1 # 1: Ring Handling # 3: Goalie Assessment Station # 2: Shuttle Skate # 4: Backward Skate Tryout # 1 Timed Drills Ice Plan Layout Create 4 groups of skaters based on pinnie colour and number (e.g. Group # 1 yellow-1 to yellow-8); Skaters rotate through the 4 stations; Ice coordinators stay at their stations (Recorder and helper); Skaters get two tries at each station; Takes about 8 minutes to record 8 skaters (4 groups x 8 each = 32 skaters); start with 5 min warm-up and scrimmage at the end (time permitting) Goalies remain at the Goalie Assessment Station the entire session, yet participate in scrimmage, time permitting. 2 Goalie Rating Scale for Mobility Drills Combines frequency of good behaviors measure and a relative rating with respect to goalies being assessed. 3 points: covers most to all points identified in the drill Has good balance and coordination and can transition well from one pattern or position to another Shows confidence and competence in how to move through the drill Combines good technique with speed, faster than others Best of the goalies being evaluated. 2 points: covers some of the points identified in the drill Has reasonable balance and coordination and is able to transition from one pattern or position to another, with some difficulty. About average / typical of goalies being assessed 1 points: Covers only a few of the points identified in the drill Has poor balance and coordination and is able to transition from one pattern or position to another, with considerable difficulty. 3 Goalie Drill # 1 Shuffle Step, Telescope and Recover to Basic Stance Goalie starts on goal line in basic stance. Facing up ice, shuffle step along goal line as shown, telescopes from goal line to second pylon, then does shuffle step to pylon # 3, telescopes back to goal line, then shuffle step to end. Return from the opposite direction. Pace should be steady, not rapid. Basic Stance: inverted V pads: knees are together, yet feet are wider than shoulders; knees slightly bent, back is straight; catching hand is out to the side, palm facing forward, head is up watching forward; stick grasped at the shank with the index finger pointing down the shank; stick placed 4 to 6 inches from the toes of the skates; stick lie flat on ice. Shuffle Step: done using basic stance; weight starts over the pushing foot; then the lead foot slides across in the direction of the travel while remaining pointing up the ice, weight transfer to the lead leg, trailing foot recovers so that the goalkeeper maintains stance; slide should be about 12 inches. Telescoping: keeping basic stance, point toes outward and push the heels apart slightly more than shoulder width, gliding forward, when stopping, toes are pointed inward, feet come together in proper basic stance no bobbing motion at the knees. 4 Goalie Drill # 2: T-Push, Hugging Post and Recovery Goalie () starts by one post, hugging it. On leaders signal, goalie does T-push to opposite side of the crease, facing the imaginary shooter and returns (recovers) to a basic stance; another T-push across the top of the crease, returning to a basic stance facing the second imaginary shooter, last T- push towards far post, finishing by hugging the post. Repeat in opposite direction. Hugging the Post: (stick side) skate on the inside of the post, body tight against the post, facing front of net, stick blade held erect and perpendicular to ring. T-Push: weight starts the pushing foot, the foot that forms the top of the T with the opposite foot pointing in the direction of the push to form the stem of the T, body is square to the ring (imaginary shooter); back foot pushes, opposite foot glides, after push, back foot recovers behind gliding foot, low to ice. Recovery: basic stance, square to ring, and ready to take shot. Start End T-push(s) Property of the Nepean Ringette Association 30
5 Goalie Drill # 3: Cushion Shot and Ring Distribution (hand and stick) Coach makes hard pass to goalie. Goalie cushions the shot so that it touches the crease, permitting her to distribute it to one of the pylons. Goalie will take 8 shots / passes from the coach, and each shot should be distributed to a different pylon: 4 by passing by hand, and 4 by using the stick. Cushion the Shot: basic stance, bottom of the stick flat on ice, 4 to 6 inches in front of skates; as the shot is taken on the stick, move stick back toward the skates (i.e. cushion ). Pylon Targets Shot from Coach Ring Distribution: held in the glove hand, ring is parallel to the ice ( like holding a frisbee ): bring ring across the chest and the arm swings forwards and towards the target; goalie transfers weight from back foot and steps into the throw; keeps eye on the target and throws ring with appropriate power. 6 Goalie Drill # 4: Butterfly and Skate Saves Part 1: On signal from coach, goalie drops into butterfly position and returns to stand up basic stance. Repeat 3 times. Part 2: From butterfly position, coach sends 3 shots to the right leg pad and the goalie strives to use the pad to deflect the ring to the corner. Repeat with left leg pad. Then return to basic stance. Butterfly: From the basic stance, knees come together and the feet slide out to the sides while dropping to the knees; pads lie flush with the ice, angled towards the corners with the stick out front, but flat on the ice; upper body remains upright, glove hand out to the side. One Knee Skate Save: starting with basic stance, leaning in the direction of the save, extending the lead leg with the skate edge on the ice, but keeping stick flat on ice in front, the angle of the pads directs ring to corners. 7 Goalie Drill # 5: Angles / ing Place pylon just behind goal line; place one pylons in one of the three positions as shown, or in other spots where possible shooters may take shots; goalie must move into the crease and without looking behind her, must position herself directly between the 2 plyons (shooter and middle of net); then, place a second pylon and repeat, repeat for a third pylon. For each goalie place the pylon in different places so cheating is discouraged. Challenge goalies to consider their choice of ice location / position. Goalie is able to quickly move to the right location (directly in the middle of the two pylons) and be square to the shooter without looking behind her. 8 Goalie Drill # 6: Breakaways Deke Only Recruit 2 or 3 free skaters from another station who is waiting her turn. Place ring at blue line. Ring carrier carries the ring to net, without any defenders and tries to score on the goalie. NO one time shot. Must be a fake and then a shot. Strive to make the goalie move. Challenge goalies to consider their choice of ice location / position. Goalie is not stationary; as ring carrier moves to net, goalie moving backward slightly; speed of retreat depends of speed of ring carrier; on a deke, goalie must not move out toward the shooter; goalie may expose one side of the net to lure shooter to that side, then close it by moving then direction; goalie stays tall as shooter may raise ring; but reacts and may do butterfly if moving to one side for low shots.
