INTRODUCTION This guide will provide answers to most of the questions parents have when first enrolling a child in youth hockey in Park City including how to transition from Hockey Classes offered through the Park City Ice Arena to the Park City Ice Miners Youth Organization. This guide will help you understand the needs and expectations for your players based on their age and ability. You will learn how things work and where to go for more information. 3

HOW DOES MY KID START PLAYING HOCKEY What age should I start my child? If your child has never skated before, or is fairly new, he/she should start in Basic Hockey Skating at the Park City Ice Arena. The hockey coaches will help place your child in class based on their skill level. Full gear is required at every level and can be rented for a small fee. After your child has learned the basic skills of the Basic Hockey Skating program they will move onto the Learn to Play Hockey program. If you child has accomplished the skills mid-way through a session staff will try to place them in the appropriate class that season. How long are classes? The Basic Hockey Skating program is 30 minutes of instruction with 15 minutes of practice time. The Learn to Play Hockey is 45 minutes of instruction. Each program is once a week for five or six weeks. Summer classes are twice a week for 2 3 weeks. Who are the hockey coaches? All of the rink run classes are taught by Certified USA Hockey Coaches. 4

PARK CITY ICE MINERS HOCKEY PCIM Mission Statement The Park City Ice Miners is dedicated to providing a positive learning experience as we challenge our players to grow in every aspect of the game. It is our goal to develop character, sportsmanship in all players, coaches and parents, and physical fitness among youth in the northern Utah area; promote, encourage, and improve the standard of amateur ice hockey; associate with other ice hockey associations; expand the game of hockey on the Wasatch Back through public awareness and development of as many youth as possible; and to perform or participate in other activities that will aid in reaching these objectives. Short History of The Park City Ice Miners Park City Ice Miners (PCIM) is a 501(c)3 charitable organization registered under the name of Wasatch Back Amateur Hockey Association. PCIM was formed in 2007 shortly after the opening of the Park City Ice Arena, our home ice rink located in Park City, Utah. PCIM is affiliated with and operates under the guidelines of USA Hockey and the Utah State Amateur Hockey Association (UAHA). Games are conducted according to the rules of USA Hockey and UAHA. Registration The Ice Miners has an automated online registration system at the organizations website. All players must be registered online. In addition, all players must be registered with USA Hockey and this can be done at Installment payments and scholarships are available. 6

Programs PCIM offers several different programs for its members and provides options for all levels of play for both boys and girls of ages 18 and under. No hockey knowledge or skill is required to start with PCIM program. It is recommended that players interested in joining PCIM have some skating experience. The Park City Ice Arena offers several Learn To Skate and Learn To Play Hockey Programs. The Utah Amateur Hockey Association approves the youth sanctioned teams for each season. Once teams are approved, tryouts for the Tier 2 teams (advanced players) are held in June each year. Tryouts for the Travel teams (intermediate players)are held in August each year. Registration for the UYHL D2 teams (beginner to intermediate players) open in August. Below is the triangle that shows how the teams are laid out based on player skill (beginner to very advanced). 7

URL Division 1 and Division 2 The Utah Youth Hockey League is also known as the house or recreational league. Other member associations of the UYHL are Salt Lake City, Provo, Davis County, Logan, Vernal, and Ogden. This league is designed to provide a recreational level of play for ages 6U through 18U. The level of play is less competitive than the Tier and Travel teams but provides a great environment for participating and learning the game. The commitment level of this league typically involves 2 to 3 practices a week depending on age division and games on Saturday. UYHL Division 1 teams can participate in a maximum of 2 out of state tournaments. UYHL Division 2 teams will only play in-state games and tournaments. There are no tryouts for the UYHL Division 2 team. All players not playing on a Tier or Travel team are automatically placed on a UYHL Division 1 or Division 2 team depending on their ability. The season usually runs from the middle of October to playoffs in March. Certain teams have pre-season practices starting in September. This is a great place for a new player ages 6U to 14U to start with PCIM. Teams are selected to balance the strength of the teams within each age division. Fees for the UYHL teams are typically less than half of the fees for Travel and Tier teams. The following table provides an overview of the age divisions and levels available at PCIM. *Ages are determined by the age of the player on 12/31 of the year the season begins. Age Division Ages* Levels 6U 5 and 6 UYHL Division 2 8U 7 and 8 UYHL Division 2 10U 9 and 10 Travel, UYHL D1 & UYHL D2 12U 11 and 12 Travel, UYHL D1 & UYHL D2 14U 13 and 14 Tier 2, Travel, UYHL D2 16U 15 and 16 Tier 2, Travel 18U 17 and 18 Tier 2 8

