1 2016 AMERICAN MORGAN HORSE ASSOCIATION OPEN COMPETITION PROGRAM 2016 Guidelines. Please read carefully as changes have been made! The American Morgan Horse Association (AMHA) recognizes Morgans competing in events against all breeds with two special award programs the AMHA Year-End Award and the Morgan Medallion Award. Open Competition participants automatically are entered in both programs when they submit results. The AMHA Year-End Award presents a year-end award for outstanding performance by a Morgan horse in several sections within the program s eight major divisions. Year-end awards are tabulated on an annual basis during the competition year, which runs from November 2nd of the previous year to November 1st of the current year. The Morgan Medallion Award is a lifetime award presented to each Morgan meeting medallion requirements. Morgan horses may take as many years as needed to earn medallion points. Each participant receives an official bronze, silver, gold, or for some divisions, platinum medallion when they have accumulated the necessary points in their division. Medallions are presented in seven areas: Carriage Driving, Eventing, Competitive Trail, Dressage, Endurance, Show, and Working Western. Horses who earn five of the seven bronze medallions are presented with the AMHA Morgan Sport Horse Award, a trophy presented at the annual AMHA Convention. GENERAL GUIDELINES To be eligible for Open Competition: Horses must be registered with the AMHA and entered under the horse s AMHA registered name. Both the owner and all riders or drivers of the horse must be current AMHA members. The competition must be open to all breeds. Classes for Morgan horses only do not count. Open classes at Morgan shows are acceptable, e.g. the Carriage Driving division at Connecticut Morgan Open Horse Show. Results must be submitted on the appropriate entry forms which must be completed IN FULL with all required information. o We encourage you to submit entry forms electronically, but you may also mail or fax them to AMHA. To submit entry forms electronically, download the PDF from the AMHA website and completed the fields directly on the computer using Adobe Reader/Acrobat. You may then save the completed form and submit to the office by . All new Open Competition entries must pay a first time registration fee of $50 to enroll in the program, and then pay a $40 annual renewal fee each subsequent year, or program participants may pay a one-time fee of $200 for the lifetime of the horse. The registration fee must accompany the registration form sent for the horse. Competition results may be audited. If there is a significant difference between the number of points reported by the owner and the results reported by the show secretary, the entry will not be accepted and the horse will not be eligible for the program the following year. All decisions by AMHA are final. A horse can be entered in the program any time during the competition year prior to November 1st. Retroactive points from up to 10 years may be added to the current year s points, using the appropriate entry form for submitting results, for a fee of $100/year. Unless otherwise noted on the entry form, all results from competitions completed from November 2 through May 31 must be submitted by June 2 to permit web postings of interim results.
2 Final results must be submitted before November 1st each year. Results submitted from shows occurring after November 1st will be applied to the following year. Verification reports will be sent to owners of the horse with the high points and medallions after November 1 st. Owners must contact AMHA with corrections to the points by the deadline stated on the verification report or else all scores will be final and changes will no longer be made. YEAR-END AWARD The Year-End Award recognizes horses compiling the most points in each division during the year. Ribbons are awarded to the champion and reserve champion of each division, including junior exhibitors. Certificates are awarded for champions and reserve champions. The champions in each division are recognized at the annual AMHA Convention. Awards for those unable to attend are mailed after the convention. DETAILS OF DIVISIONS I. OPEN SHOWS AMHA Year-End Awards will be presented to Morgans who accumulate the most points in each of the nine show divisions: In-Hand, English Pleasure, Western Pleasure, Pleasure Driving, Hunter/Jumper, Equitation, Trail, Showmanship, and General. Classes that do not fit in a specific division will be included in the General division. If the class is open to both English and western, please indicate whether you rode English or western so points can be applied in the appropriate division. Shows may be rated or unrated (4-H and schooling shows are eligible), but shows and classes must be open to all breeds. Shows open only to or adjudicated by facility owners, family members, employees, boarders, or owners of horses in training at a single facility are not eligible for year-end or medallion points. Hunter classes under saddle will be counted in the Hunter/Jumper division only if the horse/rider combination also competes in at least one over fences class in the same division. Otherwise the points will be applied to the English pleasure division. Placings in equitation over fences classes are applied to the Equitation award. Points awarded for championship classes will count double. Shows using multiple judges will only count for one set of points. High point champions of a division will receive an extra 5 points, and reserve high point champions of a division will receive an extra 3 points (example: English or Western Pleasure High-Point). You must clearly indicate whether you win a championship class or if you are high point champion of a division to avoid confusion. Club or show year-end awards will not count toward the final AMHA Open Competition score. Results should be submitted on AMHA Entry Form A. II. COMPETITIVE TRAIL RIDES/DRIVES The Competitive Trail section includes any ride or drive sanctioned by the North American Trail Ride Conference (NATRC), the Eastern Competitive Trail Ride Association (ECTRA), the Upper Midwest Endurance and Competitive Ride Association (UMECRA), or other competitive trail rides/drives approved by the AMHA Disciplines Council. Four subdivisions are offered within the Competitive Trail Riding and Driving division: Limited Distance: consisting of rides miles in length Medium Distance: consisting of rides miles in length Extended Distance: consisting of rides miles in length Novice and Competitive Pleasure for competitors in NATRC Novice and Competitive pleasure divisions.
