Brown did start four games at midfield last season, but made the move to his natural attack position this season, and Enright had five career starts through his first two seasons. New Blue II: In addition to the six new starters in the lineup, the overall Blue Jay roster is also vastly different than a year ago. Gone are 11 seniors who exhausted their eligibility and in their place are 17 freshmen. Youth Will be Served: Johns Hopkins is fielding one of the youngest rosters in the nation this season as 17 of the team s 49 players are freshmen and 29 are either freshmen or sophomores. Only nine of the 49 are seniors and two of those nine - Eric Schneider and Phil Castronova - have an extra year of eligibility and are planning to return for the 2015 season. For Starters: Entering the 2014 season, the entire 49-man Johns Hopkins roster counted a total of 132 combined career starts to its credit. Of those 132, Rob Guida (38), Jack Reilly (30), Brandon Benn (29) and Wells Stanwick (17) accounted 114, or 86.7%. No other returning player had started more than five games for the Blue Jays. By contrast, last year s 11-man senior class graduated with a combined 321 starts with six of those 11 players earning 45 or more starts during their careers. Through 15 games, 111 of JHU s 182 goals have been assisted, or 61.0%. Only three times since 2003 has Johns Hopkins finished a season with more than 60% of its goals being assisted. The 2003 team assisted on 67.4% of its goals, while the 2004 (64.3%) and 2009 (62.4%) teams also eclipsed the 60% mark. Extra, Extra: Johns Hopkins did not convert on either of its extra-man opportunities against Virginia and is now 27-of-52 (.519) for the year. 33 2014 Johns Hopkins Men s Lacrosse Notes Game-by-Game Recaps Game 1 #14 Ohio State-9 February 9, 2014 #11 Johns Hopkins-10 Homewood Field BALTIMORE, MD Senior Brandon Benn s second goal of the game 59 seconds into the third overtime lifted the 11th-ranked Johns Hopkins men s lacrosse team to a 10-9 victory against 14th-ranked Ohio State before 1,338 fans at Homewood Field Sunday afternoon. Benn s goal capped a game that saw the Blue Jays trail early, lead by three in the second half and kill off an Ohio State extra-man opportunity in the second overtime. The triple-overtime game is the second-longest in Johns Hopkins history as only a four-overtime affair with Virginia in 2001 was longer. After splitting the opening faceoffs of the first and second overtime, junior Drew Kennedy won the draw to open the third extra session and the Blue Jays quickly called timeout. From there, the Blue Jays worked the ball to sophomore Holden Cattoni at the top of the box, where he found Benn 10 yards from the goal to the right of Buckeye goalie Greg Dutton. Benn fake dodged top side from the wing and stepped in and to the side of his defender before ripping home the game-winner, which secured JHU s 12th win in 14 season openers under head coach Dave Pietramala. The Blue Jays had taken control of the game in the third quarter by outscoring the Buckeyes 6-3 after the teams battled to a 2-2 halftime score. After scoring twice in the opening 30 minutes, it took the Blue Jays just two minutes of the third quarter to match that as senior Rob Guida and freshman John Crawley scored off assists from junior Wells Stanwick. Ohio State s Jesse King and Reegan Comeault wrapped goals around a Cattoni strike in a span of just over two minutes midway through the period to make it 5-4 before the Blue Jays scored three of the last four goals of the third quarter to grab an 8-5 lead entering the final period. Michael Pellegrino, Benn and Stanwick all scored in the final 6:02 of the third quarter for the Blue Jays, while Turner Evans added his only goal of the game for Ohio State during that same time frame. The Blue Jays three-goal lead held for more than six minutes in the fourth quarter before King completed his hat trick at the 11:31 mark off a nice feed inside from Comeault. An unassisted goal by Johns Hopkins sophomore Ryan Brown with just under eight minutes left pushed JHU s lead to 9-6, which set stage for OSU s late-game rally. Despite scoring seven goals in a span of just over 22 minutes to open the second half, the Blue Jays couldn t quite put the Buckeyes away and Ohio State made the run that forced overtime. King needed just over two minutes to score his fourth and fifth goals of the game and sophomore Gordie Koerber made a nice cut through the slot and Charlie Schnider found him for the equalizer with 3:07 left in the fourth quarter. It would be more than 12 minutes of playing time before Benn s game-winner, but it wasn t for lack of chances for both teams down the stretch. Brown had a goal taken away for a crease violation with 75 seconds left in regulation and Ohio State fired seven shots in the first two overtime periods, including two that were saved by Johns Hopkins goalie Eric Schneider. Still, it came down to one possession and Kennedy, who won a career-high 18 of 22 faceoffs for the Blue Jays on the day, took the one to open the third overtime and Benn capitalized 59 seconds later to end the marathon. Stanwick paced the Blue Jays with one goal and a career-high-tying five assists, while Benn and Brown both scored to two goals and added an assist to give JHU s starting attack trio a combined five goals and seven assists. In addition his work on faceoffs, Kennedy had a career-high 13 ground balls and Schneider had a careerbest 13 saves for Johns Hopkins. King, an Honorable Mention All-American last season, matched Stanwick s six points with his five-goal, one-assist effort. Comeault and Carter Brown both added one goal and one assist and Dutton posted 11 saves in goal for the Buckeyes, who matched the Blue Jays on ground balls (30-30) and were a perfect 21-for-21 on clears. Game 2 Towson-8 February 15, 2014 #11 Johns Hopkins-15 Homewood Field BALTIMORE, MD The 11th-ranked Johns Hopkins men s lacrosse team got four goals from senior Brandon Benn, sophomore Ryan Brown and freshman John Crawley and one goal and five assists from junior Wells Stanwick as the Blue Jays powered past visiting Towson, 15-8, at blustery Homewood Field Saturday afternoon. The Blue Jays move to 2-0 on the year with the win, while the Tigers slips to 1-1. The Tigers led 5-3 after Greg Cuccinello scored three straight goals for Towson to cap a 4-0 run that bridged the first and second quarters and took jut over seven minutes. Brown answered with the first of his four goals just 45 seconds after Cuccinello completed his first-half hat trick and that ignited a 10-1 Blue Jay run that extended through the end of the third quarter. Stanwick and Brown added unassisted goals 76 seconds apart shortly after Brown s initial goal to give the Blue Jays a 6-5 lead at the half, but Towson s Max Siskind drew the Tigers even just over a minute into the third quarter when he took a pass from Ryan Drenner and dipped inside his defender just above the goal line and scored from in tight. From there, it was all Johns Hopkins. Brown completed his hat trick just over a minute after Siskind scored and Crawley dodged from behind the goal on consecutive possessions and scored both times to give the Blue Jays their first three-goal lead at 9-6. Six days ago the Blue Jays scored six times in the third quarter of a 10-9 triple overtime win against Ohio State. This week, Brown s strike and Crawley s pair jump-started a seven-goal third quarter for the Blue Jays, who got another goal from Brown and one each from Holden Cattoni, Benn and freshman Kieran Eissler before the end of the period to push the lead to 13-6 entering the fourth quarter. Stanwick assisted on Brown s first goal of the quarter and the goals by Benn and Eissler. Eissler s goal was the first of his career. Mike Lowe and Cuccinello sandwiched goals around two more Benn strikes in the fourth quarter as the Blue Jays put the finishing touches on their 19th consecutive victory over the Tigers. A seven-goal Johns Hopkins victory was the last thing anyone at Homewood Field thought they d see early on as Towson dug out of an early 2-0 hole (courtesy of Crawley s first two goals in the opening seven minutes) with a 5-1 run that bridged the first and second quarters and covered exactly 12 minutes. Freshman Joe Seider ripped one home from 12 yards to slice the 2-0 deficit in half, only to have Benn answer with an extra-man goal late in the first quarter. Junior Justin Mabus again made it a one goal game when he split a pair of defenders and beat Blue Jay goalie Eric Schneider from six yards out to make it 3-2 Johns Hopkins at the end of the first quarter. The one-goal Blue Jay lead was a two-goal deficit 6:01 into the second quarter as Cuccinello scored twice in a 41-second span early in the quarter and then picked the far post at the 8:59 mark to give the Tigers the 5-3 lead. The 3-0 Blue Jay run to end the first half followed shortly after and set the stage for the pivotal third quarter, which saw the Blue Jays hold decisive advantages in goals (7-1), shots (21-2), ground balls (12-4) and faceoffs (8-1). Crawley is the first Johns Hopkins freshman midfielder to score four goals in a game since Paul Rabil had four in a overtime victory at Syracuse on March

