The certification must be done if you are enrolled in one of the following projects: beef, dairy, cats, dogs, goats, horses, poultry, rabbits, sheep, and swine. Members who don t complete the certification before the show will be removed from the project and not be allowed to show. Anyone who has already taken the certification does not need to retake the test. The local office has a list of those already certified. T he website is located online at: web.extension.illinois.edu/qaec/. This rule applies to 4-H members who exhibit live animals AND poster exhibits. Meat Goats Does Owned by May 15, 2018 Final year for market heifer division at state fair junior show Illinois State Fair Junior Livestock officials have announced this is the final year for the market heifer division at the state fair junior beef show. Market heifers will show at the 2018 Illinois State Fair. Poultry YOU MUST FOLLOW your county 4-H Showbook requirements or call your local Extension office for advice. All birds must be hatched after January 1, 2018 except for Adult/Mature breeding trio which must be hatched before January 1, Rabbits Please refer to your county 4-H showbook as the age range of the Buck and Doe as well as Fryer Pens and Single Fryers. Last year s showbook is online at: Please choose the appropriate county 4-H page to find the age and weight requirements. 8

9 SCHOLARSHIPS $1,000 Illinois 4-H Livestock Scholarship is available to 1 or 2 members who have demonstrated mastery in the livestock area and plan to continue their education in the area of agriculture. Members must have been involved in the livestock project a minimum of three years. You must have been a 4-H member for at least 5 years and attending either a 4-year university, community college, or trade school. Applications are due March 1. Download the go.illinois.edu/4hscholarships. Eight $1,000 Legacy of Leadership Scholarships are offered to members who have demonstrated overall mastery and leadership in the 4-H program. FARM CREDIT ILLINOIS SCHOLARSHIPS High school seniors planning careers in agriculture may apply for a $2,000 scholarship. Farm Credit Illinois will provide 30 scholarships to youth who live or farm in one of the 60 counties in their service area. The first $1,000 will be distributed for the Fall 2018 semester, and the second $1,000 will be applied during the Fall 2020 semester. Apply online at farmcreditil.com before February 28. Are going to University of Illinois College of ACES? The college is MATCHING this scholarship, dollar for dollar! Double your money while getting a great ag education! 4-H CAMP Just a Few Spots Left Located at 4-H Memorial Camp, Monticello, IL *For Youth ages 8-16 *Cost $195 (4-H Member) $235 (Non-4-H Member) Camp Weeks Week 1: June 3-7 (Sunday thru Thursday) Week 2: June (Sunday thru Thursday) Week 3: June (Sunday thru Thursday) Week 4: July 1-July 4 (Sunday thru Wednesday, 4 day camp Participation Multi, State, National, International Level Participate in at least one 4-H activity or event outside my county Give to 4-H while you shop! During February, shoppers can donate either $1 or $4 to 4-H at all JOANN stores. The donations will funnel back to the national and local 4-H programs. The Paper Clovers have a craft instruction on the back for customers to take home and try. Anyone donating a $4 Paper Clover will receive a $4 off coupon to use at JOANN on a return visit. 4-H will be in most Illinois JOANN stores from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 3 to make greeting cards and kick off the celebration! ACES Family Academies July Are you a graduate of University of Illinois College of Agriculture, Consumer and Environmental Sciences? Share your excitement for U of I with a child you know. Participants will enjoy the college experience living in a residence hall, eating in the dining facilities and participating in educational classes on the College of ACES campus. ACES Family Academies is geared for children ages 8-13 years. Register after March 9

10 March 9 10, 2018 Campus of University of Illinois This year's Explore ACES will be more hands-on and interactive than ever before. ALL AGES are welcome to join us for a variety of activities on Friday, March 9th. On Saturday, March 10th, we invite admitted students and any high school juniors to spend the day getting to learn about their major or major of interest. Learn more exploreaces.org. OR Project Learning Multi, State Went on a 4-H fieldtrip or tour related to my 4-H project area beyond my county related to my project 4-H Shooting Sports Spring Adult Certification Training The spring training for those adults interested in joining the Illinois 4-H Shooting Sports program as a volunteer leader will be held May Adult volunteers are an important part of the Illinois 4-H Shooting Sports program. All 4-H shooting sports clubs must be led by adults who have completed the training and passed the certification test. Instructors are needed in all disciplines of pistol, shotgun, rifle, archery and wildlife, as well as coordinator positions. Cost is $125. Registration is handled through the local office and must be completed by mid April. Farm Credit Community Improvement Grant Due February 28th Farm Credit Illinois is ready to help Illinois 4-H clubs and FFA chapters bring positive and visible change to Illinois communities! Fifty $400 Community Improvement Grants are available. Clubs must be located in one of the 60 central and southern Illinois counties served by Farm Credit Illinois. Check if your club is eligible and apply today at farmcreditil.com. The deadline is Feb State 4-H Robotics Contest April 21 at the Orr Building IL State Fairgrounds Environmental health is one of the most important issues facing planet Earth. Our health is directly tied to the health of our planet. So, this year s State 4-H Robotics Competition is all about environmental health! Get all the go.illinois.edu/4hrobotics. Your Envirobot will illuminate the many environmental challenges we face as we try to heal our planet. NEW this year (replacing the teamwork challenge): Each team will identify one environmental health issue and propose a potential solution or product to help mitigate the negative effect of the issue. Come to Springfield and enjoy the day watching the competition and exploring lots of new technologies on display! 11 Regional Horse Bowl and Hippology Contest Saturday, April 7, 2018 Casey Church of the Nazarene, Casey, Illinois 4-H members with a passion for the horse industry may compete to win a spot on the state Horse Bowl and Hippology teams. Winners of the regional contests advance to the state competitions which will be held April 21 & 22 on the U of I campus. Registration begins soon for Hippology and Horse Bowl Contests. You do not need to own a horse to participate in these educational and fun events. State 4-H Horse Speaking Contest April 21 during the state 4-H Equine Contest. Sunday, June 24 Thursday June 28 Open to All Youth who have completed 8th Grade & at Least 14 yrs. of Age New Academies this year, including Companion animal nutrition and pet food manufacturing Exploring life beneath our feet: Plant biology Game Design: Digital art, storytelling and fabrication at the Fab Lab Advanced Microbiology Work Hard/Play Hard: Careers in health sciences, sports and wellness. They join all our favorites, such as aerospace, animal science, electrical and computer engineering, human development and family studies, honeybees and beekeeping, molecular and cellular biology, agricultural communications, and veterinary medicine. Go to go.illinois.edu/4hservice after your event and submit a report on what you did. We d love to see your photos, too. The goal of National 4-H Day of Service is to encourage 4-H members in every county to make a positive difference. Service projects can be done by individuals or as an entire county 4-H program. No matter what the project, this will be a day to make a difference. 12 4-H FAST FACTS February2018 Quilt Contest ~ Where in Zootopia is a 4-Leaf Clover The Decatur Quilters Guild is sponsoring a youth quilt contest, and Illinois 4-H members are encouraged to participate. Amazing prizes are available to youth in four age divisions. Learn more at Icanquiltnsew.com. The theme of the contest is Where in Zootopia is a 4-leaf clover. Quilts can be no larger than 50 x50 and no smaller than 24 x24. Registration opens April 15 and closes May 15. Each contestant must submit a 200-word initial report by May 31. This Progress Report Essay must be written by the contestant and explain their quilt construction plans and include a picture of them working on their quilt with their adult mentor, parent, or leader. Contestants will submit a 200 word Final Report Essay and photo of them holding their finished quilt no later than June 15, 2018 by to: ICanQuiltnSew-IL@sewverysmooth.com.
