2 PAWS: Pet Appreciation Week Adult Leaders Meeting Our next meeting will be September 9th, 6:00 p.m. in the Extension Meeting Room. Topics to be discussed at the September meeting: New 4-H Year Update on Syrup Festival We need your input on these changes. Please make plans to attend!! County Council meeting will be September 2nd at 6 pm in the Extension Meeting Room. We will elect officers at this meeting. Please attend if you would like to be elected to a county council officer position. We will be revamping the county council this year and will only have meetings as necessary for planning purposes for events. This year we will look at the council dealing with syrup festival planning, back to 4-H bash planning and the planning of ONE Day 4-H activities. This council will plan activities for the whole 4-H program. No more just monthly meetings to attend, we will be ACTIVE this year! This will be YOUR council done YOUR way, if you want to do work this year then come out and join the team National 4-H Week October 6-12, 2013 We are partnering with Tractor Supply Company this year to provide services like pet grooming and treats for the pet appreciation day scheduled on August 17, This will be a day to bring your pet and celebrate your bond with them at Tractor Supply. The 4-H program is allowed to set up several booths to recruit 4-H members and to provide services to Tractor Supply Patrons. Pet day will run from 10 AM till 2 PM and we will need 4-Hers to assist with manning the booths. If you would like to volunteer just let us know at the extension office. Also Sierra Reynolds from Mt. Enterprise 4-H will be leading a grooming booth for the pet day patrons. Hi I'm Sierra Reynolds, member of Mt. Enterprise 4-H and I will have a table set up at Tractor Supply on August 17th from 10:00 to 2:00 for Pet Day. I will be doing nails, hair, with bows, and bandanas for your pet to have a fabulous spa day so they will look as great as you! You can pick the color bow or bandana and the color of the nail polish for your dog to look dazzling. Also, if anyone would like to help we would be glad to have you. This will count as community service. Just call the Extension Office (903) I will also have a donation jar available and the money collected that day will go to the Henderson Animal Shelter. If you are a 4-H er and participated in a 4-H event beyond the county level competition, then you will receive an award for each project area competition. Examples include: district fashion show, district Ag Product ID, district/state Livestock Judging, district/ state Photography, district/state Recordbook, etc., etc., etc. If you are a 4-H er who will be receiving an award at the banquet, then you need to attend the banquet. If you are a 4-H er, and will not be receiving an award at the banquet, then you need to attend the banquet to support your fellow 4-H ers. All 4-H Adult Leader s, Parents, Grandparents, siblings, and anyone you would like to invite may attend the Rusk County 4-H Awards Banquet. 4 Youth Advisory Board Rusk County is looking for smart young men and women to serve on its youth board. This board serves the entire county and assists the 4-H agent with educational planning for local school districts and the county programs offered through Texas A&M AgriLife Extension. If you know anyone who would make a great youth board member if you would please notify me by either phone or I would really appreciate it. 5 South Region Shooting Sports (NEW) Coaches Training 4-H shooting sports program requires all coaches to be trained in a 4-H Shooting Sports Training. Extended deadline to order tickets!! Training will be on October in Victoria, Texas Registration runs from August 16-September 16, 2013 Fees will be paid by the Rusk County 4-H Shooting Sports program from the Yeti cooler drawing. Coaches are needed for archery, pistol, shotgun, another rifle coach, and muzzle loader. Registration is on 4hconnect.com 4-H Shooting Sports Postal League Compete in a shooting sports competition without ever leaving your home. 27, 2013 Postal League Registration will open up on 4hconnect.com from October 1- Entry $10/ event Late Registration from October 28-November 3, 2013 East Texas Show Star Series Beef, Lamb & Goat Clinics & Prospect Show Mark your calendar! Entry $12/ event Postal League shooting dates run from November 4, 2013 thru April 14, 2014 with Scores due April 30, October 19-20, 2013 Nacogdoches County Expo Center Check future newsletters for a complete show flyer For more information: etsss.blogspot.com/ September 28th, 7:05 p.m. Texas Rangers vs. Los Angeles Angels Rusk County 4-H will, again this summer, be taking a group to a Texas Rangers Baseball Game. The date of the game is Saturday, September 28 th, 7:05 p.m. The Rangers will play the Los Angeles Angels. The full ticket price is $51, which includes admission to the game and all-you-can-eat and drink: popcorn, nachos, hot dogs, chicken sandwiches, soft drinks and a t-shirt or souvenir. However, 4-H has set aside some money to help offset some of the cost. So... the price you pay will be less than that. How much less depends on how many people go. This is open to all current 4-H ers, and family members, and your friends are welcome to attend at the full price of $51. Please make a $25 deposit per ticket by August 16 th. The remaining balance, whatever it is will be due later. Call the Extension Office and get signed up!

6 Major Show Swine, Goat and Lamb Tag Orders Due Anyone wanting to show swine, lamb or goats at any major show needs to order tags as instructed below. Tags are $8.00 each and must be prepaid before we order. These tags will be for the following shows: Ft. Worth Stock Show San Antonio Stock Show Star of Texas - Austin Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo East Texas State Fair September 20-29, H ers don t forget about the Annual East Texas State Fair. This exciting event will be held September in Tyler. Livestock entries are due to us by August 24th. Here is a partial list of the other categories to participate in: home grown fruits and vegetables, livestock shows, Plant ID contest, textiles, art, painted china, ceramics, photography and much more!! Check the website for details or call the Extension Office. Swine Tag Order!!!! Anyone wanting to show a swine project must stop by the office and pay $8.00 per tag by August 20th.!!!!Major Lamb & Goat Tag Order!!!! Anyone wanting to show a lamb or goat project must stop by the office and pay $8.00 per tag by August 20th. Breeding Sheep tags $3.00/head Validation Breeding sheep validation Program SALE, HLSR, San Angelo Majors will have breeding sheep programs. Ownership deadline is now October 1 st and must have numbers of breeding lambs by August 20 th. Breeding ewes and rams must be registered and a copy of registration papers is due on validation day. Junior Wether Dam Show: San Antonio Show intended for exhibition of ewes suited for club lamb production and not required to be registered. All breed types will show together within the three age classes; ewe lamb, 2 tooth ewe and aged ewe. Both commercial and registered ewes are eligible to show, however ewes may not be double entered in breeding sheep and wether dam show. Ewes entered in this show will be validated just like wethers so tag orders are due August 20 th. Livestock Entry Deadline All Livestock entries due to Extension Office by August 16th. 10 4-H AGE DIVISION ONE Day 4-H 5 Year Anniversary is this year!! On October 12, 2013 over 30,000 4-H members will make a difference. September 24th If you want to compete in 4-H contests - these are the age divisions. Junior -ages 9 through 10 Intermediate -ages 11 through 13 Seniors -ages 14 through 18 (Ages are based on August 31st of current 4-H year.) Bona-fide 4-H members must be 8 and in the 3rd grade or 9 to 18 years old to compete in any 4-H event. I would like volunteers to help promote 4-H at Taste of Rusk County. You will receive a ticket to eat at the event and it is a great community service opportunity. Please call the Extension Office for more information or to sign up.