34 2014 Johns Hopkins Men s Lacrosse Notes Game-by-Game Recaps 18, Brown s four goal and six points were both career highs, while Stanwick matched his career high with five assists for the second consecutive game. The four goals for Benn mark his eight career four-goal game. Towson got an early spark from faceoff specialist Conor Pequigney, who won 5-of-6 faceoffs in the first quarter, but Johns Hopkins Drew Kennedy rebounded from the slow start and won 16-of-23 faceoffs and added 10 ground balls in the victory. Cuccinello led the Tigers with his four goals and Drenner added three assists, but Seider and Thomas DeNapoli, who combined for seven goals and two assists in Towson s 11-8 win over High Point in the season opener, were held to a combined one goal and two assists. Despite the loss, sophomore goalie Tyler White was strong in goal for the Tigers as he posted 18 saves. Game 3 Michigan-5 February 22, 2014 #8 Johns Hopkins-14 Homewood Field BALTIMORE, MD The eighth-ranked Johns Hopkins men s lacrosse team jumped out to a 9-1 halftime lead and had 11 different players score as the Blue Jays eased past visiting Michigan, 14-5, at Homewood Field Saturday afternoon. The Blue Jays improve to 3-0 on the year, while the Wolverines slip to 2-2. The win was the 150th for Dave Pietramala as the head coach at Johns Hopkins and it came in his 200th game as the head coach at Homewood. He is now as the head coach at Johns Hopkins and overall. Hopkins sprinted out to a 6-0 lead after the opening 15 minutes as five different players found the back of the net. Junior Michael Pellegrino s transition goal opened the scoring less than two minutes into the game and JHU added five more goals on 13 first-quarter shots to push out to the early six-goal lead. Junior Wells Stanwick assisted on Pellegrino s goal, added a strike of his own four minutes later and got the helper on Brandon Benn s second goal of the quarter in the final minute to fuel the early run, which also included unassisted goals from midfielders Bronson Kelly and John Crawley. Doug Bryant broke a game-opening Wolverine scoring drought that reached more than 21 minutes when he fired home an unassisted goal at the 9:21 mark of the second quarter, but a three-goal Blue Jay run that took less than two minutes midway through the period effectively put the game away. A pair of Holden Cattoni goals, including one while the Blue Jays were on the extra-man, and a strike from senior midfielder Rob Guida accounted for JHU s second-quarter scoring and gave JHU the eight-goal halftime lead. Michigan eventually outshot the Blue Jays 41-36, but the Blue Jay defense did a great job of pushing the Wolverines to their off-hand and tough angles. Senior goalie Eric Schneider posted eight of his career-high 19 saves in the first half as the Blue Jays built their lead. Schneider s 19 saves are the most by a Johns Hopkins player since Pierce Bassett had 20 in a win against then eighth-ranked Loyola on May 8, The Blue Jays nearly matched their three-goal second-quarter run with a threegoal flurry in the third quarter that took just under three minutes and included Guida s second and goals by sophomore Ryan Brown and freshman Cody Radziewicz. Guida s goal with just over 10 minutes remaining gave the Blue Jays a 12-1 lead. Michigan won the statistical battle over the final 20 minutes of the game and outscored the Blue Jays 4-2 over that span to account for the 14-5 final score. David McCormack, David Joseph and Kyle Jackson scored unassisted goals during that time for the Wolverines and Peter Kraus assisted on a Riley Kennedy goal for the Wolverines, who fired off 27 of their 41 shots in the second half. Benn, Guida and Cattoni all scored twice for the Blue Jays, who also got the one goal and three assists from Stanwick. The Blue Jay defense held Michigan s starting attack and first midfield to a combined two goals and no assists on 18 shots. Sophomore Brad Lott had a great day on faceoffs for the Wolverines as he was 14-of-23 and added nine ground balls. Notes: Johns Hopkins is 3-0 for the fifth straight year and the sixth time in the last seven years JHU improved to 20-3 all-time in the month of February Benn s two goals extended his goal-scoring streak to 19 games. Game 4 #5 Johns Hopkins-15 March 1, 2014 #10 Princeton-9 Class of 1952 Stadium PRINCETON, NJ The visiting Johns Hopkins men s lacrosse team used an 8-1 run that bridged the second and third quarters to turn a 4-4 tie into a 12-5 advantage and the fifth-ranked Blue Jays never let 10th-ranked Princeton get closer than four in the final 20 minutes of the game in a 15-9 victory at Class of 1952 Stadium Saturday afternoon. The win, Johns Hopkins fourth straight at Princeton, improves the Blue Jays record to 4-0 on the year, while the Tigers slip to 2-1 with the loss. A spirited first quarter that included 19 shots, eight goals and four Princeton extra-man chances ended the same way it began; tied (4-4). From there, the Blue Jays took control with the 8-1 run that included goals from five different players and gave them what proved to be the insurmountable seven-goal lead. It took less than three minutes of the second quarter for the Blue Jays to turn the 4-4 tie into a 6-4 lead as sophomore Holden Cattoni and junior Wells Stanwick netted unassisted goals to give the Blue Jays the two-goal lead. A Mike MacDonald goal three minutes after Stanwick s goal trimmed the deficit to 6-5, but a three-goal Hopkins run over the final 7:47 of the half gave the Blue Jays a 9-5 lead at intermission. Stanwick completed his first-half hat trick to jump-start the three-goal spree as Ryan Brown found him on the backside after a quick restart and Rob Guida got his hands free just over a minute later to make it 8-5. When Connor Reed dodged from the top of the box and scored with four seconds left in the first half the Blue Jays had their 9-5 lead. Any hopes for a quick Princeton spurt to close the deficit in the third quarter were gone less than three minutes into the second half as Guida and Brown both scored early to push the lead to 11-5 and Brandon Benn extended his goal-scoring streak to 20 games four minutes after Brown s goal to make it Princeton finally made its inevitable run late in the third quarter when senior midfielder Tom Schreiber sandwiched goals around a Ryan Ambler strike to make it 12-8 at the end of period. The Tigers got their three goals in a span of just under four minutes. As they had in each of the first three quarters, the Blue Jays scored in the first two minutes of the fourth quarter and actually got a pair less than a minute apart as Brown s fourth of the game and an unassisted goal by freshman Cody Radziewicz extended the lead to 14-8 with just under 13 minutes on the clock. A Justin Murphy goal seven seconds after the Radziewicz strike and Brown s career-high fifth of the game closed out the scoring before seven minutes elapsed in the final period.

