The 4-year-old gelding, trained and ridden by Cody Bauserman, picked up $23,120 for winning the MVP Futurity and Futurity Slot Race sidepot, held January 3-6 at the South Buckeye Equestrian Center in Arizona. He s a really neat horse, said Bauserman, who trains out of the Kennedy s Smoke Creek Quarter Horses in Bennett, Colorado. He s a big, stout horse too. He s like a man among boys. Bauserman and Papagaio, which means parrot in Portuguese, were fourth in the first round with a on a standard pattern. They were third on their second run with a My first run he wasn t quite as focused as I would have liked him to be, he said. He made a decent first run. He got to running really hard to the first and I had to check him down and he got really deep on my third. I was pleased with the. 3, but I knew he left some out there. The second run, he just made a smooth pass and ran the.2. The Futurity victory paid $8,120, while the Futurity Slot Race, which was determined by the fastest of the two go-round runs of the entered horses, was worth $15,000. Prior to the MVP Futurity, Papagaio had earned nice checks at the BFA World Championships in the Super Stakes and Juvenile before placing well at the inaugural running of the All-In Futurity in Las Vegas. Bred by the Kennedys, the 4-year-old gelding is by leading race and barrel horse sire Tres Seis out of the stakes-winning Dash Ta Fame mare Miss Lucky Lucky. An earner of $87,925 on the track, Miss Lucky Lucky is out of a daughter of leading barrel horse broodmare sire R Smith (TB). The gelding was started under saddle when Bauserman went to work for the Kennedys last year. He said that the gelding s barrel training was rather smooth sailing. He didn t even have a bump in the road, he said. The more pressure we added, the better he got. He s really mature for his age. The gelding hadn t been loping barrels long when he got in the trailer for his first big trip to the LG Invitational last February. We had a hole in the trailer, Bauserman said. I had told Adrian (Bohlin), Let s take the biggest, mature colts and start with them first. She rode him around the warmup pen at the Lazy E, so got exposed to a lot of that early on. Bauserman said once he made a couple super runs at the house last year, he knew he could back off the gelding s training. New Dickies Arena in Fort Worth set to open in November Fort Worth (Texas)-based Williamson-Dickie Manufacturing Co. won the naming rights for the multipurpose arena under construction at the Will Rogers Memorial Center that is expected to be one of the region s top tourist draws for a wide range of events. The new $540 million facility, in one of the city s signature areas, is now known as Dickies Arena. Philip Williamson, chairman and CEO, whose great-grandfather and grandfather helped found the company in 1922, said in the Fort Worth Star-Telegram it was a natural fit to gain the naming rights. Dickies Arena is expected to open in November In 2020, the arena, which has 14,000 seats, will become home to the Fort Worth Stock Show and Rodeo, the event that led city, business and civic leaders more than 25 years ago to start working on a more modern and larger facility. The 2019 Fort Worth Stock Show and Rodeo is scheduled for Jan. 25-Feb. 9 at the Will Rogers Coliseum. Houston announces Concert Lineup The Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo and Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association (PRCA) officials announced in October, a new, multi-year partnership that focuses on growing the sport of rodeo for the benefit of fans and the contestants, with earnings from the RODEOHOUSTON Super Series counting toward qualification for the 2019 Wrangler National Finals Rodeo, the season-ending championship event for the PRCA. The 2019 rodeo is scheduled for Feb March 17. The concert lineup for the rodeo, which will take place at NRG Stadium, is as follows: Feb. 25 Kacey Musgraves; Feb. 26 Prince Royce; Feb. 27 Brooks and Dunn; Feb. 28 Luke Bryan; March 1 Cardi B; March 2 Turnpike Troubadours; March 3 Panic! Bauserman, one of the all-time leading futurity riders, said Papagaio reminds of some the great horses that he s had in the past that were just super easy to train and ride. He s a really neat horse, he said. Ones like him don t come around very often. He s one that even if you don t make your run, he s still going to be close. 