2 Series History Navy owns a 6-0 advantage in the series, including a 23-5 victory over the Crusaders, 23-5, in the inaugural meeting in Annapolis. While Saturday s contest between the Mids and Crusaders will be the seventh meeting in the series, it is only the third time in which the two teams will battle in Annapolis and first since The last time the two teams played in Annapolis, Navy jumped out to an 11-0 lead and cruised to a 17-3 victory... eight Navy players scored goals, including co-captain Jon Birsner who paced the Mids with seven points on one goal and six assists. Navy and Holy Cross have twice played one another in Worcester, Mass. (2005, 09) and twice in Dallas, Texas... in 2007, the two teams squared off at SMU s Ford Field and in 2008, they battled at the historic Texas Stadium, the prior home of the Dallas Cowboys. Navy has scored eight or more goals in all six games, while putting up double-figure goals in five of the six (8 in 2005)... the Mids defense, however, has held Holy Cross to five or fewer goals in every game. The Midshipmen, who have played five of their last six games on the road, pumped in five goals over just a 3:12 span in the final quarter of play. The first half featured just two goals, one by each team as neither could get any momentum going. Holy Cross scored three minutes into the contest after Kenny Minor sent a bouncer past Navy keeper RJ Wickham. Navy junior Tim Paul eventually scored the equalizer off a Geoff Leone pass with nine minutes to go in the second quarter. The play originated from the defensive end of the field, as Leone scrambled across the midline and fed Paul for a hard shot on the left corner of the box. Just over a minute into the second half, Navy took its first lead of the game when Paul wrapped around the left side of the goal and quickly sent the ball over Jimmy Harrison s shoulder. Holy Cross, however, answered when Luke Marchand found Chris Smirti who went to the top shelf for the game-tying goal at the 10:36 mark. The Crusaders took the lead back with seven minutes to go as Nick Rabiecki sent a worm burner past Wickham s ankles from six yards out. Navy, who turned in a 24-for-27 performance off its clearing game, used it to its advantage as sophomore Andy Warner received the ball behind the net and walked up to the crease uncovered and poked in a shot with 3:50 to go in the third, tying the game for the third time. Once again the Crusaders came storming back thanks to a five-yarder by Matt Moran to put Holy Cross up for a final time in the contest. Down 4-3 heading into the final quarter of play, Navy was in desperate need of a lift and it got just that from its midfield. Senior second-liner Shane Durkin used a roll dodge to break loose from his defender and bounced in a shot from five yards out. Fifty nine seconds later, Navy took the lead for good when middie Brian Striffler switched his stick from his left to right hand, racing straight up the middle to punch in his fifth goal in the last four contests. Navy took a 7-4 lead by the 5:48 mark when Basil Daratsos and Moran worked together on back-to-back goals, including the second of the two by Moran that was a hard sidewinder shot on the run. The Mids went on to score their next three goals in just 34 seconds, including a tough lefty shot from in tight by rookie Nikk Davis. Navy won the ensuing faceoff and senior Bruce Nechanicky found senior Michael Beggins who cranked an overhand shot. The Mids once again took the faceoff, as long pole Zack Schroeder picked up the ground ball and found the opposite wing, d-middie Marty Gallagher, sitting the crease for his first collegiate goal. Junior Frankie Coppola played a sensational game from the faceoff x where he won 13 of the 17 draws he took and paced Navy with six ground balls. 3 Take Note Dating back to last season, at least one Navy player has turned in a hat trick in 10 of the last 14 games (did not vs. Duke 09, North Carolina, Lehigh & Lafayette in 10), including Patrick Moran, who has produced hat tricks in three games this season. A year ago, Patrick Moran and Evan Sullivan were responsible for a combined 12 of the Mids 15 extra-man goals... Moran has scored five of the Mids nine manup goals this season, while Sullivan is responsible for one... Andy Warner has scored three this season, including two against Lafayette. Senior middies Joe Lennon and Patrick Moran are the only players to produce a point in all seven games this season... furthermore, Lennon owns the team s longest current point producing streak, turning in a point in 10 consecutive games... the last game he did not score a goal or deliver an assist was last year s Johns Hopkins contest. Sophomore attackman Ryan O Leary has emerged from his shell in the last two games, producing two goals and three assists for five points... he fed Joe Lennon twice at Lafayette and came up with two goals and an assist at Towson earlier this week. Sophomore keeper RJ Wickham s 19-save effort against Loyola (2-20), which earned the Feb. 22 Patriot League Goalkeeper of the Week award, was the best by a Navy keeper since former Navy team captain Seth DiNola turned away 21 shots on goal in a losing effort against Penn State (5-4) on April 12, Wickham stands No. 2 in the nation in save percentage, turning away 63.3 shots... he has made 100 saves, while giving up 8.31 goals per game. Wickham has recorded double digit saves in six of the seven games this season, coming up just one short at Lehigh. After leading the nation a year ago, Navy s man-down defense has given up 13 goals on 35 attempts (62.9)... last season the Mids surrendered six goals on 40 attempts. Since 2004, Navy owns an amazing 50-1 record when holding its opponents to six or fewer goals, including a 8-0 mark in the last two seasons combined. Navy owns a 40-2 record when scoring 10 or more goals since 2004, including a 7-0 mark in 2009 and 10. The Mids have won 17 in a row when leading at the half, including a 9-0 mark over the last two seasons... Navy has won 19 straight when leading after three quarters. Navy owns a 15-1 record in Patriot League regular-season games played at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium... its lone loss, a 10-9 decision against Colgate last March. Navy has allowed 25 goals over the last two games, the most given up in back-to-back contests since 2003 when Navy surrendered 28 goals to Johns Hopkins (17) and Army (11). The Midshipmen stand 3-4 for the first time since that team began the season winning three of its first four games but would post a 3-6 record before picking up a win over Towson near the end of the season. Home Field Advantage This is the 49th season Navy has played at least one game at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium. Navy owns a record (73.9) in games played at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium since the start of the 2004 campaign, outscoring its foes, Since playing its entire home schedule at home since the 2004 season, Navy has lost back-to-back games at home just three times... in 2006, the Mids lost to Georgetown, 9-5, and then suffered a 9-8 setback against Johns Hopkins... in 2008, Navy again lost regular-season decisions to the Hoyas and Blue Jays before the Mids season concluded with a 10-4 loss to Hopkins in the quarterfinals of the NCAA Tournament... Navy lost back-to-back home games earlier this season to Loyola, 8-7 OT, and North Carolina, The back-to-back-to-back losses in 2008 marks the only season in which Navy has lost three straight home games at the stadium. In its 103-year history, Navy has lost three straight home games just four times #1 Virginia, #2 Johns Hopkins, #9 N. Carolina 1985 Washington College, N. Carolina, Army 2003 #13 Rutgers, Air Force, #4 Georgetown, #4 Maryland 2006 #4 Georgetown, #7 Johns Hopkins, #4 Johns Hopkins... and four-straight home games just once 2003 #13 Rutgers, Air Force, #4 Georgetown, #4 Maryland Having played at least a game a year at the stadium for 42 consecutive years, Navy stepped away in 2003, allowing for state-of-the-art renovations to take place, including the astroplay surface and two video boards... Navy has played all of its home games at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium since the beginning of the 2004 campaign. Navy had won 20 consecutive home games against Patriot League foes before dropping a 10-9 decision to Colgate last spring. Opponents have scored double digits against the Mids just nine times in games played on their home field over the last seven seasons... Navy has held 18 of its 47 opponents to five or fewer goals since 2004 in games played at home (includes 2010 game vs. VMI played at Rip Miller Field). Navy owns a (68.5) record at home under the direction of head coach Richie Meade... the Mids have reached four wins at home every season Meade has been the head coach... Navy has recorded five or more wins at home in six of Meade s 16 seasons, including seven wins in 2004, 05, 06 and 07. Connors, meanwhile, scored a career-high four goals in the loss to Towson... it was the most goals scored by a Navy player since Joe Lennon turned in four goals to lead the Mids past Colgate in last yea rs Patriot League Tournament. Sophomore keeper RJ Wickham turned in double-digit saves for the sixth time in seven games this season, by turning aside 12 shots on goal. Navy s man down defense gave up just one goal on five shots, including surviving three straight minutes of being down in the fourth quarter. The nine turnovers by the Mids were a season low. Navy Erased From Rankings After appearing in the national rankings for 97 consecutive weeks, Navy was dropped from the USILA Coaches Poll on March 8 after losing back-to-back games to No. 15 Loyola and No. 4 North Carolina. Along the way, Navy captured a win over the top-ranked team... in 2004, the Mids earned a 9-6 victory over the No. 1 Maryland Terrapins in College Park. 6 Navy Tabbed to Win Patriot League By a cast of voters that