Tier and Travel Teams PCIM provides Tier and Travel teams for ages 10U through 18U. Typically, there is one team at each level within an age group. Teams are formed based on the availability of players to make a team. The Tier 2 level is the most competitive (advanced players) followed by Travel (intermediate players), then URL Division 1 (beginner to intermediate players), then URL Division 2 (beginner to intermediate players). Travel teams are more competitive than D1 & D2 teams and require a larger commitment for players and parents. Travel teams will practice 3-4 times a week with games on select weekends. There may be occasional weekday games for Travel teams as well. Tier and Travel teams are selected according to ability. Tryouts for Tier 2 teams take place in June. Tryouts for Travel teams take place in August. Girls Teams All of our Tier, Travel and URL teams are co-ed. Girls are encouraged to join our URL teams and to try out for any of our Travel and Tier teams. In addition, girls only teams may be created depending on player interest and number of players available. 12U, 16U & 19U girls only teams are available in the state of Utah. Please contact the Director of Hockey for more information regarding the girls only teams. 9

UYHL D1, UTL and Tier 2 Team Selection Process UYHL D1, Travel, and Tier team selection is a competitive process. The Park City Ice Miners will hold Tier 2 team tryouts in June and the Travel team tryouts in August, prior to the start of each season. Tier, Travel and UYHL D1 teams usually consist of skaters with 1 or 2 goalies. Teams may have as few as 13 skaters, and as many as 18 players depending on level and age. The PCIM Season Charter, located on the website, goes into more details. Tier 2 and UTL Team Fees Tier and Travel team fees are higher than UYHL teams due to the increased number of practices and games. Tier and Travel team fees may adjust year to year slightly to reflect differing costs. Tier team costs are higher than Travel team costs as a Tier Team will typically have 4 practices a week and 36+ games where as a Travel team will have 3 practices per week and play 30+ games. You may hear the terms of A, AA, AAA tossed around while coaches or parents are talking about Tier and Travel teams. Tier 1 teams have been called AAA teams in the past, while Tier 2 teams have been called AA teams. Travel teams where called A and the UYHL Division 1 was called B. At this time, Park City does not have a Tier I team. These classifications are defined by USA Hockey and the Utah Amateur Hockey Association. 10

UYHL D1, Travel and Tier Team Season and Tournaments Our Tier and Travel team s season typically starts in September with pre-season practices. The official season runs October through March. The 14U, 16U and 18U Tier teams will play in a state playoff with the opportunity to qualify for the National Tournament. Practice and the National tournament will run into April if the teams qualify for the National tournament. Coaches choose tournaments throughout the season to attend. Tier 2 teams will typically have 6-7 tournaments and the majority of them will be outside the state of Utah. Travel teams will typically have 4-6 tournaments, some in state and some out of state. There may be 1 or 2 that are a 4-7 hour drive from Park City. Tournaments are typically held on holiday weekends such as Thanksgiving, Christmas, Martin Luther King, and Presidents Day weekends. Each tournament is usually 4 games and sometimes 5. Games usually start on Friday but some tournaments will have a game on Thursday with the other games being on the weekend. Players are responsible for their own travel, lodging and food while attending tournaments. 6U and 8U Programs Our 6U and 8U programs at Park City are run differently than the other age groups. The primary focus in the 6U and 8U Program is introducing the fundamentals and skill development while making it fun and creating a passion for the game. The 8U Program at PCIM Hockey Association follows the USA Hockey ADM (American Development Model). Please visit the USA Hockey link for more information on the ADM at 8U will practice twice a week and have Cross-Ice games once a week. In addition, there will be several Mite Jamborees where many teams will gather to play Cross-Ice games. 6U practice once a week and also have Cross-Ice games once a week. The 8U Program will set the foundation for the players' hockey development and prepare them to progress through the older age divisions (10U through 18U) Equipment is available to loan for the season for 6U and 8U kids. The equipment sets are first come first serve and include everything except for skates and athletic cup or pelvic protector. 11

Try Hockey for Free Try Hockey for Free sessions are designed to introduce kids to the great sport of hockey. PCIM partners with the Park City Ice Arena and USA Hockey to offer 1 or 2 Try Hockey for Free days a year. This is a great opportunity to see if your child has any interest in learning to play hockey. In addition, PCIM also offers several Bring a Friend to Hockey days where kids can bring a friend to try hockey for the day at no charge. Equipment for 6U and 8U kids is usually available at no charge Coaching Each year the Director of Hockey interviews and selects coaches for our program who are approved by the board. Each team is assigned a head coach and in some cases assistant coaches. Every coach (head coach and assistants) must meet the USA hockey requirements for certification and be registered with USA Hockey. The certification level(s) required varies depending on age level and skill level being coached. Additionally, PCIM conducts coaches meetings on a regular basis to provide additional guidance and education for its coaches. Coaches select their assistant coaches, who also follow the USA Hockey guidelines for certified levels on the bench and the USA Hockey coaching standards. All coaches and assistant coaches receive a background check through the state program each year. 12