35 2014 Johns Hopkins Men s Lacrosse Notes Game-by-Game Recaps Princeton outshot the Blue Jays 37-35, but Johns Hopkins senior goalie Eric Schneider posted 13 saves, including several point-blank stops at key points during the Blue Jays 8-1 run that kept momentum on JHU s side. Brown added three assists to his career-high five goals for a personal best eight points in the victory. Stanwick added three goals and two assists and Guida (2g, 2a) and Reed (2g, 1a) also registered multi-point games. Junior Drew Kennedy was 14-of-26 on faceoffs and grabbed 10 ground balls. Schreiber paced the Tigers with three goals and Ambler added two goals and three assists, but the Tigers scored on just five of 25 shots over the final three quarters and scored consecutive goals just once over the final 54 minutes of the game in falling for the first time this season. Notes: Johns Hopkins starting attack combined for nine goals and five assists; Princeton s starting attack combined for two goals and three assists Johns Hopkins head coach Dave Pietramala is now one win shy of career victory number 174 The visiting team has now won six consecutive games in the Johns Hopkins- Princeton series (in games played on campus). #5 Johns Hopkins (4-0) /15 #10 Princeton (2-1) /9 Goals: J: Brown-5, Stanwick-3, Guida-2, Reed-2, Benn, Cattoni, Radziewicz. Game 5 #3 Johns Hopkins-15 March 8, 2014 UMBC-8 UMBC Stadium BALTIMORE, MD In a game of runs, the third-ranked Johns Hopkins men s lacrosse team outscored host UMBC 6-0 in the fourth quarter to break open a close game and pick up a 15-8 victory Saturday afternoon. The Blue Jays led big early, watched as the Retrievers got back into it with a strong second quarter and then pulled away to improve to 5-0 on the year. UMBC slips to 2-2 and had a two-game winning streak snapped. The win is the 175th in the coaching career of Johns Hopkins head coach Dave Pietramala, who is now at Johns Hopkins and overall. Nursing a 9-8 lead entering the fourth quarter, the Blue Jays needed just six minutes to extend the lead to four as Rob Guida, Brandon Benn and Wells Stanwick all scored in a span of just 2:26 to make it Guida blew home a 14-yarder off an assist from Connor Reed before Benn took a nifty feed from Stanwick on the doorstep and scored from in close. When the Retrievers went offsides less than a minute later, Benn found Stanwick behind the defense on a quick restart and Stanwick beat a defenseless Connor Gordon to polish off the three-goal flurry. The 12-8 lead held for nearly four minutes before another three-goal run for Johns Hopkins put the game away. Sophomore Holdden Cattoni dodged from behind the goal to ignite the spree, which also included goals from Stanwick and Benn and required just 39 seconds to complete. Cattoni got the assist on Benn s goal, which came on the extra-man and closed the scoring with 5:01 to play. A fourth-quarter surge didn t look like it would be needed early on as the Blue Jays scored three goals before the game was six minutes old as sophomore Ryan Brown wrapped goals around a Benn strike before UMBC got one back on a goal from Ty Kashur midway through the quarter. The 3-1 lead held for more than three minutes before Reed ignited a 4-0 Hopkins run that took less than three minutes and extended the lead to 7-1. Stanwick, Benn and Brown all added goals during the spree and Cattoni assisted on two of those to give the Blue Jays the six-goal lead. The Retrievers got back in the game on the strength of Pat Young s shooting and Gordon s play in the goal. Young scored three straight UMBC goals between the end of the first quarter and the middle of the second to make it 7-4 before Matt Gregoire and Young added tallies in the final 3:32 of the period to make it 7-6 at the half. While Young s first-half heroics were the headline, Gordon s play at the other end was just as spectacular. He made seven second-quarter saves as the Blue Jays went cold after Brown s goal with 44 seconds left in the first quarter. After going scoreless in the second quarter, the Blue Jays needed just nine seconds to open the scoring in the third quarter as Benn was on the backend of a fastbreak off the faceoff that junior Drew Kennedy jump-started with a clean win. The lead was 9-6 just 72 seconds later when Guida fired one home off an assist from Cattoni, but back-to-back goals from UMBC s Jack Gannon made it 9-8 at the end of the third quarter. Gannon s goals came nearly nine minutes apart, but Gordon posted two saves after Guida s goal to keep the Blue Jays off the board for the rest of the third quarter. Senior goalie Eric Schneider made two big saves in the final minutes of the third quarter for the Blue Jays, who held the 9-8 lead until Guida s goal just over three minutes into the fourth quarter ignited the game-ending six-goal run for Johns Hopkins. The run was fueled by Kennedy, who won 5-of-6 faceoffs in the fourth quarter and finished 18-of-26 with 12 ground balls on the day. Benn matched his career high with five goals and added an assist for a personalbest six points, while Stanwick (3g, 3a) and Brown (3g, 1a) rounded out an effort that saw JHU s starting attack combine for 11 goals and five assists. Cattoni s four assists and five points are both career highs; his four assists today are one more than he had in his career entering the game. He teamed with Guida and Reed to give the Blue Jays first midfield a combined four goals and five assists. Young s four goals tied his career high and came in a span of less than 15 minutes of game time. Gannon added two goals and two assists, but no other Retriever managed a multi-point game. Gordon finished with 16 saves, several of which were of the spectacular variety. Johns Hopkins will return to action next Saturday when the Blue Jays welcome 11th-ranked Syracuse to Homewood Field. Notes: Johns Hopkins is now 12-0 all-time against UMBC and 63-8 under head coach Dave Pietramala against teams from the state of Maryland Benn s five goals extend his goal-scoring streak to 21 games The Blue Jay defense held UMBC scoreless for the final 18:45; this is the sixth time this season Johns Hopkins has held the opposition scoreless for 15 minutes or longer. #3 Johns Hopkins (5-0) /15 UMBC (2-2) /8 Goals: J: Benn-5, Stanwick-3, Brown-3, Guida-2, Cattoni, Reed. Game 6 #10 Syracuse-12 March 15, 2014 #2 Johns Hopkins-10 Homewood Field BALTIMORE, MD In a game that saw the 10th-ranked Syracuse and secondranked Johns Hopkins men s lacrosse teams combine for five three-goal runs, it was the Orange that scored two of the final three goals of the game to slip past the Blue Jays, 12-10, at Homewood Field Saturday afternoon. Syracuse, which led by four on two different occasions, improves to 4-2 with its second straight win, while the Blue Jays had a season-opening five-game winning streak snapped and slip to 5-1. Syracuse led 3-1 and 7-3 in the first half and carried a 10-6 lead into the fourth quarter, but the Blue Jays needed just six seconds of the final period to score as sophomore Ryan Brown s sixth goal of the day came after Drew Kennedy won the faceoff cleanly and found Brandon Benn, who skipped a pass to Brown on the back side and Brown shoveled one past Dominic Lamolinara to make it It took Brown and the Blue Jays less than two more minutes to complete their second three-goal run of the game as Brown fired one into an open net from midfield and then scored his eighth of the game off a nifty pass from sophomore Connor Reed to make it The Orange, as they did throughout the game, answered as Nick Weston fired a 10-yarder past Johns Hopkins goalie Eric Schneider after Billy Ward s skip pass