included the league's coaches and sports information directors, the five-time Patriot League Champion Navy lacrosse team has been selected to once again finish first according to a preseason Patriot League poll. Navy secured 11 of the 14 first-place votes (eligible for only 12 due to not being able to vote for yourself) to find itself atop the standings, while Bucknell accounted the remaining three first-place votes. The Mids have amassed a 34-6 regular-season record in the Patriot League since joining the seven-member lacrosse conference in 2004 which includes two undefeated seasons (2004, 07). It s the sixth time in the seven years it has been a member of the Patriot League that Navy has been chosen as the preseason pick to win the conference... last year Colgate was selected as the league favorite. Navy senior long pole Jaren Woeppel was named the Patriot League Preseason Defensive Player of the Year, while Bucknell s Austin Winter earned a matching award on the offensive side of the field Patriot League Preseason Poll School Pts. He is only the fourth Navy freshman to get a starting nod in goal, joining Scott Bartkowski, Steve Nims and Mickey Jarboe. Wickham made six saves and gave up eight goals against Bucknell in the 09 league opener in what was his first contest minding the goal. Having played just six games, he finished the year ranked fourth on Navy s all-time freshman saves list with 42. Wickham opened the 2010 campaign with a solid effort, stopping 12 shots on goal against VMI. His 19-save performance against Loyola marked the best effort by a Navy keeper since former Navy team captain Seth DiNola turned away 21 shots on goal in a losing effort against Penn State (5-4) on April 12, he was rewarded by being named the Patriot League Goalkeeper of the Week on Feb. 23. He recorded his third-straight double-figure save game by turning away 14 shots against fourth-ranked North Carolina. He received his second Patriot League Goalkeeper of the Week honor on March 8 after making a combined 27 saves against Lehigh and Bucknell... he made a diving save as time expired in the game against Bison, forcing overtime and an eventual Navy win. Playing an equal number of games as last season (6), he has more than doubled his save production... recording 42 saves last spring, he has made 88 stops this season. He stands second nationally in save percentage, turning back 64.7 percent of the shots he s faced (prior to Towson game... now owns 63.3 pct)... he s 11th in goals-against average, giving up 8.31 goals per contest... as a team, the Midshipmen are ranked No. 2 in saves per game, stopping shots on goal. 7 Faceoff Trio Among Navy Leaders Seniors Robby Battle and Frankie Coppola are ranked among Navy s top 15 faceoff specialists. Battle, who emerged as the starter towards the end of the season a year ago, has won 71 draws over the last two seasons and stands 13th on Navy s career wins list. Last season he won 33 draws, while this year he has won 39 of the 82 faceoffs (47.6) he has taken... he needs seven more wins to join the Mids single-season leader board. Coppola garnered Second-Team All-Patriot League recognition a year ago after winning 50.8 percent of his draws ( ). He currently stands 10th on the Navy leader board with 128 wins over the last three seasons. Coppola has taken just 11 faceoffs this season. Sophomore Logan West has won 21 of the 41 draws he has taken this year and adding on his 1 for 5 effort last spring, he stands 16th on the Mids all-time wins list. Career Faceoff Wins Rk. While Navy s offense has been balance, it has been spread evenly among its starting attack and midfield units. Navy s attack has produced 41 points on 25 goals and 16 assists, while the midfield has recorded 35 points on 22 goals and 13 assists. Among the 61 games, 21 of them have gone into extra minutes with Navy winning nine (42.9). Over the last three seasons, 14 of the Mids 39 contests have been decided one goal and Navy has produced wins in seven of the 14. Navy is 1-2 in one-goal games this spring, earning an 8-7 overtime victory against Bucknell while dropping an 8-7 OT contest to Loyola and an 10-9 decision to Towson. Five Navy games a year ago were one-goal decisions (2-3) with the Mids earning wins in each of the last two. Both of Navy s Patriot League Tournament wins in 2009 were not only by one goal, but also the same score, the Mids needed triple overtime to capture their semifinal win over Colgate and rallied in the fourth quarter to defeat Bucknell in the title game. Wickham stands second nationally in save percentage, turning back 64.7 percent of the shots he s faced... he s 11th in goals-against average, giving up 8.04 goals per contest. Though the Mids were dropped for 15 goals in their last outing, they are still among the nation s top 10 scoring defensive units... Navy is No. 10, giving up 8.17 goals per contests. The Mids finished the 2009 campaign ranked among the top 10 in four categories and in the top 20 in six.