4 NATRC Novice and Competitive Pleasure competitors will be able to submit miles for only up to 6 rides or 240 miles, whichever is less, toward earning a medallion. For multi-day rides, one day of the medium distance ride must be at least 25 miles in length. Extended distance rides may be completed over a 2-3 day period. For 3-day rides, 2 days must each be a minimum of 25 miles long. If competitive trail rides or drives are less than 25 miles in length, they will be placed in the Open Show category. Competitive Trail should be submitted on AMHA Entry Form B. III. ENDURANCE TRAIL RIDES Limited Distance rides must be at least 25 miles but not exceed 35 miles in length. Competitors in these divisions may earn miles toward a medallion for only up to 6 rides or 210 miles, whichever is less. Please indicate on your entry forms whether the ride is sanctioned by AERC or unsanctioned. Endurance Ride entries should be submitted on AMHA Entry Form B. IV. DRESSAGE Results should be submitted on AMHA Entry Form E. Please indicate whether the event is sanctioned by USDF or unsanctioned. Please be sure the judge s name is readable. AMHA will confirm that each judge is USEF recognized. Scores earned toward the Beginner/Schooling Dressage year-end award category are not applicable toward a dressage medallion. V. EVENTING Results for eventing should be submitted on AMHA Entry Form C. Please indicate whether the event is recognized or unrecognized by USEA. VI. Working Western disciplines that are eligible for these categories include the following: reining, cutting, team penning, roping, reining/working cowhorse, ranch sorting, cowboy mounted shooting, competitive trail challenges and trail trials. For points to be included in the sanctioned event category both the class and the event must be governed by one of the following organizations: National Reining Horse Association (NRHA) National Reining Cow Horse Association (NRCHA) National Cutting Horse Association (NCHA) United States Team Penning Association (USTPA) Cowboy Mounted Shooting Association (CMSA) American Competitive Trail Horse Association (ACTHA) American Trail Trial Horsemen s Association (ATTA) California State Horsemen s Association (CSHA) Texas Trail Challenge Club (TTCC) Equine Trail Sports (ETS) Many national associations govern roping events; please be sure to indicate the sanctioning body on Entry Form F for all roping entries. Entries without a sanctioning body noted will be automatically entered into the unsanctioned category. Events or classes that are not sanctioned by any of the approved governing bodies are eligible for points in the unsanctioned division, which may include, but is not limited to open shows, playdays, jackpots, ladies, mens, green
5 horse, green rider, or others. If a sanctioned show has non-sanctioned classes, competitors may compete in both and submit points for each division. Results should be submitted on Entry Form F. VII. CARRIAGE Carriage is broken into two divisions: Carriage Pleasure and Combined Driving. For all Carriage Pleasure competitions, points for show champion and reserve champion will be awarded as for the Open Show division. Please dictate whether each event is sanctioned or unsanctioned. AMHA Year-End Carriage Awards will be presented in two categories: single and multiple. Multiples can include pairs, tandems, unicorns, and four-in-hands. For purposes of these awards, within a given combined driving competition (but not in carriage pleasure shows), a pair or tandem within the multiple category can comprise a pair and a spare and a four-in-hand can include one spare if so entered at the event. The multiple thus entered and declared will be treated as the entry for purposes of the AMHA Year-End program. If a multiple is separated, each horse will retain their points earned in the multiple. A separate entry fee must be paid for each member of the multiple. A. Carriage Pleasure Shows One year-end award is presented in each section (single, pair, multiple) and includes classes such as working pleasure, turnout, reinsmanship, obstacle driving, and timed marathon that are open to all breeds. Results should be submitted on Entry Form A. B. Combined Driving Events A second carriage year-end award is presented to Morgans at CDEs, where each phase (dressage, marathon, and timed obstacles) is considered a class, and the final placing is also counted as a class. Competitors receive points for each phase (dressage, cones, marathon) and points are accrued in the overall placing of the event. Results should be submitted on Entry Form D.