17 Molli Montgomery & Heavensfeelinspecial Nab Texas Extreme Futurity Victory for Dave & Lori Zabel By Tanya Randall Molli Montgomery guided Heavensfeelinspecial ( Dave ) to the winner s circle at the $20,000-added Texas Extreme Futurity, sponsored by Tres Seis, Makin Ya Famous and Zerlotti Genetics, held Jan 3-6 at the Brackenridge Events Center in Edna, Texas. The Dawson, Texas, trainer and the 4-year-old JL Dash Ta Heaven gelding earned $9,190 for his owners Dave and Lori Zabel. The first run I just sent him in there and put my hand down and held, recalled Montgomery. He just came around. He ran really hard to the second and really sat down, I grabbed a hold of him and he really came to it, because he s so athletic, just crazy athletic. Montgomery was shocked to hear their time of , which placed fifth in the round. He so athletic and he runs really smooth, so I had no idea what I was going to run, she said. None. No clue. When I heard that.2, I was like Whoa, that was really good. Dave had another surprising clock in the second go with a Even with a bobble at the first that forced Montgomery to lift her leg to clear the first barrel, they finished second in the round. He went flying in there, said Montgomery. He got by the first, and I thought, You just need to hold steady. He really came back and I knew I was going to have to lift my leg, and that s a really hard thing to do lift your leg and hold steady at the same time. We bowed off a little bit, but he just stayed good. He smoked the second; he just snaked around it. At the third, I grabbed him with both hands and just steadied him. A double-bred Special Feelins barrel horse from Jud Little s leading program, Dave is out of the NBHA Youth World Champion Wee Feelin Special, a daughter of Special Feelins. The Zabels purchased him as 2-year-old for $36,000 at 2017 Jud Little Ranch Production Sale. Dave had just a handful of rides at sale time. Unfortunately, that meant he was slightly behind Montgomery s other 2-year-olds that were already lightly loping the pattern. He s really sweet, but he is very opinionated, she laughed. He wants things to be his way. He s got some tendencies like a stallion, so I ve kind of have to work around that. Montgomery said her biggest challenge lately was finding the right headgear for the light-mouthed gelding. At Edna she used her favorite bit, a Kathy James gag. I think their whole futurity year, you re working the little kinks out what works for them bridle-wise, feed-wise, how much you can run, how much you should or shouldn t run them, she said. Montgomery, who also placed second in the first round on Jeff Makovy s Firewater Ta Fame, Streakin Six colt Stackin Bills, was tickled to have her horses work so well in Edna, especially after a disappointing I had a really rough year last year. Usually, I feel really confidant in what I have, but this group would do good and then they wouldn t. I wasn t sure what I had. 28 Bruner Sets Arena Record at Texas Circuit Finals By Amy Wilson Waco, Texas welcomed the Texas Circuit Finals Rodeo where the Top 12 WPRA barrel racers competed January 3-5 in three rounds. It was an impressive list including the 2019 World Champion Barrel Racer, Hailey Kinsel, and many NFR qualifiers. Kelly Bruner is one of them and appreciates the longtime home of Texas Circuit Finals, I love the ground man there at the Extraco Center, so you know the ground is going to be as good as it possibly can be. And you know you re going to have a really good committee because you see the same faces year after year and they re all very motivated to keep that rodeo top level and want it to click off fast and professional. They feel like they re presenting some of the best cowboys in the world a mini NFR. With the opportunity to earn an invitation to the Ram National Circuit Finals Rodeo on the line, some barrel racers were forced to change mounts due to issues the wet weather in Texas has caused. A lot of people were having trouble with abscesses there were several girls that didn t get to ride their main mount because of abscesses, Bruner informed. Her main mount, Suzy, cut his leg pretty bad a few days before the circuit finals, but Bruner wasn t planning to run him anyway. Bruner started on her 6 year old buckskin French Zone Hollywood, who she also ran a couple rounds at the NFR. I only got to run her three runs because she got sick. She s healthy again so I wanted to run her because I think she s going to have to carry some of the load this year so that s a good place to give it a go. It s