36 2014 Johns Hopkins Men s Lacrosse Notes Game-by-Game Recaps from the opposite goal line eluded the Blue Jay defense. Weston s goal came with the stall warning on. When the Blue Jays got a goal from sophomore Holden Cattoni just 48 seconds later, and with Kennedy dominating the game on faceoffs, the Blue Jays appeared to have the momentum with just over nine minutes remaining. Two key turnovers for Johns Hopkins, one in the offensive zone with just over five minutes to play and another on a failed clear after a Schneider save with just more than three minutes on the clock, proved crucial and the Orange eventually got the insurance goal when Dylan Donahue isolated behind the goal and got just far enough above the goal line before firing one to the top shelf to account for the final scoring. Syracuse threatened to put the game away early as Brown s first of the game less than two minutes in was answered by Kevin Rice, Scott Loy and Donahue to give SU a 3-1 lead at the end of the first quarter. Brown and freshman Nick Fields sandwiched goals around a Ward strike in the first five minute of the second quarter before Loy, Dylan Maltz and Henry Schoonmaker struck for unassisted goals in the final 7:05 of the second quarter to give the Orange a 7-3 halftime lead. After winning 8-of-11 first-half faceoffs, Kennedy went to work early in the third quarter to fuel a three-goal run that pulled the Blue Jays within 7-6 less than six minutes into the second half. All three goals were scored by Brown, including an extra-man tally off an assist from John Crawley that made it a one-goal game with 9:13 left in the period. The one-goal deficit was four just over five minutes later as Ward jump-started SU s third three-goal run of the game as he had time and room to unload off an assist from Loy and he fed Donahue in the slot for another goal two minutes later to make it 9-6. When defenseman Matt Harris scored on a fastbreak off a quick outlet from Lamolinara a short time later, it appeared the Orange were safe with the 10-6 lead entering the final period. Brown s three-goal flurry to open the fourth quarter gave the Blue Jays a chance late, but they never pulled even after falling behind 2-1 early and Weston and Donahue s strikes in the final 10:26 proved to be the difference. Brown s eight goals are one shy of the Johns Hopkins single-game record of nine. William Logan holds the record with a nine-goal effort in a 13-1 win against Virginia on April 2, Stanwick added two assists and Kennedy finished 21-of- 25 on faceoffs with a career-high 15 ground balls; Kennedy s 21 faceoff wins are also a career high. A balanced Syracuse attack was paced by Donahue, who totaled three goals and one assist. Loy and Ward both scored twice and eight different players found the back of the net for SU, which also got 11 saves from Lamolinara and committed just seven turnovers in the game. Johns Hopkins will return to action on Saturday, March 22 when the Blue Jays travel to Charlottesville to take on Virginia. Notes: Ryan Brown has 16 goals and 20 points in his last three games JHU was 2-for-2 on extra-man chances and is now 7-of-14 on the year The Blue Jays nation-best six-game winning streak came to a halt with today s loss. #10 Syracuse (4-2) /12 #2 Johns Hopkins (5-1) /10 Goals: S: Donahue-3, Ward-2, Loy-2, Rice, Schoonmaker, Dy. The Blue Jays trailed early, but rallied to take three, two-goal leads in the second half. After JHU built a 7-6 halftime lead, the teams traded the first five goals of the second half with Hopkins taking leads of 8-6, 9-7 and The final two-goal margin came with 11:45 remaining in the fourth quarter when Ryan Brown completed his hat trick after scooping up a loose ball and scoring from in tight. The two-goal lead could have been three a minute later, but Virginia s Matt Barrett made a kick save on a Holden Cattoni blast from the side and the Cavaliers took advantage of the opportunity with back-toback goals by Ryan Lukacovic in a four-minute span midway through the period to make it Lukacovic nearly gave the Cavs an lead with just over three minutes remaining, but Schneider stopped him up high and the Blue Jays cleared. After working through a timer-on situation and calling timeout with just under a minute remaining in regulation, the Blue Jays turned the ball over and gave Virginia one final chance in regulation. A Mark Cockerton shot whistled wide in the final 10 seconds, setting the stage for Coholan s overtime heroics. The Blue Jays spotted the Cavaliers a pair of early three-goal leads as Virginia scored three goals before the game was four minutes old and answered Wells Stanwick s first goal for the Blue Jays with a Coholan unassisted tally to grab a 4-1 lead with 6:47 remaining in the first quarter. The Blue Jays turned to their extra-man unit to hop back into the game as they used three straight EMO goals in a span of less than three minutes to knot the game at 4-4 by the end of the first quarter. Cattoni was on the back end of some great ball movement and beat Barrett from 10 yards out with a low shot to make it 4-2 at the five-minute mark. Cattoni and Brandon Benn netted EMO goals during a two-minute non-releasable penalty on the Cavaliers late the quarter to account for the tie at the end of the opening 15 minutes. While the pace slowed slightly in the second quarter, the Cavaliers did grab leads of 5-4 and 6-5 in the opening eight minutes as James Pannell and Coholan sandwiched goals around another Benn strike before the Blue Jays got goals from freshman John Crawley and Brown in the final four minutes to carry a 7-6 lead into the half. Brown s goal came with just 38 seconds left in the half and was JHU s fourth extra-man goal of the first half. Brown and Benn both posted three goals and one assist and senior Rob Guida added four assists to lead the way for the Blue Jays, who also got a 16-of-25 performance from junior Drew Kennedy on faceoffs. Coholan s three goals paced the Cavaliers, who also got two goals and one assist from Pannell and two goals from both Cockerton and Laukacovic. Barrett posted 16 saves in goal for Virginia, which snapped a threeg-game losing streak to the Blue Jays with the victory. #9 Johns Hopkins (5-2) /10 #10 Virginia (7-2) /11 Goals: J: Brown-3, Benn-3, Cattoni-2, Stanwick, Crawley. 37 2014 Johns Hopkins Men s Lacrosse Notes Game-by-Game Recaps Game 8 #5 North Carolina-13 March 29, 2014 #9 Johns Hopkins-9 Homewood Field BALTIMORE, MD The fifth-ranked North Carolina men s lacrosse team used a 6-0 run that bridged the second and fourth quarters to turn a 7-4 deficit into a 10-7 lead and the Tar Heels never let ninth-ranked Johns Hopkins closer than two goals in the final quarter of a 13-9 victory at rain-swept Homewood Field Saturday afternoon. North Carolina picked up its third straight victory and improves to 8-2 on the year, while the Blue Jays drop their third consecutive game and slip to 5-3. Johns Hopkins led 7-4 after the second of Brandon Benn s two goals with 5:27 remaining in the second quarter and the Blue Jays still led 7-5 at the half after Chad Tutten s unassisted goal with 90 seconds remaining in the first half for North Carolina. Johns Hopkins had a golden opportunity to push the lead to three with an extra-man opportunity early in the third, but the Tar Heels held them off and sliced the deficit to 7-6 at the 11:19 mark as Ryan Creighton got loose down the middle and Shane Simpson hit him in stride for an easy goal. The Blue Jays held the one goal lead for just under five minutes before Jimmy Bitter fired one home to tie the score. Joey Sankey assisted on the goal after he fired a pass from behind the cage with the Blue Jay defense caught out in front. When Sankey scored while diving from behind the goal at the 3:02 mark, the Tar Heels had their first lead since early in the first quarter; a lead they wouldn t relinquish. Steve Pontrello and R.G. Keenan scored back-to-back goals in a span of just five seconds to give UNC a 10-7 lead the end of three quarters. Keenan s goal came after he cleanly won the faceoff following Pontrello s goal. Johns Hopkins had a chance to get one back in the final 10 seconds of the third quarter, but Kieran Burke went low to stop Benn from eight yards out. Still, JHU trimmed the deficit to 10-8 less the two minutes into the fourth quarter when Connor Reed dodged and drew a slide before dishing to Ryan Brown, who wasted no time lifting a shot past Burke. Any