Referee), Chris Federico (Asst. Referee) TONIGHT'S GAME... Tonight's contest will be the Friars' 15th game of the season and their ninth HOCKEY EAST match. NEXT FOR THE FRIARS... The Friars battle Ferris State on December 29, in the first round of the Denver Cup in Denver, Colo. THE PROVIDENCE/UMASS-AMHERST SERIES... Friday's game will be the 26th meeting between the two schools. Providence leads the all-time series The two teams first met on Feb. 27, 1954 with Providence defeating UMass, 15-5, at the Rhode Island Auditorium. The Friars' last win against the Minutemen was a 3-2 victory on February 26, 1999 at Schneider Arena. PC's last loss to UMass-Amherst was a 4-3 defeat on January 26, 2000 at Schneider Arena. LAST SEASON VS. UMASS-AMHERST... Last season, the Minutemen swept all three games versus PC. On January 7, UMass defeated the Friars, 2-1, at the Mullins Center. PC's lone goal was scored by Shawn Weiman. Nolan Schaefer recorded 33 stops in the loss. The following night, UMass defeated PC, 3-1, at Schneider Arena. Senior Nick Lent scored PC's only goal. Goaltender Boyd Ballard registered 18 saves for the Friars. On January 26, UMass defeated PC, 4-3, at the Mullins Center. Jon DiSalvatore, Drew Omicioli and Peter Fregoe each scored one goal for the Friars. Boyd Ballard and Jamie Vanek combined to record 31 saves in the loss. AT SCHNEIDER ARENA... The Friars have recorded a 10-3 mark against UMass-Amherst at Schneider Arena. PC's last win against the Minutemen at Schneider Arena was a 3-2 victory on February 26, The Friars' last loss to UMass at Schneider Arena was a 3-1 defeat on January 8, FRIAR MILESTONE...PC's 8-0 win over Union on October 29, 2000 was the 700th victory in the history of Friar Hockey. PC's all-time record now stands at The Friars' first win ever was 6-4 victory over Springfield on January 6, The victory over Springfield was also the first game in the history of PC hockey. HOLDING THE LEAD...PC is unbeaten this season when holding a lead at the second intermission, (7-0-0). The Friars are also an impressive when they have scored the game's first goal.

2 PC IN SCHNEIDER ARENA... This season, The Friars have posted a record at Schneider Arena. Now in the 28th season of competition in Schneider Arena, PC's all-time record at the facility is (.612). Last season, the Friars posted an mark Schneider Arena. FRIARS SPLIT WEEKEND SERIES VERSUS MERRIMACK...The Friars' record stands at after a 4-1 loss to Merrimack on December 1 at Schneider Arena and a 7-3 win at Merrimack on December 2 at the Volpe Complex. On December 1, the Friars lost their first home contest of the season at Schneider Arena. Senior Jay Leach netted the Friars' lone goal, his third of the season, assisted by junior Marc Suderman and senior Matt Libby. Sophomore Nolan Schaefer recorded 20 saves for PC. On December 2, the Friars recorded their eighth win of the season, 7-3, at Merrimack's Volpe Complex. Five Friars registered multiple-points in the victory. Libby led the Friars with two goals and two assists. Senior Adam Lee recorded two goals and one assists, while Devin Rask added four assists to help pace the Friars. Freshmen Regan Kelly and Jonathan Goodwin each notched their first collegiate goals. Sophomore Jon DiSalvatore tallied one goal and two assists in the Friars' victory. Boyd Ballard stopped 29 shots in the win. BALLARD POSTS THIRD WIN OF THE SEASON...On December 2, Boyd Ballard recorded 29 saves in the Friars' 7-3 victory at Merrimack. This season, Ballard has appeared in six games, posting a record with a 2.76 goals against average and a.913 save percentage. On October 20, Ballard stopped 30 shots in PC's 5-0 win over Miami. PC's 5-0 win versus Miami was Ballard's fourth career shutout, ranking him second all-time in shutouts at Providence College. On November 20, Ballard paced the Friars to a 4-2 win over then 10th-ranked Northeastern. FRESHMAN FIRSTS...Freshmen Regan Kelly and freshman Jonathan Goodwin each tallied their first collegiate goals in the Friars' 7-3 win at Merrimack on December 2. Kelly notched his first tally on a one-timer from the slot at the 13:33 mark of the first period. Goodwin scored his first career goal off a rebound in front of the net at 6:27 of the first period. On November 25, freshman Mike Robinson and freshman Stephen Wood each tallied their first collegiate goals in the Friars' 3-3 tie versus Denver. Robinson notched his first tally on a slap shot from the right face-off circle at the 8:36 mark of the first period. Wood scored his first career goal on a wrap-around at 12:58 of the third period. LIBBY POSTS FIVE-POINT WEEKEND... Senior Matt Libby backboned the Friars' penalty-killing unit that was in man-down situations, including a perfect in PC's 7-3 win over Merrimack on December 2. Libby