During this two-day camp, 4-H ers will learn what an entrepreneur is, be inspired to think outside the box, experience what it is like to think like an entrepreneur, tour a local business, start a 4-H project, hear first hand business experiences and more. Contact the Harlan County Extension Office to sign up for Camp at June 14th Camp Check-in 2:00 pm Sewing Camp Part Two, will be June at the Sewing Camp Part 2 Orleans Ag Center. Time for construction! After picking out your pattern and gathering all necessary supplies, it s finally time to sew. 4-Hers will receive guidance from experienced sewers and leave with fairready items. Call the office to sign-up to attend part 2 sewing camp. 4-H Babysitting Clinic June 29th & 30th Alma Courthouse 9:00 am - Noon At this two day clinic, you will learn about the responsibilities of babysitting, first aid and safety, creative play ideas and more!! This 4-H Babysitting Clinic is for youth in the 4th grade and older and will be held on Thursday and Friday, June 29 and 30 from 9:00 am till noon. The cost is $10 for both days PLEASE PRE- REGISTER by Friday, June 23 to Harlan County Extension at PO Box 258, Alma, NE or by calling Bicycle Rodeo - July 6:00pm This year s Bicycle Rodeo will be July 10 at the Ag Center in Orleans with registration beginning at 6:00 p.m. The rodeo will start at 6:15 p.m. beginning with the written test. 4 Favorite Food Revue - July 11 Plan to attend this fun evening held at the Ag Center in Orleans, on Tuesday, July 11 at 6:30 p.m. The 4-H Food Revue integrates food and nutrition knowledge into one activity; food preparation, menu planning, nutritional knowledge, table service, and food handling practices. Any 4-H member enrolled in a foods and nutrition project may participate. Exhibits should be related to a food and nutrition project the member is enrolled in. To enroll in the Favorite Food Revue, please call the office at by July 6th. The exhibit should include: * Recipe of the food and a menu for the meal featuring the food item. * A one place setting for the menu featured. Use dishes, silverware, etc. * A centerpiece appropriate for the planned occasion. * One serving of the prepared food on/in the appropriate dish; * Table covering as appropriate for the occasion (table cloths, place mats, etc.). Each 4-H er is responsible for bringing their own card table the day of the revue and setting up their own display. Presentations - July 11 4-H'ers, do you have something you do that you want to share with others? Do you like to teach others how to do things? If so, you should plan to enter the Presentation Contest. This is a great contest to develop or enhance your speaking and communication skills. The Presentations Contest will be held before the judging of the Favorite Food Revue at 6:30 p.m. We want to see you, July 11 at the Ag Center in Orleans. You will need to pre-register for this contest by July 6th. Please contact the office at or cammie.kroll@unl.edu for more information. Pre-registration is required by Thursday, July 6. Just For Fun Dog Show - July 27 Thursday evening, July 27 at 6:30 p.m. at the Show Arena in Orleans. This show is open to any 4-H er or Clover Kid who has a pet dog. The 4-H er and dog will be judged on the 4-H ers knowledge of their pet and the quality of the dog as a pet. This is not an obedience show. The show will be divided into a small breed dog class (under 20 pounds) and a large breed dog class (over 20 pounds). A 4-H er may enter only one dog, and a dog can only be shown by one 4-H er. The dog must be on a leash. 4-H ers will be interview judged and must wear a 4-H T-shirt. Pre-registration is required by Friday, July 25. ** Please remember, as a dog owner you are responsible for your dog s behavior, so please do not bring your dog to the Just for Fun Dog Show if you think it might not behave or you can t control it.

