CBS SPORTS NETWORK SETTING THE SCENE For the fourth time in the last seven years and first time since 2014, the Lehigh men s lacrosse team will play for a Patriot League Title when it faces top-seeded and No. 6/8 ranked Loyola on Sunday afternoon. Opening faceoff is set for 12 p.m. on CBS Sports Network. The fourth-seeded Mountain Hawks are coming off a thrilling 10-9 overtime victory against No. 11/13 Navy Friday night, as Lehigh s first overtime win since February of 2014 couldn t have come at a bigger time. Lehigh will be vying for its third league title in the last seven years after winning Patriot League Championships in 2012 and Junior Lucas Spence was the hero on Friday, posting game highs in goals (4) and points (5), none bigger than the unassisted game-winner just 42 seconds into overtime. It marked Lehigh s second overtime game of the year (also at North Carolina in February). Prior to Friday, the last time Lehigh won in overtime was Feb. 16, 2014 when it defeated Villanova in triple overtime, 7-6. With Friday s win, the Mountain Hawks improved to 10-6 on the season, their fourth time with double-figure wins in the last seven years (also 2012, 2013 and 2014). Prior to 2012, Lehigh had just four seasons with double-digit wins in the first 112 years of program history (1969, 1993, 1994 and 1997). Friday also marked Lehigh s third win against a nationally-ranked opponent this season, most since The 2018 Patriot League Tournament has played out similarly to the last time Lehigh made it this far, This year, the Mountain Hawks defeated Colgate in the quarterfinals (11-3) and Navy in the semifinals (10-9 in overtime). In 2014, Lehigh beat Navy in the quarterfinals (10-6) and Army in the semifinals (12-11). That semifinal win was a thriller as well, with Reid Weber scoring the game-winner with just 3.7 seconds remaining in regulation. Navy got off to a fast start on Friday, taking a 2-0 lead just 2:15 into the game. However, the Lehigh defense bore down the rest of the way. The Mountain Hawks held the Midshipmen scoreless for a stretch of 23:04 bridging the end of the first quarter through beginning of the third. Lehigh s offense scored four unanswered goals in that span to take a 6-4 lead. Navy did have a surge of four goals in the span of 7:57 in the third, but the Mountain Hawks allowed just one goal over the game s final 19:22 to pull out the thrilling victory. Spence s game-winning goal marked the 50th of his career as he has come on strong down the stretch to increase his season point total to 56 (34 goals, 22 assists). He has recorded multiple points in every game this season, with Friday marking his fourth game with 5+ points. Along with Spence s five points, junior Andrew Pettit recorded a hat trick while classmate Mickey Fitzpatrick had a goal and assist. Juniors scored nine of Lehigh s 10 goals while juniors Craig Chick and Eddie Bouhall combined for all five of the Mountain Hawks caused turnovers. For Chick, he reached 116 career caused turnovers to move into eighth place in NCAA history in that category. He s up to 39 on the season, needing one to tie and two to break his own school record (40) set last season. Sophomore Conor Gaffney was sensational down the stretch Friday, winning the final five faceoffs of the game to help Lehigh erase an 8-7 deficit after three quarters of play and score three of the game s final four goals. Gaffney finished 12-of-23 for the day, the second time this season he has won more than 50 percent against Navy s Joe Varello, who LEHIGH LACROSSE was named Patriot League Faceoff Specialist of the Year. Gaffney and AT A GLANCE... Varello tied for first team All-League, but Varello was awarded the major award due to more first place votes. Counting Gaffney s 13-of-21 effort in the regular season, he finished the year 25-of-44 (57 percent) against Varello. Freshman James Spence also made critical saves. He finished with eight stops for the game, but stopped 3-of-4 sent his way in the fourth quarter with the only goal he allowed being a doorstep finish. Classmate Teddy Leggett had one of the biggest plays of the game, collecting a groundball on a scramble following the opening faceoff of the overtime period, setting the stage for Lucas Spence s heroics. Lehigh avenged a regular-season loss to Navy. The Mountain Hawks will look to avenge another loss on Sunday when they face Loyola, just 22 days after the Greyhounds defeated Lehigh Lehigh s 39 victories from was tied for third in the nation during that span. The win total only trailed Duke and Loyola and was tied with Denver. The Mountain Hawks are against Patriot League opponents since the beginning of 2012 (regular season and postseason). Lehigh has reached double-figure victories in three of the last six seasons (2012, 2013, 2014) after having double-figure wins just four times in the first 112 years of program history: 1969, 1993, 1994 and 1997.

