Cattle Business Weekly HEALTH: At branding time, calves receive Inforce 3 Intranansal, Vision 7, Once PmH and injectable Dectomax. At weaning these bulls received Vista once, SQ and Vision 7 with Spur and were poured. They were boostered a month later. We also vaccinate with Multimin supplement for additional copper. These bulls have been poured with Ivomec several times. Health certificates will be provided, if necessary. TERMS: Cattle will sell under the suggested Terms and Conditions of the American Angus Association ( suggested_sale_terms. pdf). All cattle will be at the purchaser s risk as soon as sold. REGISTRATION: All of these bulls have been genomic tested or parentage tested through the American Angus Association. If you would like your purchases transferred in your name, let us know. We would be happy to do this for you. The American Angus Association is developing programs to help you market progeny from registered bulls. In order to qualify for programs, your herd bulls need to be transferred into your name. If you have questions about these programs or transferring papers, please ask, we will be glad to help. Remember two important changes, we are at the ranch like we were this past February and a new fall sale date. We hope this new date is a little more user friendly for everyone. The Rotenberger family has added a couple of things that should make this new date work better for those participating in the sale. The first is the wintering of the bulls until April first free of charge. Secondly the delayed purchase agreement that allows you to pay for your bulls after the first of the year. The bull business carries a certain amount of pressure. You must be a great judge of cattle, understand the nuances of breeding purebred cattle. Understand how to match the genetics you ve chosen to the environment in which you live. You must be a master communicator, or at least be able to communicate your vision to those who are interested in your program. I think it s the vision part that sets a breeder apart. It s the ones that are always a step ahead, who have already decided what a female is capable of before she even hits the ground. They see the future so clearly. I think you re at one of those places. They have a passion for the purebred cattle business here. They enjoy selling bulls! They enjoy learning about those they sell bulls too, their families and their operations. How you the commercial cattleman markets his or her cattle. There is great respect and appreciation given to the Spruce Hill Ranch customer. Once again this is an exciting set of bulls to help market. Big stout, the rancher kind. 5 Spruce Hill Ranch est By Dr William Rotenberger In 1971, my family moved to Bowman, ND after I served 2 years in the Army Veterinary Corps. I purchased the Tree Farm from John and Ester Brown. John & Ester were originally from the South Cave Hills of Harding County SD. A cement step on the premise had the inscription Spruce Hill etched in it. This is how the Spruce Hill Ranch originated.at this time I had several registered Angus cows in a partnership with my brother. The first bull Charlie & I purchased was Marshall Pride 274 Tex from the Erdmann Ranch, Watertown SD. During the years the cattle operation grew and I had yearling bull sales. The most notable was a bull I raised and called Candyman. He was a Candolier Forever 376 son who is the sire to the dam of our good donor cow Spruce Hill CandyRita I sold him to Wayne & Keith Stevenson, Gartner-Denowh and John Hamilton from Cedar Hills Ranch. At the time, I was also involved in Fabulous Females ran by Ben Lawson. In 1978, I had the opportunity to purchase the Roger Gabbert/Henry Biel herd. It was a large herd so Wayne Brooks (now Brooks Chalky Butte Ranch) and I split the herd. We split it in two groups and then drew cards to determine the pick. I drew a 7 and Wayne drew a Jack. In 1984, I was fortunate to purchase the current ranch location in the North Cave Hills of Harding County, SD. It was owned by Neal & Alice Ketchum. Ironically, the ranch is in the same area as the original ranch owned by John & Ester Brown, who we purchased the Tree Farm in Bowman from. In 1988, I was offered the position as the ND Deputy State Veterinarian. I kept the ranch but dispersed the cow herd. Several cows were purchased by the Krebs Ranch of Nebraska. One cow became a donor and subsequently sold to Circle A Farms of Missouri. During the time in Bismarck, I maintained a small group of cows. Chad was active in exhibiting and judging livestock. One of his show highlights was participating in the National Junior Angus shows. Chad was then chosen to be on the National Junior Angus board and served as chairman of the board. In 1995, upon completion of his degree in Animal Science from NDSU, Chad returned and took over the ranch operation. It was at this time we began to sell two year old bulls. We purchased several females to add to our herd. Most notably were the females we purchased from Elwood Anderson in his dispersion. One of those cows became a major donor. Fortune 6156 Lady 916 EA lived to be 19 years old and had a calf on her right up through her last summer. In 1998, the ranch acquired a full time manager. Chad married Michelle Olson from Malta, MT. The team continued to grow with the addition of Madison (2001), Molly (2003) and Riggs (2005). Over the past 20 years, we held the sale in St Onge SD, Bowman ND & now at the ranch in Ludlow SD. Since those first years many things have changed in our program, with our genetics and around the ranch. We not only grew as a family but also within our business. We hear all the time I don t want to buy a fat bull. There is a difference between a fat bull