also led the Friars offensively, tallying two goals and two assists on December 2. On December 1, Libby assisted on the Friars' lone goal in a 4-1 loss to the Warriors. Libby is currently the Friars' second leading scorer with 16 points (five goals and 11 assists). RASK LEADS OFFENSE... Sophomore Devin Rask scored his team leading 18th point in PC's 7-3 win against Merrimack on December 2. The centerman notched four assists in the victory. Rask has registered four multiple-point games this season and eight in his career. This season, Rask has recorded 18 points (eight goals, 10 assists) in 13 games. On November 3, he registered his first career hat trick in PC's 5-3 win over Maine. On October 20, the sophomore center assisted on the game-winning goal in the squad's 5-0 win over Miami. On October 21, Rask recorded two goals and one assist versus Lake Superior. Rask scored both of his goals on the power play. On October 28 versus BU, Rask tallied his third goal of the season to tie the game at 3-3 with 1:33 remaining. Versus Union on October 29, Rask recorded three assists. DISALVATORE NAMED TO US JUNIOR NATIONAL TEAM... Sophomore right wing Jon DiSalvatore was named to the US Junior National Team on December 5. The U.S. National Junior Team will compete at the 2001 International Ice Hockey Federation World Junior Championship on December 26, January 5, 2001 in Moscow and other cities in Russia. The tournament features the world s top players under 20 years old. DiSalvatore is the first Friar to compete for the U.S. National Junior Team since defenseman Jay Leach played for the 1998 squad in Helsinki, Finland. This season, DiSalvatore has tallied five goals and 11 assists in PC's first 13 games. He has registered six multiple-point games and one multiple-goal contest. In his two seasons at Providence, he has recorded 14 multiple-point games. He added two assists in PC's 3-1 win over Northeastern on November 17. On December 2, he notched one goal and two assists in PC's 7-3 win over Merrimack. DiSalvatore was the Friars' fourth leading scorer last season, notching 15 goals and 12 assists in 38 games. DiSalvatore also led the team in plus/minus rating of nine during the season.

3 LEACH NETS CAREER HIGH... Senior Jay Leach notched his third goal of the season in PC's 4-1 loss to Merrimack on December 1. Entering this season, Leach had tallied just two goals in 102 games for the Friars. The Friars captain has recorded three goals and seven assists in 14 games for the Friars. FRIARS LOOKING FOR A WIN... Last season, UMass-Amherst was the only team in HOCKEY EAST to sweep the season series with the Friars. The Minuteman defeated the Friars, 2-1, at the Mullins Center on January 7. The following night, UMass posted a 3-1 win at Schneider Arena. On January 26, PC lost 4-3 at the Mullins Center. Three of UMass' five HOCKEY EAST wins last season were against the Friars. PC RANKED IN THE NATION...The Friars enter this weekend ranked ninth in the nation, according the USA TODAY/ American Hockey Magazine poll and the USCHO poll released on Monday, November 27. This marks the seventh consecutive week the Friars have been ranked among the top-15 in the country. CONSECUTIVE TIES...PC's consecutive ties versus Colorado College on November 24 and Denver on November 25 marked the first time the Friars have posted consecutive ties since the season. The season was Head Coach Paul Pooley's first season with the Friars. The squad posted consecutive ties on February 5, 1995 versus Merrimack and on February 10, 1999 at Northeastern. On February 5, PC skated to a 2-2 draw versus Merrimack at Schneider Arena and on February 10, the Friars and the Huskies battled to a 4-4 tie at Matthews Arena. SCHAEFER SHINES IN NET...Friar goaltender Nolan Schaefer has been stellar in net for the Friars this season. On November 24, Schaefer recorded 37 saves in PC's 1-1 tie versus Colorado College. On November 17, Schaefer earned his fifth win of the season with a 28-save performance in PC's 3-1 win over Northeastern. On November 10, the sophomore netminder faced 37 Wildcat shots, allowing just one goal. He also recorded his first career shutout, 8-0, versus Union on October 29. This season, Schaefer has posted a record with a 1.97 goals against average and a.943 save percentage. On November 30, Schaefer earned ITECH Goaltender of the Month honors. Schaefer posted a record in November, with all five of his starts coming against nationally-ranked opponents. Last night, Schaefer suffered only his second loss in nine starts, as he made 20 saves in a 4-1 loss to Merrimack. VERSUS UNRANKED OPPONENTS...The Friars have posted a record versus unranked opponents this season. The Friars defeated Miami on October 20, Union on October 29 and Merrimack on December 2. PC lost to