1 February 2017 Waterloo Wolves Midget AAA Hockey Volume 8, Issue 5 Wolf Talk OHL Draft Targets Major Midget Players As reported in the January 20, 2017 edition of the Waterloo Region Record, the Ontario Hockey League (OHL )will be launching a new element of the draft in April On April 12, 2017, four days after the OHL has their entry level draft for Minor Midget Players, they plan to have an Under 18 draft for Major Midget Players. This will consist of a 4-round online draft. All 20 OHL teams will get 4 rounds, 5 if a goaltender is selected. The draft is open to players born in 1999 and The press release included the following statement from OHL vice-president, Ted Baker. We felt it was a way to enhance the midget category to provide an opportunity for players who were otherwise not drafted to say, Hey, there is still an opportunity here.' 6 Wolves Alumni Out in Force in New Hamburg In early January, the New Hamburg Firebirds hosted PJHL Doherty Division annual Showcase Weekend. The weekend included a game with the PJHL Doherty All-Stars playing the New Hamburg Firebirds Alumni team which included many Wolves alumni including Ryan Purcell in net (who was also the game MVP) as well as Jay D Aguilar, Mike D Alosio, Matt Horst, Taylor Wood and Brandon Yantzi. The alumni beat the all-stars 9-6.
