Mid-American Conference Tournament Champions in 2003, the Broncos are one of only three teams to advance to the league tourney every year since 1997 and have reached the semifinals in three of the last five campaigns. Since taking over the fledgling program, Haines has directed the Broncos to a plethora of team and individual successes, highlighted by the program s first-ever MAC Tournament title and NCAA Championship appearance in The Broncos posted an overall mark of in 2004 and recorded their sixth-straight campaign with a.500-orbetter record in league action. Seven of the team s wins came on the road (7-1-2), but the biggest victory came against Ball State at the WMU Soccer Complex in the opening round of the MAC Tournament. Three Broncos were named to the All-MAC squads and academic recognition, which has also become habit of Broncos student-athletes, was received by several players. In 2003, WMU posted a overall record, the most wins in school history, and was undefeated in 10 home matches. The team s accomplishments led to individual honors, including regional and national recognition. The Broncos posted an impressive win over Bowling Green in the championship match of the league tournament and went on to defeat nationally ranked Illinois on its home field in the opening round of the NCAA Championship. The 2002 season had several highlights, topped by the squad s first place finish at the inaugural Bronco Soccer Classic, which was hosted by WMU. The program once again finished among the top teams in the conference and advanced to the league tournament. WMU, known for its defensive strengths under Haines, provided record-setting offensive exploits in The Broncos tallied 13 goals en route to the Binghamton Adidas Soccer Classic title, the program s first-ever tournament championship of any kind. The Broncos posted an overall record of in 2000 and Haines guided the squad to its first-ever MAC Tournament Semifinals appearance. WMU finished overall in 1999, earning a spot in the Mid-American Conference Tournament. During the course of the season the Broncos collected wins over UNLV, Valparaiso and Northern Illinois. In 1998, the Broncos earned Haines his first career win at WMU with a 2-1 decision over Detroit in the second 13 match of the year. A 2-0 victory over rival Central Michigan highlighted a campaign that also included wins over Valparaiso, BGSU and Kent.
