NEW JERSEY STATE TRAPSHOOTING ASSOCIATION President s Message Fellow Shooters, Another shooting year is upon us. We have all lived through very trying times with two devastating hurricanes in a 15-month period Irene in August of 2011 and now Sandy that caused widespread damage through flooding and high winds. It is my sincerest wish that all of you and your family and friends haven t suffered any loss of life to a loved one and that you haven t sustained significant damage to your homes. For those of you that have lost a loved one my prayers go out to you. And, for those who have sustained damage to your homes I hope that help is on the way so you can rebuild. On behalf of the Officers and Directors of New Jersey State Trapshooting Association it is my pleasure to invite you to attend and participate in our 2013 State Shoot, Zone Shoots and the 13th Garden State Grand. I urge you to also participate in shooting events hosted by other gun clubs around the state as they are putting a lot of effort in new programs to improve their clubs and attract new shooters. In addition, please support out of state clubs. We will again be using the PreSquad.com service this year for both the State Shoot and the Garden State Grand to make pre-squadding easier. This year at our State Shoot we will once again be awarding $4, in Added Money and Approx. $13, in Trophies. I would like to again personally thank Cheyanne Mountain Outfitters and the Sportsman s Center for once again showing their support of our State Association and the shooters by providing gift certificates for use in the Jersey Draw. For those shooter s who may not be familiar with the Jersey Draw, a number will be drawn after the event and any shooter whose score ends with that number is eligible to shoot off for the prizes. I also want to take this opportunity to remind shooters to the change in the Middle Fifty Jackpot option. You MUST play the option to be eligible for any monies. If no one runs the middle fifty in any of the eligible handicap events by the conclusion of the State Shoot; the monies will be awarded to the shooter having played the Middle Fifty Jackpot option with the highest score in the Middle Fifty, in the Handicap Championship on Sunday. We have also made changes to many of the options based on what the shooters have told us they wanted to see. Please read the program so that you are familiar with the changes prior to playing any options. I would like to thank all the NJSTA Officers and Directors for their time and effort to keep our Association and shooting events running smoothly. I want to personally thank the Pine Belt Sportsman s Club, Pine Valley Gun Club, North Jersey Clay Target Club who host our events and all our member clubs, who weekly hold events that generate revenue for the State Association in order for us to provide State Association sponsored events. Please, support these club. Shooters are reminded that your concerns and suggestion to improve our events are welcome. Please feel free to talk to any member of the BofD, and let us know what we are doing well or what we are doing wrong. We are not perfect, but everyone involved in putting on these events want to make it the best experience for the shooter. And, We can t fix it if we don t know its broken. May you and yours have a happy and healthy year and break them all. Sincerely, Craig Gasparine 17

NEW JERSEY STATE TRAPSHOOTING ASSOCIATION TROPHY HIERARCHY FOR ALL SHOOTS ATA trophies are higher than N.J. or zone trophies. All open trophies are lesser. If a shooter qualifies for more than one trophy, that shooter must notify the Tournament Office within 15 minutes after that event s last scores have been posted as to which trophy he/she desires to take or shoot-off for. IMPORTANT: CATEGORY RULE CHANGES: Shooters may declare only one category: i.e. lady, sub-junior, junior, veteran, senior veteran. A shooter may no longer declare, for example, lady veteran. (Note: this new rule does not apply to chair shooters.) Any shooter who is tied for event champion may shoot off/carry over for the champion trophy. If the shooter fails in the championship trophy off/carry over and has declared a Special Category, the shooter will fall back to their declared category. Any shooter who has declared a Special Category at classification and whose score qualified him/her for any trophy in his/her declared category will compete for the category trophy and not for place, class or yardage group. 39 2013 NEW JERSEY STATE TRAPSHOOTING PROGRAMS NJ STATE HALL OF FAME OFFICERS President Joseph Sissano Vice President Henry Fratz Secretary-Treasurer Rudolph Torlini NOMINATION REVIEW COMMITTEE Past President Edward Yanchok State Delegate Joseph Sissano Director at Large Robert Erisman Northern Zone Representative Mark Wade Southern Zone Representative J. Gold HALL OF FAME 2013 INDUCTEES Garnett Arnie Arnold Eugene Salomon, Sr. Lewis R. Slocum, Sr. The induction ceremony will take place at the State Shoot on Saturday, June 1, 2013 at 6:00 p.m. SHARP. Please join the Hall of Fame Committee in honoring the 2013 inductees. GARNETT ARNIE ARNOLD ATA # Garnett Arnold (better known as Arnie) was born to a coal miner in Six, West Virginia in the 1930s. For the first decade or so of Arnie s life, he had never heard of trapshooting. This quickly changed in 1954 when his brother Bob started shooting skeet. This is what sparked Arnie s early interest in trapshooting. His first round of trap was around 1962 at Delaware County Sportsman Club in Springfield, Pennsylvania. After this, Arnie and Bob traveled to many clubs in and around Philadelphia. In 1968 Arnie moved into South Jersey, where he started visiting Pine Valley Gun Club. Almost every weekend, Pine Valley Gun Club had twelve to fifteen squads a day. It was a very nice, well-attended at the time and everyone was very welcoming. In 1972, Arnie went into business and started Arnold s Excavating Company where he built service stations throughout the Tri-State area. This endeavor kept him very busy until the oil embargo resulted in a lack of excavating work. The lack of work for Arnold s Excavating continued next page 37