Following a strong regular season which includes a top-four seed for the first time since 2014, six members of the Lehigh men s lacrosse team were named All-Patriot League honorees on Monday. Juniors Craig Chick and Andrew Pettit, and sophomore Conor Gaffney garnered first team All-League while juniors Eddie Bouhall and Lucas Spence, and freshman Teddy Leggett were named second team honorees. Lehigh s six All-Patriot League performers mark its most since 2013, when the Mountain Hawks had seven. Chick was named first team All-League for a second straight season after posting 37 groundballs and 35 caused turnovers (second nationally) through 14 regular-season games. Chick was named Patriot League Defensive Player of the Week on Mar. 12 following Lehigh s 9-7 win at No. 12 Army West Point, a game which saw him post seven groundballs and three caused turnovers, holding the Black Knights to a then-season low seven goals. An anchor of Lehigh s defense, which has been ranked as high as sixth nationally, Chick has broken the Lehigh and Patriot League career records for caused turnovers - breaking the school record on Mar. 20 at No. 18/19 Hofstra and breaking the league mark two games later at Boston University. Chick is up to 112 career caused turnovers, tied for ninth in NCAA history. He has at least one caused turnover in every game this season, including multiple in 10-of-14 contests. Named to the Tewaaraton Award Watch List in March, Pettit leads Lehigh in goals (34) and points (53), standing fourth in the league in both categories. The Wilmington, Delaware native has at least one point in every game this season, with multiple points in 13-of-14 contests. Earlier this season, Pettit tied a career-high seven points vs. Holy Cross (two goals, five assists) while adding seven points at Hofstra (three goals, four assists) as well. Hofstra stood as the nation s No. 1 defense and Pettit went on to have more points himself (7) than it was allowing opponent teams on average (6.33) entering the day. Pettit also scored five goals at Army, including the first three goals of the fourth quarter, to turn a 6-5 Lehigh deficit into an 8-6 lead. That effort earned Pettit Patriot League Offensive Player of the Week honors. Pettit is up to 76 goals and 107 points in his career. Gaffney garnered All-League recognition for the first time in his career, sharing first team faceoff specialist honors with Navy s Joe Varello (Varello was named Faceoff Specialist of the Year due to receiving more first-place votes). Gaffney leads the Patriot League in faceoff percentage, winning 60.3 percent of his draws (178-of-295). He has impressed against some of the league s top faceoff specialists, including winning 13- of-21 against Varello (who has won 59.6 percent on the year), 11-of-20 vs. Colgate s Colin Orr (who has won 60.1 percent) and 12-of-20 against Army s John Ragno (who has won 55.5 percent). Gaffney also won 17-of-20 at Lafayette, 16-of-23 against Cornell and most recently, at Bucknell. Gaffney has been named Patriot League Faceoff Specialist of the Week four times this season, including a stretch of three straight weeks in March. He has won 10 weekly awards over the first two years of his career. Spence earned his first-career All-League recognition after quietly putting together a very impressive season. The Springfield, Pa. native has multiple points in every game of 2018, standing second on the team in goals (29) and points (49) while his 20 assists are tied for the team lead. Spence is tied for fifth in the Patriot League in points, stands eighth in goals and tied for seventh in assists. He enjoyed a breakout performance in the league opener vs. Holy Cross, tallying career highs in goals (6) and points (7) while adding six points (four goals, two assists) at Lafayette. Included in that effort was a personal 3-0 run in the span of 35 seconds. Spence recorded five points (two goals, three assists) at Hofstra while posting four points in each of the last two games entering the postseason, vs. No. 9/11 Cornell and at No. 11/12 Bucknell. Bouhall was named second team All-Patriot League for a second straight season as a key part of Lehigh s defense. Bouhall is tied for fourth in the league with 20 caused turnovers while adding 37 groundballs. Among his strong performances was six groundballs and four caused turnovers against Navy to tie a career high in both categories. Bouhall recorded three groundballs and three caused turnovers at No. 13/14 North Carolina while following with five groundballs and two caused turnovers vs. Holy Cross. Bouhall has