1 .Kings River Gazette. Volume 6 Issue 9 The official publication of the Kings River Regulators September Port Mmer Sbootout ~~ By: Cole Chance There's only one word to describe Ft. Miller '01 -Success! It was a big success. I have never received so many compliments about our shoot and our range as we received this year. All the members who have worked so hard to make the KRR what it is can be very proud of this year's match and of the club. In a lot of my monthly columns I talk about the KRR being the best. Well folks, you just keep proving it, year after year. For those of you have given so much ofyour time, your labor, and yourselves to make the KRR the best damn club around - I say a great big Thank You! How about that ore cart? Was that an E Ticket ride or what? Buckskin and his crew sure did a great job on that one. From all the KRR members, thanks cowboy- you're the best! Joaquin Rivers again this year ran our Cowboy Silhouette Match and did a superb job. He's got that thing well oiled and running like clockwork. Joaquin- good job cowboy! Posse leaders - you gentlemen did a fine job. I heard no complaints, only compliments on how well the posses ran. As Match Director, you made my Saturday go smooth as SnakeBite Whiskey (or maybe smoother!). Thanks cowboysgood job! This year I presented the Top Hand award to two outstanding cowboys, Michigan Bob and Fargo. Two harder workers have never been found. Some of you have no idea how many hours these two cowboys have put into the club. The award was well deserved by both. There are also five other very hard working cowboys who stand out as exceptionally dedicated and who I could always count on to pitch in when needed. To these cowboys (and they know who they are) I say thank you very much for all your hard work. This match could not have been the big success it was Officers Mayor: Cole Chance (Leon Chism) SASS #8243 KRR #26 Sheriff: Madera Dave (Dave Kroeger) SASS #5929 KRR #I 02 Blacksmith: Terrible Ted (Ted Polman) SASS #9014 KRR #36 Banker: Jessie Montana (Barbara Chism) SASS # 8244 KRR #27 Sec/Editor: Ruthless Ruth (Ruth Polman) SASS#9015 KRR#37 Territorial Governor: Snakebite (Doug Gilmore) SASS #4767L KRR #01 without you and your devotion to thekrr. There's someone else at the KRR who deserves a big thank you and who gets overlooked sometimes. Swanee Rivers is there every week, helping with registration, doing the scoring, and just generally doing anything she's asked to do or anything she sees needs doing. She worked especially hard during Ft. Miller '01. She worked registration, handled prizes, and she is one heck of a raffle ticket seller. Swanee- good job cowgirl! This year we had already decided to only sell raffle tickets at the shoot so that a shooter would most likely win. Then with the September 11 tragedy, we decided to donate all proceeds to the American Red Cross for the New York City relief efforts. I am proud to say that all the shooters really pitched in for this great cause and we raised $1,373! Thank you all for your generosity and caring. One last quick message to all those shooters that attended Ft. Miller '01. Thank you for your support, we promise to make next year even better. The work will never stop, the shoots will only get better, that's the cowboy way, and that's the KRR way. Thanks for coming and we hope to see you next year.
2 Fort Miller "2001" Helping the Red Cross By: Ruthless Ruth The Kings River Regulators have always had a raffle every year at Fort Miller and given away some nice guns, leather work, hats, gun carts, etc. Well this year was no different, we had a Sharps rifle, a 22 pistol and some real nice cowboy cook gear to raffle off. As you all know September 11 th changed our world as we knew it and devastated New York City. The Board ofdirectors decided to do something a little different this year. The raffle tickets were sold at the shoot only, so that a cowboy shooter would have frrst crack at the prizes and we decided to give all the proceeds to the Red Cross for disaster relief in New York. We've always known that cowboy shooters were generous and big hearted, but the results of the raffiejust blew us away. Thanks to some very generous people the Kings River Regulators was able to forward a check to the Red Cross in the amount of $1, Our hearts go out to those families in New York and surrounding areas who lost loved ones, and sincerely hope that the money raised will help them in some small way regroup and continue with their lives. Many thanks to all the cowboys and cowgirls who so generously supported this worthy cause. Junior Class Winners From left to right: J L Hank (2nd place), Cody Coyote (3rd place) and Badlands Bud (1st place). They are not only good shots, but mighty hard workers. A good example for their elders. Mabel & Edna Stage 4, Rosa's Cantina, scenario was written by and stage designed by Jessie Montana. Gets my vote for best set decoration. Sure were a lot of birds around there. Good job Cowgirl - For Sale Marlin Cowboy Rifle 45 LC $500 Call: Shiloh Quicksilver Slim, winner of the rifle and the camp cook set ratlled off at Fort Miller Thanks pard for supporting Fort Miller and the American Red Cross. Ken We had some new food vendors this year and from what I heard and ate they were really appreciated. Those breakfast burritos, roll and coffee really got the day started right. Those tri-tip sandwiches with their special sauce really hit the spot too. If you've spent anytime around the KRR you know Leadfoot and his family are excellent cooks. Edna is Leadfoot's mother and Mabel & Ken are his aunt and uncle. Good chow folks, thanks for coming out. Founders Award The founding members of the KRR pick a member to honor each year who they feel best represents the spirit and leadership abilities needed to move the KRR forward. This year they chose to honor our Mayor, Cole Chance. Cole has provided the driving force for the past year as our Mayor and has been instrumental in motivating our members to keep improving our range and our club. He also took the leadership role in this years Fort Miller, overseeing the scenarios, getting the food vendor and working with other clubs at FRPC to allow us to use their long range facilities. Thanks for a job well done.