hopes for a Blue Jay comeback were dashed in the middle of the quarter when Sankey scored twice in a three-minute span with both goals coming with the stall warning on. A Simpson goal into an empty net while the Blue Jays were chasing was answered by a Holden Cattoni strike in the final five minutes to account for the final scoring. A back-and-forth first quarter saw the Blue Jays grab leads of 2-1, 3-2, and 4-3 with the first of Cattoni s three goals with 22 seconds remaining giving the Blue Jays the 4-3 lead at the end of the opening 15 minutes. A Pontrello goal less than two minutes into the second quarter forced the fourth of four first-half ties before Cattoni s second goal of the game ignited a three-goal run for the Blue Jays that gave them the 7-4 lead. The first of Benn s two strikes came just 38 seconds after Cattoni s as Wells Stanwick found him alone behind the defense in transition and his second goal four minutes later from in tight closed the three-goal run. Tuton s goal came four minutes later and ignited the six-goal run that turned the game in the Tar Heels favor. Sankey scored a game-high five goals and added two assists to match his personal best with seven points, while Pontrello (2 goals) and Simpson (1 goal, 1 assist) were UNC s other multi-point producers. Burke posted 10 saves, including several key stops, including the one on Benn late in the third quarter. Cattoni led the Blue Jays with his first career hat trick, while Benn (2g), Stanwick (1g, 2a) and Brown (1g, 1a) all added multi-point games for the Blue Jays. Junior Drew Kennedy was again spectacular on faceoffs for Johns Hopkins as he won 20- of-26 with 13 ground balls. Johns Hopkins will return to action on Friday, April 4 as the Blue Jays will welcome Albany to Homewood Field for the second of three straight home games. Notes: Kennedy and Sankey each earned the Chris Gardner Player of the Game award. The award is given each year at a selected home game in honor of Gardner, a member of the 1996 Johns Hopkins men s lacrosse team who was diagnosed with cancer while on the team. He lost his battle in 1997 and his mom, Kaki Van Haverbeke, returns each year to present the awards in his honor. An extra dollar is added to the cost of all tickets for the game with the money raised donated to the Johns Hopkins Children s Center, where Gardner received his treatment. #5 North Caorlina (8-2) /13 #9 Johns Hopkins (5-3) /9 Goals: N: Sankey-5, Pontrello-2, Simpson, Bitter, Creighton, Tutton, Keenan, Matthai. Game 9 #16 Albany-8 April 4, 2014 #10 Johns Hopkins-13 Homewood Field BALTIMORE, MD The 10th-ranked Johns Hopkins men s lacrosse team jumped out to a 9-1 halftime lead and never let visiting Albany get closer than five in the second half as the Blue Jays posted a 13-8 victory over the Great Danes at Homewood Field Friday night. The win snaps a three-game losing streak for Johns Hopkins, which improves to 6-3 on the year. Albany, which had won four of its last six, slips to 4-5. The eight goals Albany scored are nearly eight less than it was averaging entering the game (15.75) and its fewest since March 2, 2013, when the Danes fell to Yale, The Blue Jays wasted little time jumping in front as they scored seven unanswered goals to open the game to fuel the 9-1 advantage at the half. Sophomore Ryan Brown scored all three of his goals in the opening 16 minutes and junior Wells Stanwick matched his career high with five assists before the game was 20 minutes old. Capitalizing on 14 Albany turnovers in the first half, the Blue Jays crafted a 27-3 advantage in shots in the opening 30 minutes with only an extra-man strike by Bennett Drake midway through the second quarter getting the Danes on the board. A game-opening goal by junior Michael Pellegrino on a quick restart from midfield opened the scoring for the Blue Jays, who got two goals each from Brandon Benn and Holden Cattoni in the first half to go along with Brown s hat trick. An extra-man goal by Benn just 29 seconds into the second half pushed the lead to 10-1, but Albany made its inevitable run to slice that deficit to 10-5 at the end of three quarters. Ryan Feuerstein opened the four-goal run for the Great Danes as Lyle Thompson found him from behind the goal and Feuerstein had time and room from 12 yards out less than a minute after Benn s goal to ignite a four-goal run. Eric Scala added an extra-man goal of his own 70 seconds later and a Miles Thompson goal just over two minutes after that made it 10-4 with more than 10 minutes remaining in the third quarter. Albany had a golden opportunity to cut into the deficit more midway through the period as the Danes had a two-man advantage for a full minute, but the Blue Jay defense held and more than eight minutes passed after the Miles Thompson goal before Ty Thompson scored with exactly two minutes remaining in the third quarter to account for the 10-5 score entering the fourth quarter. Any hopes for an Albany comeback were dashed when more than five scoreless minutes elapsed to open the final period. That was followed by consecutive Hopkins goals in a 59-second span to push the lead to Cattoni completed his second straight hat trick with an extra-man goal off an assist from Stanwick and senior Phil Castronova added a transition goal off a feed from Pellegrino to account for the two-goals that built the lead back to seven. Albany tallied three of the final four goals of the game, with only Cattoni s career-high fourth of the game in that time for the Blue Jays. Lyle and Miles Thomp-

38 2014 Johns Hopkins Men s Lacrosse Notes Game-by-Game Recaps son both scored highlight-reel goals, while Feuerstein s unassisted goal off a restart in the final two minutes closed out the scoring. Cattoni, who never had a hat trick before last week, added his second straight with the four-goal effort, while Stanwick s six assists are a career-high and the most by a Johns Hopkins player since Dan Denihan had six at Hofstra on March 11, Brown (3g, 1a) and Benn (3g) teamed with Stanwick to give the Blue Jays starting attack six goals and seven assists. The 13-point effort marks the fifth time in nine games the trio has combined for 12 points or more. Albany s dynamic attack unit of Lyle, Miles and Ty Thompson totaled four goals and five assists, but the early turnovers and halftime deficit were more than they could overcome. Sophomore Blaze Riorden posted 12 saves in goal and Connor Russell did a solid job on faceoffs by taking 14-of-24. Johns Hopkins will return to action on Saturday, April 12 when the Blue Jays welcome Maryland to Homewood Field for the 111th renewal of the greatest rivalry in college lacrosse. Game 10 #3 Maryland-6 April 12, 2014 #9 Johns Hopkins-11 Homewood Field BALTIMORE, MD The ninth-ranked Johns Hopkins men s lacrosse team used a 4-0 run that bridged the second and third quarters to turn a 2-1 lead into a 6-1 advantage and the Blue Jays never let third-ranked Maryland get closer than three in the final 25 minutes as JHU scored an 11-6 victory before a Homecoming crowd of 9,553 at Homewood Field on Saturday. In winning the 111th meeting between the two teams, Johns Hopkins improves to 7-3 on the year, while Maryland had a twogame winning streak snapped and slips to 9-2. Johns Hopkins held Maryland off the board for more than 20 minutes to open the game, but a Joe LcCascio extra-man goal at the 9:48 mark of the second quarter sliced a 2-0 deficit in half. On the strength of a stingy defense and the play of goalie Eric Schneider, the Blue Jays would hold the Terps scoreless for more than 18 minutes after Lo- Cascio s goal and Hopkins used the four-goal spurt to take control. An extra-man goal by senior Brandon Benn with 2:46 remaining in the first half was the first of three goals the Blue Jays would score in the final three minutes of the second quarter as the 2-1 lead swelled to 5-1 by halftime. Junior Wells Stanwick added an extra-man goal off a slick cross-crease pass from sophomore Holden Cattoni 50 seconds after Benn s goal and Stanwick then snuck one just inside