We want to see it! The Public Song/Talent Contest will be held the evening of July 24 at the Ag Center in Orleans, beginning at 8:00 p.m. Any Harlan County 4-H member may be a member of a song and/or talent group, but an individual can appear in only one song group. The members of the group need not be members of the same 4-H club. If you are planning to enter the Song/Talent Contest, please call the Extension office by July 17. Clothing Judging & Fashion Show July 24 July 24 is a big day for all 4-H ers. All Clothing and Style Revue entries are judged on July 24 at the Ag Center in Orleans starting at 9:00am. 6 2017 HARLAN COUNTY Jr. FAIR July 29 - August 3, 2017 Livestock Exhibitors The June deadlines for county and state fair livestock identification are coming up fast!! Remember that ALL livestock needs to be identified on the appropriate livestock affidavit and ear tags in the animal s ears. For county fair, the upcoming deadline is June 5 and for state fair/aksarben deadline is June 15. Ear tags need to be in the ears by the stated deadlines and will not be available at the county fair. More specifics are found on the attached livestock identification form. Please take note of the specifics and if you have any questions, please give us a call! Harlan County Fair Animal Exhibit Information Number of entries: Entries per project area that may be made by one individual: (2) two breeding beef, (3) three market beef, (2) two stocker-feeders, (2) two breeding sheep, (3) three market lambs, (3) three swine, (3) three dairy cows and/or (calves), (3) three meat goats, (2) two breeding meat goat does and two (2) dairy goats. In addition, a third dairy goat entry may be made in the Best Kid Class. Pigs weighing under 220 pounds or over 320 pounds will not be considered for any championships in the market swine show. Lambs must weigh a minimum of 100 pounds to be eligible to show in the lightweight division. Lambs weighing less than 100 pounds will show separately, no purple ribbons will be awarded in this class, and these lambs will not compete for champion. Dairy Goats are to be on the fairgrounds only on the day of the show. A 4-H er may make a total of two entries in the dairy goat show. In addition, a third entry may be made in the Best Dressed Kid Class. Please note that a beef animal can be shown in only one class, except where a calf has been shown in the cow/calf class, it also can be shown in the stocker/feeder class. Exhibitor must list each heifer s breed, identification number and birthdate (month, day & year) on the entry card, and turn the entry card into the livestock chairperson on entry day. 4-H ers may show only one bucket calf at the County Fair. All exhibitors who enter any animal, project will be entered into showmanship automatically. All showmanship entries are due when your livestock is checked in at the Harlan County Fair. Swine Exhibitor Reminder All exhibitors who plan on showing swine at the Harlan County Fair or the Nebraska State Fair must have a Premise ID number. Harlan County Fair Check-In All market livestock exhibitors are asked to please tell the check in crew on Sunday evening July 30 th which animals you do NOT plan to sell in the auction. This could be your third lamb or pig or market beef that you could sell for the base bid or put into your family s freezer (going to slaughter, but not in the sale), or an animal that you will be taking home. Market animals that normally would sell, but are withdrawn from the sale and go home, may receive a premium for their animals at the auction. This excludes an exhibitor s third market animal, as these animals are base price only (no premium). County Horse Show Registration Watch your mail for the County Horse Show pre-registration forms. The forms need to be completed and returned to us no later than July 11 th, If you do not receive your letter with your Horse Show registration please call the office or cammie.kroll@unl.edu. Livestock Entry Day for Market Animal Exhibitors All poultry, rabbits, and livestock, except for stocker/feeders and Dairy, check in time is Sunday, July 30 th from 4:00 p.m. -7:30 p.m. Market swine will be scanned and all market animals will be weighed.

7 Check out the 2017 Harlan County Fair book at Fun Fair book Additions G Best Dressed Goat Contest - Goat Exhibitors are encouraged to use their imagination to design a costume for the 4-H goat. The attire should emphasize the personality of the animal. Any animal shown in this class must be on the 4-H ID Sheet. This class will take place upon the completion of the Dairy show on Wednesday, August 2. Harlan County Food Challenge 403 (County Only) E Sweet and Savory Baked Product or Healthy Snack. Diversify your pallet, by creating a sweet treat for the judge combining two main ingredients, one that is sweet and the other ingredient that is savory (Example: Chocolate and Jalapeno) Must include recipe and indicate your sweet and savory ingredients. E Food Flop Exhibit Did you experience a food flop this year? Did one of your 4-H Food projects not turn out? We want to hear about it. Tell us your story, include image (if applicable) and remember to include what you learned and/or what you will do different next time. Submit as a story or as a poster display. E Nebraska Birthday Baked Product Create a baked product that tells a story about your life or your family s heritage in Nebraska. Include a short story telling why the food product is unique and special to your life in Nebraska or to your Nebraska heritage. State Fair Volunteers Needed Do you want to spend a few hours at the state fair as an important part of the 4-H programming going on during the fair? We need your help! Nebraska 4-H is looking for volunteers to help with exhibit entry day, judging, and serving as 4-H exhibit building hosts. Volunteers will also be needed to serve as the Lil Green Mascot, take photographs of events as well as assist with all 4-H contests and events throughout the fair. State Fair 4-H volunteers will receive a gate pass for the day(s) they volunteer. This book contains Large colored photographs, description of growth, over 400 detailed narratives of plants, and Identification methods to distinguish similar species.
