Royals ROSTER Roster Review! A roster in sports is a list of members of a team or organization available for team selection. Use the roster to Learn about the TEAM ROSTER
Let s BEGIN Pop Quiz! USE YOUR ROYALs knowledge to ANSWER THEse QUESTIONS Test your team & league knowledge before beginning your lesson plan! What does WHL stand for? How many teams are in the WHL? How many teams are in the B.C. Division? How many Royals play on the ice at one time? How many seasons have the Royals been in Victoria? What is the name of the Royals famous mascot? What animal is on the Royals jersey crest? What arena do the Royals play in? WARM-up activity
Colour the Goalie Mask! USE YOUR Creative skills to Design a goalie mask Many hockey goaltenders have custom artwork on their helmets including imagery relating to their personal life or team. Art
Spot the Differences! Can you spot the seven Differences in gear? Goaltenders need different gear to be able to safely stop a puck throughout an entire game. Circle 7 pieces of equipment on the goalie that are different than on the player....now can you name 8 pieces of ANY hockey equipment? Physical Education
Hockey Terms! Hockey, like many sports, has its own set of words that relate to all the actions and objects on the ice during the game. Find the terms for each definition and solve the puzzle. Use the definitions to solve the puzzle When a player shoots a puck all the way down the ice. When a referee drops the puck and begins play. When a player breaks a rule during the game. When a player uses his stick to change the direction of an oncoming shot. The vehicle that cleans the ice. When one player takes out the feet of another. Disrupting or separating an opponent from the puck. Brandon Magee and Joe Hicketts have both shared duties as of the Royals this season. Terminology
Player Progress! Use whl.ca to find the Royals yearly stats Choose a Royals forward who has played three or more years in the WHL. Fill in the bar graph below to view the player s scoring progression since entering the league. Statistics
Know your Anatomy! Label the player s Commonly used muscles Various muscles are required to perform as a hockey player. Using the list of muscles provided, fill in the boxes with the correct letter to label the muscle area on the Royals forward. ANATOMY
Capital Cities! USE an atlas & Royals roster TO FILL IN THE BLANKS The Victoria Royals are proud to play in the capital city of British Columbia. Use an atlas, encyclopedia or the internet to label each player s birth country. If Canadian, label the capital city of their province and write down their birthplace. If international, label the capital city of the country they were born in and write down their birth place. GEOGRAPHY
Check your Grammar! Find & label the Grammar In the hockey sentences Hockey terms and phrases are full of grammar. Read about a Royals OT win in the paragraph below and then use your list of definitions to identify some common grammar terms! NOUN ADJECTIVE VERB This is the name of a person, place, thing, or idea. (Eg. Ice Skates or Puck) This is a word that describe or modifies another person or thing in a sentence. (Eg. Big or Cold) This is a word that conveys an action. (Eg. Jumping or Skating) Travis Brown looks towards the corner before firing a low, quick pass to his teammate Austin Carroll. Carroll surveys the ice and sees Brandon Magee cut to the net. The cross-crease pass from Austin is perfect and Brandon taps the frozen puck into a wide-open net giving the hometown Royals an overtime win! The fans in the crowd jump to their feet with joy, and Marty the Marmot bangs loudly on his drum. What a game!! In the above paragraph: 1) Draw a circle around 3 Nouns. 2) Draw a square around 2 Adjectives. 3) Draw a line under 4 Verbs. Bonus Question! What are some other types of Grammar terms? Can you identify any in the sentences above? ENGLISH
Royals Research! Go to victoriaroyals.com to answer the questions Go to the or other hockey websites to answer the following questions. Computer skills
National Anthems! Translate the french & Find the words Before every hockey game the National Anthem of each team s home country is played. Canada is a bilingual country with English and French as our national languages. Use an English to French dictionary to look up the translated words and draw a line to them in the French Canadian version of the Anthem. French
Player Arithmetic! Use the royals roster to solve the equations Use a calculator & the provided Royals Roster to answer the skill testing questions. MATH
Hockey Chemistry! The periodic table contains all the elements that make up the earth and all matter. Use the periodic table on the next page to find the elements These elements come in the form of atoms, the most broken down form of matter. Each element has an atomic number, which is determined by the number of protons in the atom. When multiple atoms bond together chemically it becomes a molecule. When two or more different elements combine it is called a compound. EXAMPLE: Hockey players breath out C02, a chemical compound and molecule made up of two different atoms. PERIODIC TABLE ON NEXT PAGE... SCIENCE
Periodic Table! Use the periodic table to ANSWER the QUESTIONs on the previous page SCIENCE