the near post from goal-line extended with eight seconds left in the opening half. A transition goal by Benn just 2:32 into the third quarter pushed the lead to 6-1, a score that held until Rustin Bryant ended the scoring drought for the Terps with an extra-man goal of his own with just under six minutes remaining in the period. Stanwick closed out the third-quarter scoring by completing his hat trick in the final 90 seconds of the period before Bryant added his second man-up goal of the game early in the fourth quarter to make it 7-3. The Blue Jays largest lead of the game came midway though the final quarter when Cattoni and sophomore Ryan Brown tallied unassisted goals in a span of just over two minutes. Cattoni surprised Maryland goalie Niko Amato with a 10-yard shot on a dodge from the top, while Brown beat Amato with a dodge from behind the goal to give the Blue Jays what appeared was a comfortable 9-3 lead with eight minutes to play. The six-goal lead was sliced in half in less than three minutes as Henry West scored back-to-back goals in a span of just 45 seconds and LoCascio added another extra-man goal with just over five minutes left in the fourth quarter to make things interesting. Maryland, which got a 15-of-21 performance on faceoffs from junior Charlie Raffa, had possession with a chance to cut the deficit further, but Schneider made a pair of big saves, including one on LoCascio from in tight, to preserve the threegoal lead. The Blue Jays milked the clock late and scored a pair of goals in the final 3:21 in timer-on situations as Brown capped a long possession with strike from in-tight on a slick feed to the crease from Stanwick and freshman John Crawley added his second goal of the game in the closing minute to account for the final scoring. The 11 goals, which match the most allowed by the Terps this season, were spread among five Johns Hopkins goal-scorers with Stanwick leading the way with his three. Benn, Brown, Cattoni and Crawley all added two goals with Stanwick (3g, 1a) and Cattoni (2g, 2a) registering four-point games on the day. Schneider and the Blue Jays defense were on-point, especially in six-on-six situations, as Maryland didn t score an even-strength goal until the 53rd minute of the game and finished with just two in the game. The Terps did cash in on 4-of-6 extraman chances, but a 12-save performance from Schneider and 12 caused turnovers by the Blue Jays were more than they could overcome. LoCascio, West and Bryant all scored twice for the Terps, who also got three assists from senior midfielder Mike Chanenchuk, but Maryland s starting attack managed just one assist and no goals on seven shots against JHU s starting defense of senior Jack Reilly, Rob Enright and John Kelly. That trio combined for 10 ground balls and four caused turnovers. Johns Hopkins has less than 48 hours until it returns to action as the Blue Jays travel to Mount St. Mary s for a game against the Mountaineers on Monday, April 14 (4 pm). The game was originally scheduled for March 4, but was postponed due to snow. Back-to-back goals in the first three minutes of the second quarter doubled the lead as junior Wells Stanwick found seniors Brandon Benn and Kevin Interlicchio alone on the crease in a 48-second span to push the lead to 4-0. Johns Hopkins controlled a majority of the possession in the first half by winning 8-of-10 faceoffs and slowly began to find seams in the Mount zone. Benn added his

A transition goal by freshman Nick Fields off the ensuing faceoff accounted for an 8-0 Blue Jay lead at the half. The lead swelled to 12-0 by late in the third quarter as freshman Cody Radziewicz, junior Brady Faby, Interlicchio and Holden Cattoni all scored in a span of less than eight minutes to build the 12-goal lead. The Mountaineers finally broke through in the final seconds of the third quarter as Bubba Johnson beat Blue Jay goalie Eric Schneider with a low shot off an assist from Kyle McDonough and the Mount made it two straight at the 10:29 mark of the fourth quarter when Clayton Wainer scored from the wing. Both teams substituted liberally in the fourth quarter with Johns Hopkins freshman attackman Jack Grass doing most of the damage with three goals and one assist in the final nine minutes of the game. Sophomore Liam Giblin and senior Greg Edmonds also scored in the final quarter for the Blue Jays, who played a total of 45 players in the game. Johns Hopkins held decided advantages in shots (57-14), ground balls (47-19) and faceoffs (18-5) and matched a season high with 12 caused turnovers. Mount St. Mary s goalie Chris Klaiber played well in goal for the Mount as his 19 saves were just one shy of his career high. Stanwick paced the Blue Jays with a career-high-tying six assists, while Benn and Grass both added hat tricks. Four Blue Jay goalies combined for six saves with Schneider playing 45 minutes and stopping three shots. Johns Hopkins will return to action on Friday, April 18 when the Blue Jays hit the road again at Navy. Faceoff is set for 7 pm. Game 12 #6 Johns Hopkins-6 April 18, 2014 Navy-5 Navy-Marine Corps Stadium ANNAPOLIS, MD -- The sixth-ranked Johns Hopkins men s lacrosse team capped a tough stretch of three games in seven days with a gutty 6-5 win at Navy before a crowd of 8,655 at Navy-Marine Corps Stadium Friday night. The Blue Jays previously topped Maryland (11-6) and Mount St. Mary s (17-2) to open the three-game run and the Midshipmen gave them all they could handle before Hopkins forced a late turnover and ran out the clock to run its winning streak to four games. In a game that saw both teams score just twice in the second half, it was Navy that had momentum and possession late, but a pair of big plays - a save by senior Eric Schneider on a left-handed runner by Gabe Voumard and a deflected pass by junior co-captain Michael Pellegrino that eventually gave the Blue Jays possession in the final 15 seconds - proved to be the difference. Schneider bailed the Blue Jays out with his 17th save on Voumard s shot with 1:01 remaining as he swept across the field and got his hands free from 12 yards out. Still, the Blue Jays weren t out of danger as they failed to clear the ball cleanly and Navy regained possession and called timeout with 34 seconds remaining. The Midshipmen worked the ball around to Schneider s left, but an Austin Heneveld pass to the middle was deflected by Pellegrino and junior John Kelly came up with the ground ball near midfield before Navy was called for a hold with 12 seconds remaining that effectively sealed the win for the Blue Jays. Johns Hopkins never trailed in the game, but the Blue Jays could never quite put the Midshipmen away and needed the late-game heroics of Schneider, Pellegrino and the defense to seal the victory. It took less than a minute for Hopkins to open the scoring as Brandon Benn finished from in tight on a nifty feed to the crease from Wells Stanwick. Voumard answered just under three minutes later as he had time and room from 12 yards and beat Schneider up high. That score held until early in the second quarter, when Hopkins took a two-goal lead on the strength of back-to-back goals by Benn in a span of just 28 seconds. He scored from the wing at the back end of a transition chance that was jump-started by a Schneider save and sophomore Connor Reed then drew a slide off a dodge and found Benn alone five yards to the right of goalie John Connors, who gave up the inside post as Benn completed his 18th career hat trick. T.J. Hanzsche and Tucker Hull wrapped goals around an extra-man tally by Ryan Brown for the Blue Jays to account for a 4-3 score at the half and Hopkins pushed that lead to three goals less than seven minutes into the third quarter as Holden Cattoni blew a low shot past Connors off a feed from Reed and Benn found the same spot midway through the period to make it 6-3. The three-goal cushion was down to two when Sam Jones found the top corner from straight away in an extra-man situation with 5:22 remaining in the third and Hull added his second of the game