our Girls on an amazing day and performance! Our U15 s also had a very successful day being undefeated and conceding only two goals. We eased into the finals of the competition after beating KEVI in the semi-finals to face Barnes Wallis Academy. The game was end to end with shots being fired from both teams, but unfortunately BWA were the ones to convert their shot. We were defeated 1-0, but came Runners Up showing an amazing performance through-out the day! Well done to all our girls on an amazing day! After a successful day of winning the Overall Hockey Cup we are currently in 1 st place going into the Rugby Cup!

5 DRET Cross Country Cup The next big event of this term was the DRET Cross Country Cup. All our athletes have shown great commitment to our Cross Country club and excellent attitudes to this sport. This has proved to be our most successful year of club participation so well done to you all! We took 14 students down to Holyoaks Shooting Lodge near Market Harborough. Our team consisted our 6 Year 7 s, 4 Year 8 s and 4 Year 9 s. During the day, we had a VIP Athlete in attendance for the day in Olympian from the Beijing games, Jenny Meadows. Jenny came and spoke to our students beforehand and gave them useful advice to help ease their nerves and provide them with tactics and strategies for their individual races. We had some great results achieved by our runners, for some this was their first time competing at a Cross Country Event. You made us all very proud! Athletes of The Term This term we have seen great athletes showcase their hard work, a helping hand, commitment to clubs and overall be a great presence here in the PE Department. Each week in our weekly bulletin we announce our Athlete for the Week. This term our athletes of the week have been; Tyler Sherwood (Yr 7), Thalia Nuttall (Yr 7), Lola Reid (Yr 7), Isabelle Coleman (Yr 8) Jess Ward (Yr 9)

7 .Well done to all of you for your efforts and commitment to our clubs and your continued help to the PE Department. It s now that time to crown our Athletes of the Term. This term we would like to award this to Ava Houlston (Yr 8). Ava has continued to prove herself to be a dedicated part of all our school teams and continues to lead by example. This term she was called up to the England Training Camp through the FA Talent Pathway. She assists in the running of our Girls Futsal Team and captains our Football Team. Ava also proved to be an integral part of our Hockey Team that won the Spring Cup! Our other Athlete of the Term goes to Kobe Oakes (Yr 9). Kobe is another dedicated sportsman who is a valuable member of both our Rugby, Football and Rowing Team. This term Kobe has represented the DRET All Stars for both Rugby and Rowing showcasing his excellent skills at these sports. Kobe finished 8 th in his heat at the National Junior Indoor Rowing Championships. What an amazing achievement. Kobe s next challenge is the Spring Cup next term where he will assist the Rugby Team in hopefully bringing back the coveted trophy! Our team of the term goes to our U13 Hockey Cup team, who successfully won the Hockey Spring Cup! SGS Sport Enrichment Well done to everyone for your continued efforts taking part and helping us out in the PE Department! We re always striving to get as many people as possible to take part!
