1 DIVISION I 7 9 Ice Hockey DIVISION I Championship H i g h l i g h t s North Dakota goalie Karl Goehring made 5 saves in the Frozen Four, earning him all-tournament team honors. Sioux At Home In Providence: North Dakota has found a home in Providence, winning its seventh national championship and third in the Rhode Island capital by defeating Boston College, - on April 8. With both teams trading chances in the first two periods, goaltending was a key issue. Boston College s Scott Clemmenson and North Dakota s Karl Goehring made several key saves. The Eagles managed two goals and the Sioux one after two periods. North Dakota s Lee Goren nicknamed Scorin Goren posted two third-period goals to help the Sioux to the title. The game-winner scored by North Dakota s Jason Ulmer, came with 5: left in the game. With the championship, North Dakota trails Michigan for the overall lead. The Wolverines have claimed nine national championships. All-tournament team honors went to Sioux netminder Goehring, defensemen Mike Mottau (Boston College) and Mike Commodore (North Dakota) and forwards Bryan Lundbohm (North Dakota) and Jeff Farkas (Boston College). Goren was named the tournament s most outstanding player. Cadets win first title: Norwich, rated as Division III s top team for much of the year, used Marc Bellemare's goal midway in the third period to defeat St. Thomas (Minnesota) - in the NCAA Division III championship game. The tournament s finals were held March 7-8 at Wisconsin- Superior s Wessman Arena. With the game tied -, Bellemare fired a -footer that hit St. Thomas goalie Brad Moore and rolled into the net. The Tommies pulled Moore in the final minute but didn t get a good chance at freshman Cadet goalie Randy Hevey. It was the first NCAA title of any sort for Norwich. In the third-place game, Plattsburgh State defeated the host institution, Wisconsin-Superior, -. Norwich defeated Wisconsin-Superior 5- in a wild overtime thriller, while St. Thomas blasted Plattsburgh State 7- to reach the finals. The Cadets (9--), who ended the season on a -game unbeaten streak, snapped a string of five-straight titles for Middlebury. Middlebury lost in the quarterfinals to Plattsburgh.