at least one groundball in 13-of-14 games this season and a caused turnover in all but two contests, helping the Mountain Hawks hold their opponent to single-digit goals in eight of the first 11 games in Leggett has enjoyed a tremendous rookie campaign, earning second team All- League at long-stick midfielder after a regular season which saw him record 55 groundballs (second on the team) and 20 caused turnovers (tied for second). Chick is second in the Patriot League in caused turnovers (35) while Bouhall and Leggett are each tied for fourth with 20 apiece. In addition, Leggett, Chick and Casey Eidenshink are the only three non-faceoff specialists to eclipse 50 groundballs in a season in Kevin Cassese s 11 seasons as Lehigh head coach. The Vaughan, Ontario native has multiple groundballs in 13-of-14 games this season, including seven at Army, to go with a caused turnover. Leggett tallied a career-high four caused turnovers vs. Holy Cross while causing two turnovers on six different occasions. After being named first team All-Patriot League earlier in the week, Lehigh men s lacrosse sophomore Conor Gaffney garnered a major award on Wednesday, being named Patriot League Scholar-Athlete of the Year. Gaffney is Lehigh s first Scholar-Athlete of the Year since Jonathan Stumpf in 2011 and fourth in program history. He s just the second Scholar-Athlete of the Year from Lehigh to also be named first team All-League in the same season (the other being Michael Rabinovitz in 2002). Through three semesters at Lehigh, Gaffney owns a perfect 4.0 GPA as a Mechanical Engineering major, being named to the Dean s List every semester, garnering the Faculty Athletics Council Award as well and being named to the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll. Gaffney currently stands fifth among active players in career faceoff percentage (60.5). The league s leader in faceoff percentage this season (60.1 percent, 188-of-233), Gaffney has impressed against some of the league s top faceoff specialists, including winning 13-of-21 against Navy s Joe Varello (who has won 59.6 percent on the year), 11-of-20 then 10-of-18 vs. Colgate s Colin Orr (who has won 59.6 percent) and 12-of- 20 against Army s John Ragno (who has won 55.5 percent). Gaffney won 17-of-20 at Lafayette, 16-of-23 against Cornell and most recently, at Bucknell. He played a crucial role in Lehigh s 13-8 win at No. 18/19 Hofstra on Mar. 20, winning 15-of-24 against Kyle Gallagher, who entered the day at 61.8 percent on the season. 3 LAST TIME OUT BALTIMORE Junior Lucas Spence finished with a game-high four goals and five points, none bigger than scoring the game-winner 42 seconds into overtime to send the fourth-seeded Lehigh men s lacrosse team past No. 11/13 and second-seeded Navy, 10-9, in the Patriot League Semifinals on Friday night. Spence s brother James came up big in the fourth quarter between the pipes while sophomore Conor Gaffney won the final five faceoffs of the game to help the Mountain Hawks come back from an 8-7 deficit to score three of the final four goals. Prior to 2012, the program had never advanced to the NCAA Tournament. The Mountain Hawks would win away from home for the sixth time in their last seven tries. Lehigh would defeat Loyola for the first time in program history. ALL-TIME IN THE PL TOURNAMENT This marks the Mountain Hawks 10th appearance in the Patriot League Tournament and eighth in a row. It marks the first time Lehigh has qualified in eight consecutive seasons. The Mountain Hawks are the only team to advance to each of the last eight Patriot League Tournaments. Lehigh qualified two straight years in 2005 and 06, falling to Navy in both occasions. Lehigh is 8-7 all-time in the Patriot League Tournament, including 8-4 over the last eight years. Patriot League Offensive Player of the Year Pat Spencer leads the offense in assists (51) and points (81). He is already the league s all-time leader in career points, and he s only a junior. Jay Drapeau owns a team-leading 35 goals, to go with nine assists, while Aidan Olmstead has 35 points (19 goals, 16 assists) and Kevin Lindley owns 34 (30 goals, four assists). Foster Huggins, the league Defensive Player of the Year owns 47 caused turnovers to lead the nation while goaltender Jacob Stover has a 8.37 goals against average and save percentage. Bailey Savio has taken most of the faceoffs, winning 45.9 percent of his draws (90-of-196). Mike Orefice has won 39.7 percent (62-of-156). LOYOLA (NOTES) - No. 11/12 Loyola scored the game s first seven goals to put the Mountain Hawks into a hole they couldn t dig out of. The Greyhounds won 5-of-6 first-quarter faceoffs, 8-of-11 in the first half and 15-of-21 over the first three quarters. Two straight third-quarter