2013 NEW JERSEY STATE TRAPSHOOTING PROGRAMS Company then led Arnie to buy a heating oil company in the early 1980s. Located in Audubon, New Jersey, the business was successful for quite a few years. Whilst owner of Audubon Cesco, Arnie became the president of the South Jersey Oil Heat Association three times over the span of thirty years. He has also been involved (and still is today) with the Fuel Merchant Association and the Petroleum Market Association of America. In the year of 1997, Arnie was finally able to get back into the sport he really loved. He found, however, his first trip back to Pine Valley was not how he remembered it. In his eyes, Pine Valley Gun Club needed a little help to get back and up to date with the other clubs in the South Jersey area. Not too long after returning to Pine Valley, Arnie and his beautiful life partner Geri decided to help the club become more attractive to shooters in the area. Over the next years, they did just that. One big project that Arnie and Geri tackled was building a new kitchen at Pine Valley. Now, according to Arnie, the members of the gun club can order a good meal and listen to a lot of excuses as to why they missed so many targets. There are so many excuses they can t remember which to use, and Arnie says he s sure there are plenty they haven t even thought of yet. Most of Arnie s efforts went toward trying to promote P.V.G.C. over the years. He truly wanted people to see the club as a comfortable and relaxing place to shoot and have fun with friends. Since 1997 Arnie has shot over 107,000 targets in sixteen yards and over 35,000 targets in handicap. His first 100 was at the Pennsylvania State shoot and, since then, he has had quite a few more perfect rounds. He is a lifetime member at both Pine Valley and Pine Belt Gun Clubs. Arnie feels lucky to have been accepted onto the Second State Team in Garnett Arnold would like to thank the New Jersey State Hall of Fame for nominating him for this outstanding award. Trapshooting has been such a phenomenal part of his life and he does not know where he would be without it today. 38

2013 NEW JERSEY STATE TRAPSHOOTING PROGRAMS EUGENE SALOMON, SR. ATA # Gene was born in Moonachie, New Jersey in 1936, at the age of two, his parents moved down to Yellow Brook Road in Farmingdale. Gene still resides in the family homestead. Back in the day, it was a working farm with corn, various vegetables and chickens. Growing up on the farm with his brother Hans, Gene was very familiar with all the mechanics of the tractors and associated machinery. Gene attended Howell Township public school and graduated from Freehold High School. While growing up Gene soon was out hunting with his brother and Dad. In order to get proficient with the shotgun he and his friends were buying clay pigeons from the local sport shop, with the aid of the hand thrower they were easily breaking targets. Gene told me, that because of the cost of components, targets and cash being a scarce commodity, he and his friends would reload a box of shells and shoot 12 shells on one Saturday and the remaining 13 on the next Saturday! In 1954, at the age of 18, the desire of Gene and all his hunting and shooting friends led to the establishment of the Farmingdale Gun Club, on some vacant land, where now resides The Eagles Golf Course on Cranberry Rd in the Boro of Farmingdale. Back in those days you just went out and did things and basically squatted on the land. A trap house was erected and the people came and enjoyed the sport of trapshooting. The club prospered over the years and eventually three traps were erected. After graduating high school, Gene had experience working on the farm equipment and soon started working for a local non-union excavator, where he learned to operate larger excavating equipment. Gene was able to get into Local #825 of the Operating Engineers. He was soon traveling for work up and down the coast of New Jersey and working in five counties of New York State, NYC, Maryland and Connecticut. During the establishment and the growing of the Farmingdale Gun Club at the old location, Gene was buying all his components and targets locally from the sport shop in town. Gene was told of a fellow in Vineland, Lou Pagluighi, the father of Bob Pugluighi, who eventually established Robert s Shell and at one time was the biggest supplier of targets, ammo and components in the state. Anyway, Gene started buying components, shells, guns and targets at wholesale prices and then started his own business, working out of a garage behind his house. In 1966, burglars broke into the business at night and stole some guns and started a fire to cover up the break in, which destroyed the entire wooden structure. Gene was able to rebuild and a larger cement block structure was erected. In 1967, Gene married his late wife Jenny; they had two children, Eugene Jr. and a daughter Hope. The children, when they became old enough would work, Junior setting targets and continued next page 39