Volunteers Like any youth organization a successful season at PCIM depends heavily on its volunteers. Each team must staff a team manager position. All parents and guardians of PCIM players will be asked to volunteer throughout the season. Certain positions such as Team Manager and Assistant Coach may receive a discount to their fees. The Team Manager is a key volunteer position and is appointed by each coach at the beginning of the year. The Team Manager is responsible for much of the administrative duties for a team. For each home game the team must provide a person to do score keeping, run the game clock and work the penalty box for their team. There is training available for score keeping and clock for those not familiar with these duties. In addition to game time volunteers, PCIM must staff its own tournaments with volunteers and that may include welcome desk, supervisors, hospitality table, merchandise sales and others. Tournaments Each year PCIM hosts two invitational tournaments for a variety of age groups and invites teams from around the country. These tournaments are hosted at the Park City Ice Arena and games are also held at other ice venues in Salt Lake City. The first tournament is at the beginning of November and the second tournament is at the end of March. 13

Jerseys and Apparel All players will receive one practice jersey and one pair of cotton practice socks per season. 6U, 8U and URL D2 teams may purchase or lease a red game jersey for the season. 6U and 8U players who do not plan on playing in Mite Jamborees do not need to have a red game jersey. For 6U, 8U and URL D2 teams, game jerseys can be ordered or leased on the website at time of registration. UYHL D1, UTL and Tier teams are required to purchase home and away (red and white) PCIM game jerseys. Jerseys can typically be used for two seasons if they are still in good condition and fit appropriately. Jersey numbers are assigned using the following method: Once a player in the PCIM organization has a number, they get to keep it until they choose to give it up. New players coming into the Park City Ice Miner s organization get to choose there number if available. The number must not be taken by any player in the PCIM organization for their birth year, the birth year above them and also below them. It is recommended that you register early to have the best chance of receiving the number your player would prefer! Player warm-ups are available for purchase and can be ordered on the team web site. 14

Fees PCIM fees vary based on age, level of play, and additional team costs. Typically fees for 6U are the lowest and Tier team fees are the highest. Fees vary slightly year to year and by age division. In addition, there is a small fee for tryouts to make the Tier, Travel and UYHL D1 teams. All fees are paid to Park City Ice Miners and are used to pay for ice-time, games, practices, and other per team costs associated with running the association. PCIM has a scholarship program where player s families can receive financial help from the association to pay for fees. Scholarships require a detailed application to be filled out regarding the families financial need. All scholarships are reviewed by the scholarship committee and are given out based solely on need. In addtion, all players are required to register every year with USA Hockey. Go to for more information. Schedules All Ice Miners games and practices are managed on our team web site at There are two options for viewing scheduldes: Master Schedule or Team schedule. Our calendar system will send automatic and text reminders for all games and practices. This option can be disabled when you login to our web site. To receive these notices, please make sure your information is correct on our web site. For Park City Ice Arena Schedules visit 15

Skates, helmet with facemask, gloves, shin pads, elbow pads, pants, shoulder pads, stick, mouth guard, athletic protector (cup) or pelvic protector. Skates also need periodic sharpening which can be purchased at the Park City Ice Arena. Each September, PCIM operates a Skate and Equipment swap. This is a great opportunity to get rid of old equipment and to purchase equipment and great prices. REQUIRED EQUIPMENT Selection of hockey equipment is a key issue for players, parents and coaches. When fitting hockey equipment, remember two important factors: 1) make certain the player is adequately protected and 2) be sure the fitting allows freedom of movement so the player can properly perform the necessary skills. By carefully considering these two factors, your child will be more comfortable and will have more fun playing hockey. The Park City Ice Arena rents equipment to those registered for rink run classes. The hockey equipment can be rented for $15 per 6 week session. Other retailers include Pure Hockey, Hockey Monkey, Ice Warehouse and Play It Again Sports. 16

Skates Purchase skates that will fit your child today with no more than ½ allowed for growth. Seek adequate protection in the ankle, toe and instep areas, improperly fitted skates will hamper your child s ability to skate. Helmet Must be of a design and construction approved by the Hockey Equipment Certification Council (HECC). Must be sized at the time of purchase to fit properly. The chin strap must always be fastened. Facemask Must be of a design and construction approved by the Hockey Equipment Certification Council (HECC). Mouthpiece A mouthpiece is required for all youth players through the Junior age classification. Stick Length should generally extend from the ice to the players chin (with skates on). Quality and price differ greatly, so the choice is yours. Shin Pads Check for proper lengths so they protect the knee and skin completely. Supporter and Cup Essential protective equipment. Gloves Check for proper fit with good finger and hand mobility. Shoulder Pads Adjust to fit the individual at the time of purchase. A fiber cap is extremely important in preventing shoulder separations and should extend to the tip of the shoulder. Pants/Breezers Held in proper position by suspenders. Pants provide protection for the lower spine, hips and thighs. Elbow Pads Properly fitted so they do not slide.. Watch a video on how to get dressed at: 17