goals from junior Andrew Pettit pulled Lehigh within 10-3, but four consecutive Loyola goals erased any hopes of a comeback. - The Mountain Hawks did finish with seven of the game s final nine goals and six of the final seven. The only Loyola goal in that span came directly off a faceoff. - In Lehigh s 4-0 run to end the game, sophomore Austin Pierce scored two goals in the span of 16 seconds while senior Brady Thompson scored his first-career goal in the final minute to account for the final. - Pettit led Lehigh s offense with three goals for his 13th-career hat trick. Juniors Tristan Rai, Lucas Spence and Mickey Fitzpatrick each recorded a goal and assist. Sophomore Parker Kent tied a career-high two groundballs while Foley tied career highs in groundballs (2) and caused turnovers (1). - Junior Craig Chick caused a turnover, marking the 109th of his career to tie for 11th in NCAA history. - One bright spot was Lehigh s man-up unit as for a second straight game, the Mountain Hawks were 1-for-1 on the extra man to give it 12 conversions in their last 15 attempts. SUSTAINED SUCCESS The Lehigh men s lacrosse team was tied for third in the nation in wins from , winning 39 games over those three seasons. 4 2018 LEHIGH MEN S LACROSSE GAME 17: LEHIGH AT NO. 6/8 LOYOLA APRIL 29, 2018 PAGE 4 ALL-TIME SERIES WITH LOYOLA Loyola leads the all-time series, 13-0, which includes a 6-0 mark since the Greyhounds joined the Patriot League. The teams met in league play in 2014, playing for the first time since Five of the six games since 2014 have come in the regular season with Loyola also beating the Mountain Hawks in the 2014 championship game. The closest call came in 2016 when Lehigh dropped a slim final to the Greyhounds. The first-ever meeting between the two sides was in 1942, a 12-1 Loyola win. PL QUARTERFINAL WIN OVER COLGATE (APR. 24) - Sophomore Andrew Eichelberger gave Lehigh an early 1-0 lead, then two goals in the final 29 seconds of the stanza gave the Mountain Hawks a 3-0 advantage. Lehigh went on to score eight of the next 10 goals then Colgate scored three goals in the final five minutes, but it wasn t nearly enough. - The win snapped a four-game home losing streak for the Mountain Hawks and four-game losing skid in the Patriot League Tournament, dating back to their previous in Prior to Tuesday, Lehigh s previous home win was also against Colgate on Mar. 3 by a 10-7 final. After that game, the Mountain Hawks dropped four straight home contests, all against teams currently ranked in the top 13 of this week s USILA Coaches Poll. - Junior Andrew Pettit helped lead the offense with a career-high tying five goals. It also tied a Patriot League Tournament single-game record, previously held by five different individuals. All five goals were assisted as Lehigh assisted on eight of its 11 goals on the evening. - Junior Tristan Rai added a goal and three assists while senior John Mehok had a goal and career-high tying two assists. Junior Lucas Spence recorded a goal and assist to continue his streak of multiple points in every game this season. - Sophomore Christian McHugh set a career high with three caused turnovers while tying a career-high two groundballs. Junior Craig Chick finished with five groundballs and a caused turnover while classmate Eddie Bouhall recorded two groundballs and two caused turnovers. Sophomore Erik DiGirolamo was strong with a career-high three groundballs and a caused turnover. - Lehigh has given up 13 goals over two full games against Colgate this season. In the Raiders other 12 games of 2018, they re averaging goals per contest. - Sophomore Conor Gaffney won 10-of-18 faceoffs against Colin Orr, who entered the day over 60 percent on the season. - Freshman James Spence was stellar in goal, stopping 11-of-15 shots sent his way. He made eight first-half saves, allowing just one goal to help the Mountain Hawks take a commanding 6-1 lead into the locker room. PROLIFIC PETTIT Junior Andrew Pettit was one of the Patriot League s, and nation s, top goal scorers last season. He finished the year with 35 goals in 14 games. His goal total was second in the league while his 2.5 goals per contest was No. 1 in the Patriot League and No. 17 nationally. Pettit began last season with multiple goals in his first nine games of the season before he was held goal-less at Loyola on Apr. 8. Pettit was the only player in the nation to score multiple goals in every game up until that point as his streak reached 10 dating back to This season, Pettit has 61 points (42 goals, 19 assists) through 15 games. Pettit is currently 16th in the nation in goals per game (2.63) (as of Saturday, Apr. 28). He s also second nationally in extra-man goals (9). He has led the Mountain Hawks in