The Cup is named after Julie and Spencer Penrose, who were tremendously successful in the business world and did much of it in Colorado Springs in the early 1900s. The couple made much of their money in the copper industry, which is why the trophy includes copper stars on it. The Penroses also set up the El Pomar Foundation, which still today helps pay for amateur sports and other non-profits, including the NCHC office located in the Copper Building next to the Penrose House on the grounds of the Penrose compound in Colorado Springs. The El Pomar Foundation has also issued grants for the Penrose Cup, medallions for each individual champion and the NCHC s annual Post-Graduate Scholarship. Denver won its first Penrose Cup last season, while North Dakota won back-to-back Penrose Cups in 2015 and 2016 after St. Cloud State won the inaugural season. NCHC Tournament/Frozen Faceoff The NCHC Tournament will consist of four quarterfinal series on the first weekend following regular-season play (March 9-11, 2018). The four higher seeds will host the four lower seeds in a best two-out-of-three format. Seed #1 will host Seed #8, Seed #2 will host Seed #7, Seed #3 will host Seed #6, and Seed #4 will host Seed #5. The winners of the four quarterfinal series will advance to the NCHC Frozen Faceoff at Xcel Energy Center in Saint Paul, Minn. for the two semifinal games on Friday, March 16. Semifinal games will be reseeded based on the final regularseason standings. The winners of the two semifinal games (4:08/7:38 p.m. CT) will then meet in the Championship Game (7:38 p.m. CT) on Saturday, March 17 for an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament, while the two losers from the semifinal games will face each other in the third-place game (3:38 p.m. CT) earlier in the day Final NCHC Standings Conference Overall Pts. 18 Previous Week Round-Up THURSDAY, OCT. 26 Getting the National Collegiate Hockey Conference (NCHC) weekend slate started a day earlier than normal, Omaha opened the weekend well for the NCHC in non-conference play, downing No. 8/8 Notre Dame, 6-4, Thursday night. The Mavericks were the only NCHC team in action Thursday. Building up a 5-1 lead and holding on late, Omaha topped No. 8/8 Notre Dame, 6-4, Thursday night at the Compton Family Ice Arena in South Bend, Ind. The Mavericks (3-1-1) wasted little time jumping in front as senior forward David Pope scored unassisted only 15 seconds into the game. Pope then set up classmate Jake Randolph a few minutes later to double the lead while junior forward Steven Spinner scored the first of his two goals early in the second stanza to make it 3-0 before the Fighting Irish (3-3-1) got on the board. The teams then combined for four goals in the final four minutes of the second period with Omaha scoring the first two to make it 5-1, before Notre Dame roared back to close the gap to 5-3 after 40 minutes. A power play goal brought UND within one early in the third, but Spinner sealed the victory with his second tally of the night in an empty net. Pope finished with two goals and an assist in the win, while Randolph also had three points with a marker and two helpers. Omaha held a slight edge in shots, 36-35, while junior Evan Weninger made 31 saves to earn the win in net. FRIDAY, OCT. 27 While four National Collegiate Hockey Conference (NCHC) teams faced non-conference tests Friday night, two NCHC teams opened conference play as the pursuit of the Penrose Cup officially got underway for Colorado College won the first NCHC game of the season, edging No. 4/4 North Dakota, 2-1, in Colorado Springs. In non-conference play, NCHC teams went with all three wins coming over Hockey East foes. Miami whitewashed UConn, 3-0, in Oxford, while No. 10/11 Minnesota Duluth clipped Maine, 2-1, out east. Also out east, No. 1/1 Denver earned a huge win over No. 6/6 Boston University, scoring in the final seconds for a 4-3 victory. The lone NCHC team to fall in non-conference action Friday was Omaha, which narrowly lost at No. 8/8 Notre Dame, 5-4, settling for a series split. In the first conference game of the season, Colorado College and No. 4/4 North Dakota played a tight game down to the wire, with the Tigers holding off UND for a 2-1 win Friday at the Broadmoor World Arena. CC junior forward Mason Bergh scored his NCHC-leading sixth goal of the season only 4:45 into the game on a back-hand, with an assist from sophomore forward Nick Halloran. Midway through the second period, the duo hooked up again with Bergh feeding Halloran for a power play goal to make it 2-0 Tigers (5-2-0, NCHC). The Fighting Hawks (4-2-1, NCHC) cut the deficit in half with 30 seconds to play in the second stanza when junior forward Shane Gersich ripped a shot past sophomore Alex Leclerc unassisted, but UND was unable to find the equalizer in the final frame, despite outshooting CC, 13-3, in the final 20 minutes. Leclerc totaled 26 saves to earn the win in net as North Dakota held a slight, edge in shots on goal. Terry scored with only 16 seconds remaining in regulation to keep No. 1/1 Denver unbeaten and lift the Pioneers to a 4-3 win at No. 6/6 Boston University Friday at Agganis Arena. Denver (3-0-2) jumped out to a 2-0 lead only 3:54 into the game, capped by a power play goal from junior forward Colin Staub, the first of his three points on the night. The Terriers (3-3-1) answered with a pair of goals in less than two minutes midway through the first to pull even, while Staub struck again on the power play late in the first frame to regain DU s lead. Dante Fabbro tied the game for BU midway through the final frame, but Terry used his late-game magic to give the Pioneers the win. He finished with the game-winner and an assist, while Staub had two goals and an assist. The Terriers outshot Denver, 29-26, but senior goalie Tanner Jaillet made 26 saves to earn the win in net. Behind a big first period and a shutout from sophomore Ryan Larkin, Miami picked up a 3-0 win over Connecticut Friday at Steve Cady Arena in the first ever meeting between the teams. The RedHawks (2-3-0) scored three times in the first 10 minutes of the game, while neither team found the back of the net during the remaining 50 minutes. Sophomore forward Carson Meyer opened the scoring, while senior defenseman Scott Dornbrock made it 2-0 and sophomore forward Gordie Green scored his third goal in as many games to cap the outburst. Dornbrock added an assist for a two-point night. Larkin totaled 19 saves for his second career shutout as Miami outshot UConn (2-4-1), Both teams were 0-for-4 on the power play. After a power outage delayed the start of the game, No. 10/11 Minnesota Duluth came out firing out of the gate and struck again late to earn a 2-1 win over Maine Friday at Alfond Arena. Sophomore forward Riley Tufte tallied his team-leading fourth goal of the season only 46 seconds into the game to put UMD (3-2-2) up early. The Black Bears (2-3-0) finally tied the game midway through the third period, but only 1:37 later, sophomore forward Jade Miller scored the game-winner off an assist from junior forward Billy Exell. The Bulldogs outshot Maine, 29-27, in the win, and killed all three Black Bear power plays. Sophomore goalie Hunter Shepard earned the win in net with 26 saves. Omaha grabbed a lead in the first period, but No. 8/8 Notre Dame used a four-goal second period to take the lead for good and top the Mavericks, 5-4, Friday at Compton Family Ice Arena as the teams split their two-game series. After the Fighting Irish (4-3-1) scored first, Omaha (3-2-1) answered with two goals in the latter half of the first frame, the second of which came from junior forward Ryan Galt, who tallied two goals on the night for his first career multi-goal game and doubled his career goal total of one entering the night. Notre Dame struck three times in the first five minutes of the middle period however, to grab a 4-2 lead. UNO senior forward David Pope, who also added an assist Friday, struck on the power play midway through the second stanza to make it a one-goal game, but the Irish tallied again late in the period and Omaha was unable to close the deficit in the third period. Notre Dame outshot the Mavericks, 35-31, in its victory.