and a bull in proper condition for turn out. In college I worked for a man that told me results are accomplished by opportunity and potential. You have to have the genetic potential and provide the feed opportunity to get the growth results you want. With that being said, at weaning our bulls are put on a ration to gain 2.5 lbs per day until their yearling weigh date. The ration is designed to allow the bulls as a contemporary group to express their genetic potential for gain. We understand that this is an average, some gain more and some gain less, which helps isolate the bulls that excel. This is the basis for the American Angus Association s ratio system which translates into EPD s. So how does this affect individual condition? With this ration, we can see which bulls have continued to grow in their skeleton or mature & begin to increase their body condition. Which one is best? This is a decision you will have to make for your individual operation. In my opinion, there is a happy medium. Bulls that are heavy on weigh days and are still big enough without being fat are ideal. They are more likely to sire females that can maintain their condition under environmental demands and still sire steer calves that will excel in the feedlot without getting too fat too soon. Photo by Craig Maley Molly (right) and Madison Rotenberger will both jump off Handy at the National High School Finals Rodeo in Rock Springs, Wyoming in July. Molly Rotenberger says her last 15 years have been all about being better than her sister. 17-year-old Madison Rotenberger s competitive spirit makes her a worthy rival, but Molly is up to the task. The pair from Ludlow, South Dakota, took first and second in goat tying at the North Dakota High School Finals Rodeo, earning them each a spot at the national competition in Rock Springs, Wyoming, July 15-21, Anyone with a sibling knows that it is not always easy to work together. For the Rotenberger sisters, they say working together is what makes them better. It s friendly competition, and I always have a partner to train with, said Madison. We do everything together, said Molly, it s great because everything we do gets done twice as fast. Rodeo runs deep in the Rotenberger family. The girls say they started riding horses before they could even crawl, and their parents have always been involved in the sport. From day one, Molly says her sister Madison is what has kept her reaching for the stars. I always wanted to be as good as my sister, said Molly, If not better. She set the bar high for me. Molly said her goal for her first year of high school rodeo was to beat her sister, even if it was only by a point. The older Rotenberger sister won the North Dakota High School Finals Rodeo by a stretch of 10 points, but Molly says their practicing together is what prepared her to take second place. The two sisters rodeo together, show goats together, work cattle together and even share a horse for goat tying. The elder sister trained their mare, Handy. Not only can they jump off Handy to tie goats, but they also breakaway rope, team rope, pole bend and do ranch work on her at times. The horse has earned her spot on the Rotenberger Ranch. That horse will be here until the day she dies, said Molly. Madison said the training process for Handy was an easy one. That horse is just so smart, said Madison. Training started when Madison attended a goat tying clinic put on by their neighbor Kayla Nelson. Handy was picked up for the day to test out as a breakaway horse. Madison took a few trips down the fence while swinging her leg over, and then a few more with full dismounts. It wasn t long into the day when it was discovered Handy would be quite the goat tying partner. It took her maybe two hours to figure out, said Madison, Most horses can t figure it out that quickly. The youngest Roteneberger child, Riggs, also uses Handy as his breakaway and team roping horse. She serves as a backup to Madison and Molly if anything were to happen to their other horses. Because of rodeo, you need multi-event horses, said Madison She is a horse who can do many different things. Handy can take the girls to first and second place in goat tying and still run 21-second poles. Madison says there are a few younger horses on the ranch now being trained by the girls. The goal is for those horses is to make it to the A-Team : the Rotenberger sister rodeo string. Madison and Molly both hope to continue their rodeo careers into college. Madison is hoping to get here on a scholarship, and Molly has a few years to consider her options. One thing Molly has considered: Handy going away to school with Madison next year. I don t know if there will ever be another horse like her, said Molly. Molly is on the lookout for a horse of her own now, with a hope to make it to National Finals in the upcoming years. She would then like to compete in college, just like her mom. My mom was wicked awesome, and that is what I hope to be, said Molly. Going to national level rodeos is nothing new for Madison, this will be her fourth trip to one. She attended twice in junior high, and qualified last year for the National High School Rodeo. She says the lights, sounds and pictures won t be throwing her off her game this year. Molly on the other hand, will be attending for the first time as a high school competitor. She says she hated goat tying until her 8th grade year when she was the North Dakota State Junior High Champion. Now, she has big goals for the National Finals. I am pretty nervous said Molly, I want to have fun and make it to the short go at least. Both sisters say each trip is a family affair, with their real family and they rodeo family they have been competing with for years.