goals (or tied for the lead) eight times in 16 games, and has eight hat tricks in One highlight was a career-high tying five-goal effort at Army West Point, which included a natural hat trick (three straight goals) in the fourth quarter to turn a one-goal deficit into a two-goal lead. He also had seven points (three goals, four assists) in a 13-8 win at No. 18/19 Hofstra (Mar. 20), contributing to more goals himself (7) than Hofstra (the nation s No. 1 scoring defense) were allowing entering the day (6.33). Pettit tied a career high and Patriot League Tournament single-game record with five goals in the Patriot League Quarterfinal victory over Colgate. Pettit was added to the Tewaaraton Award Watch List on Mar. 22. Pettit has recorded multiple goals in 26 of his last 31 games dating back to the end of his freshman season. He owns 27-career multi-goal games, 30-career multi-point games and 15-career hat tricks. Pettit has scored a goal in 16 straight games. His 15 straight games as of Wednesday was tied for the ninth longest active streak in the nation. Also on Monday, the Mountain Hawks were ranked No. 16 in the Maverick Media Poll and 17 in the USILA Coaches Poll as Lehigh jumped into the national rankings for the first time in more than three years. Lehigh was also ranked No. 14 in this week s Nike/U.S. Lacrosse Division I Men s Top 20. The last time the Mountain Hawks were nationally-ranked, they stood No. 20 in the Feb. 23, 2015 Maverick Media Poll. The Mountain Hawks are coming off their seventh straight Patriot League Tournament berth last season; Lehigh and Army West Point are the only two teams to advance to each of the last seven league tourneys. TEAM CAPTAINS ANNOUNCED Lehigh head men s lacrosse coach Kevin Cassese announced in the fall that senior Ian Strain will serve as the Mountain Hawks 2018 captain while junior Craig Chick and seniors John Mehok and Nolan Apers were named assistant captains. Strain has plenty of experience in a leadership role after serving as co-captain with Cody Triolo and Donny Stires last season. The captains were voted on by the team. Junior Andrew Pettit was added as an assistant captain during the season, as announced on Mar. 20. IMPRESSIVE JUNIORS Lehigh s current junior class has been stellar. Last year, they combined for 80 goals (58.4% of team total), 42 assists (46.7%), 145 groundballs (32.6%) and 76 caused turnovers (65.5%) last season (2017). As a team, Lehigh finished with 137 goals, 90 assists, 445 groundballs and 116 caused turnovers. Seven started much of last season (Eddie Bouhall, Craig Chick and Matt Rimol on defense, Lucas Spence in the midfield and Andrew Pettit and Tristan Rai at attack, and Chris Kiernan in goal). Mickey Fitzpatrick also started three games in the midfield. So far this year, the class has combined for 121 goals (out of 172, 70.3% of team total) and 72 assists (out of 106, 67.9%). Defensively, the junior class has tallied 190 groundballs (out of 492, 38.6%) and 78 caused turnovers (out of 126, 61.9%). NOONE WINS MLL CHAMPIONSHIP WITH MACHINE One year after falling to former Lehigh teammate Noah Molnar and his Denver Outlaws in the MLL Finals, Mike Noone got revenge as his Ohio Machine captured the 2017 title with a win over Molnar s Outlaws. Noone played in 10 games during the regular season, posting 10 groundballs and a caused turnover. Molnar finished the 2017 regular season with four goals, two assists, 19 groundballs and seven caused turnovers. Noone had a groundball and caused turnover in the championship game held Saturday, Aug. 19 at Ford Center at the Star in Frisco, Texas, while Molnar collected a groundball. EXTRA-MAN PROFICIENCY The Mountain Hawks have converted an impressive 62.5 percent of their manup opportunities this season (25-of-40). That percentage is good for second in the nation, behind Maryland s 63.6 percentage. Maryland and Lehigh would be 2-3 in NCAA history if the season ended today. Detroit Marist Johns Hopkins Denver North Carolina CHAOTIC CHICK Junior Craig Chick has emerged as a premier defensive player in the country as he is first in caused turnovers since the beginning of 2016 (116) (as of Saturday, Apr. 28). He is already eighth in NCAA history in career caused turnovers. Chick finished his freshman season as the national leader in caused turnovers with 37. His big breakout came on Apr. 12 at Princeton when he posted 10 groundballs and eight caused turnovers. The eight caused turnovers were the most by a Lehigh player since Evan Guerrero had nine against Saint Joseph s on Feb. 14, Chick tied for the most caused turnovers in the nation in 2016 (Division I) and tied Princeton s Sherrerd Field record, originally set by Villanova s Brian Karalunas. Chick followed with seven