nearly 15 minutes later to make it 6-5 with 5:27 left in regulation. The Midshipmen fired four more shots at Schneider and the Blue Jay defense in the final four minutes, but two missed the mark and Schneider got the better of Hull and then Voumard to help seal Johns Hopkins ninth win of the season. Schneider s 17 saves are the second-highest total of his career and six of those 17 came in the final 15 minutes. He anchored a defense that held its third straight opponent to six goals or less. Benn s four goals push his career total to an even 100, which makes him the 17th player in school history to reach the century mark. Brown (1g, 1a) and Reed (2a) were the only other multi-point scorers for the Blue Jays. Navy got 14 saves from Connors and the Midshipmen held decided advantages in shots (46-29) and ground balls (27-10), but Schneider and the Blue Jay defense got the stops they needed down the stretch to close out the win and polish off the rugged seven-day run. #6 Johns Hopkins (9-3) /6 Navy (4-8) /5 Goals: J: Benn-4, Brown, Cattoni. Game 13 Villanova-7 April 23, 2014 #7 Johns Hopkins-13 Homewood Field BALTIMORE, MD The seventh-ranked Johns Hopkins men s lacrosse team outscored Villanova 5-0 over the final 22 minutes to break away from the visiting Wildcats as the Blue Jays picked up a 13-7 victory at Homewood Field Wednesday night. The win is the fifth straight for the Blue Jays, who improve to 10-3 on the year. Villanova slips to 5-8 with its second straight loss. The Blue Jays led 7-5 at the half, but the Wildcats got a Devin McNamara goal just 77 seconds into the second half to make it a one-goal game. After Ryan Brown extended the lead back to two with an goal in transition four minutes later, the Cats answered with a Jack Curran rip from the wing just inside the near post to make it 8-7 with 7:15 remaining in the third quarter. The one-goal lead ballooned to four by the end of the third quarter as Brown, Wells Stanwick and Brandon Benn all scored unassisted goals in the final 6:31 of the period to stake the Blue Jays to an 11-7 lead. The goals by Brown and Stanwick

40 2014 Johns Hopkins Men s Lacrosse Notes Game-by-Game Recaps came less than two minutes apart, while Benn s goal beat the buzzer at the end of the quarter after he got top-side on his defender 10 yards from the goal and to the right of goalie Dan Willis. Benn picked the far post with his buzzer-beater. Any hopes for a Villanova comeback were dashed by the middle of the final period as the Blue Jays methodically worked the clock to their advantage while getting four saves from goalie Eric Schneider in the period to extend Villanova s game-ending scoreless drought to 22:15, the third longest scoring drought for a Johns Hopkins opponent this season. Goals by Connor Reed midway through the period and Holden Cattoni in the final minute closed out the scoring for Johns Hopkins, which handed Dave Pietramala a victory in his 250th game as a collegiate head coach. While the Blue Jays ended strong it was Villanova that was quick out of the gate as the Cats jumped out to leads of 2-0 and 3-1 in the first eight minutes. Back-to-back goals by Johnny Gallaway in the first 2:24 prompted a quick Blue Jay timeout before Benn finally broke through for Hopkins with his first goal of the game at the 7:49 mark. Benn s strike was answered 49 seconds later by an extra-man goal from Kevin O Neil, but the first of Cattoni s three goals on the night late in the quarter jumped started a 6-0 Blue Jay run that took less than nine minutes. Cattoni s goal was followed 50 seconds later by the first of Rob Guida s two goals to draw the Blue Jays even at the end of the first quarter. The next four goals in the six goal run strikes by Cattoni and Guida and two extra-man goals by Stanwick came by the 8:23 mark of the second quarter and gave the Blue Jays a 7-3 lead and seemingly all the momentum. But Villanova, which had played nine games decided by two goals or less entering the game against the Blue Jays, sliced the four-goal deficit in half before intermission as Matt McIver and Austin Frederick scored back-to-back goals in a span of 75 seconds midway through the second quarter. That set the stage for the McNamara and Curran tallies in the third quarter that were wrapped around the first of Brown s two goals to make it 8-7. From there, the Blue Jays slowly pulled away to secure their seventh straight win in the series with the Wildcats. The Blue Jays starting attack and first midfield accounted for all 13 Johns Hopkins goals and two of the team s four assists in the game. Stanwick (3g, 1a) and Cattoni (3g) registered hat tricks, while Brown, Benn and Guida all scored twice. Schneider continued his recent surge in goal as he posted 11 saves on the night, while sophomore Craig Madarasz won 7-of-9 faceoffs and grabbed five ground balls for the Blue Jays, who held statistical advantages in shots (40-31), ground balls (35-29) and faceoffs (13-10). Gallaway was the only multi-goal scorer for Villanova, while McNamara added one goal and three assists for a team-high four points. Willis posted 12 saves in goal for the Wildcats, who also got a solid effort on faceoffs from Thomas Croonquist, especially in the first half. Croonquist finished 9-for-22, but was 7-for-14 in the first half before Madarasz came on to spark the Blue Jays at the X. Notes: The win was the 157th for Dave Pietramala as the head coach at Johns Hopkins he is just one win shy of tying Bob Scott s record for wins by a men s lacrosse coach at Homewood The 22:15 scoring drought for Villanova marks the 13th time this season JHU has held the opposition scoreless for a stretch of 15 minutes or longer Brandon Benn tied Mike Morrill for 12th place on JHU s career goal-scoring list with his two tallies tonight (102) With one assist tonight, Wells Stanwick is now tied with Del Dressel for 12th on JHU s career assist list (75). Game 14 #6 Johns Hopkins-10 May 3, 2014 #7 Loyola-13 Ridley Athletic Complex BALTIMORE, MD - The sixth-ranked Johns Hopkins men s lacrosse team trailed top-ranked Loyola 11-8 early in the fourth quarter when Blue Jay sophomore Holden Cattoni ripped a shot off the post. Just over a minute later and the two-goal swing was complete as the Greyhounds Brian Schultz got inside his defender to make it 12-8 with 11:39 on the clock. It took just 80 seconds for the `Hounds, and Schultz, to deliver another two-goal swing as senior goalie Jack Runkel stole one from freshman Cody Radziewicz on the doorstep and Schultz s unassisted goal 20 seconds later pushed the lead to 13-8 in what eventually became a Loyola victory before a sold out crowd at the Ridley Athletic Complex (6,000) Saturday afternoon. The win is Loyola s 15th straight and all but guarantees the Greyhounds a high seed in the upcoming NCAA Tournament. With a high RPI and strength of schedule, the Blue Jays should merit strong consideration for one the eight at-large spots in the tournament. It was all Hopkins in the first four minutes as senior midfielder Rob Guida sandwiched a pair of goals around a Brandon Benn tally in transition to stake the Blue Jays to a 3-0 lead. The Greyhounds needed just 45 seconds after Guida s second goal to slice the three-goal deficit to 3-2 as Brian Sherlock got them on the board 24 seconds after Guida s tally and Matt Sawyer added an extra-man goal 21 seconds later. Another Guida goal gave the Blue Jays a 4-2 lead at the end of the first quarter, but Loyola s offense got loose in the second quarter and a three-goal surge in the first seven minutes - on unassisted goals by Nikko Pontrello, Pat Laconi and Jeff Chase - gave the `Hounds a 5-4 lead midway through the period. Johns Hopkins forced ties at 5-5 and 6-6, but Sherlock got one to go after Johns Hopkins goalie Eric Schneider got a piece of his shot and Graham Savio scored off the ensuring faceoff to make it 8-6 at the half. The `Hounds threatened to run away with it early in the third quarter as Schultz got the first of his three on the day less than two minutes into the second half and