2013 NEW JERSEY STATE TRAPSHOOTING PROGRAMS Hope pulling for the shooters. Hope still helps out her Dad pulling, during the registered shoots held at the club. In 1968, Gene relocated the three traps to the family owned property and the Howell Trap Club was established, no more squatting on someone else s property! Besides running the Trap Club, working as an operating engineer, running the store, Gene would make deliveries throughout the state with his red Ford 1-Ton pickup truck with a tarp covering all the supplies. Some of his clients were Roger Taylor up in Smoke Rise, North Jersey Gun Club in Fairfield, the Winchester range in Englishtown, Grouse Ridge out past Clinton and Pam Olsen s, Old Mill in Secaucus. Gene was a busy guy, that s not counting him getting out to the different register shoots. Gene s first registered targets were at the Westy Hogan s, on the boardwalk in Asbury Park. It was a 50 target event on Friday, a preliminary day back then, he was squaded with Toot s Tindall, one of the premier lady shooters at the time here in the Garden State. Gene was shooting a Remington Model 58 automatic with a cylinder choke! He broke a 42x50. What Gene was impressed most by was the way Toot s was smashing her targets with her Winchester Model 12. Gene s first trip out to the Grand American in Vandalia Ohio was in 1965, Gene broke a 195 on Monday of Grand week and on Wednesday s Clay Target Championship, Gene broke a 198 and was tied for third place in Class B, needless to say, Gene lost the shoot off. Gene returned in 1966 with his shooting buddy Hans Barkalow. Gene broke a 98 in one of the handicaps, not knowing what was high, he and Hans were heading out to dinner when he heard his name being called for a shoot off. This time Gene was victorious and secured third place. Back then Federal Ammunition would give out a 6-8 inch oval patch with your name and score during the event you won. Gene mounted the patch on his shooting vest which was lost in the fire at his business. At the Grand in 2004, Gene shot a 199 in the White Flyer Championships, he secured third place after a 100 target shoot off. In 2007, Gene again broke a 199 to win Class B after a 25 bird shoot off. In 2009, Gene won Senior Vet with a 98 in one of the handicaps. In 2011 at the Ohio State Shoot in Marengo Gene won a Senior Vet trophy in each of the two handicap events that day. Gene has competed and won a class singles trophy at the New York Athletic Club shoot at Travers Island, Gene has competed and won trophies in Maryland, Virginia, Delaware, Pennsylvania and New Jersey. So far Gene has registered 116,925 singles, 74,875 handicap and 38,950 doubles targets. 40

2013 NEW JERSEY STATE TRAPSHOOTING PROGRAMS LEWIS R. SLOCUM, SR. ATA # Lewis was born on a farm in Laurence Township New Jersey in August of Lew was mechanically inclined working with all the farm equipment, which led to one of his first jobs working in Trenton on motorcycles. Lew raced motorcycles and one time a few of his friends rode out to the Reading Raceway in Pennsylvania to compete. However, it started to snow and they all had to take a train home because of all the snow that day. In 1908, Lew moved to Ewing Township and opened up a garage next to his residence. Lew was a mechanic and worked on the new fangled contraption called the automobile! Over the years, Lew s business grew and he was able to hire good workers, which allowed him to get out and do some shooting. Besides auto repairs he sold new Pontiacs and Grahams. Lew married his wife Ethel in 1902 and had four children, three girls and a boy. Ethel was also a trap shooter and would accompany him and their son Lewis Jr. to shoots and compete. Ethel won the New Jersey State Lady Singles Title in In 1923, Lew became a life member of the ATA and would travel to Vandalia Ohio in August to compete. Lew Jr. recalls traveling with his Dad to Vandalia in an air cooled Franklin with their tent on the running boards of the car. Back then it would take two to three days to make the journey. Once in Vandalia they would set up their tent (there were not many hotels or motels back then!) and join the other contestants in the various competitions. Lew purchased a W & C Scott single barrel shot gun in 1926 for $400. It came with a thirty inch ventilated rib barrel. It was an English arms company from Birmingham England and Lew shot this gun throughout his shooting career. His son Lewis Jr. is still using it to this day (Junior s 90 years old!) In 1928, Lew won his first two New Jersey Championships, the prestigious Handicap Championship with a 98 and the All Around Championship with a 379. With a 196, Lew won the New Jersey Singles Championship in The next year, he attended the Grand and was a member of the East Team which defeated the team from the West by two birds. Lew traveled to Ambler Pennsylvania in 1934 to the Twin-Pike Club and won a four way shoot off after tying with 23x25 flyers to secure the New Jersey Flyer Championship. Lew s second New Jersey Singles Title was won in 1935 and in 1940 he repeated it for the third time. Lew sold the automobile business in 1939 and opened a bowling alley where the garage once was. The bowling alley has been expanded over the years and the third and fourth generations of Slocum s are still running it. Lew stopped registering targets in 1949 according to the ATA s records; during Lew s shooting career he registered 59,800 singles, 12,475 handicap and 1350 doubles targets. Lew passed away in November of 1955, he was