groundballs and seven caused turnovers just four days later against Cornell. Chick finished the season with 41 groundballs and 25 caused turnovers over his last eight games. As a sophomore, Chick posted 58 groundballs and school-record 40 caused turnovers (third in the nation). On five different occasions, Chick tallied four or more caused turnovers and had a stretch of 10 straight games with multiple caused turnovers. So far in 2018, Chick has 39 caused turnovers, currently second in the nation. He led the nation in shooting percentage (.534), turning 58 shots into 31 goals. - As a sophomore, Rai tied for the team lead with 46 points (24 goals, team-leading 22 assists). - So far as a junior, Rai owns 45 points via 22 goals and 23 assists. - For his career, Rai has double-figure goals in 20 games, multiple points in 31 and 15 hat tricks. DEFENSE IS KEY Lehigh owned the nation s second-ranked defense in 2012 (6.61 goals per game) and followed by finishing sixth in 2013 (7.94) and second in 2014 (7.22). In 2015, the Mountain Hawks allowed goals per game while they allowed per contest in Last season (2017), Lehigh allowed goals per game. So far this year, the Mountain Hawks are allowing 9.13 goals per game, 20th in the nation (as of Saturday, Apr. 28). After allowing two goals in the first 2:15 of the Patriot League Semifinals vs. Navy (Apr. 27), the Lehigh defense bore down the rest of the way. The Mountain Hawks held the Midshipmen scoreless for a stretch of 23:04 bridging the end of the first quarter through beginning of the third. Navy did have a surge of four goals in the span of 7:57 in the third, but the Mountain Hawks allowed just one goal over the game s final 19:22 to pull out the 10-9 overtime win. In the end, Lehigh allowed just seven goals over the final 58:27. The Mountain Hawks allowed just three goals over the game s first 55:23 in the Patriot League Quarterfinals vs. Colgate (Apr. 24), allowing only six goals for the game. The six goals marked a season-low for the Raiders offense, lower than their previous low of seven against both Lehigh (in the regular season) and Loyola. Colgate scored single-digit goals in just three of 13 regular-season games. Lehigh enjoyed a strong start at No. 11/12 Bucknell (Apr. 20), holding the Bison to three goals over the game s first 22:48. The Mountain Hawks held No. 9/11 Cornell (Apr. 14) to 12 goals, its fewest goals in six games - since scoring 11 on Mar. 17 vs. Yale. Cornell had been averaging 18.6 goals over its previous five games entering the day. Lehigh held the Big Red to just six goals over the game s final 42:44. Lehigh held Cornell to by far its lowest shot total of the season (23). The Big Red s previous lowest was 30 Lehigh s defense allowed just six goals at Boston University (Mar. 31), exactly five goals below the Terriers season average. Lehigh held No. 16/18 Rutgers to eight goals (Mar. 14), just the second time the Scarlet Knights were held to single digits and just one more goal than their previous season low of seven at Army. The Mountain Hawks allowed just 25 shots and 15 shots on goal, well below Rutgers averages of 34.8 and 22.3 entering the game. The Mountain Hawks held No. 12 Army West Point (Mar. 10) to a season-low seven goals, two fewer goals than its previous season low of nine vs. Rutgers. Lehigh held Army almost six goals fewer than its average entering the game (12.80). Lehigh held Colgate (Mar. 3) to just 19 shots for the game, only 13 on goal fewer shots on goal than the Raiders were averaging goals through four games. 10 2018 LEHIGH MEN S LACROSSE GAME 17: LEHIGH AT NO. 6/8 LOYOLA APRIL 29, 2018 PAGE 10 KEVIN CASSESE Smith Family Head Coach 11th Season as Lehigh Head Coach Kevin Cassese enters his 11th season as Lehigh s head men s lacrosse coach in Cassese s impact has been immediate, leading the Mountain Hawks to back-to-back Patriot League Championships in 2012 and 2013 followed by a third straight appearance in the league title game in Cassese has led to Lehigh to seven straight Patriot League Tournaments. The Mountain Hawks finished last season with a 7-7 record and 4-4 mark in league play. Lehigh s season was highlighted by two consecutive home wins over nationally-ranked foes, defeating No. 16/18 Boston University (10-6) and No. 13/14 Princeton (15-10) while earning a 9-6 home victory over rival Bucknell on Senior Night to earn the program s seventh straight Patriot League Tournament berth. Three Mountain Hawks earned All-League, including Craig Chick, who was named to the first team and garnered honorable mention All-America recognition by Inside Lacrosse. Chick broke a school record with 40 caused turnovers, one year after leading the nation in that category. The program s breakthrough came