challenging but she handled the performances really well, Bruner said after winning the first round by 2-tenths and tying the circuit finals arena record in the second round with a time of seconds. Bruner had changed her mentality since Vegas to trust Hollywood to perform like a veteran. At the national finals, I didn t know what I had and she d leave me behind at every barrel because I was trying to ride her more like a colt. But before the NFR, Hollywood had only been to one prorodeo at the end of the 2018 season where she ran in slack. Hollywood s ability to shut the clock off isn t going unnoticed. There were so many people that gave me such nice compliments. Taci Bettis said, that s what I want to do is raise one and take it through all the training and be the jockey there s just a great connection between you and her. I was thinking, it s just me hanging on, Bruner said humbly. It s also been rewarding for Bruner to see the benefits of giving Hollywood an extra year (futurity her as a five year old instead of a four year old), and starting with good breeding. I think spending as much as you can on good breeding pays off in the long run, Bruner said as she pointed out that Hollywood is by Frenchmans Guy. She is out of Star Zone, a thoroughbred mare who is also the dam of Fabulous Zone Pinky, the 10 year old gelding she decided to run for the third round of the circuit finals. He s been a real consistent, solid horse for me. After [Hollywood] did so good the first two runs, I figured I better stick with ole consistent, never-hits-a-barrel Pinky. I wanted to go with one I knew wasn t going to hit a barrel, Bruner said about her businesswoman decision that paid off. She won the average and $7,118. It really helped me feel like I was back in the game and kind of redeem myself a little bit, Bruner said in reference to the NFR not going as well as she hoped. And because of her own experiences, she was able to share some advice to some who were disappointed at the circuit finals. There were like three girls that were first time qualifiers, and I felt really bad for them. The first time I went, I had to borrow another person s horse my horse was crippled. He hit at least one barrel every trip. I was so discouraged. I told them that it s not going to be their last time just keep looking forward. Kinsel, who had about an $11,000 lead going in, had a heartbreaking start to her weekend when she lost her best friend and travel buddy of nearly 5 years, her dog Nina. I lost her a couple hours before the perf started on Friday while we were in Waco. I had exceptional help though, and I would like to thank my friend Paige Phillips and her family and Taci and Jeremy Bettis. If it wasn t for them, I couldn t have gotten through those two days. I ve never gone anywhere to a prorodeo without her really she s gone everywhere. It s going to be tough. Kinsel officially won the Texas Circuit year-end championship after the first round when it was mathematically impossible for anyone to catch her. Last year I came in twelfth and this year was leading it so that was different, but it was good to be back. It s a really good event, she said. Since Kinsel is giving Sister a well-deserved break after the NFR and the setup at Waco was more suitable for her 14 year old gelding, she was riding Thunder Stones TJ as she got to hear herself announced as the new World Champion. It was cool. The coolest part was that last year when I ran TJ, the announcer said, she must be on a young horse. This year he said, this is TJ and she rode him Texas Circuit Finals Rodeo Jan. 3-5, 2018, Waco, TX in the 10th round at the [NFR] to win the gold buckle. That was really neat that he s got some notoriety himself now, she said. Kinsel placed second in round 3 to finish the year with $32,848. She appreciated that the ground was good, fast, and safe. Having them rake every four is awesome. They kept it even you could win top or bottom of the ground. The committee did a good job and were super nice and helpful, she added. Both Kinsel and Bruner expressed how grateful they are for their Texas Circuit Director, Lois Ferguson. She always does a great job. All the gifts and beautiful buckle she gets for each one. We all got a Yeti cooler really nice stuff, Bruner said. And both Kinsel and Bruner get to do something they ve never done compete at a rodeo in Florida as they represent the Texas Circuit at the Ram National Circuit Finals Rodeo in Kissimmee this March.