Pontrello added an extra-man goal two minutes later, but a pair of Ryan Brown goals in a span of just 47 seconds cut the 10-6 lead to In a game of short runs, it was Loyola that would have the next one; the one that ultimately provided a margin that was too big to overcome for the Blue Jays. Pontrello s 50th goal of the season late in the third quarter made it 11-8 entering the final 15 minutes. From there, Schultz fired home the two goals that followed Cattoni s post and Runkel s big save on Radziewicz to extend the lead to Another extra-man goal by Brown and a Cattoni goal in the final three minutes closed out the scoring for Johns Hopkins, which slips to 10-4 with the loss and had its five-game winning streak snapped. Pontrello and Schultz both registered hat tricks and Justin Ward added four assists for the Greyhounds, who also got a 17-of-26 performance on faceoffs and the one goal from Savio. Loyola held advantages in shots (47-38), ground balls (52-33) and faceoffs (17-9) in topping the Blue Jays for the second straight year. Guida added an assist to go along with his first-quarter hat trick and Brown scored all three of his goals in the second half. Schneider posted 13 saves in goal for Johns Hopkins, which caused a season-high 14 turnovers (of Loyola s 21). Guida s only other career hat trick came in Johns Hopkins 10-9 win against then top-ranked Loyola in Notes: Wells Stanwick had two assists to push his season total to he is the first Johns Hopkins player with 40 assists since Dan Denihan had 40 in 2000 Ryan Brown (38 goals) & Brandon Benn (35) are the first Hopkins teammates to top 35 goals in one season since Bobby Benson (41) & Kyle Barrie (37) in #6 Johns Hopkins (10-4) /10 #1 Loyola (15-1) /13 Goals: J: Guida-3, Brown-3, Benn-2, Reed, Cattoni. 41 2014 Johns Hopkins Men s Lacrosse Notes Game-by-Game Recaps Game 15 #8 Johns Hopkins-14 May 11, 2014 #7 Virginia-8 Klockner Stadium NCAA First Round CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA On a day when he tied legendary coach Bob Scott s record for career coaching wins at Johns Hopkins, men s lacrosse coach Dave Pietramala acknowledged in the post-game press conference after Sunday s 14-8 Blue Jay victory against Virginia in the first round of the NCAA Tournament that the start of the game wasn t surprising. A two-goal spurt by the Cavaliers to open the game a surge that saw the Cavaliers fire off shot after shot against the Blue Jays was followed by a Pietramala-called timeout. When asked what he said in the timeout, he responded with a simple response; Relax. It was less than a minute later when senior Brandon Benn intercepted a Matt Barrett outlet pass at midfield and fired one home from 35 yards. After the hot start by the Cavaliers, it was just what the Blue Jays needed, and they capitalized on the deep breath they were able to take after Benn s goal and proceeded to score seven more before Virginia would score again. By then, Hopkins had scored on half of the 16 shots it had fired on Barrett, including three by Benn and two by junior Wells Stanwick, to open an 8-2 lead midway through the second quarter. For all the talk about the quick-strike Virginia offense, it was Hopkins that scored in bunches to craft what eventually became a 9-5 halftime lead. The early two-goal deficit was a distant memory after Benn s goal was followed by a nice finish inside by Ryan Brown, a nifty finish by senior Kevin Interlicchio and the first of Stanwick s career-high-tying five goals before the end of the first quarter. The 4-2 Blue Jay lead swelled to 8-2 in less than seven minutes of the second quarter. Two more strikes by Benn, the second career goal by senior Jack Reilly and another by Stanwick accounted for the final four goals in the 8-0 run, which gave Johns Hopkins the stunning six-goal lead. Virginia, a team known for making runs of its own, had the six-goal lead trimmed to four in a span of seven seconds as a Ryan Tucker laser at the 6:59 mark of the second quarter was followed by a Joe Lisicky goal off the ensuing faceoff to make it 8-4. A Connor Reed goal off an ally dodge was matched by a Pat Harbeson strike in the final 4:28 of the first half to account for the 9-5 Blue Jay lead at the half. As they did in the first half, the Cavaliers came out firing in the third quarter and it was 9:31 into the period when what was once a six-goal lead was down to one. An Owen Van Arsdale goal from the wing less than five minutes into the half was followed by Zed Williams and Tyler German tallies midway though the period to make it a 9-8 game with more than 20 minutes remaining in the game. The next goal, either a Virginia tally to knot the game or a Blue Jay strike to stem the tide, would be crucial. As it turned out, the more than 2,000 fans in attendance and the live national television audience on ESPN2, didn t have to wait long, just 11 seconds, to see who would get that crucial goal. Senior Rob Guida scooped up the ground ball off the faceoff following German s goal and sprinted into the offensive end, where he found Stanwick all alone 12 yards out to Barrett s right. Stanwick didn t hesitate when he took Guida s feed and blew one home. The most important goal of the game belonged to Johns Hopkins. Stanwick s goal ignited what eventually became a 5-0 game-ending run for Johns Hopkins. Benn completed his four-goal day when he got just enough separation in the high slot and polished off a long possession at the 10:52 mark. When Holden Cattoni ripped a shot past Barrett from the wing at the 7:05 mark, the Cavaliers were down 12-8 and were forced to chase. Stanwick made them pay twice down the stretch with his fourth and fifth goals to seal Hopkins largest margin of victory at Virginia since 1984 (16-9). Stanwick matched his career-high and the Johns Hopkins record for most goals in a first round game with his five, while he, Benn and Brown Johns Hopkins starting attack combined for 10 goals and one assist. Conversely, the Blue Jay defense held Virginia s starting attack unit to three goals and three assists and its first midfield to just one goal on 18 shots. Half of the six points accumulated by UVA s starting attack came before the game was five minutes old. The Johns Hopkins defense was paced by Eric Schneider s 12 saves, five of which came in the first quarter and four in the fourth. He backboned a unit that held the Cavaliers scoreless for more than 18 minutes at one point in the first half and more than 20 minutes to close the game. Helping the Blue Jays go on those extended runs was senior Drew Kennedy, who went 14-of-26 on faceoffs and grabbed 10 ground balls for Johns Hopkins. Cockerton (2g, 1a) and Van Arsdale (1g, 2a) were the only multi-point producers for Virginia, which got 10 saves from Barrett and a 12-for-25 effort on faceoffs from Mick Parks. The win was the 158th for Pietramala as the head coach at Johns Hopkins. That matches Scott s record, which was accumulated from and had stood unchallenged for 40 years. Johns Hopkins will take on defending national champion Duke in the quarterfinals next Sunday at Delaware. The Blue Devils topped Air Force, 20-9, this afternoon. Notes: Stanwick tied the JHU record for most goals in a first round NCAA game Benn (Stony Brook-2012) and Chris Boland (Brown-2009) also scored five goals in a first-round game Benn s four goals give him 108 in his career, which moves him into ninth place on JHU s career goal-scoring list Stanwick s assist was his 41st of the year, which ties him with Jack Thomas (1972) for the fifth-highest single-season total in school history Stanwick s 63 points this season are the most by a Johns Hopkins player since Dan Denihan had 65 in 2000 Today s game was the 100th NCAA Tournament game in Johns Hopkins history the Blue Jays improved to all-time in NCAA play The Johns Hopkins defense has now held the opposition scoreless for 15 minutes or longer 15 different times this season. #8 Johns Hopkins (11-4) /14 #7 Virginia (10-6) /8 Goals: J: Stanwick-5, Benn-4, Reed, Interlicchio, Brown, Cattoni, Reilly.