in 2012 when Lehigh finished 14-3 and won its first-ever Patriot League Tournament Championship to advance to the program s first NCAA Tournament. The Mountain Hawks followed that with a 12-5 campaign in 2013, winning both the regular season and tournament titles. Despite losing a large and talented senior class, Lehigh still went 13-5 in 2014 and advanced to the Patriot League Championship Game once again. In 2012, Cassese led the Mountain Hawks to a school-record 14 wins, a program record nine-game winning streak and their highest-ever national ranking; Lehigh came in at No. 4 nationally in the final Coaches Poll following the regular season. Following a home-opening loss to Villanova in 2012, Lehigh promptly won nine straight games and 13-of-14 to advance to the NCAA Tournament as the No. 7 overall seed. The Mountain Hawks hosted eventual National Finalist Maryland and gave the Terps their toughest fight on their road to the title game. Despite falling down 6-1 in the first half, Lehigh responded with seven straight goals in front of a standing room only crowd of 2,278 at the Ulrich Sports Complex (and in front of a national audience on ESPNU). Lehigh posted an impressive 8-3 record against nationally-ranked foes, including a big 9-8 win at No. 4 North Carolina in March, propelling the Mountain Hawks into the national polls for the first time since Lehigh ended a number of long droughts, defeating UNC for the first time since 1951, Yale for the first time since 1918 and Penn State for the first time since A big part of the success came from the Mountain Hawks defense, which stood as the No. 2 scoring defense (only behind Notre Dame), holding opponents to only 6.81 goals per game. Lehigh picked up its first shutout in 40 years with a 13-0 triumph over Manhattan, allowed only two goals to VMI and five or fewer to Penn State, Navy, Holy Cross, Penn and Saint Joseph s. Cassese was named Patriot League Coach of the Year while freshman Matt Poillon became Lehigh s first-ever Goalkeeper of the Year. Eight cracked the All-Patriot League Team, tied for most in school history. In 2013, Lehigh won seven straight games to finish undefeated in Patriot League play and earn the right to host the league tournament. Lehigh went on to dominate Bucknell on its home turf (11-5) for its second straight league championship. The awards continued to roll in for the Mountain Hawks as Poillon was named Patriot League Goalie of the Year for a second straight season and a school-record four players were named USILA All-Americans, breaking the record of three set a season prior. In addition, the Mountain Hawks placed a league-best three players on the Academic All-Patriot League Team. The success continued into 2014 as the Mountain Hawks won 13 games, just one shy of tying the school record set just two years prior. Lehigh earned a thrilling 7-6 triple overtime victory over No. 20 Villanova in February and earned convincing league wins over Bucknell (9-3), Navy (13-2), Holy Cross (20-4) and Lafayette (17-6). The Mountain Hawks defeated Navy in the Patriot League Quarterfinals at home before earning a semifinal victory over Army behind a Reid Weber goal with just three seconds remaining. Several Mountain Hawks enjoyed breakout seasons, led by attackman Dan Taylor who recorded 45 points over his last seven games to finish with 76 points, which far and away led the Patriot League and was most among Canadian players in all of Division I Lacrosse. Taylor was named a first team All-Patriot League honoree, as was defenseman Tripp Telesco who finished with 44 groundballs and 36 caused turnovers. Three others were named All-League while Poillon, Taylor and Telesco were named honorable mention All-Americans as well. After struggling to begin 2015, the Mountain Hawks ended the season on a high note, winning five of their last six regular season games, defeating a pair of nationally-ranked opponents in a five-day span (No. 14 Princeton and No. 18 Stony Brook) and advancing to their fifth straight Patriot League Tournament. Taylor enjoyed another sensational season, posting 77 points to earn Patriot League Offensive Player of the Year honors and honorable mention All-America recognition. A young team in 2016 went on to advance to the program s sixth straight Patriot League Tournament, finishing 4-4 in league play highlighted by a thrilling 8-7 win at No. 20 Boston University. Setting the stage for the program s breakthrough of 2012, the Mountain Hawks jumped squarely into the national lacrosse picture in 2011 by not only qualifying for the Patriot League postseason, but also proving they could compete with anyone in the country. Lehigh advanced to its first Patriot League Tournament since The Mountain Hawks got off