3 H E A R D ROUND nte CORRAL '8\f: 'Rlftl11a 'Rwtk attb )ehfc Momatv. John Wayne Shoot tidbits Coarsegold Kid can't hit squat with a lantern. Mayor says Nine lives is his hero for actions above and beyond the call of duty. (you had to be there) Geo Kid and Lady Gunner seen dancing the night away, the way dancing should be done, smooth and with feeling. Terrible Ted pulled a hamstring trying to keep up with Geo's dancing, guess Geo won that stage... Snakebite scores perfect h1t nght smack dab in the middle of some small pistol targets, unfortunately there were holes in the middle of the targets and this one time perfect didn't count. Then there was Fort Miller Dog Face was heard to exclaim... don't paint that dam bell in the bear, can't hardly see it now. Square Shooter had a hard time shooting the one-on-one, came to the line with both guns ok, then discovered he'd forgotten his shot gun shell came back with that and found he'd,forgotten his ammo for the pistol. Terrible Ted said, ''you sure you want to shoot this thing? While pretty Patsy Montana was cooling herself in the shade in her shady lady undies, someone came up to her and ask if she realized she forgotten to put on her dress. Caught her a little off guard. Hope you weren't too embarrassed. That little senorita being held hostage in bay 4 really took a beating from the Hanford bunch, they shot her full ofholes. 1 hear the posse leader had a little trouble getting posse 4 to quit the oar cart for lunch, they was having too much fun. Swanee Rivers is one heck of a saleswomen. She sold the heck out of the raffle tickets, along with handing out shooters prizes and doing a heck of a lot of scoring. She's a real busy gal, considering she's a non-shooter. Thanks for the hard work. Sugar Pine Shay and Dick Smith (who isn't even a member yet) spent the whole day Saturday. working the loading and un loadmg benches, just to help out. Thanks guys, that's really the cowboy way. Bear Paw was the first shooter to go down range in the oar cart on bay 7. Seems fitting, he's a founding member of the KRR and a lot of the props and targets were built by him. Seems Fargo had a little trouble on the Quigley Shoot, fired 4 rounds at the bucket, hit two and then jammed a shell in his gun, some quick action by other cowboys got the shell out, he fired his fifth round and hit the target to win that pretty plaque. Is J L Hank getting good or what, beat pa-pa by a bunch this time. Hear Fiddletown Flash has some new high tech gadget for picking up brass, doesn't even have to bend over. Rot Gut Charlie was real disappointed on stage one, he thought if he didn't spill any of Snakebite's whiskey, he'd get to drink it. Don't worry Rot Gut, I hear it wasn't his best stuff anyway. Jessie said she didn't know there were grizzly bears in this part of the country, but apparently she and Cole camped next to a den according to the noise coming from next door. (I think Terrible Ted and I were next to the same den at the John Wayne Shoot.) On Bay 6, Hell Town, Percy Hallen drove Bearpaw's cart down to the end of the bay so Bearpaw could ride back. It was touch and go for a few minutes as to whether he was going to give it up. Percy looked real happy on it since that was his last stage and his doggies were hurtin a bit. A cowboy asked Fine Gold Floozy what she would charge for a picture of her and him in front of Floozy's. She told him that was the only freebie he'd get from herestablishment that day. Seems several cowboys jumped right up and volunteered to be the chair mover at Rosa's Cantina. Then they sat down and rested while the shooter completed the stage. Good thinking boys! A discussion was going on about one of the RV's having a dishwasher in it and Ruthless Ruth said her camper only had a port-a-potty in it. Madera Dave said ''Yeah, and Ted's wearing it on his head" referring to Terrible Ted's bowler hat. Mable (our food vendor) was keeping a close eye on the Sharps rifle. She insisted she was going to win and had Swanee Rivers wiping off fingerprints all weekend. No one cleaned the match, but Percy Hallen only missed 1. Dean Neufeld & Rattlesna~~ 1 Rip Oar Cart at Buckskin Mine A Big Hit Fort Miller ''2001" saw the first run of the Buckskin Mine oar cart. Buckskin was the ramrod on the project and got a lot of help from Geo Kid, Beanpot, Longbranch, and Marshall Harden Steele. Dean Neufeld ran the cart for us all day so everyone got the same ride, and what a ride. I heard nothing but nice things about that bay all day long. Great job Buckskin and crew!! We had 1 0 shooters clean the oar cart stage: Leadfoot, 49er Preacher, Cisco Pike, El Maestro, Percy Hallen, Lightning Larry, Diamond Dick, Rattlesnake Rip, River City Gun Runner, Dog Face...
