Dean Lee Research Station Livestock Testing Station 8105 East Campus Avenue Alexandria, LA Office: (318) Fax: (318) Livestock Testing Station 2011 Rules & Regulations The Louisiana Beef Cattle Testing Station, located at Dean Lee Research Station, Alexandria, LA, plans to conduct two Beef Bull Gain Evaluation Tests during the coming year. Breeders desiring information on prospective herd sires are invited to nominate young bulls for these tests in accordance with these Rules and Regulations. Breeders should consider EPD s, structural soundness, muscling, disposition, scrotal circumference and preweaning performance when selecting bulls for nomination. All animals should be above herd average in these categories. Purpose 1. To identify for the possible selection as future herd sires with the ability to gain weight rapidly. 2. To promote performance testing of beef cattle in Louisiana and to serve as an educational tool to acquaint producers with its value. 3. To provide data on characteristics of economic importance in beef cattle. Eligibility All bulls to be tested must: 1. Be registered (or eligible for registration) as a purebred by the appropriate breed association. Copies of registration papers or registration applications (including sire s and maternal grandsire s name and registration numbers) must accompany bull to the Station. Percentage bulls may be accepted if space permits. 1
2. Priority will be given to bulls nominated by Louisiana breeders. Bulls nominated by out of state breeders will be accepted if space is available. 3. Birth Dates. Bulls born between the dates of December 1and March 31 are eligible for the winter test and bulls born between September 1 and November 30 are eligible for the summer test. 4. Bulls must meet all health regulations (see Health and Veterinary Services section). An official state health certificate and LTS vaccination record must accompany bull to Station. 5. Bulls must weigh at least 2.2 pounds per day of age upon delivery to Station. 6. Bulls must be structurally sound. 7. Bulls must have a legible tattoo or brand. ALL ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS WILL BE STRICTLY ENFORCED. Health and Veterinary Services An official state health certificate indicating the following must accompany each bull delivered to the Station: 1. the animal has been tested negative for PI BVD prior to delivery, and must be accompanied by documentation of negative test at delivery. 2. the animal has been vaccinated for leptospirosis (Leptospira borgpetersenii seovar hardjo type hardjo-bovis lepto hardjo-bovis ) and for clostridial diseases using a multiple clostridium bacterin that includes clostridium chauvoei, clostridium septicum, clostridium sordelli and clostridium perfringens at least 15 days prior to arrival at the Station. 3. the animal has been vaccinated for Infectious Bovine Rhinotracheitis (IBR), Bovine Viral Diarrhea (BVD), Parainfluenza Type 3 (PI3), Bovine Respiratory Syncytial Virus (BRSV), Hemophilus somnus and Pasteurella haemolytica (leukotoxoid vaccine) at least 15 days prior to arrival at the Station. It is strongly recommended that the vaccine used contains Type II BVD. 4. the animal must be free of warts, ringworm, mange and pinkeye. 2
An LTS Vaccination Record indicating the following must accompany each bull delivered to the Station: 1. date and product used for pre-delivery initial vaccinations and booster vaccinations. Please be sure to give booster vaccinations if label on product used calls for boosters. 2. date and product used to deworm bulls and treat for lice and grubs. Bulls should be dewormed with an acceptable wormer and treated for lice control 2 to 4 weeks before delivery. If horned bulls are dehorned, healing must be complete before bulls are delivered. Necessary professional veterinary services will be charged directly to the owners of the animals concerned. ANY ANIMAL NOT MEETING THE ABOVE HEALTH REQUIREMENTS WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED. Additional Information It requested and strongly recommended that birth weight, actual weaning weight and adjusted weaning weight be provided on each bull. Both birth weight and adjusted weaning weight will be reported if available. All bulls should be weaned at least three weeks prior to arrival at the Station. This practice helps bulls go on feed faster and reduces stress to the animal. Any animal that becomes a threat to the health of the other animals on test or to Station personnel is to be removed by the owner upon notification. A breeder may not remove his animal from test except for veterinary reasons or upon the recommendation of the Performance Testing Committee. It shall be the prerogative and responsibility of the Performance Testing Committee to make all decisions concerning this program, which are not prescribed in these policies. 3
Test Procedure 1. Test will be 112 days. 2. Bulls will be fed free choice in groups. 3. The bulls will be placed on a starter ration upon arrival at the Station. Bulls will remain on this starter ration for the duration of the 14-day adjustment period. 4. Individual weights will be taken at the beginning and the end of the test and at 28-day intervals. Official on-test and off-test weights will be the average of weights on two consecutive days. 5. Bulls will be ranked within breed on 365-day weight. The 365-day weight will be computed using BIF formula (without weaning weight). Costs A nomination fee of $ per bull is required and must accompany the nomination form (this fee is not applied to feed cost). A feed down payment of $ per bull is required and must accompany each animal to the Station. Feed fees will be $1.50 per pound of gain while on test. The $ feed fee is applied to the total feed cost. The minimum feed fee is $ per bull. The total fees will average approximately $ All checks should be made payable to LSU AgCenter. All expenses must be paid prior to removal of any animal from the Station. Liability The Louisiana Agricultural Experiment Station will make every effort to safeguard the health of the animals on test through good management and the use of professional veterinary services (private practitioner) when necessary. The Station will not be responsible for loss by fire, theft, injury, sickness, death or in any other way. It is recommended that each producer procure his own insurance on valuable animals placed on test. 4
Weight Reports A report on the gains of all animals will be mailed via the U.S. Postal Service to each breeder that have bull(s) on test after each weigh day and at the end of the test. Weight reports, along with other additional information, will also be available for downloading from the Livestock Testing Station home page on the LSU AgCenter Dean Lee Research and Extension Center s Website. All documents will be in Adobe Acrobat format (.pdf) and will require Adobe Acrobat Reader to be viewed and printed.