to a quick 3-1 start, which included a triumph over Navy, the program s first victory over the Midshipmen in nearly 100 years. Lehigh posted the nation s eighth biggest improvement in 2011, according to LaxPower.com s computer rankings, which takes into account many of the factors used by the NCAA Tournament selection committee. In his first four years at Lehigh, Cassese mentored a total of nine All-Patriot League honorees, including four in Faceoff specialist Ryan Snyder cracked the first team after winning 61.6 percent of his draws and scooping a then-patriot League record 118 groundballs. Jonathan Stumpf was not only named to the second team, but also became Lehigh s first-ever CoSIDA Academic All-American while being named a Senior CLASS Award first team All-American, USILA Scholar All-American and Patriot League Scholar-Athlete of the Year. Stumpf (along with teammate and current Lehigh assistant coach Will Scudder) also played in the USILA North-South All-Star Game where he netted the eventual game-winning goal for the South. Under Cassese s watch, Lehigh has sent several players to professional lacrosse. Seven have been selected in the Major League

Roman Lao-Gosney (Florida) has played in more than 50 career games since joining the league in 2012 while twin brother Cameron (Florida), Mike Noone (Ohio) and Noah Molnar (Denver) are all veterans of the league with Molnar winning an MLL Championship in 2016 and Noone in In addition, Taylor was the first selection of defending National Lacrosse League Champion Saskatchewan Rush in the 2015 NLL Collegiate Draft. He was picked 12th overall and went on to win a championship with the Rush in Cassese s players have been involved in US Lacrosse as well as defenseman Ty Souders tried out for the U.S. Under-19 Team as part of a three-day training camp at UMBC. Cameron and Roman Lao-Gosney also participated in numerous scrimmages for Team USA, beginning with the Capital Lacrosse Classic on Oct. 7, On a personal level, Cassese made his coaching debut for US Lacrosse at the 2014 World Lacrosse Championships in Denver, serving as an assistant coach under Team USA head coach Richie Meade (Furman), alongside assistants Dave Pietramala (Johns Hopkins) and Jeff Tambroni (Penn State). Cassese s responsibilities included faceoff coordinator and goalie coordinator while handling rides, clears and the sub game. As a player, Cassese had an impressive career representing the USA. He was named to the 2010 United States Men s National Lacrosse Team, traveling to Manchester, England. He was named co-captain of that gold medal winning team, alongside Ryan Powell (Syracuse). That marked the third time Cassese earned a spot on the National Team. Cassese also helped the United States to the gold medal at the 2002 International Lacrosse Federation World Championships, while still an undergraduate at Duke University. He was also a member of the United States team that placed second at the 2006 ILF World Championships in London, Ontario. Cassese is one of the most decorated student-athletes in Duke history. He was a two-time captain and three-time All-ACC selection. Cassese helped lead the Blue Devils to three NCAA Tournament appearances and a pair of ACC Championships during his collegiate career. Cassese earned All-America honors on three separate occasions, including first-team accolades in 2002 and Cassese, who scored 80 goals and handed out 38 assists in his career, was a two-time Tewaaraton Trophy finalist and garnered ACC Player of the Year honors in In 2002, Cassese was the recipient of the Lt. Donald MacLaughlin, Jr. Award as the nation s top midfielder. He was also a standout in the classroom, graduating with a 3.59 GPA while earning his Bachelor s Degree in Sociology from Duke. He was selected as a USILA Scholar All-American, ACC Academic Honor Roll member, and was named the ACC s Weaver-James-Corrigan Honorary Award recipient for outstanding athletic and academic achievement. After his time at Duke, Cassese continued his playing career in Major League Lacrosse for seven years. He was the second overall selection in the 2003 MLL Draft by the Rochester Rattlers. Among his professional accomplishments are a pair of MLL Rookie of the Week honors and a spot in both the 2006 and 2010 MLL All-Star Games. He was named MVP of the 2006 All-Star Game. Cassese was traded to the Philadelphia Barrage during the summer of 2007 (which coincided with his hiring at Lehigh) and helped lead his new team to the 2007 Major League Lacrosse Championship, as well as a spot in Championship Weekend in Cassese s coaching career before Lehigh included a stint as an assistant coach at his alma mater from , helping lead the Blue Devils to the 2007 National Championship Game.