Brown on November 4 and Merrimack on December 1. There only tie versus an unranked opponent was at Denver on November 25. PC's record against ranked teams is PICINIC CONTINUES TO SHINE... Junior J.J. Picinic registered the Friars' only goal in a 1-1 tie at Colorado College on November 24. On November 17, Picinic's tally was the game-winning goal in the Friars' 3-1 win over the Huskies. On November 18, Picinic notched two goals and two assists in the squad's 4-2 victory at Matthews Arena. It marked his first career multiple-point game. For the season, Picinic has tallied eight goals and two assists in 14 games. Picinic has tallied at least one goal in seven of the Friars' first 14 games. Entering the season, Picinic had registered just two goals and eight assists in 40 games. SUDERMAN SPARKS OFFENSE... On December 1, junior Marc Suderman assisted on PC's lone goal versus Merrimack. The following night, Suderman chipped in with one assist in the squad's 7-3 win at Merrimack. He recorded a pair of assists in PC's two ties on November 24 at Colorado College and November 25 at Denver. He tallied two goals and three assists in PC's two wins over Northeastern on November On November 17, Suderman assisted on the gamewinning goal in the squad's 3-1 victory over Northeastern. On November 18, he tallied two goals in the final 14 seconds of play to lift the Friars to a 4-2 win at Northeastern's Matthews Arena. Suderman also assisted on both of the Friars' first period goals. It was Suderman's first goal since he tallied the game-winner in PC's 2-1 opening night win over Notre Dame on October 15, 1999 at the Ice Breaker Tournament in Denver, Colo. Since his goal in last year's season opener, it took Suderman 30 games and 398 days to tally the fourth and fifth goals of his career. For the season, Suderman has notched two goals and 11 assists in 14 games and has scored at least one point in the Friars' last six games. INJURY BUG HITS FRIARS...This season the Friars have been hit by a rash of injuries. Entering Friday's game, Doug Wright, Shawn Weiman, Jason Platt and Regan Kelly have missed a combined 21 games due to injuries.

Last weekend, PC's penalty killing unit was in two games versus Merrimack, including a night in the squad's 7-3 win on December 2. The Friars' PK was a perfect 9-9 in a pair of ties versus Colorado College and Denver. The Merrimack game marked the seventh time this season that PC's special teams have been perfect on the penalty kill. Versus Northeastern on November 17, PC was 5-5, on October 20, the Friars were versus Miami, 8-8 versus Union on November 29, and on November 10 PC successfully killed off all six of UNH's power play opportunities. For the season, the Friars are 86 of 96 (.896) in man-down situations. The team ranks third overall in HOCKEY EAST in penalty-kill situations. HEAD COACH PAUL POOLEY... Is the 10th coach in the history of Providence College Hockey. Since 1994, Pooley has compiled an record and brought the Friars to two HOCKEY EAST Finals and one NCAA Tournament appearance. In , Pooley became the first head coach to bring a team to the HOCKEY EAST Championship Game in his inaugural season behind the bench. In he guide the Friars to their second HOCKEY EAST title and first since Pooley also led the team to its eighth appearance in the NCAA Tournament. He came to PC after spending three years as an assistant coach at Lake Superior State University ( ). Pooley began his coaching career at his alma-mater, Ohio State, where he served as an assistant to Jerry Welsh from DRAFTEES... Last June, PC had five players selected in the 2000 NHL Entry Draft. Providence had more players drafted than any other school in HOCKEY EAST and only the University of Minnesota (nine players) had more collegians selected in this year's draft. Sophomore right wing Jon DiSalvatore was selected in the fourth round (104th pick) by the San Jose Sharks and sophomore goaltender Nolan Schaefer was selected in the fifth round (166th overall) by the San Jose Sharks. Freshman Peter Zingoni, Jason Platt and Regan Kelly were all selected in the eighth round. Zingoni (231st pick) by the Columbus Blue Jackets, Platt (247th pick) by the Edmonton Oilers and Kelly (259th pick) by the Philadelphia Flyers. PC now has seven players on its roster drafted by NHL teams. PC SIGNS THREE RECRUITS...The PC men's hockey team has three recruits committed for the season. Derek Allan is a 6-foot-1-inch, 190- pound, forward from Davidson, Saskatchewan. Allan plays for the Nipawin Hawks of the SJHL. Chris Chaput is a 5-foot-10-inch, 180-pound, forward from Pawtucket, R.I. Chaput is a former Mount St. Charles standout and is currently playing for the New England Coyotes of the EJHL. Eric Lundberg is a 6-foot-2-inch, 195 pound, defenseman from Vernon, Conn.
