Through the Personal Development curriculum, Picture Perfect YOUth is a pathway club members can follow to help them discover things about themselves, stretch their boundaries to try new things and be provided with support and encouragement that will help them be successful. Cheryl Newberry, Southwest District 4-H program specialist, said there are several objectives of this project, and the curriculum has three basic components the Personal Development curriculum, the Heritage Scrapbook Project and the Scrapbooking Project. Each component has three levels, including beginner for ages 9-11, intermediate for ages and advanced for ages 15-19, as well as a leader guide. Everything we do in 4-H is built around helping our youth develop life skills, and this project is no different, Newberry said. Through Picture Perfect YOUth, participants will develop strong communication skills through the sharing of ideas, thoughts and feelings, and targets the development of a well-rounded individual. In addition, Picture Perfect YOUth is based on the Targeting Life Skills Model for 4 -H and utilizes the Experiential Learning Model to facilitate lessons. Using creative photography terms such as zoom in, framing your thought, let s focus and developing the picture or panoramic view, the lessons are divided into four sections which represent the four H s of the 4-H program, including Head, Heart, Hands and Health. Some of the life skills targeted through the lessons include critical thinking, goal setting, problem solving, empathy, personal safety, selfesteem, character, keeping records and more. Cathy Allen, 4-H curriculum coordinator at the State 4-H Office on the Oklahoma State University campus, said the curriculum is designed with manuals that instructors and youth will use. We re excited that fair projects have been re-vamped for each age level in the Personal Development curriculum, Allen said. Some of the fair projects include posters, displays and kits. Each age level will have seven classes to enter fair projects. The Heritage Scrapbook project helps club members learn more about their families and gain a greater appreciation for their family heritage. As you work through this project, take your time and explore the many facets of your family, she said. The Scrapbooking project is a method of preserving memories that uses photographs, journaling, memorabilia and embellishments to create a layout that can be added to an album. This is a wonderful way to preserve the past to share with future generations. This project also is a good starting point toward putting together state record books, Newberry said. Everything we do in 4-H has great potential to be used in another fashion in another activity. The skills learned by taking part in the Personal Development project and Picture Perfect YOUth can help lay a solid foundation for other project work. Cattle are released immediately after exhibition and must be removed from their stall after the conclusion of the heifer show. Animals selected for the premium sale are also released and must be in place by 5:00pm on Monday, March 6th. 3 Page 3 Speech/Illustrated Presentation/Power Point Contest March 27, 2017 The Alfalfa County 4-H Speech & Illustrated Presentation / Power Point contests will be held March 27, 2017 at 6:00 p.m. at the Alfalfa County Exhibit Building in Cherokee. We will be following the Power Point guidelines used at State 4-H Roundup. However all 4-H members in Alfalfa County are eligible to participate in the Power Point contest in the county. For the Power Point contest you may pick up the guidelines in the office or go to our web page at Power Point presentations have to be brought into the extension office before March 23, so we can make sure everything is compatible with our equipment. All entries need to be in the Extension Office by March 23rd. 4 Page 4 NW District 4-H Trail Clinic April 29, 2017 Alfalfa County Fairgrounds 10:00 am to 3:00 pm All Alfalfa county 4-H members are welcome to attend. This is a mounted clinic, look for more information on Page 6 of this newsletter. Citizenship Washington Focus (CWF) Citizenship Washington Focus is a 4-H leadership program for high school youth. For six weeks of the summer, delegations of year-olds from across the country attend this program at the National 4-H Youth Conference Center, located just outside Washington, D.C. The program is aimed at enriching young people's lives by broadening their appreciation and respect for themselves and others in the world. Participants attend workshops, committees, field trips and social events for hands-on opportunities to learn and grow. Participants learn and practice skills that will make them better citizens and more successful individuals Oklahoma will attend CWF June 15-25, The trip will also include visiting the St. Louis Arch, Gettysburg and Phil- adelphia. Youth ages 15 and older are eligible to attend.
